[This story includes major spoilers from The Crowded Room finale, “Judgment.”]
Tom Holland began a story on The Crowded Room that came to a shocking — albeit, satisfying — conclusion with the AppleTV+ series’ finale.
When the 10-episode limited series first introduced audiences to Holland’s Danny Sullivan, some knew his story would be loosely based on the real-life experiences of Billy Milligan, the first person diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder and the first to be acquitted of a major crime due to his condition.
Those who didn’t know the basis for the long-gestating series (The Crowded Room, inspired by the 1981 nonfiction novel The Minds of Billy Milligan, has circled around Hollywood since the 1990s) were faced with major reveals in almost every episode of the second half of the season, starting with the fact that most of the people Danny had been interacting with throughout the show (Sasha Lane, Lior Raz, Sam Vartholomeos, Jason Isaacs and...

For the final season of Barry, cinematographer Carl Herse had the opportunity to work alongside only one director, Bill Hader, for the entire season. After an escape from prison midseason, the story jumps forward 10 years, which presented an interesting challenge for Herse, who needed to visually “express that time passed, but still make the show feel like Barry.” Their solution was to focus on Barry (Hader) and Sally (Sarah Goldberg), along with their son, rather than all of the major characters, and build out from there. Although ending the show is bittersweet for Herse, he says he couldn’t be happier with how it ends.

This article contains spoilers for the "Barry" series finale.
One of my favorite episodes of "The Sopranos" is "The Test Dream," in which Tony (James Gandolfini) falls asleep in a hotel room and has a surreal dream. Whenever "The Sopranos" needed to be especially foreboding, it went to dream sequences. Season 6 features a multi-episode one when Tony, in a coma and on death's door, has a vision of an alternate life for himself as a law-abiding middle-aged salesman. That's why when "Barry" started going surreal in season 3 — our eponymous protagonist (Bill Hader) saw himself standing on a beach alongside all his victims — my mind jumped to "The Sopranos."
The two HBO shows have more in common than you'd think, down to the same guiding question: can people change? "The Sopranos" is at its core about a man in therapy, a process that is supposed to help you reshape yourself. "Barry...

This article contains spoilers for the "Barry" series finale.
I have a soft spot for Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg), the aspiring diva starlet of "Barry." Sure, she's selfish and has poor judgment, but from all the past abuse she's suffered, you understand how she got like this. Unlike the rest of the cast, there's always a feeling that Sally could truly learn to be better, so it's extra disappointing that she rarely does. To paraphrase her forming teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler), "She's deeply human." So, I was pleased that the series finale, "wow," gave her as happy an ending as possible.
It's important to remember Sally's backstory when viewing the finale. She fled from her abusive first husband Sam (Joe Massingill) by leaving in the middle of the night. In "wow," she repeats this after Barry declines to turn himself in. Sally had previously sworn she'd never be with a violent man again,...

Just before he confronts the gangsters who’ve abducted his family, Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) takes a moment in the parking lot. “Lord, I’m gonna die tonight. Please give me the strength to sacrifice myself so that my son can live a long and pious life,” he prays. “And that by doing this, all my sins will be washed and I will be redeemed in your eyes, and I will be able to sit next to you in my rightful place in the kingdom of heaven for all eternity. Amen.”
As it turns out, the encounter never actually comes to that. Barry’s barely out of the car when Fuches (Stephen Root) ushers Barry’s unharmed son John (Zachary Golinger) straight to him, then disappears into the night without a word. Hader‘s face registers less relief than disappointment. Dying for John would’ve been hard, but it would’ve been straightforward.

This article contains spoilers for the "Barry" series finale.
Looking back, the relatively innocent first few episodes of "Barry" back in season 1 seem like they belong to an entirely different show compared to where the dark final season and the crushing series finale, "wow," winds up by the time the credits roll for the last time. From the very beginning, the show has played with the difference between the make believe drama on the theater stage and the high stakes consequences of the real world. Originally, the character of Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) chose Gene Cousineau's (Henry Winkler) acting class as a respite from moonlighting as a murderous hitman. However, as the series went on, the line between Barry's stage life and real life started to blur, causing every major character to become caught up in the wake of Barry's narcissism and delusions of grandeur.

"If I can change ... and you can change ... everybody can change!!!" Of course, those were the immortal words uttered by boxing champ Rocky Balboa in 1985 when he solved the Cold War (citation needed), yet they're also words that resonate for the characters in HBO's "Barry."
When the series (which just ended its run with the final episode of its fourth season) began in 2018, it seemed to be the tale of Barry Berkman (Bill Hader), an ex-Marine turned assassin-for-hire who was looking to escape his existence of dread and death and found a guiding light in the form of acting. Brought into the Los Angeles struggling actor fold by teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) and fellow student (and later girlfriend) Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg), Barry believed that true change was possible via working out his deep-seated trauma and mental issues on stage.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the “Barry” finale, Season 4, Episode 7, “Wow.”]
There are plenty of things that “Barry” chose not to hide, in the end. Like a henchman with his own entrails spilled out for him to see, the show left few details to the imagination in its series-ending “Wow,” a finale designed to shock and pay off in equal measures, largely succeeding on both fronts.
If there’s any key to unlocking “Wow,” it’s not exactly love (as we guessed last week), but acceptance. This 35-minute final chapter did give each of its main players a choice, paired with the closest thing any of them would get to a way out from a couple of converging storms. With this show, “happy” is a fraught descriptor, but the only characters who got an ending close to their terms are the ones that actually embraced the idea of an ending in the first place.

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from the series finale of HBO‘s Barry.
“Wow.”
Not only is this the title of the Barry series finale, written and directed by co-creator and star, Bill Hader. It’s also, naturally, the sentiment with which we, as an audience, are left.
By the end of the episode, Hader’s hitman-turned-actor is dead, even if he was about to turn himself in to the police, shot in the chest and head by his one-time acting teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler). Also dead is NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan), who’s shot after a stand-off with Fuches (Stephen Root).
Barry’s acting-class love Sally (Sarah Goldberg) and son John (Zachary Golinger) survive the shoutout at NoHo Hank’s offices, where they were being held captive, after Sally admits to John that both she and Barry are murderers, with Fuches disappearing into the wind. We...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Barry series finale “wow.”] Barry could only end with violence — and that’s exactly what happened in the series finale, written and directed by Bill Hader. Noho Hank (Anthony Carrigan) was killed by Fuches (Stephen Root), after refusing to make a deal with him; everyone else present — except Fuches, Sally (Sarah Goldberg), and her and Barry’s son, John (Zachary Golinger) — was also shot. After a brief reunion with John, Barry went to see Gene (Henry Winkler), who killed him. The series ended with John watching the Hollywood version of what happened between Barry and Gene, which painted the acting teacher as the bad guy, and before the credits featured “Gene is currently serving life in prison for the murders of Janie and Barry. Pfc Barry was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors.” Root takes us inside the finale, ponders what’s next for Fuches, and more. What ...

Ok, everyone, let's breathe. For some, there may be more no more compelling show on TV right now than the other big HBO series that wrapped up tonight, "Succession." But for many of us, the show in question is "Barry," the hybrid of dark comedy and suspense thriller that has leaned quite heavily on the latter part of that hybrid in its fourth and final season. Said season has now come to a close, and so now we're left with the pieces of what "Barry" left behind.
In full transparency, I went into "wow," the finale of "Barry" with two questions on my mind: would Barry (Bill Hader) die, and would his son John (Zachary Golinger) survive? The previous episode gave us quite the cliffhanger: Barry had escaped the makeshift prison in the garage of Jim Moss (Robert Wisdom) to find that NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) had abducted Sally (Sarah Goldberg...

At the end of Barry’s penultimate episode, no one is safe. Sally (Sarah Goldberg) and her son John (Zachary Golinger) are being held at gunpoint by NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan), who’s put a target on his own back after attempting to blow up Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root) and his men, who themselves are still in danger. Barry (Bill Hader), who is in Los Angeles for the sole purpose of killing Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler), just narrowly escaped a grizzly, tortuous death by the hand of Jim Moss (Robert Wisdom). And then of course there are the countless innocent bystanders who at any moment could get wrapped up in a number of impending violent acts.

It’s the end of the TV world as we know it. This Memorial Day weekend marks not only the final weekend of this Emmy season, but a trio of well-earned series finales as well.
First up is “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which is looking to return to the top after snagging the Emmy for Best Comedy Series (among other awards) for its first season in 2018. The fifth and final season saw Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) working as a writer on the Johnny Carson-esque late night series “The Gordon Ford Show.” In the comedy’s swan song, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, she swings for the fences after Ford (Reid Scott) invites her on the show. Midge’s ambitious final set might just be what it takes to launch Brosnahan — who has earned a Best Comedy Actress nomination for each of the four previous seasons, winning in...

Hard though it may be to believe, there are just two episodes left in the HBO series "Barry," which used to lean more heavily on the comic side of things even amidst its dark setup. Now, though, it's pretty much all in on darkness. And with "a nice meal," the title belies a similar sense of grimness. Last week left off on quite the cliffhanger: Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) had come very close to his mission of returning to Los Angeles and killing his old acting teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) for potentially consulting on a biopic of his life, before being captured by Jim Moss (Robert Wisdom) and brought to his garage, where we know weaker men have barely withstood the terror of this grieving father/ex-cop. [Editor’s Note: Spoilers ahead for Barry Season 4, Episode 7, “a nice meal.”]
As a pure plot engine, Barry’s penultimate episode, “a nice meal,” is incredibly satisfying. You can almost hear the clink of metal as the pieces fall into place for the series finale, aligning the major characters for a high stakes confrontation. NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) has kidnapped Sally (Sarah Goldberg) and John (Zachary Golinger), and he’s told Barry (Bill Hader) where to find them. That’s his scheme to deliver Barry to Fuches (Stephen Root), who’s determined to kill his protege at last. Things are bound to get complicated, however, now that the police are convinced Gene (Henry Winkler) helped orchestrate Janice’s murder. That gives the acting teacher an urgent reason to get the spotlight back on the actual criminals. With all these people racing toward each other, the collision ought to be spectacular.

When last we left Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) and Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg) on the HBO series "Barry," they were in great distress. (When has that ever not been true?) Barry and Sally have made a meager life for themselves and their son John (Zachary Golinger) in middle America for eight years, thanks to being in the FBI Witness Protection program after Barry revealed secrets of his time with the Chechen mob to get out of jail. They've reinvented themselves as Clark and Emily, a married couple that doesn't do much aside from home-schooling John, and working at a local diner. But Sally and Barry are both shocked to learn, via the Hollywood Reporter, that a) Warner Bros. is pursuing a biopic about Barry's life as a hitman/acting student and b) Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) has come out of hiding after having shot his son Leo (Andrew Leeds) to purportedly consult on the film.

Bill Hader has an idea for a horror movie. In a recent interview with Deadline, the actor and filmmaker spoke up about multiple ideas he has for upcoming projects, including a film that he calls "'Barry'-like in tone, but instead of a crime thing, it's like a horror thing." On a surface level, the comedy star's planned genre pivot may seem surprising, but with his work on "Barry" in mind, it actually seems like a no-brainer. The HBO series about a hitman turned actor turned (most recently) prison escapee uses its cinematography, sound design, and editing to create an often intense viewing atmosphere. "Barry" may not be full-blown horror, but sometimes it feels like it is.

Is it just me or this room feeling a little ... crowded? Thankfully, that's not a line of dialogue ever spoken in the trailer for this upcoming Apple TV+ series, but it certainly could apply to the long-winded development of this project. Originally conceived as a James Cameron movie with John Cusack rumored to be in the lead back in the 1990s before Leonardo DiCaprio took a short-lived swing at it in 2015, "The Crowded Room" is now finally coming to a small screen near you as an Apple TV+ drama series. In place of Cusack or DiCaprio, however, viewers will now get to see a mop-haired Tom Holland in the lead role as the prime suspect of a series of disappearances.
Set in late 1970s New York (hence the "Spider-Man" actor's rather unflattering hair), the investigation at the center of "The Crowded Room" pits Amanda Seyfried's interrogator Rya Goodwin directly...

This post contains spoilers for "Barry" season 4, episode 5.
In the latest episode of "Barry," entitled "tricky legacies," the HBO show takes a huge narrative risk by sending the series and its characters eight years into the future. By placing Barry (now named Clark) and Sally (now Emily) in the middle of nowhere and on the run, the final season is also potentially jeopardizing the show's ability to still deliver the same sudden thrills and uncomfortable laughs that fans have come to expect week-to-week. Now with a son of their own named John (Zachary Golinger), Barry appears to be trying to keep his makeshift family life inside a tightly controlled bubble where everyone is safe from the outside world.
Just as Barry has taken a new name and made a new life for him and his family, he's trying to craft a better, more righteous version of himself that's ultimately making...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Tricky Legacies,” the fifth episode of “Barry” Season 4.
At the end of last week’s “Barry,” we meet John (Zachary Golinger). He’s an innocent young boy, but his existence is completely terrifying: It means that Barry (Bill Hader) and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) have brought a child into their violent, conspiratorial world. But John is being raised against a rural Midwestern landscape that matches Barry’s hallucinations from prison at the beginning of Season 4 — as though there’s a chance he’s a figment of Barry’s imagination, too.
In Episode 5, we re-meet Barry and Sally, who have aged considerably, and bear new accents and names. They’re raising John as a devout Christian, with Barry actually seeming to believe what he’s preaching. Sally, on the other hand, doesn’t have the same delusions. She puts on a messy brunette wig every...

[This story contains spoilers for Barry season four, episode five, “Tricky Legacies.”]
Barry star Bill Hader didn’t care how Barry and Sally got to where they were going; his only concern was that they were there.
Written and directed by Hader, the fifth episode of Barry’s final season confirms that the ending of episode four was anything but fantasy. It’s now been eight years since Barry and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) decided to run away together and the couple, who are now known as Clark and Emily, are living with their son, John (Zachary Golinger), in the middle of nowhere. Barry is suddenly a man of faith who perpetually stays at home to school his son and shelter him from the truth of who his parents actually are. Meanwhile, a wig-donning Sally is working as a server at a diner, and she routinely drowns her sorrows in a bottle to get through the days. She may have had dreams of being a working actor,...

Well, everyone, it's been 8 years. Not for all of us, as we watch week to week the latest horrifying exploits of hitman/actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) in the HBO show "Barry." But for Barry and Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg), it's been 8 years since the events of last week's episode, in which Barry had escaped from prison and hid in Sally's apartment, to find that she was surprisingly willing to join him in Witness Protection for having named names to the FBI. Last week's installment ended with the shock that a long enough period of time had elapsed so that Barry and Sally not only had new identities in the middle of the country, but also had a son named John (Zachary Golinger). "tricky legacies", marking the start of the back half of the show's final season, is not remotely as eventful as last week's episode, which not only featured...
