Exclusive: Viacom veteran Paula Kaplan is leaving Nickelodeon, where she most recently served as EVP of Nickelodeon Talent, I have learned.
I hear this was a personal decision Kaplan made, and she just informed her colleagues of her pending departure. It comes after Kaplan’s team helped mount the 2021 Kids’ Choice Awards ceremony this past weekend, which featured top talent. A new leadership for Nickelodeon’s department is expected to be announced shortly.
“Very few people get to work at an amazing company, much less get to work for the same company twice,” Kaplan said in the internal note, a copy of which was obtained by Deadline. “I have been incredibly fortunate to spend 25 years working with remarkable people, but I have decided now is the time for me to explore other creative opportunities. This year has revolutionized our industry and I am excited about all the possibilities that are unfolding.

Nickelodeon, Disney and Sesame Workshop, three of the nation’s best known makers of kids’ entertainment, are going to start tackling more dramatic stuff.
The ViacomCBS kids’ network will tonight at 7 p.m. eastern present “#KidsTogether: The Nickelodeon Town Hall,” an hour-long special that aims to help kids gain more understanding about changes wrought in their lives by the spread of coronavirus. Disney Channel, meanwhile, on Friday unveiled a series of messages from many of the actors who populate its programs that show up in breaks between shows. And Sesame Workshop this week will distribute videos that talk about how to sneeze properly and providing comfort, among other topics. One highlight: a “Washy Wash” song from Elmo.
Getting the tone right is crucial. “We want to strike a balance between being informative and not frightening kids,” says Paula Kaplan, executive vice president of talent for Nickelodeon, in an interview.

In a consolidation move, Viacom veteran Paula Kaplan will expand her current role as Evp, Talent and Development, Viacom Digital Studios, to also oversee talent for Nickelodeon. Named Evp, Talent and Development, Viacom Digital Studios; and Talent, Nickelodeon, Kaplan will dually report to Brian Robbins, President of Nickelodeon; and Kelly Day, President of Viacom Digital Studios.
On the Nickelodeon side, Kaplan will be replacing Shelly Sumpter Gillyard who exited as Evp, Talent, Music and Events.

Updated: Viacom is making significant cuts at Awesomeness, disclosing plans to lay off nearly 100 employees — or around half of the digital-media company it acquired last month from NBCUniversal, Verizon and Hearst.
In addition, as Viacom previously announced would happen, former Awesomeness CEO Jordan Levin has left the company.
While sources previously indicated Awesomeness was laying off more than 30 staffers this week, the cutbacks are much deeper than that. According to a notice filed with California’s Employment Development Department, Awesomeness will terminate 50 employees on Oct. 15; 33 who will be let go shortly after Oct. 15; and 15 who will lose their employment on Dec. 31.
Santa Monica-based Awesomeness filed the notice Aug. 16 with the agency under the requirements of the state’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (Warn) Act, which requires at least 60-day advance notice of mass layoffs. Awesomeness’ filing of the Warn notice was previously reported by Deadline.

It’s official: Viacom closed a deal to acquire AwesomenessTV, a youth-oriented digital media company, as Viacom looks to expand its reach among digital-first audiences sandwiched in between its Nickelodeon and MTV brands.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, a source said Viacom is paying well below $300 million for the digital-media company. The final price tag is considerably less than AwesomenessTV’s $650 million valuation after the company’s latest investment in 2016.
Word that Viacom was in advanced talks with the company — majority owned by Comcast/NBCUniversal, with stakes held by Verizon and Hearst — emerged earlier this week.
Awesomeness will be integrated into Viacom’s portfolio of brands and live within the Viacom Digital Studios division headed by president Kelly Day (pictured above), formerly chief business officer of Awesomeness.
According to Viacom, current AwesomenessTV CEO Jordan Levin, who has been with the company since May of 2017, will be leaving following a transition period post-acquisition.

This is Black’s third time hosting the 90-minute event that’ll air live from Los Angeles and feature appearances by Will Ferrell and Justin Bieber.
“Anyone can host something once,” Black tells EW. “But if they ask you back a second time, that means they liked the way you did it. And if you host a third time, that means the first time wasn’t a fluke, and it...

Jack Black clearly takes no issue with getting slimed. The comedic actor will endure the green mystery substance once again as he is set to take on hosting duties for Nickelodeon's 24th annual Kids' Choice Awards for the third time. He helped hand out the coveted blimps in both 2006 and 2008.
"Jack Black is the perfect mix of comedy, rock and star-power that will set the tone for an amazing show," Kids' Choice Executive Producer Marjorie Cohn said. "Jack is always an exciting host because of his unpredictability, incredible comedic timing and ability to connect with our audience. We're really excited to have him back."

When Miley Cyrus wanted to shift away from the tween roles that have defined her career, Tish Cyrus, her mother and co-manager, started at the top. Rather than look for a pre-existing script, she contacted bestselling author Nicholas Sparks ("The Notebook") and asked him to write something specifically for her daughter. "Sparks is an amazing, faith-based writer and a Christian and he writes about relationships with a family and there is nothing about sex or things I felt were wrong for her," she explains. Cyrus, 16, met with the writer to flesh out her character; she disclosed elements from her own life—like her love for animals—that Sparks incorporated in his work, which started as a screenplay and only later became "The Last Song," a best-selling novel. The movie version, with Cyrus, opens in April."This film is like taking that first baby step away from 'Hannah Montana,' " Tish Cyrus notes.

Nickelodeon has tapped Lily Collins, daughter of singer Phil Collins, to help keep its viewers informed on the latest trends and news in entertainment and pop culture.
The 18-year-old, who is studying broadcast journalism at USC, is set to appear in interstitial programming spots airing throughout the day and night on Nickelodeon, reporting from the sets of Nick series, movie premieres, awards shows, concerts and other celebrity events. She also will host daily 30-second updates centered on current music, movie, fashion and celebrity news and join current host J Boogie to contribute reports to the weekend TEENick block.
This marks the first time that Nickelodeon has inked a deal for a roving entertainment correspondent.
"Lily is a natural in front of the camera," Nickelodeon executive vp talent Paula Kaplan said. "She can think on her feet and is comfortable interviewing a wide range of people. As a rising young star herself, she's totally plugged into the latest entertainment and pop culture trends."
Dad also recently went into business with Nickelodeon: Phil Collins is set to make a cameo this year on live-action series "The Naked Brothers Band".
Lily Collins -- also an actor, singer and model -- might already be familiar to Nickelodeon's audience: Last year, she served as guest correspondent on the network's "Slime Across America" tour.

Emma Roberts has been cast in the lead of a new comedy pilot under consideration at Nickelodeon. The 12-year-old niece of Julia Roberts and daughter of Eric Roberts will play the preteen protagonist of Unfabulous, which chronicles the life of a musically inclined junior high school student. Created by Sue Rose (Pepper Ann), Unfabulous began production last week in Los Angeles. Unfabulous is Emma Roberts' first TV role; she has appeared in films including Blow and Spymate and is attached to star in the upcoming film Daisy Winters. After a meeting with Emma Roberts this year, Nickelodeon was determined to work with her. "We had a great meeting and came away very impressed by her," Nickelodeon senior vp talent Paula Kaplan said. "When 'Unfabulous' came along, we knew we had found just the right project for her." Unfabulous chronicles the life and times of 12-year-old Ally, who periodically breaks into song to describe her feelings. Roberts will do her own singing for the part. Each episode opens with an embarrassing incident that happens to Ally. The story line then retreats backward in time to explain how she came to find herself in the opening mishap. The comical songs will be composed by Jill Sobule, a singer-songwriter whose credits include the hit "I Kissed a Girl." Emma Roberts is repped by manager David Sweeney at Sweeney Management. Her deal was brokered by Neil Meyer of Stone, Meyer & Genow.
