Conceived during the pandemic, the latest from Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead is a transcendent head-scratcher about two slackers’ search for hidden meanings and paranormal signs
Between the likes of Host, Bo Burnham’s Inside and Jacob Estes’s He’s Watching, there’s a respectable pandemic oeuvre emerging – and Something in the Dirt is one of the best yet. This sci-fi-dusted paean to Los Angeles slackerdom is fairly typical for the lockdown genre: a torrent of self-involved invention about not much more than the process of its own creation. But director-stars Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead approach their two-hander with a sly humour and wonderment that prevents it from disappearing up its own fundament.
The film could also be plausibly filed in the LA esoterica category, alongside Mulholland Drive and Under the Silver Lake. Drifter John (Moorhead) moves into the same apartment complex as long-time denizen Levi (Benson), where they witness a strange,...

Jacob Estes directs his offspring in this experimental lockdown tale about a brother and sister trying to exorcise a prowler from their home
Marketing this film as a Blumhouse-style found-footage horror does this genuinely interesting and experimental lockdown effort a bit of a disservice. Conceived during Covid times by Jacob Estes (responsible for the excellent 2004 teen drama Mean Creek) and his children Iris and Lucas, the horror elements are more sweetly vindictive than scary. The film is best described as a kind of pseudo-stalker-flick-cum-Freudian-video-diary-cum-dressing-up-box-raid, with Blair Witch and Lynchian overtones, and a meta fascination in the film-making eye, couched in the shut-in mania of 2020. Just run with it.
Iris (Iris Serena Estes) and Lucas (Lucas Steel Estes) find themselves home alone during a mysterious pandemic that affects adults; they are only in technological contact with their hospitalised parents. Being the children of a film-maker and a musician, a pandemic of...

The setup -- two kids left alone in a house -- might remind you of a certain popular movie from the 1980s, but He's Watching very quickly establishes a distinctly unsettling mood. Jacob Aaron Estes directed from his own original screenplay; Estes is a filmmaker who knows his way around a deceptively calm setup that leads to unexpected trouble. We're happy to showcase the first of five alternate posters for the film here. Click the image in the gallery below to enjoy in greater splendor. The official synopsis helps to explain why both the alternate poster -- "Kids Screaming" by Jay Martin -- as well as the official image below look so foreboding: "When happy-go-lucky siblings Iris and...

Sitting down with a cup of coffee and clicking onto Rakuten TV to watch Don’t Let Go was nice and simple. A quick search for the film, a few clicks of the mouse and I was ready to go. The interface is slick and finding what you want is easy, but I also like the lists that are available to scroll through, similar to streaming services such as Netflix, which allow you to have a look through popular films, new releases or specific genre-based titles. It’s a service I’m new to, but one I had a nice time exploring, and the HD quality is delightful too. Oh, yeah… onto the film itself.

Two-time Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo solidified himself as an industry powerhouse after turning in a jaw-dropping performance as the revered Martin Luther King, Jr. in Ava DuVernay‘s masterpiece “Selma.” His portrayal introduced the world to his breadth of roles, which includes over two decades of complex character work, often excelling in the grey area of his characters’ moral ambiguity.
Oyelowo’s latest film is “Don’t Let Go,” the Blumhouse-produced, Jacob Estes (“Mean Creek“)-written-and-directed sci-fi thriller.

"Believe it or not, I'm sitting right here. Two weeks in the future." Otl Releasing & Blumhouse released the first official trailer for an indie thriller called Don't Let Go, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. This has a cool concept - after a man's family dies in what appears to be a murder, he gets a phone call from one of the dead, his niece. He's not sure if she's a ghost or if he's going mad, but as it turns out, he's not. He can reach her by phone two weeks in the past, and tries to solve the murder before it really happens. This got some mixed reviews out of Sundance, but looks solid. David Oyelowo stars with Storm Reid, Mykelti Williamson, Byron Mann, and Shinelle Azoroh. Looks like it might be a good thriller. “Believe it or not, I’m sitting right here, two weeks in the future,” Oyelowo says. “But as long as you’re alive, you can change things.”

“We all, at one time or another, are going to experience some kind of death that rocks us to our core … and there’s no escaping that,” writer and director Jacob Estes told TheWrap during this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Estes’ new film, “Relive,” which premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, is a story of such loss. The film stars David Oyelowo as Los Angeles detective Jack Radcliff, who fields a distressed phone call from his niece Ashley (Storm Reid) and rushes to the rescue–only to find the girl and her parents dead in an apparent murder-suicide.
The film then takes on the air of a supernatural thriller as gets another call from Ashley after her death — from three days prior. With the cell-phone connection acting as a link between the past and the present, Jack urges Ashley to collect clues that will help him to solve her murder and change her fate.

Big stars – and lots of those not-so-famous actors hoping to ride the Sundance Film Festival train to that same spot in the Hollywood firmament – descended on Park City for Sundance 2019 as the fest’s first weekend unfolded from January 24 to 27. Happily, the weather cooperated (cold but clear) and there were parties, premieres, brunches, dinners and dances all day and all night. The most popular game became a contest: how many gatherings could you hit in one day? And how many outfit changes could you pull off? Awkwafina and Naomi Watts played that one like bosses.
Sundance 2019 is all about diversity and inclusiveness, as women are making bold moves on both sides of the camera and the stories being told encompass the rainbow of human experiences. And there was even a bona fide second line, straight from the heart of New Orleans onto snowy Main Street. It’s been a time to celebrate change,...

When writer-director Jacob Estes originally wrote his new Sundance drama “Relive,” the script centered on a white family living on a farm in Ohio. But after acclaimed actor David Oyelowo agreed to join the project, he happily got to work rewriting.
“Relive,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, follows an Lapd detective who has a close bond with his niece, Ashley (“Wrinkle in Time” star Storm Reid). When tragedy strikes, their bond continues through phone calls that transcend time. Together, they solve a mystery and try to save each other’s lives.
As Estes told TheWrap in a Q&A at the WanderLuxxe Fimmaker Lounge on Sunday, he had practical reasons for originally setting key scenes in “Relive” on a farm in Ohio: a series of gunshots early in the film had to take place somewhere no one would hear them.

“Relive,” Blumhouse’s latest sci-fi thriller, has all the makings of being a good film: a great cast, good performances, and an interesting premise. But unfortunately, it’s full of genre clichés that end up miring the film in predictability.
Detective Jack Radcliffe (David Oyelowo) is a good cop and a good uncle to his niece, Ashley. His brother (and Ashley’s dad) Garret (Brian Tyree Henry) has had a shady past and is now trying to do better for his family. But something goes wrong and Garret, Ashley and her mother end up being killed in a set-up made to look like a murder-suicide.
As Jack, consumed by grief, starts to question what may have happened, he starts receiving phone calls from his dead niece. The calls aren’t coming from beyond but from alternate timelines — she exists in the past before the date of the murders, and he’s in the present,...

Not only does their Midnight slate look insanely great, but there are a ton of films running in Sundance’s other programming tracks that I am beyond excited to see in January.

Jacob Estes could be making it a Sundance trifecta with Mean Creek (2004) and The Details (2011) being joined Only You – a horror, sci-fi, thriller that is without details in terms of plot or release dates. Starring Storm Reid, Mykelti Williamson and David Oyelowo, production took place in July of 2017 with Jason Blum backing the project. Knowing the Blumhouse – they’ll want to let this cat out of the bag with a bang, and a Sundance preem a la Get Out would do the trick.

Exclusive: Imagine Entertainment chairmen Brian Grazer and Ron Howard have started an innovative offshoot program to supplement the films they make. In an effort to streamline the movie development process, they’ve thinned the ranks of creative executives and will instead empower entrepreneurial producers who ordinarily take their marching orders from those gatekeeper execs.
Imagine has begun a “Pod” system of producer deals that will start with Now You See Me producer Bobby Cohen, and Julie Oh, who in 2016 joined Imagine as New York-based vice presidents of development and will now be a producer there. Imagine’s core movie business will continue to be steered for Grazer and Howard by Karen Lunder, who in August was named Evp and empowered to oversee the projects that Grazer and Howard produce, and Howard directs.
Cohen, Oh, and several others who are in negotiations to join will come under the Imagine umbrella in producer deals.

We suppose that Jacob Estes took one off the chin when the Weinsteins muddled the release of his sophomore picture, the Sundance preemed The Details and it potentially took the helmer out of circulation (see our Missing in Action series), but enter a new original screenplay and the backing of mint making producer Jason Blum into the equation and we have a third film signed by Estes too look forward to.

Kevin Phillips’ feature directorial debut is a knock-out. There’s no other way to put it, really. Comparison is being made by many to Stand By Me, but I think it’s closer to Jacob Estes’ 2004 thriller Mean Creek. To talk about either film, the same spoiler is unavoidable: a bully dies, accidentally, and the rest of the film is how the characters deal with it. Where the two films depart is that fallout and the tone therein. Mean Creek handles how the guilt can consume you, and while Super Dark Times absolutely deals with that, the manifestation of it is drastically different. It’s strange, occasionally comedic, and always intriguing.

So far, 2017 has not been kind to long-delayed horror releases. Remember The Bye Bye Man? What a dreadful way to kickstart another year of screams. Surely no other genre equivalent could dethrone such a paltry paranormal effort, right? You’d have to be a tone-deaf, spookless, convoluted bore to challenge the dumpster-fire we call The Bye Bye Man.

I wasn’t prepared for just How misguided a sequel Rings would end up being. “Maybe the four different rescheduled premiere dates were strategic,” I thought, “and not telling of Paramount’s inability to salvage Samara’s name.” What a blissfully ignorant life I led right before that famous VHS static kicked in, and my basement-level expectations were shattered by horrendous franchise misdealings.
Gutiérrez opens with a midair disaster à la Final Destination, brought on by some random “bro” who stinks of distress. “It helps to talk,...

The cursed videotape returns in the belated horror sequel, Rings. Here's our review of a bewitchingly terrible film...
Jean-Luc Godard once said something to the effect that a story needs a beginning, middle and an end, but not necessarily in that order. Rings doesn't really have much of a story, but it does have three beginnings, so it must be really, really good. Right?

It's nearly 20 years since Sadako first started menacing screens of varying sizes in the original Ring, Hideo Nakata's collision of traditional Japanese ghost tale and modern urban culture. Samara will be back to kill more people in her latest sequel Rings. We have a new poster featuring the character giving everything she's got to look as terrifying as possible. The thing is... we've seen it all before. People watch her amateur film school art project, and it's so bad that seven days later they die.
Don't get me wrong, I love this horror franchise, and the first film was freakin' great! I just don't think this new sequel is going to give us anything different from what we've already seen, except this one will use technology beyond VHS tapes.
Oh yeah! There's also going to be a new trailer coming this week!
A new chapter in the beloved Ring horror franchise. A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it.

The Ring released in 2002, followed by The Ring 2 in 2005. It has been ten years since a sequel has been released for this series. Now, director F. Javier Gutierrez and Paramount Pictures have debuted a trailer for Rings. Scheduled for an October launch, Rings brings back a curse. Anyone who watches a devilish tape - will die in seven days. The first trailer for the film is here. The synopsis begins and ends with Julia (Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz). She investigates a dark underworld, after her boyfriend watches a mysterious tape. She sacrifices herself to save him. But, this latest tape is something more: a "movie within a movie." The first trailer for Rings is a good one. It shows Samara (Bonnie Morgan) emerging from a flatscreen. Meanwhile, Julia is struggling with the curse as a coil of hair emerges from her mouth. There are all sorts of dark nasties in this preview clip.
