“I can quote it,” Nubia: Queen of the Amazons writer Stephanie Williams says of the first Nubia story ever published. “That’s how much I read it.”
First created by Robert Kanigher and Don Heck in the pages of 1973’s Wonder Woman #204, Nubia marked a historic moment for DC Comics at the time. This was the publisher’s first Black woman superhero. Not only that, she was initially established as Diana’s fraternal twin sister, lost to time and rival gods, returning to claim the title of Wonder Woman from her sister. For readers of the era, this marked something of a “soft reboot” for Wonder Woman, long before such a word was commonly used. It gave the creative team an excuse to re-tell Diana’s origin story, while adding new details that allowed them to bring in a substantial new character with deep ties to the title’s history.

This article contains spoilers for the last two years or so of Marvel X-Men comics.
“Humans of the planet Earth. While you slept, the world changed.”
The opening line of Jonathan Hickman and Pepe Larraz’s House of X hit like a bolt of lightning, and everything it promised paid off. Hickman took over the floundering X-Men line of comics, isolated and diminished after years of corporate meddling, and reinvigorated them creatively and financially with an exciting five-year plan.
House of X and Powers of X was Hickman, Larraz, Rb Silva and Marte Gracia’s overture. It started with a barrage of resets and retcons: the opening page of House of X #1 heralded the change with a designed infographic with Professor X announcing the new order to the world, and the issue jumped right in with what appeared to be Cyclops hatching from an egg with a sinister-looking, walking, helmeted Professor X summoning him.

When Marie Javins was announced as Editor-in-Chief of DC Comics in 2020, the quote that accompanied her hiring stated, “As a young girl devouring comics of Wonder Woman, Nubia, and Supergirl, I never dreamed that decades later, I’d be at the helm of the mighty DC Comics.” A year later, on Wonder Woman’s 80th anniversary, the publisher is heading into an epic new age for Diana, Nubia, and the Amazons.
Leading into 2022’s Trial of the Amazons—the first Wonder Woman crossover event in decades—DC Comics is ramping up a series of new stories centered on the all-female race of warriors. The core Wonder Woman title reintroduces Diana after her inter-dimensional adventures and brush with death in Dark Nights: Death Metal, while Nubia and the Amazons takes readers back to Themyscira where Diana’s sister Nubia has taken the throne. Now that comic books have been around as long as they have, and we are coming up to the one hundredth year anniversary of the American comic book industry in the not too distant future, literally tens of thousands of characters have been created to date. Only a few have the legs to last the distance, and Green Arrow is one of the lucky few. Created way back in 1941, he was originally a Robin Hood take off on Batman. Rich, ArrowCar, Arrow Cave, kid sidekick, you get the picture. He had reasonable success back in the day but in more modern times he never really rose above second banana status, until Denny O’Neil and then Mike Grell gave him a more mature makeover and he really shone. Wolverine #8 Writer: Benjamin Percy | Artists: Adam Kubert & Viktor Bogdanovic | Colourists: Antonio Fabela & Matthew Wilson | Letters: Cory Petit
I actually really enjoyed this issue despite it not delivering on the cover image. As a sidenote, the cover must be the first time Adam Kubert has drawn Maverick since the 90’s and he looks amazing! The mask doesn’t look a joke no more as he steals all the limelight from the titular star. The pace and tone of the story made for a nice change after all the fanfare of X of Swords. This is the 350th issue of all incarnations of Wolverine as an ongoing series. Apart from being a double sized issue it doesn’t really mark the fact. The issue is split into two stories with the first being called a prologue. It is a ten page prologue but really it just works as an extended opening to the second story.

If there was a golden age of serial fiction, it might have been the era when Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Mark Twain were publishing their stories-in-installments in print periodicals, with their readers desperately waiting for the next part of the tale. But if that’s true, right now might just be the platinum age of serial fiction. The digital medium is perfect for publishing stories as episodes, and modern readers who are used to receiving stories in an episodic format, thanks to television, may appreciate the medium in a more nuanced way than their historical predecessors.
Modern serials make use of both styles of writing. Some rely on a single author who publishes their novel bit by bit, keeping readers hooked. Others are developed in a television-style writer’s room. Some feature added features like music or illustrations, making use of transmedia opportunities made possible in the digital world.

I’m not entirely sure why, but DC have always been far better than Marvel with anthology books. Possibly because of their extended history, that they just have that much more material than Marvel had, and could make extra money by packaging old, sorry ‘classic’, reprints with the odd new story or framing sequences. The recent run of DC anniversary issues have also seen them put out some rather good 100 page anthologies, but now with all new material, though with very definite nods towards source material of the past. Which brings us to this ‘Guidebook’. Odd title in a way, as it’s appeared too far down the line into the event to be a guide for anything, but it’s certainly a good opportunity to fill in gaps in the main book, and to give short, sweet glimpses at some of the peripheral characters.

This tie-in to Marvel’s big Empyre event was slotted as the first big foray into the rest of the Marvel Universe for the Krakoans post-House of X/Powers of X, but the Covid-related shutdown pushed the book back. Throughout the long wait, readers have been eager to see how the mutants would play with the rest of the world, but I think most were expecting a fun little throwaway series.
What we’re getting instead is something extremely consequential to the bigger story that the X-team is telling. The series shows a great deal of storytelling promise heading into X of Swords, the first big crossover of the Dawn of X era.
The Pretender Wanda Maximoff has atoned! Or at least, she tried to atone...

The first major X-Men crossover since Jonathan Hickman and crew’s big X-Men reset in House of X/Powers of X may have been delayed by the coronavirus, but it’s still coming, and it’s still enormous. Further proof of that came with the announcement of X of Swords: Stasis, the midpoint issue in the 22-part crossover, coming in September. And with that announcement, we got our first look at the people who may be the foes of the big crossover: the Swordbearers of Arakko.
The Swordbearers include The White Sword, Isca the Unbeaten, Bei the Blood Moon, Solem, Redroot the Forest, Summoner, Pogg Ur-Pogg, a classified fighter, and two of Apocalypse’s first Horsemen, Death and War. Notably missing from this crew are the other two original Horsemen, Famine and Pestilence, though they’re both standing with Apocalypse over a pile of X-corpses on a newly...

Although most of WarnerMedia's film productions are in current lockdown, the company's DC Comics continues to publish new comic book titles for August 2020, filled with fresh stories and compelling imagery:
"Dceased: Dead Planet" #2 is written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Trevor Hairsine, Gigi Baldassini with covers by Francesco Mattina and Ben Olivier:
"...the 'Justice League' is trapped on Earth, and they've discovered that life still survives on this dead planet! Survival is precarious, though and with billions of infected still roaming the surface, death lies around every corner. We knew Dark Nights: Death Metal, the big DC megaevent from Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion and Fco Plascencia, was reworked when it got delayed. DC just announced how much it was reworked.
The main series has been expanded from six to seven issues, with a skip month planned for September. However, to help fill us up for that break, we get two supplemental comics: Dark Nights: Death Metal Guidebook #1 on August 11th, and Dark Nights: Death Metal Legends of the Dark Knights #1 on August 25th.
Death Metal is the follow up to Dark Nights: Metal, the series that introduced the Dark Multiverse and its evil coterie of Batmen (including the Batman Who Laughs) to the Dcu; to Snyder’s Justice League, which brought dark goddess Perpetua in from her prison in the Source Wall, to tear down the existing multiverse and replace it with something more pliable; and to Hell Arisen,...

Wonder Woman has had quite the renaissance in recent years, and as one of the Big Three (with Superman and Batman) it is thoroughly deserved. You don’t get continually published since 1941 unless you have something that clicks with readers after all. She first appeared in All-Star Comics #8 in 1941, graduated to her own book with Sensation Comics #1 in 1942, and has never looked back since. She has gone through several’ fad’ phases down the years, such as the depowered white jump suit era (yikes), and has sometimes struggled with getting enough readers to pick up her book. Historically, though, having a female character they are trying to aim at girls but written by middle aged men, doesn’t really work, and also ends up alienating the male audience. Most self respecting teenage boys back in the day wouldn’t pick up...

Riri Williams’ self-titled series Ironheart may have wrapped up last November, but readers will hardly have time to miss the M.I.T. prodigy as she makes her return in April’s 2020 Ironheart, a two-issue story written by Morbius scribe Vita Ayala and Queen of Bad Dreams‘ Danny Lore, who also co-wrote Dynamite’s latest James Bond comic together.
The micro-series will serve as a tie-in to this year’s six-part Iron Man 2020 event from Amazing Spider-Man penmen Dan Slott and Christos Gage, along with the three-part Force Works 2020, the two-part Machine Man 2020, the two-part Rescue 2020, the two-part iWolverine 2020 (formerly titled Weapon.Exe 2020), and the standalone Iron Age 2020.

Let’s be honest here, Michael Morbius has had several shots at solo stardom down the years and none have really taken. He’s a perfectly decent supporting character or guest star, but suffers from the same problems that all ‘fad’ characters do. Originally just created as a throwaway Spider-Man villain by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane way back in 1971, mainly as a way of enjoying the new ‘horror characters are no longer banned’ loosening of the comic code, he had a decent run in the 1970′s as a recurring villain then a tragic anti-hero, in the vein of Werewolf By Night and other Marvel horror characters. He then fell back into semi-obscurity before the horror revival in the early 1990′s saw him get his own book for a time. So why a relaunch now? I’m sure...

It’s not easy being the greatest female icon in the history of American comic books but, even after more than seven decades on the job, the Amazon princess they call Wonder Woman handles that burden with noble grace and singular determination.
That’s one way to interpret the striking, just-released cover artwork for the upcoming, 96-page, prestige-format, 750th issue of Wonder Woman from Burbank-based publisher DC Comics. The milestone issue will hit shelves at brick-and-mortar retailers on January 22, the same day it lands on the virtual spinner racks of online retailers.
The image evokes the Hellenic imagery of mighty Atlas hefting the world on his Titan shoulder and it was illustrated by Catwoman writer/artist Joëlle Jones, just one of the many DC stars who made contributions to commemorative issue.
Announced interior artists include Colleen Doran, Jesus Merino, Elena Casagrade, Gabriel Picolo, and Wonder Woman Rebirth illustrator Nicola Scott.

Wonder Woman #750 features an all-star lineup of talent.
Action Comics and Detective Comics went back to legacy numbering for huge milestones. In January, the Trinity is complete, as it's Wonder Woman's turn.
DC announced a giant anniversary issue - Wonder Woman #750 - coming January 22nd. It will be a 96 page comic, and like Action Comics and Detective Comics #1000, it will be a bit of a short story jam session. However, unlike those two thousandth issues, Wonder Woman #750 mixes in some newer talent to go with the classic Diana creators who are almost fundamentally required by the universe to be in here.
The book will feature new stories from Greg Rucka and Gail Simone, arguably the two most accomplished and important Wonder Woman writers still making comics today. Rucka wrote Diana's Rebirth arc that brought her up to date in the new continuity in addition to fleshing out...
