Mason was most recently the co-creator, showrunner, executive producer, and director on the Showtime series “Work in Progress.” Samantha Kurtzman-Counter and Abbie Schiller of The Mother Company will also executive produce. The Covid-19 pandemic affected the season 2 production of Showtime’s Work In Progress, but co-creator/executive producer/writer and star Abby McEnany said the defining crisis of 2020 will also be featured on-screen.

During the series’ Atx Television Festival panel on Friday, McEnany joined showrunner Lilly Wachowski, co-star Celeste Pechous, writer Samantha Irby and director Yance Ford to talk all things Work In Progress, from the writing process to future storylines with moderator Trish Bendix.

The “Glee” alum will play the curmudgeonly Grinch himself for the televised musical adaptation of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” which will air Dec. 9 at 8 p.m.
Per NBC, “Dr. Seuss’ famous book tells the story of a reclusive Grinch who plotted from his cave atop snowy Mt. Crumpit to steal Christmas from the Whos in Who-ville. Then on Christmas Eve, disguised as Santa Claus and enlisting his loyal dog Max as a reindeer, the Grinch traveled to Who-ville to scoop up the Whos’ gifts and decorations. Much to his surprise on Christmas morning, the Whos were unfazed and celebrated the holiday with a heartwarming display of joy and love.”

NBC is inviting the Grinch to share its holiday season: The network will air a two-hour production of Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical! on December 9. Staged at the Troubadour Theatre in London, the musical production will star Glee‘s Matthew Morrison as the small-hearted Grinch and Denis O’Hare as his hapless mutt Max played on Broadway during the holiday seasons of 2006 and 2007.
In the NBC version, the Cindy-Lou Who character will be played by young newcomer Amelia Minto. Producers have also assembled an ensemble of musical theater actors from London’s West End to complete the cast.
“Dr. Seuss is an indelible part of all of our lives and we’re thrilled to bring a stage production of The Grinch Musical! to our audience,” said Doug Vaughan, Executive Vice President, Special Programs, NBC Entertainment. “This is a perfect addition to our annual holiday program traditions and a telecast the entire family will enjoy.”
The staging is by director Max Webster, and Julia Knowles directs for television. Additional script material is by Simon Nye, with sets by designer Peter Bingemann.
Previous musicals staged in recent years by NBC The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, The Wiz, Hairspray and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.
Though Morrison became a household name on Glee, he has an extensive stage background, including roles in Broadway’s Footloose, Hairspray, and The Light in the Piazza. More recently, Morrison starred as J.M. Barrie in the Broadway musical Finding Neverland. Additional TV credits include The Good Wife, Grey’s Anatomy and American Horror Story: 1984. Morrison is represented by Podwall Entertainment, ICM Partners and Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical is presented in association with Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Running Subway, produced by Penny Lane Entertainment Television and Simon Friend Entertainment. Lee Connolly, Simon Friend, Joshua Rosenblum and James Sanna serve as executive producers. Morrison also serves as a producer on the telecast.
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical! will air on NBC Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt from the Troubadour Theatre in London.

Abby McEnany knows there are not a lot of people who look like her on TV. She knew it 30 years ago, when the character of Pat, a chubby nerd whose inscrutable gender was the scene’s only punchline, appeared on “Saturday Night Live.” Here, finally, was someone who did look like Abby on TV. There was just one problem: Pat’s sole reason for making it to screen was so that people could laugh at their appearance.
Nearly three decades after Pat’s “SNL” debut — thanks to McEnany and her co-creator Tim Mason — another androgynous, heavyset, nerdy, butch lesbian has miraculously made her way to television. She’s glorious, she’s hilarious, and she’s definitely having the last laugh.
The show is called “Work In Progress,” and it wraps a superlative first season this Sunday. In just eight 30-minute episodes, “Work in Progress” has radically reshaped what queer stories can look like on TV,...

Following the premiere of “The L Word: Generation Q,” queer audiences who lined up outside viewing parties for the nostalgia-tv event of the year would be wise to leave the TV on for another half-hour. If they do, they will be delightfully surprised by “Work in Progress,” the most radical queer show to ever make its way to television.
Showtime’s new half-hour comedy stars co-writer Abby McEnany, a Chicago improv mainstay who created the show with director Tim Mason (Lilly Wachowski is also an Ep and writer). The semi-autobiographical series follows Abby — a suicidal, funny, heavyset butch with Ocd — as she embarks on a relationship with a much younger trans man. In the four half-hour episodes provided to critics, “Work in Progress” sensitively mines comedy from body shame, mental illness, trans literacy, consent, and gender policing — all through Abby’s hilariously neurotic point of view.

There’s never a second that Abby (co-creator Abby McEnany) is unaware of all the things that make her different from the characters we’re used to seeing on TV, let alone those that typically get to anchor their own shows. She’s a butch “queer fat dyke” (her words) with Ocd whose deep insecurity about all the above manifest in often debilitating suicidal tendencies. She knows all this about herself, and she accepts it. (As does “Work in Progress”; one of the best things about the show is how it shades Abby out in such a way that reducing her to any one of those bullet points is impossible.) But the pressure of constantly being othered and struggling to regulate herself also makes her life consistently hard enough that, as she tells her therapist in the first minutes of the series, she’s determined to end it in 180 days time.

Early in the new Showtime dramedy Work in Progress, Abby (Abby McEnany) tells her therapist, “I’m 45, I’m fat. I’m this queer dyke who hasn’t done shit in her life, and that is my identity?”
This withering self-assessment comes only moments after Abby has announced plans to kill herself in 180 days if things don’t improve. She is depressed about how small and dull her life seems in comparison to all the fun and excitement the rest of the world — straight and, especially, gay — seems to be having around her.

As a first-time full-time series star, writer and creator, Abby McEnany and her real-life story have threads reminiscent of “Alice in Wonderland.” Or perhaps even “Cinderella.” But as the belle of Showtime’s ball who is digging deep down the rabbit hole of TV production for the very first time with “Work in Progress,” she also brings to mind “The Princess and the Pea.”
If that pea were an almond.
“Not only do I hate almonds, but it’s just like, ‘Get the f— out of my eating area. That’s none of your f—ing business.’ Almonds are the thing, you know? And of course as a fat person it really sucks that my favorite nut is a peanut,” McEnany says.
“There are a lot of people out there who judge fat people and what they eat, and so almonds stand for another thing. People are like, ‘Hey I’m just helping you out.

Showtime’s upcoming series “Work in Progress” is billed as “a comedy about being out and down.” Described as “a funny and uniquely human comedy,” improv comedian Abby McEnany stars as Abby, “a 45-year-old self-identified fat, queer dyke from Chicago whose misfortune and despair unexpectedly lead her to a vibrantly transformative relationship.” The series is based on McEnany’s solo show, which was originally produced in 2016 at the iO Theater in Chicago.
In the official trailer for “Work in Progress” — which you can watch below — Abby is met with a series of unfortunate events. She blames herself for her therapist dying during a session, she doesn’t have a child, she’s riddled with anxieties she can’t explain and has difficulties in fixing, and she finally comes face-to-face with Julia Sweeney, the woman whose character Pat (of “Saturday Night Live’s” “It’s Pat” fame) ruined her life.

Showtime released the first trailer for the upcoming comedy “Work in Progress,” starring Abby McEnany as a woman whose life is so miserable, her therapist literally drops dead in the middle of a session.
Not great for Abby, but she bounces back from it quickly with a little nudge from her sister and a new relationship with an attractive waiter played by Theo Germaine (“The Politician”).
McEnany co-created the eight-episode comedy with Tim Mason and stars as Abby, a character the network describes as “a 45-year-old self-identified fat, queer dyke from Chicago whose misfortune and despair unexpectedly lead her to a vibrantly transformative relationship.” She serves as co-showrunner on the show with Mason and Lilly Wachowski.

Chicago improv veteran and story teller Abby McEnany is living a Cinderella story: The $30,000 pilot she created with Tim Mason and stars in, A Work In Progress, went to Sundance and is now a Showtime series set to premiere in December. Not bad for a self-identified middle-aged, fat, queer dyke who has suffered from Ocd and clinical depression.
McEnany said Season 1 will continue the story of her character’s budding romance with Chris, a millennial transman portrayed by Theo Germaine.
McEnany appeared a show panel at Showtime’s TCA day Friday with Mason and Lilly Wachowski (The Matrix franchise and Sense8 co-creator) who was brought on as executive producer and co-writer when the project was tapped for a series. Lilly Wachowski discussed her upcoming Showtime comedy series “Work In Progress” at the network’s Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, alongside the show’s creators Abby McEnany and Tim Mason, and tackling the series’ central themes of mental illness and depression.
