Before the release of "Pathaan" this year, the last project Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan (lovingly dubbed as Srk) starred in was 2018's "Zero," which performed poorly at the box office. Despite boasting phenomenal performances, "Zero" failed to captivate audiences due to its meandering plot that lost steam halfway through. Srk took a four-year hiatus after this (barring a surprise cameo in "Brahmāstra: Part One -- Shiva"), fueling added anticipation for his comeback film, "Pathaan," which grossed $6.8 million on its opening weekend alone when released in North American theaters. While the film's global box office earnings since its release speak for themselves, what makes audiences revisit "Pathaan" time and again is Srk's return to the big screen, and how electrifying it feels to see him perform in an action-intensive role.

Former Disney India head and leading producer Siddharth Roy Kapur has warned of some practices that could arise in making films for streamers.
Delivering the keynote address at the Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival’s Industry Connect Symposium on Monday, Kapur, who is currently basking in the success of International Emmy nominated series “Rocket Boys” for streamer SonyLIV, lauded the positives brought to the industry by the platforms but also pointed out the pitfalls.
Speaking about films made for theatrical release, Kapur said that while the recoupment for them in the government funded European industries might be a Cannes slot, in India it is monetary as well. “I have to say that at times, we shy away from it. And we say that it’s cinema, it’s art, why should one really have to look at that if you’re trying to make arthouse or independent movies? But I...

Around the turn of the century, modern reimaginings of Shakespeare had reached a fever pitch. Audiences were rediscovering the Bard's work through a string of stylish Hollywood films ranging from Baz Luhrmann's bombastic “Romeo + Juliet” to Michael Almereyda's gen-x-courting “Hamlet” to fun teen comedies like “10 Things I Hate About You.” It wasn't long before the trend reached the Indian film industry, which had previously produced only a small selection of Shakespeare adaptations. The charge was led by Vishal Bhardwaj, who received widespread acclaim for 2003's “Maqbool,” his violent take on “Macbeth” featuring Irrfan Khan in the lead role. Transposing the Scottish Play's power struggles to 21st-century Mumbai, Bhardwaj takes a haunting approach to the material, leaning into the bloodshed while playing with the supernatural moodiness and psychological torment of its protagonist. Bhardwaj would continue his Shakespeare trilogy with “Omkara” (“Othello”) in 2006 and “Haider” (“Hamlet”) in 2014, both...

Filmmaker Siddharth Anand is the toast of India. His “Pathaan” is currently the biggest Indian hit film of the year.
Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, the Yash Raj Films spy action thriller ended a box office drought for the Hindi-language Bollywood industry, which had a lean 2022, and marked a comeback for Khan, not seen as a leading man since 2018’s “Zero.”
“There was a lot of curiosity to see Shah Rukh Khan back after his hiatus – he took a break from media, from appearances, he just became inaccessible to the world, there suddenly was a thirst that he created for him – today, audiences are used to stars being out there in social media and events and everywhere,” Anand told Variety.
“He created that enigmatic quality, that mystery around him, which a star should have and then did a film that is in a very popular genre.

Pathaan
Directed by Siddharth Anand
There is no reason why any review of Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan (directed by Siddharth Anand but it’s an Srk showcase all the way) needs to be written. The two-and-a-half hour eruption of stylish action will be seen at least once by every movie patron in India, and then of course out West where Sharon Stone, I believe, has already bought bulk tickets for the entire weekend for her friends, family, fans and househelp .
Pathaan is a very slick action film. The stunts leave us open mouthed , like Sharon Stone when she saw Srk pass by.
We get to see Shah Rukh Khan more than just pass by in the title role. He is all there muscled and armed ready to take on the world to protect his country. There is a lot of stress in the rippling writing on how patriotic ‘Pathaan’ is.

ReviewDirector Nagendra Prasad’s ‘Lucky Man’ is a coming-of-age tale centred on the hero’s journey to reclaim his lost life. But in essence, it’s a measured combination of fantasy, comedy and urban romance.ShuklajiYouTubeLucky Man, at the outset, has all the workings of a perfect rom-com. Arjun Nagappa (Darling Krishna), the film’s protagonist, marries his best friend Anu (Sangeetha Sringeri) on a whim, but clearly has feelings for childhood crush Meera (Roshni Prakash). Arjun isn’t happy professionally either and in fact, hates being the ‘quality control’ guy for his father-in-law’s commode business. Stuck in this rut of a romance-less marriage and the squat of an Indian toilet, he now seeks an intervention and voila, God (Puneeth Rajkumar) himself enters in a Bruce Almighty-like fashion to offer him a way out. Lucky Man is an extra special film because it marks Puneeth’s final appearance onscreen...

Back in 2013, dialogue writer Abbas Tyrewala had registered a case against Preity Zinta after a cheque given by her had been dishonoured. However now we hear that on Monday a local court has acquitted Zinta in the case. As for the case that was filed in 2013, Tyrewala had been approached by Zinta to write eight lines of voiceover for the film Ishq In Paris that was being produced under the latter's banner Pz Media Llp. Since Tyrewala was to deliver the lines on an urgent basis, Zinta had apparently presented him with a cheque as remuneration to the tune of Rs. 21 lakhs, which could be encashed on completion of work. However, in his suite Tyrewala claimed that when he tried to encash it in November, the cheque which was given to him in September 2012, bounced, since the bank had been instructed to stop payment. The Indian jury to select India's official entry to the Oscars 2016, helmed by chairperson Amol Palekar, is all set to meet away from Bollywood and Mumbai in Hyderabad to decide on which of our films from 2015 goes to the Oscars . This is the second year in a row when Hyderabad has been chosen as the venue for the proceedings. According to sources Hyderabad is likely to remain the hub of Oscar activity on the coming years. "The jury to select the Indian entry to the Oscars is put under tremendous pressure in Mumbai to select a Bollywood film. This year too there is heavy lobbying in Mumbai for films like Vishal Bhardwaj's Haidar, Anurag Kashyap's Ugly, Raj Kumar Hirani's Pk and Omung Kumar's Mary Kom as Indian's Oscar entry. To avoid being 'Bollywoodized' the Oscar committee has moved from Mumbai to Hyderabad, far away from the madding crowd of lobbyists.

Bollywood churns out on average 120 plus films a year, with 2014 reaching 142. So to think all of them will go down in history as being successful is rather naive. But what about the ones we thought would work wonders but came up short? The ones that left us thinking, “Why was this allowed past the editing board”? Ahead of the conference, screenwriter Anjum Rajabali (Rajneeti, Pukar, The Legend of Bhagat Singh), the convener of the conference talks to DearCinema about some of the most pressing issues for writers:
How far have writers been successful in getting the Copyright Amendment Act implemented?

We have made our presentation to the Registrar at the meetings of stakeholders that were convened a few months ago. And we are ready with our flow-chart and plan of action, as soon as the Board calls us for that final meeting to confirm the protocols involved.

When I entered the cinema hall to sit down and watch Karan Johar’s latest directorial venture Student of the Year, I was completely taken aback by the fact that the room was almost full! This is especially since the film has three new and unheard of actor, Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt playing the leading roles. It led me to assume that it was most likely that everyone was here to witness what one of Bollywood’s most premier filmmakers has now constructed for us following the successful My Name is Khan (2010). It also reaffirmed for me that the audiences’ approach to Indian cinema had now transformed. They are now interested in the people behind the camera in addition to the people who are in front of it. Student of the Year does entertain you during its two and a half hour run, but there are certain...

One of this summer’s most awaiting blockbusters is getting a theme song in hindi for its release in India. Indian indie band Agnee have composed a song, with lyrics by Abbas Tyrewala for The Avengers / Avengers Assemble, which will be released by Utv in India. The song, titled ‘Hello Andheron’ (Hello Darkness), was launched at an event on Monday night in Mumbai, where Iron Man made an appearance (the suit, not Rdj).
This is not the first time a hindi song has been added to a Hollywood movie for its release in India.
