It is after a long time that jazz wizardry is unleashed as a binding element and the mode of continuity and soul of R D Burman would be mightily pleased that one of his iconic songs is now the title of a film.
Monica O My Darling is a film that unleashes the prowess of Huma Qureshi as an actor par excellence who can carry a film on her shoulders with panache. As a follow up of Maharani-2, Huma Qureshi has underlined the seamless manner in which she can slip into roles of characters and make a success out of it.
Mounted on the platform of a noir film, Monica O My Darling is a fast-paced thriller which has the potential to captivate the audience and keep them riveted till the end of the movie. While Raj Kumar Rao is the main hero, the film rides more on the...

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Star Trek: Discovery, The Flash, Empire and The Blacklist!
1 | As emotional as Once Upon a Time‘s “Regina awakening” scenes were, did the show not really give us that “moment” of her laying familiar eyes on grown Henry?
2 | Were you pleased to hear that Hawaii Five-0‘s Steve is apparently still dating Lynn? Or do you wonder where he and Danny find the time to maintain their respective romances, given their Five-0 jobs,...

Dubai Film Market is introducing a selection of Indian projects for the first time this year through a partnership with Europe’s Pjlf Three Rivers Residency.
The five projects are being scripted by hot new talents such as Kanu Behl, whose debut feature Titli premiered at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard in 2014, and Raj Rishi More, whose project is being produced by The Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra.
The Three Rivers residency provides writer-directors with a month-long distraction-free space to work on their scripts in the Italian countryside, with the help of an expert mentor, before presenting their projects at Diff. Although focusing on Indian projects in its first year, the organisers hope to open the programme to international writer-directors, including those from the Arab world, from next year.
“We feel writers sometimes need a much more concentrated period to hone their ideas and get away from all the distractions of a day job and daily life,” said producer...

This week’s Ancient Aliens examines whether the ancient Hindu god Shiva could have been an extraterrestrial. The experts discuss whether the deity, sometimes known as Shiva the Destroyer, was in fact the leader of an alien group who brought advanced technology to Earth. Shiva is one of a trinity of major gods in Hinduism. The name is Sanskrit and means The Auspicious One. More famously he is also known as the Creator, the Preserver and the Destroyer. American theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer quoted Shiva’s fellow deity Krishna after the first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16, 1945. He said: “Now I...read more...

India’s ‘Hijra’ community, as they’re referred to, comprises of transsexuals and transgenders. The community is commonly ignored by most, tolerated by some and misunderstood by all. However, in spite of all the prejudice they face in our society, they choose to smile and remain ‘Happy’. Yash Raj Film’s youth films wing, Y-Films joins hands with Brooke Bond Red Label to give a voice to their indomitable spirit without trying to get preachy or patronizing, in a language and through a medium that our world understands and loves; the language of Music, with the launch of India’s and, possibly, the world’s first transgender band – the Brooke Bond Red Label 6-Pack band!
It’s a theme that is extremely relevant, topical & important to make the world a warmer and more welcoming place for everyone – irrespective of religion, economic background or gender. The Brooke Bond Red Label 6-Pack...

Saturday’s episode opened with hosts Manish and Ranvir sitting in a Sholay style motorbike singing ‘Ye Dosti, Hum Nahin Todenge’ from the film Sholay. The song ended and contestant Mouni proved to be a “distraction” for the boys and the audience were led to thinking they have had an accident. The next scene had two coffins and the judges and contestants were crying as if the hosts Manish and Ranvir are no more. But of course, they both turned up (much to the “disappointment of the judges/contestants!) and the show began as normal. Thankfully!
The first contestant who was safe from eliminations, was Sophie. It was great to see her out of the face-off and being the first contestant to perform on the show. Sophie and her choreographer Deepak, performed an aerial act and their chosen dance style was Aerial and Freestyle. Before Sophie’s act began, we...

Ugly, Monsoon Shootout, Eega and Go Goa Gone are the four Indian films to be screened at the 32nd edition of the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, to take place in Belgium from 8-20 April, 2014.
Anurag Kashyap’s psychological thriller, Ugly, about the kidnapping of a film star’s daughter had premiered at Directors’ Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival last year. Amit Kumar’s Monsoon Shootout is an existential thriller. It has been screened at Cannes, Durban, Sydney, Jerusalem and London Indian Film Festival among others. Guru, a rookie cop, has Shiva, a suspected gangster, in his line of fire. Guru has a moment of reckoning. Should he shoot a man whose guilt he is uncertain of? The Jhalak family went out of their way last weekend by giving out some amazing filmy performances, and now it was time to get all dramatic! The challenge for the week being Nautanki, the contestants decided to make sure they disguise themselves in such a way that the stage is set and re-set on fire after every act!
Drama hit the stage with an Afro act performed by Drashti and Salman, dressed up as birds. Amazing postures, such perfect disguise and great choreography made their act very eye catching. Knowing this couple’s improvement graph so far, their performance was appreciated and they scored 30 on 30. Following them were Karanvir and Sneha, with a Laavni act. Karanvir turned ‘Kavya’ took breaths away with a hot booty shake and really great Lavni moves. Finally moving on from his ‘24’ fixation, Karanvir broke his own record as the duo scored 27 on 30.

After months of anticipation and hype, science fiction starved fans will finally get their to experience the world of Defiance.
Set in the not-to-distant future, Defiance introduces an exotically transformed planet Earth, in which seven unique alien races must co-exist peacefully (or as peacefully as a weekly science-fiction set series will allow) with the planet’s surviving humans. Two such humans are sisters played by Julie Benz and Mia Kirshner. Both of whom we had the pleasure of catching up with last week in Toronto to dish on their exciting new series and dabble on a slew of roles that have made them fan favourites.
Firstly, what was it about the Defiance pilot script that attracted you to a role that could presumably last five to seven years?
Julie Benz: What attracted me to the script was how dynamic all the female characters are. They’re extremely complex woman...

Ganesh Chaturthi is the day lord Shiva declared his son Ganesha as superior to all the gods. Ganesha is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new venture or at the start of travel in Hindu Religion.
The festival, which starts today and lasts ten days, is one of the most prominent festivals of Maharashtra. And while Bollywood stars celebrate the festival in a big way off-screen, they have more than often been seen singing and dancing on screen expressing their devotion.
Here are some of our most favorite Bollywood songs which are dedicated to the Elephant God.
Deva Ho Deva – Hum Se Badhkar Kaun (1981)
Ganpati Bappa Morya – Dard Ka Rishta (1982)

Oscar nominated director Deepa Mehta and multi-award-winning author Salman Rushdie's screen adaptation of his extraordinary multi award-winning international bestselling novel Midnight's Children will commence shooting in Sri Lanka in January 2011. Shabana Azmi, Irrfan Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Nandita Das, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Seema Biswas will star in the English language film. The film is being shot in Sri Lanka because Mehta has sworn off India following her nightmare experience shooting Water at Varanasi locations. Water was subsequently shot in Sri Lanka. But Midnight's Children could yet run into problems because in the late 1990s the BBC was planning to film a five-part mini-series of the novel with Rahul Bose in the lead, but due to pressure from the Muslim community in Sri Lanka, the filming permit was revoked and the project was cancelled. Mehta and Rushdie have been working together on the screenplay for the past two years.

Minimalist art has always looked at life pretty simply. It’s the urge to reflect life devoid of the creator’s own personal, social or demographic influence is what has made this form of art so appealing. Without going into the debate of bridging Modern with the Post-modern it is probably safe to assume, doing more with less is difficult to produce and even more difficult to apprehend. Watercolour for example is a minimalist medium with respect to the transparency water brings into the medium – dark shades placed on the canvas as pigments from the tube, adding water dilutes it. So to say, watercolour leaves spaces instead of painting that space opaque. Calligraphy is one of the popular exponents of the power of the medium – minimal, simple and poignant. In literature, haiku closely matches minimalism – in content where simplicity in itself is ultimately sophisticated. Thus it’s...

P.K Nair writes about John Abraham’s Malayalam film ‘Amma Ariyan'...
Master of Imperfection
If I were to pick up one Malayalam film , that is truly a landmark , my choice would unhesitatingly be John Abraham’s 1986 black and white political reportage Amma Ariyan ( Report to Mother ). John who died young in May 1987, I would recall with fond memories as an “erratic genius”. All his films (he made only four features) are master works of imperfection. He never believed in cosmetic perfection in Cinema let alone in Life itself. No wonder he could not get along with self styled “ perfectionists “ who loathed him when he was alive and struggling but were quick to join the bandwagon to sing euologies, once he is no longer there.

Top Mollywood actress Ananya appears to have bagged a role in Mohanlal’s Kandahar, in which Amitabh has also promised to play a substantial role. The film is based on the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight Ic-814 in 1999 while on its way from Kathmandu to New Delhi on Christmas Eve. It was forced to land in three different airports -- Amritsar, Lahore, and Dubai -- before spending a week on the tarmac in Kandahar with 186 hostages on board.
Ananya will begin shooting for the movie when she has completed her current commitments, including Krishna’s upcoming Seedan. She has also just finished work on Amayakudu, which stars Krishnudu in a complicated plot that involves him falling in love with one girl, whilst another girl falls in love with him, and his parents choose a third girl for him. How will he get out of that one?
