The Pixies have parted ways with bassist Paz Lenchantin after a decade-long run with the band. They’ll be joined by former Band of Skulls bassist Emma Richardson when they kick off a European tour on March 8 in Dublin, Ireland.
The news of Lenchantin’s exit from the group came via a curiously dry statement from the group. “We’re grateful for Paz’s many contributions,” they wrote, “and wish her all the very best going forward.”

The Dandy Warhols have joined forces with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash for the new song “I’d Like to Help You with Your Problem.”
It’s the latest single from the Dandy Warhols’ upcoming album Rockmaker, out March 15th. As if to make good that album title, the Dandy’s tapped none other than Slash himself for the self-described “Vietnam-era acid rock” song.
The churning chord progression and big hooks are right in Slash’s wheelhouse, and he adds some captivating wah-wah leads and ostensibly the solo in the middle of the song. It’s a seamless collaboration — with some uncanny axework from a living legend.
“The first time we heard it back in our studio we just stared at each other with our mouths open,” said frontman Courney Taylor-Taylor. “What he played on the track is amazing. I’ve never heard him play quite like that, but what...

The Dandy Warhols have unveiled a new single called “Danzig With Myself,” featuring a guest spot by Pixies frontman Black Francis. The song appears on the alt-rock band’s upcoming album, Rockmaker, out March 15th.
Musically, the song has a Pixies vibe, with Francis contributing a fuzzed-out guitar track. Of the song’s title, Dandy Warhol singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor explained, “It started with a riff that either sounded like Misfits or Danzig and then got slowed down.”
He continued, “Over time, it became the working title that was just too good to replace.”
Taylor-Taylor delivers the verses in a deep sing-talk vocal, although not quite as deep as Glenn Danzig, and the dark lyrics serve as another tribute of sorts to the horror-punk icon. The tune starts out with the lines, “Some days it’s just so obvious/ Some days insidious/ But half the people alive today are/ Are fucking idiots.

The Breeders have spent the past three decades crashing on the last splash. The ’90s alt-rock legends are celebrating the occasion with Last Splash (30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition), plus 2023 tour dates where they’ll play the 1993 record in its entirety. You can preview the reissue now with a newly-unearthed track from the era called “Go Man Go,” co-written with Pixies vocalist Black Francis.
Then composed of twin sisters Kim and Kelley Deal along with Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson, The Breeders rose to international fame with Last Splash, their sophomore album. Along with a double-lp of the original tracklist — including classics like “Cannonball” and “Drivin’ on 9” — comes a one-sided etched 12” disc containing “Go Man Go,” as well as a version of “Divine Hammer” with Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis on lead vocals, appropriately titled “Divine Mascis.” The remaster was cut at half speed at Abbey Road Studios by Miles Showell,...

End Of The Road is a festival that keeps its promises. The cultured leftfield shindig – where croquet tournaments break out in forest glades and peacocks roam the trimmed lawns of Dorset’s Larmer Tree Gardens, unbothered by the experimental folk, rock, rap and electronic tomfoolery floating across the site – has been promising a weekend headlined by indie giants Pixies and Bright Eyes since 2020. Covid scuppered that event, and post-pandemic travel issues forced the 2021 bill to become more UK-based. But this year, Eotr puts its music where its mouth is at last, with plenty more curveballs thrown in to keep this crowd of discerning alternative music fans pleasingly off-balance.
The opening Thursday night bill is a brain-rattling case in point. On the main Woods Stage, LA’s Sudan Archives sets out to invent jig-hop, interspersing psychosexual ambient raps with ruined snippets of Irish folk played on the fiddle she brandishes throughout.

Pixies add a bit of late-night psychedelia to their alt-rock bona fides on their new song, “There’s a Moon On.” The track will appear on the group’s next album, Doggerel, out Sept. 30.
“There’s a Moon On” boasts a shuffling rock groove and plenty of crunchy guitars, though there’s a uniquely eerie and uncanny bent to the tune. “Don’t like to fight don’t like to spit,” sings Black Francis, “Don’t like a steak with no pepper on it/No, I don’t like to...

Over the course of “Mr. Robot’s” run, composer Mac Quayle has done a pretty effective job creating an eerie and ethereal (etheerieal?) backdrop to one man’s psychological self-sabotage. The ongoing trials of Elliot Alderson have been underscored by electronic-heavy instrumentals, highlighting the character in moments of triumph and moments of despair (more on that later).
As good as Quayle has been, the series has also benefited from a finely curated set of musical moments, with some of the most memorable “Mr. Robot” sequences bolstered by an impeccable soundtrack selected by music supervisors Amie Bond and Charlie Haggard. Some of these have been the numerous string of classical favorites used to set up Tyrell Wellick in various stages of upper-class crises. Others have drawn on electronic music icons that have influenced the show in more ways than one.

A review of tonight's "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I email my manuscript to myself... "They won't jump out of the way." -Laurie After two episodes set largely in Jarden, "The Leftovers" returns to the Tri-State area(*), and to the most divisive of the many divisive elements of season 1, with Laurie and Tommy taking on the Guilty Remnant in "Off Ramp." (*) No, not that Tri-State area, even if Damon Lindelof wrote a "Lost"-themed "Phineas & Ferb" episode. When Laurie's potential book publisher asks her to explain exactly what the Remnant believes and why, he's acting as a stand-in for the many "Leftovers" viewers who didn't understand and/or like what all those chain-smoking ghouls in white jumpsuits were up to last season. And with Laurie finally able to speak — she speaks so much in this episode that you can feel all those words relieved to get out...

First: an admission of incompetence. The most interesting question to put to Sam Esmail, creator and showrunner of the best new series to come out of the Us this year, only came to me on my way out of the interview, while stood on the lushly carpeted staircase of the Mayfair hotel hosting the Mr Robot junket. It’s this: how does Esmail’s show square its anti-capitalist, anti-corporate themes with a Us home on an NBCUniversal channel owned by multi-billion dollar corporation, Comcast, and now a UK home on Amazon Prime? That, I would have liked to have asked.

Time once again for a bonus passage from my long "The Leftovers" interview with Damon Lindelof, this time with spoilers for both last night's episode (here's my review) and the first season of USA's "Mr. Robot," as we get into episode 2's use of a familiar piece of music, coming up just as soon as I tell you what's in the back of my truck... I know that you were a fan of "Mr. Robot," and when they did the episode where they revealed what the true nature of Mr. Robot was, they ended with an instrumental version of "Where Is My Mind?," the Pixies' song from "Fight Club." You use the actual song in episode 2. When you saw the "Mr. Robot" episode, did that give you any pause about your usage, or did you just think, "I’m doing this kind of story, and I have to do...

A review of tonight's "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I ask about your eyepatch... "Do you want to get out of here?" -Kevin "A Matter of Geography" opens with a scene that almost plays as a scathing parody of Damon Lindelof's body of work, and on the larger swath of TV dramas that lean heavily on secrets and mysteries for conflict. Remember all those times on "Lost" when you wanted to throw a shoe at the TV because two characters who had information that could mutually help each other somehow never had a real conversation about it? Well, we got everything we could have possibly wanted from the impromptu, hilariously candid family meeting, as Kevin told his daughter and girlfriend about what he did with Patti in the woods, while Nora bluntly explained, "I hire prostitutes to shoot me." These four (counting baby Lily) are a...

For most of its first season, "Mr. Robot" has been running a half-step ahead of current events, with so many public real-world hacks seeming practically like viral marketing for the USA drama. Last week, though, the intersection of art and life became truly unfortunate, when the on-camera murders of a TV reporter and cameraman in Virginia came uncomfortably close to a scene scheduled to air in that night's "Mr. Robot" season finale. Out of both sensitivity for the real victims, and perhaps a sense that no one would be able to watch that scene on that night without thinking only about Virginia, USA delayed the finale a week, finally airing it tonight. "Mr. Robot" creator Sam Esmail supported that decision. When we spoke the day after it was made, he said he had no plans to edit the scene in any way, though he did talk in a larger sense...

The 'crossover episode' is surprisingly rare in television and only happens thanks to a particular set of circumstances; usually involving shared writers-producers, and both shows airing on the same network.
Do you remember when Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel's narratives would often criss-cross? We can look forward to more of the same when The CW's Arrow is joined by The Flash - and there's also a crossover special due for Fox's Family Guy and The Simpsons.
However, the vast majority of TV shows will never have crossover episodes because the circumstances aren't right, or because it's frankly a terrible idea.
But that doesn't stop people's imaginations running riot! Below are 12 very unlikely, or outright impossible, examples of past and present TV shows that could, or should, have combined forces... maybe.

He's been called a master of hip cinematic heartbreak who deals in worlds as shiny and perfect as a Christmas ornament — or, put more charitably, a virtuoso at making pathos both wrenching and witty in a idiosyncratic, individual style. Call us crazy, but it seems like Wes Anderson has been getting a fair amount of special attention lately. In the past two months, there’s been a new book released chronicling his career in movies, there’s this short film he made with Jason Schwartzmann, his animated film “Fantastic Mr. Fox” is getting a Criterion Collection release, SNL recently did a parody of his films, and of course, his next film “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is just on the horizon (trailer here). If you are a fan of Wes Anderson, what more could you possibly want? Maybe a Wes Anderson tribute CD? Would you want that as well? No? Well, you’re gonna get it anyway… Entitled “I Saved Latin!,” the 2-cd tribute to Wes Anderson is due to come out next spring thanks to American Laundromat Records. The album features many cover songs that were prominently featured in Anderson’s first six films.

Legendary Alternative rock band Pixies formed in Boston in 1986, comprising of front man Black Francis, Joey Santiago on guitars, bass player Kim Deal, and drummer David Lovering on drums. The 4 albums they released before their breakup in 1993 have gone down in history as some of the most influential albums in Alt-Rock history.

Now they’ve got a brand new four song Ep and new videos to go along with their reformatted line-up. 'Indie Cindy' is the latest video from the rock band that helped spawn and inspire much of the early 90s alt/grunge craze. It's directed by Lamar + Nik; the Oklahoman duo has been on a tear lately, putting together an impressive catalogue that includes, in addition to another Pixies title, Lushlife’s breakout clip for 'Magnolia.' Presented in reverse order, Memento style, 'Indie Cindy' is a video about what happens when you get in over your head. Shattuck fronts Los Angeles rockers the Muffs, who have released five studio albums, including 2004's Really Really Happy. Before forming the Muffs in 1991, she played with the Pandoras, an all-female band that was part of L.A.'s so-called Paisley Underground indie scene in the Eighties.

Hot on the heels of both their first new song in forever and the departure of longtime bassist Kim Deal, The Pixies announced today that they've got a new bass player—Kim Shattuck of The Pandoras and, later, The Muffs, who were kinda great—and a bunch of new tour dates, and even some new songs. The dates are only in Europe so far (see below), but the press release says the tour will "give them the opportunity to do something they haven't been able to do in two decades: premiere brand new Pixies songs, the first collection ...

Kim Deal leaves the band, and suddenly there's a new song from the Pixies. It's curious timing sure, but you take what you can get. The band released their first new song in nearly a decade Friday (June 28).
"Bagboy" is being offered up for free download and even has a music video. Whether you'll want to download the song or watch the video is a different story. The track is fine, but doesn't seem to carry the same weight as some of the band's other work. It doesn't help that the lyrics aren't sung, but rather spoken and yelled by front man Black Francis. The music behind the vocals is where it's strongest. The band can obviously still jam, and they show it.
It's the first new song since a 2004 iTunes exclusive single, "Bam Thwok," was released. Whether or not this leads to an album, their last was in 1991, remains to be seen.

The question of whether the Pixies will carry on without original bassist Kim Deal has been answered loud and clear. Deal -- also a founding member of The Breeders -- announced her departure from the group just a few weeks ago. The remaining Pixies surprised fans early this morning by releasing a brand new song called "Bagboy," along with a colorfully destructive video. When the influential college rock band -- featuring Black Francis, Deal, David Lovering and Joey Santiago -- reunited in 2004 after a decade apart, they concentrated on touring and largely steered clear of the studio. The last original...

It is their first song in nine years, and it is called "Bagboy." A note from Black Francis: "The lyrics, coincidentally, were composed at a Starbucks Coffee in Harvard Square in Cambridge, about a hundred feet from where, 25 years ago, I composed some of the lyrics to an old Pixies song called ‘Break My Body.’" Do they have bag boys at Starbucks now? Whatever, it's a new Pixies song! Enjoy.

Kim Deal, the bassist for The Pixies, has decided to leave the band. The other three members of the alternative-rock band announced her departure on the Pixies' Facebook page Friday (June 14).
In the official message posted, there isn't too much information about why Deal left the band she joined 27 years ago. Signed by Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering, the short note reads:
"We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best."
The cordial tone indicates that Deal's departure is not the result of some big disagreement between band members. That was not the case back...

Here's the band's full statement, via the Pixies' Facebook page:

Rolling Stone notes that Deal first joined the act when she answered a 1986 ad the band had placed in the Boston Phoenix. During her early work with the group, she used the alias Mrs.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Pixies' second album, "Surfer Rosa," a seminal LP that has gone down in Rolling Stone history as one of the 500 greatest records of all time.
Every indie rock band of the past two and half decades owes a great deal to the Pixies, the Boston-bred quartet that seamlessly merged psychedelia, noise rock and alternative grunge to create one of the 1980's most memorable music projects. Formed in the collegiate environment of University of Massachusetts, the band -- comprised of Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering -- predates Nirvana as a catalyst for the immeasurable rock boom of the 1990s.
Like most indie rock bands, the Pixies were not a chart topping force, but their second album, the lyrically named "Surfer Rosa," earned accolades on its own after its 1988 release. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice dubbed the record "the Amerindie find of the year,...

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl directs this documentary celebrating the legendary California recording studio Sound City where classics such as Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and Nirvana's Nevermind - featuring Grohl on drums - were recorded. Contributors including The Pixies' Frank Black, Metallica's Lars Ulrich, producers Rick Rubin and Trent Reznor as well as old stagers such as Tom Perry and Mick Fleetwood lament its passing, a victim of cutting edge digital technology.

Out doing the rounds for the animated series Tron: Uprising (where he voices General Tesler), Lance Henriksen has made the surprising claim that a movie spin-off of his cult 1990s TV show Millennium is in the works. "I think it's going to happen; I really do," Henriksen says. "There's a big push on right now, and a lot of crazy people involved..."Millennium, should you need reminding, was Chris Carter's other series, running alongside The X-Files on Fox from 1996 to 1999. Henriksen played Black Francis Frank Black, an ex-fbi agent turned freelance forensic consultant, with the psychic ability to see inside the minds of criminals. He worked for the mysterious Millennium Group, which became more sinister as the series progressed. The often grisly series struggled with a limiting serial-killer-of-the-week formula for a while, before getting more into the politics within the Millennium Group itself, and conspiracy theories and supernatural forces...

As the Camden indie rock crowd brings out ‘next big thing’ after ‘next big thing’ and fails time after time to bring anything of any real substance, Tribes with their brand of grunge meets Britpop seem to be ‘the next big next big thing’. They’ve appeared on countless lists, had a years’ worth of festival shows, support slots, and radio appearances. They come from Camden and list Nirvana and The Pixies as influences and seem to be cool by definition. On the release of their first album ‘Baby’, the question is asked: are they any good?
After the Pixies soundalike opening track ‘Whenever’ we come across the lead single, ‘We Were Children’, which sounds like ‘Where is my Mind’ covered by Suede. Just the second track into the album and we see a pattern, Britpop meets Grunge, glam meets gore, quiet meets loud. The next two tracks,...

It happened one fateful evening in New York back in 2009. Both Metallica and Lou Reed were on hand for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts, and after crossing paths back stage, realized they wanted to make more music together. "Lulu" is the resultant album that chance encounter yielded.
Reed asked Metallica, the exalted rulers of heavy metal, to help him provide a soundtrack to his theatrical piece of the same name. Last May, the two musical forces came together to create ten eclectic songs that sound like nothing you've heard from Metallica before.
But Metallica are no strangers to collaboration. In fact, the band -- and its members -- have teamed up with some other unlikely (and other, likely) collaborations in their past. Here's a look back at five Metallica musical pairings you may not have known about.
And don't forget to check back at 10am Est Saturday on IFC.

Ralph Carney's Serious Jass Project: Seriously (Smog Veil)
One of the great things about recycling old jazz is that there are so many styles to choose from. On the evidence of this CD, saxman Ralph Carney (known as a member of Tin Huey and Oranj Symphonette as well as for his contributions to records by Tom Waits, the Black Keys, Black Francis, the B-52's, Bill Laswell, Elvis Costello, Galaxie 500, Allen Ginsberg, Marc Ribot, William Burroughs, Pere Ubu, and many more) has a great fondness for small-group swing and jump blues, but taps a few additional subgenres as well. He's even more versatile as an instrumentalist, credited on this album with six types of saxophone, two types of clarinet, and flute, trumpet, English horn, lap steel guitar, and vocals, with a moderate amount of overdubbing at times.
Of course, when Carney includes "serious" in the band and album names,...

From an illicit Pixies gig to a Mesopotamian ziggurat, Guardian critics recall their biggest moment of inspiration in their respective fields
How to enter this year's competition
Pop: Alexis Petridis
Can any gig you see as a critic ever match the ones you saw as a teenager? Bizarrely, going to a gig when I was 17 was harder work than writing reviews has ever been. It involved not merely getting to London, but lying to my parents about where I was going, lying to my friend's parents about where my parents thought I was going, bunking off school, and then convincing somebody who looked 18 to go to the bar on my behalf.
But none of that mattered the night I saw the Pixies supported by My Bloody Valentine, in September 1988. It's not every night you see arguably the two most important guitar bands of the era on the same stage at...

Entice is the third book in a series about Pixies. If you haven’t read the first two books and think that you would like to, you may want to skip this review and read Need and Captivate first. There’s no way to review this book without giving away crucial plot twists from the last two books.
I will be honest: I enjoyed Entice. Despite a few issues that I had with it, I would be lying if I said that I didn’t devour it. The premise of this book picks up where the other two left off. Nick is dead, taken to Valhalla by the warrior Freya to fight in the last battle for Odin. Zara has been pixie kissed, becoming queen to the pixie king, Astley, who has promised to help her travel to Valhalla to get Nick back. Zara is led on numerous false leads...

Tuesday night at the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Castro Theatre hosted one of the more inspired events of the festival. Every year, the San Francisco Film Society puts on an event pairing a musical act with a silent film. The past few years have seen Stephen Merritt (The Magnetic Fields) providing live music for the 1916 version of “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” Dengue Fever accompanying the stop-motion feature-length film “The Lost World,” and Black Francis (The Pixies) lending his songs to “The Golem.” This time around, the festival decided to change the rules slightly and invited Tindersticks…...

Grouplove are among the more affable bands to land in recent memory. Drawn together by a series of events that frankly sounds too weird to be fabricated, the five-piece coalesces beneath punchy vocals, tight harmonies, and youthful abandon. They are an “La band” but their story begins beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. The tale is best told by the band itself:
“Maybe it starts the night Hannah (Hooper) met Christian (Zucconi) at one of his acoustic shows in New York in the summer of 2008. Their connection was instantaneous and they ended up listening to tapes under the Brooklyn Bridge until the wee hours of the morning. Hannah had just been invited to an artist’s residency in the small village of Avdou, Crete and was set to leave in a week. She was worried that if she left she would never have contact with Christian again, so she invited him…and he said yes.
