Queen Elizabeth I's teenage years will no longer be charted at Starz.
Deadline has revealed the premium cabler has canceled the Alicia von Rittberg series after just one season.
The series launched in the U.S. and Starz territories around the globe in June.
Reviews were decent, but Starz hadn't been forthcoming about viewership statistics, which could signal that the interest was not high enough to sustain the series.
Here's the logline:
Long before she ascended the throne, young Elizabeth Tudor, played by Alicia von Rittberg, was an orphaned teenager who became embroiled in the political and sexual politics of the English court.
The death of King Henry VIII sees his nine-year-old son Edward, played by Oliver Zetterström, take the throne and sets into motion a dangerous scramble for power when Elizabeth, Edward and their sister Mary, played by Romola Garai find themselves pawns in a game between the great...

Carving out quite a niche in stylistic psychological horror thrills with Berberian Sound Studio, The Duke of Burgundy, and In Fabric, Peter Strickland returned earlier this year with Flux Gourmet, a culinary-focused oddity that premiered to a great response at Berlinale. "Cooking and performing is a hazard." IFC Midnght has unveiled the main trailer for Flux Gourmet, a wacky indie horror dark comedy about a "food collective", made by the director of Berberian Sound Studio - Peter Strickland. This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year to rather mixed reviews - you'll see why from this trailer. Set at an institute devoted to culinary + alimentary performance, an art collective finds themselves embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas and gastrointestinal disorders. It stars Asa Butterfield, Gwendoline Christie, Ariane Labed, Fatma Mohamed, Makis Papadimitriou, Leo Bill, Richard Bremmer. I appreciate the PR description for this one that calls it an "Intoxicating Gonzo Delicacy" - ha! That actually gets my attention. But the rest of this looks so dumb. Just not my cup of tea at all, it's literal artsy-fartsy cinema slop. However, if you like Strickland's films - you do not want to miss this.

“Berberian Sound Studio” and “The Duke of Burgundy” madman Peter Strickland returns with “Flux Gourmet,” another twisted ode to class horror, this time trading in giallo for gastronomy with the story of a collective of gourmands and the internal power struggles that unfold within their midst. Asa Butterfield and “Duke of Burgundy” star Gwendoline Christie lead a cast that also includes Ariane Labed, Fatma Mohamed, Makis Papadimitriou, Leo Bill, and Richard Bremmer. IndieWire exclusively shares the official trailer for the film below.

The untold story of the early life of England’s most iconic Queen has set its release date and issued the trailer and key art.
Starz will bow the drama at midnight on Sunday, June 12 on its app, all streaming and on-demand platforms, and internationally on the StarzPlay premium streaming platform across all territories.
On linear, it will debut on Starz at 9 Pm Et/Pt in the US and Canada.
Long before she ascended the throne, young Elizabeth Tudor, played by Alicia von Rittberg (Fury, “Charité,” “Genius”), was an orphaned teenager who became embroiled in the political and sexual politics of the English court.
The death of King Henry VIII sees his nine-year-old son Edward, played by Oliver Zetterström (The Midnight Gang, “The Romanoffs”) take the throne and sets into motion a dangerous scramble for power, when Elizabeth, Edward, and their sister, Mary, played by Romola Garai find themselves pawns in a game between the great families of England and the powers of Europe who vie for control of the country.
Additional key players include King Henry’s widow, Catherine Parr, played by Jessica Raine, Thomas Seymour, played by Tom Cullen, the new King’s uncle, who quickly marries the widowed Catherine, but soon takes an interest in the teenage Elizabeth and Duke of Somerset, played by John Heffernan (“The Pursuit of Love,” “The Crown”), who loses no time in claiming the position of Lord Protector for himself when the old King dies.
The upcoming drama series also stars Jamie Blackley, Alexandra Gilbreath (Tulip Fever, RSC’s “Provoked Wife”), Jamie Parker (1917, “Harry Potter and The Cursed Child”), Leo Bill (Rare Beasts, In Fabric), Oliver Zetterström (The Midnight Gang, “The Romanoffs”), Bella Ramsey (“Game of Thrones,” “The Last of Us”), Ekow Quartey (“This Way Up,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Shakespeare’s Globe), Alex Macqueen (“Sally4Ever,” “Peaky Blinders”) and Olivier Huband (“I Hate Suzie,” “A Discovery of Witches”).
Becoming Elizabeth is created and written by playwright and television screenwriter Anya Reiss who also serves as executive producer with The Forge’s George Ormond and George Faber with Lisa Osborne producing.

Say what you will about British horror director Peter Strickland, but his films are anything but dull. He broke out with 2005’s “Berberian Sound Studio,” a twisted tribute to 1970s Italian horror that established him as one of the genre’s most unique voices. Recent films “The Duke of Burgundy” and “In Fabric” continued to show off his distinctive visual style and unapologetic embrace of weirdness. His fans have nothing to worry about with latest film “Flux Gourmet,” which debuts at the Berlin Film Festival this week and appears to be firmly within his wheelhouse.
As “Berberian Sound Studio” focused on people who make horror movies, “Flux Gourmet” follows a collective of gourmands and the internal power struggles that unfold within the organization. Asa Butterfield and Gwendoline Christie lead the cast, which also features Ariane Labed, Fatma Mohamed, Makis Papadimitriou, Leo Bill, and Richard Bremmer.

"Silence from an audience was always my fear. And anything I could do to break that silence became more important than anything else." IFC Films has revealed the first teaser trailer for a wacky film titled Flux Gourmet, a sort of strange indie horror dark comedy about a "food collective", made by the director of Berberian Sound Studio. Their goal is to produce art and explore the sounds created by food. Uh, yeah. Set at an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance, a collective finds themselves embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas and gastrointestinal disorders. It stars Asa Butterfield, Gwendoline Christie, Ariane Labed, Fatma Mohamed, Makis Papadimitriou, Leo Bill, Richard Bremmer. This is premiering at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival this month before a release coming up this summer. I'm not a fan of Strickland's films, and this looks like he went overboard on the artsy-fartsy let's create art from...

Peacock has shared the first look at its new upcoming comedy series “Killing It,” streaming this April.
Created by “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” producers Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, “Killing It” stars Craig Robinson as Craig, a man who competes in a state-sponsored python hunt in his quest to achieve the American Dream. The series co-stars Stephanie Nogueras as Craig’s ex-wife Camille, Jet Miller as his pre-teen daughter Vanessa and Rell Battle as his younger brother Isaiah. Claudia O’Doherty, Scott Macarthur and Wyatt Walter round out the cast.
“We love all the ambitious, challenging, thematically-rich series that populate the current peak-tv landscape,” said Goor in a statement. “We also love jokes. So, we tried to make a show that could deliver both. We wanted ‘Killing It’ to explore America’s quasi-religious obsession with entrepreneurship and wealth, and we also wanted it to be funny. Really, really funny. Plus, we wanted it to have big snakes.

God save the queen! Starz has released a first look at its new series “Becoming Elizabeth,” with images of Alicia von Rittberg as Queen Elizabeth I and Tom Cullen as Thomas Seymour. The story kicks off after the death of Elizabeth’s father, King Henry VIII. As the daughter of Anne Boleyn, who was executed when she was a baby, Elizabeth’s claim to the throne is hotly contested. I love this line from the director notes of Rare Beasts: “When you live through nihilism/cynicism/hopelessness, your view of the world is not necessarily as it is, but rather your projection [of it].” Billie Piper’s speaking about the frank tone and dialogue of the heightened world she’s constructed as writer-director-star, but she could also be referring to the lens through which we now view our world via social media. One might say Piper has chosen the trending topic of “romantic love” and visualized the sort of doomscroll we’d find on Twitter for the topic pitting feminists versus chauvinists, progressives versus traditionalists, and the self-righteous versus the confused. It’s uncensored, honest, and crude. It’s relatable, deplorable, and hilarious. And it’s a singular vision of emotional schizophrenia.

"A post-Fleabag-era tale of dysfunctional relationships." Give it a whirl! Brainstorm Media has released the official US trailer for an indie offbeat romantic comedy called Rare Beasts, marking the feature directorial debut of talented English actress Billie Piper. This premiered in 2019 at the Venice Film Festival and is only now getting an official release in both the UK and US this summer. It's described as an "anti rom-com" film about Mandy, a career-driven single mother, who falls in love with the charming, traditionalist Pete. Billie Piper stars as Mandy, with Leo Bill as Peter, plus Kerry Fox, Toby Woolf, David Thewlis, and Lily James. This certainly does look offbeat and unique, for sure. I'm still curious to check it out - worth a look. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Billie Piper's Rare Beasts, direct from YouTube: Mandy (Billie Piper) a nihilistic young writer and mother who, while...

Warning: this War of the Worlds review contains spoilers.
Careful what you wish for. In its first season, War of the Worlds came under fire for its deliberately meditative pace. It was just too sparse for some. They found the journeys too slow and the revelations too few and far between. Season two appears to have addressed that complaint by turning up the dial. Episode one upended a barrel of plot all over viewers’ heads, and episode two has done the same, leaving us swimming in the stuff.
This week, there were name-character deaths, an armed attack, a big family reunion, a pregnancy, two break-ups, two assassination attempts and a sibling murder around which a conspiracy was formed. No sooner had one event happened than the next came along. There was no chance of getting bored, but also little time left for reflection.

A hypnotic TV commercial for a local department store beckons — summons, really — shoppers for what amounts to a culturally mandatory annual winter sales event. It’s an ad that’s not unlike the ones for Silver Shamrock in “Halloween III: Season of The Witch,” and in “In Fabric,” it succeeds in the same way, bringing in unhappy bank employee Sheila (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) to look for a first-date dress.
She finds the Ambassadorial Function Dress, color: Artery Red. It’s an alluring garment summed up in the store’s catalog with hyperbolic copy like “body sensual, captivating, candlelight glances, canapé conversations.” Not really Sheila’s size, it somehow fits her perfectly. And though she protests that she normally wouldn’t wear something so bold, the commandingly seductive saleswoman, Miss Luckmoore, doubles down: “Daring eclipses the dark circumference of caution.” There’s really no arguing with that.
Naturally, the dress is haunted.

A British filmmaker with a keen grasp of the weird and what appears to be a mission to excavate the darker, danker corners of Eurosploitation cinema, he makes movies that function as both homages and fever dreams. His breakthrough, Berberian Sound Studio (2012), couches its tale of a sound engineer losing his mind in the world of ’70s giallo slasher-sleaze; its follow-up, The Duke of Burgundy (2014), is a same-sex S&m love story that replicates a vintage arthouse/grindhouse sordidness so well you’d think it was a lost Jess Franco flick.
