Paul Schrader absentmindedly builds installation art out of seven prescription bottles, two inhalers and an empty martini glass, as we sit in a restaurant for seniors in a Manhattan high-rise. Outside, lights twinkle on the Hudson. In 1975, Schrader went to bed with a pistol under his pillow while writing “Taxi Driver.” “Having the option to end things is the only way I could sleep,” Schrader says.
The specter of death is less dramatic but still remains a central focus for the 77-year-old Schrader. Not coincidentally, it’s the subject of his new film, “Oh, Canada,” starring Richard Gere, Jacob Elordi and Uma Thurman. Schrader’s breathing is now shallow and raspy. The voice he once used to argue with Marty Scorsese, direct Willem Dafoe and seduce Nastassja Kinski is now a broken-glass growl. He raises it the best he can to get another drink.

The upcoming Marvel film Captain America: Brave New World has had a rather rocky development, with rumors of poor test screenings, reshoots, and even delays leading to some wondering when the film will actually be released.
So little is known about the film, and the only hint at any story is its multiple subtitles, with the first being “New World Order” but being changed to “Brave New World” due to political concerns. This will also be the first Captain America film without Chris Evans as Falcon (Played by: Anthony Mackie) has taken up the mantel (as seen in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier).
But we may now know of a character that will be appearing in the film, one that will serve as the potential main villain of the story. That being Red Hulk. Red Hulk is the alter ego of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross after he, too, was mutated like Bruce Banner,...

From Saving Private Ryan, through There's Something About Mary and onto A Bug's Life, 1998 saw critically acclaimed films in a variety of genres. The highest grossing film of the year was the Bruce Willis sci-fi disaster movie Armageddon, which grossed $553.7 million.

This Kiefer Sutherland film has a critics' score of 76% and an audience score of 85%. However, it only grossed $27.2 million against a production budget of $27 million and has been largely forgotten.

‘Blackout’ Review – Larry Fessenden’s Werewolf Tale Offers a Slice-of-Life Movie With a Horror Twist
In 2019, indie horror filmmaker Larry Fessenden reimagined Frankenstein with a contemporary lens in Depraved. His follow-up, Blackout, takes his exploration of classic movie monsters further with a unique take on the Wolf Man. Alcoholism and lycanthropy afflict an artist in Blackout, the title’s dual meaning apparent, but Fessenden takes it a step further by exploring the volatile nature of a community and the catastrophic yet absurdly funny toll a monster’s destruction wreaks on a small town.
Talbot Falls artist Charley (Alex Hurt) is at a significant crossroads. His binge drinking has made a mess of his life and relationships, including former love Sharon (Addison Timlin) and her ruthlessly power-crazed dad Hammond (Marshall Bell). His drinking has left him prone to blackouts, complicating matters when he begins to suspect he may be the werewolf savagely ripping people apart during the Full Moon. Over the years there have been several entries into the sci-fi genre touching upon the concept of extra-terrestrial life. Yet Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic, Alien remains one of the best movies ever made in the genre. A movie that puts the audience on the edge of their seats from start to end, it is a masterclass in suspense, tension, and terror.

Marvel Studios has been quiet for a little while, but Kevin Feige and company made a splash at CinemaCon 2024 by showing off several minutes of footage from one of their next big movies.
One of the most astonishing things about the 15-year-long cultural phenomenon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that they managed to get a mass audience to care about limp characters like Thor and Captain America. As a comics reader in the 1990s, I recall that those who read Thor and Captain America books were snickered at; the X-Men, Batman, Spider-Man, and the then-rising Image Comics characters were considered way cooler. Thanks to the MCU, however, Captain America (previously played by Chris Evans) was now hip, and his movie "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is often vaunted -- rather debatably -- as one of the best films in the long-running series.

Review: Larry Fessenden has over 100 acting credits to his name, and if you’ve been following the horror genre over the last few decades there’s a good chance you’ve seen him show up in something, whether it be a Ti West movie, Stake Land, Late Phases, You’re Next, or the movie I first noticed him in, Session 9. He’s also a prolific producer, and has directing credits stretching back to the 1980s – most of those credits being on horror movies. The Incredible Hulk remains the black sheep of the Marvel Cinematic Universe despite being one of the earliest installments in the multi-billion dollar franchise. The film marks Edward Norton’s only appearance as Bruce Banner / Hulk from the Marvel Studios. However, the film also introduced the late William Hurt’s Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross who became a major supporting player in the MCU.
William Hurt as General Ross in Captain America: Civil War.
During an interview, the film’s director Louis Leterrier spoke about the tumultuous production process, which was only hampered by his constant arguments with Hurt. Leterrier revealed that he once had to resort to slight violence to assert his dominance over Hurt. Here is what Leterrier revealed about not getting along with Hurt on The Incredible Hulk.

Louis Leterrier's "The Incredible Hulk" was released in August of 2008, a year before Disney made their notorious $4 billion purchase of Marvel Entertainment. Once the Disney purchase was finalized, the company announced its plan to build out the then-new Marvel Cinematic Universe, which was novel at the time. Disney also retconned Paramount's "Iron Man," and Leterrier's movie (made for Universal) into the MCU, using a foundation that had already been built. The announcement of a whole string of interconnected superhero movies set the pop world on fire, and the ensuing decade would be crushed -- both positively and negatively -- by Marvel.
"The Incredible Hulk" was sort of the red-headed stepchild of those early films. It starred Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, and Norton, as with any of his films, attempted to assert creative control over the project. The tone of "Incredible" is steelier and more machine-like than the...

The production of the next Captain America film, Captain America: Brave New World, is in full swing and fans just can’t wait for the film. As the film is quite crucial for the franchise, many theories regarding the film have been circulating on social media, particularly about Red Hulk. Several social media outlets have also covered interesting rumors about the film’s storyline.
Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
One of these rumors claims that the Red Hulk can emit fire from his body which is hot enough to melt Vibranium. This has left the fans wild as this ability is new and it may completely change the MCU. Throughout the MCU, we got glimpses of Thaddeus Ross, portrayed by late actor William Hurt. And now finally, the character might take center stage in this movie as Harrison Ford replaced hurt last year.

William Hurt died on March 13, 2022, at age 71, just a week short of his 72nd birthday. The Oscar-winning actor starred in a variety of movies over the last four decades, but how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1950, Hurt made his movie debut with a starring role in Ken Russell‘s psychedelic thriller “Altered States” (1980), quickly followed by Lawrence Kasdan‘s classic neo-noir “Body Heat” (1981). He won the Oscar as Best Actor just four years later for Hector Babenco‘s “Kiss of the Spider Woman” (1985), playing a transgender inmate at a South American prison who forms a bond with his cellmate (Raul Julia), a political prisoner. The role brought him additional prizes at BAFTA and the Cannes Film Festival.

We look at famous actors as role models, tending to see their personal lives as soap opera, as projection, as aspiration. But the story of Christopher Reeve is different. His life became a parable. It began with the fact that he was Superman — and I don’t just mean that he played Superman. For millions, he fused with that role in a special way. After nearly five decades of comic-book movies, Reeve’s Man of Steel — the chiseled handsome-hawk profile, the fleet muscularity, the helmet of black hair with its forehead curl just so, the true-blue nobility of his eyes — made him the only actor I’ve ever seen play a superhero who truly seemed like a pop god who’d just stepped out of the comic books. He was so perfect that he could have been drawn by Roy Lichtenstein.

One of the more appealing details of Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi film "Alien" is that it looks weirdly down-to-earth. It takes place centuries in the future and is set mostly on board a massive spacecraft, but the characters all wear common white t-shirts and cotton undergarments and speak like ordinary working-class miners. This is not the stuffy, formal world of "Star Trek." This is a future world of grunts, laborers, and normies. "Alien" is one of the few sci-fi movies that feels legitimately lived in.
But, since it was still a space-bound sci-fi adventure film, space suits were still going to be necessary. The crew of the Nostromo occasionally left their craft and explored planets that have unbreathable atmospheres, requiring them to suit up like ordinary 20th-century Earth astronauts. The film's space suits were designed by John Mollo, and they rested on an aesthetic matrix that included the drawings of...

It's easy to take for granted the weirdness and shocking nature of the extraterrestrial's lifecycle in Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 horror film "Alien."
In "Alien," John Hurt plays Kane, a crew member of the futuristic space tug Nostromo who finds an outsize, leathery egg while exploring a mysterious alien vessel. The egg opens, and a strange monster -- part lobster, part bladder -- leaps out and grabs his face. He immediately goes comatose. Later, it is discovered that the monster, while still attached to his face, has inserted an unsettling biological tube down his throat. Kane's crewmates are unable to remove the monster from his face; when they pull on it, it begins to strangle Kane with its tail, and when they cut it, it bleeds acid that can eat through metal.

“The Incredible Hulk” director Louis Leterrier was the first guest on the new “Happy Sad Confused” spinoff series “Watchalong” and he got frank while discussing his 2008 comic book movie. The film, which starred Edward Norton as Bruce Banner and the Hulk, was the second movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but its critical and commercial reception nosedived compared to “Iron Man,” which opened a month before. “The Incredible Hulk” only grossed $264 million worldwide, a sharp decline from “Iron Man’s” $585 million.
It’s well known by now that Marvel scrapped all the follow-up plans it had for Norton continuing as Hulk. He was later replaced by Mark Ruffalo. Norton clashed with Marvel during the making of the film, with Leterrier saying that the movie’s tone was perhaps the biggest point of contention.
“The whole way, everybody was in lock step. It just got tense at the end,” the director remembered.

Actor Johnny Depp made his mark in Hollywood when he was cast as Edward Scissorhands in the titular role, however, he wasn’t the only actor considered for the part.
Despite being filmmaker Tim Burton’s muse for many years, the role of Edward could have gone to some pretty surprising actors. Who were some of the actors who could have been cast in the role?
Edward Scissorhands could have gone to these A-listers
Possibly tough to imagine, but actors like Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, Tom Hanks, and even William Hurt were in the running for the part.
Hanks couldn’t move forward because he opted to instead star in the film Bonfire of the Vanities. Meanwhile, Cruise’s name was also floated for the role. He was filming Days of Thunder and Burton wanted someone with more of an indie appeal.

Before author J.K. Rowling — on whose book series the films are based — said some awful, unforgivable, transphobic things, the "Harry Potter" franchise hooked audiences around the world. As someone who used to stand outside bookstores for the midnight launches of "Harry Potter" books, I can tell you that I was totally hooked.
For those who weren't into the books, the craze must have seemed bananas. People wandering around Universal Studios Hollywood's Wizarding World in the hot California summers, dressed in polyester wizard robes, waving their wands at walls ... well, we all looked nuts. If you didn't love the series the way fans did, the budget alone for these films would make a person cringe.
British actor Sir John Hurt, who played wand shop owner Garrick Ollivander, had some rather disparaging things to say about how much money was spent on these films, though put in context, it makes sense.

On Friday, a Manhattan man who tried to kick in the door of CNN host Anderson Cooper’s home was sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Gerald Hurt, 52, was found to have visited Cooper’s Manhattan doorstep at least four times between August and December 2022.
Cooper has a restraining order on Hurt, which was ignored. He was eventually charged with eight counts of misdemeanor stalking, menacing and trespassing, and criminal contempt for violating the restraining order.
Hurt now has a five-year restraining order against Cooper.
The problems began on Aug. 21, 2022, when Hurt came to Anderson’s converted firehouse home in the West Village. He claimed that he had a package for Cooper.
He was told to leave the package by the woman who answered the door and Hurt was repeatedly asked to leave.

It ain’t easy being green in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with it being no secret that Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk is the black sheep of the Avengers family. Premiering in 2008 as the second MCU outing, it’s the only Phase One movie not to get a sequel.
We’ve come a long way from the early days of the Green Meanie, most notably as The Incredible Hulk was Edward Norton’s only time in the role before Mark Ruffalo took over for The Avengers. As things come full circle and we revisit some of these forgotten arcs, Leterrier has revealed his grand plans for a scrapped sequel.

In a candid interview with ComicBook.com, Leterrier has offered some insight into what he had planned, teasing an expanded family of Hulks long before Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk was on the scene. Confirming who would...

Like Depraved, a modern retelling of Frankenstein, Blackout finds writer-director Larry Fessenden once again toying with classic monster tropes. The new film focuses on a tortured artist, Charley (Alex Hurt), whose name is just a few letters removed from “Chaney.” Charley is dealing with a nasty case of werewolfism, which is the same affliction that plagued Lon Chaney Jr.’s character, Larry Talbot, in 1941’s The Wolf Man.
Where Depraved was a commentary on modern warfare, Ptsd, and the pharmaceutical industrial complex, Blackout narrows its focus to the business of being a modern white liberal in a small town. Charley is concerned about the environment, and he’s disturbed at the racist groupthink stoked by a local real estate magnate, Hammond (Marshall Bell), who happens to be his former boss and the father of his ex-girlfriend, Sharon (Addison Timlin). At one point, Charley asks a former co-worker what Hammond has...

Werewolf fans rejoice! Fantasia 2023 hosted the premiere of the new film from horror legend Larry Fessenden and it is not to be missed. Blackout brings all of the blood, fangs and carnage that you want out of a werewolf film, while also incorporating the thoughtful contemplation and real-world connection that Fessenden is known for. Much like his early film Habit, Blackout fixes its eye on a mainstay of horror cinema and finds a way to remix the genre staples while at the same time adding his own fingerprints to the narrative.
As the film opens, Charley (Alex Hurt) is checking out of the small motel that has been his temporary home for several weeks. He is in the middle of a separation from his wife Sharon (Addison Timlin) and everything else in his life seems to be at a point of change. We follow along as Charley meets up with...

While the 1970s was known as a wild, bold, experimental time in modern cinema—which extended to all genres, including science fiction—the 1980s were best known for… well, we don’t know what, exactly. The rise of the erotic thriller, the action superstar, and cookie-cutter safe high-concept star vehicles, perhaps? As for sci-fi, the decade was marked by both undisputed blockbusters, including the Star Wars and Star Trek sequels, Aliens, and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, as well as some inarguable classics like The Thing, Tron, and Blade Runner. Intriguingly, the more risky ones needed years to find their audience and critical acclaim.
At the same time, sci-fi began to rely less on literary adaptations of the previous decade and more on crossing its streams with other genres, like horror, the Western, and the action thriller—making somewhat of a turn away from the idea-driven films that had come before.

"Captain America 4" now has a new name. Originally titled "Captain America: New World Order," the movie is now "Captain America: Brave New World." Whether the new movie will pay tribute to Aldous Huxley's classic 1932 sci-fi novel "Brave New World" remains to be seen, and reps for Disney did not respond to Popsugar's request for comment about the change.
Anthony Mackie, who stars as hero Sam Wilson, announced the news on his Instagram on June 6. "When Harrison Ford tells you how kicking ass should look, you listen!" he wrote in the caption. "LoL… Thanks for the on set wisdom and laughs my friend! Can't wait to do it again… Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World in theaters May 3, 2024." However, shortly after Mackie shared that post, Marvel pushed back the film's release by two months.

Harrison Ford is well into filming Captain America: New World Order as the actor joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.
In a recent interview with Esquire, Ford opened up about the grueling schedule saying, “There are tough days and easy days and fun days and all kinds of days.”
He continued, “It’s a tough schedule and, yeah, it’s fun. But it’s not a walk in the park. It’s not fun fun. It’s work.”
Ford is taking over the role that Oscar-winner William Hurt played over the years in the MCU starting with 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Hurt last played the character in 2021’s Black Widow before his death earlier this year.
In addition to filming the Captain America sequel, Ford is also promoting Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The actor, at 80 years old, continued to do his own stunts...

Martin Scorsese urged Paul Schrader to keep working amid his wife’s health issues. Scorsese encouraged the “Taxi Driver” screenwriter to find a “balance” between aiding his wife, actress Mary Beth Hurt, with her Alzheimer’s diagnosis and continuing writing and directing.
“You have to strike a balance,” Scorsese told Schrader, as the “Master Gardener” director said to Curbed. “You can’t let her condition stop you from working.”
Schrader originally tried to care for Hurt in their Putnam County home but realized the care “needed to escalate” and relocated to assisted living facility Coterie Hudson Yards. “I started realizing that we’re not going to be able to take care of her anymore and wondering, ‘Where’s a good place?,'” Schrader recalled. “Am I going be left as the lonely old guy at the lake house, walking into walls, drinking? Is that going to be my fate?”

Ever since the printing press was invented, there's been no shortage of instances of books being banned. The reasons for these bans run the gamut from the religious to the political to the moral. Because the standards of decency have changed so much over the centuries, books that were once considered obscene are now socially acceptable, and sometimes, it's the other way around.
While the general intent of banning a book is to prevent readers from engaging with it, it often has the opposite effect. Labeling a book "forbidden" can bring more attention to it. This "Streisand Effect" makes a lot of sense. When the powers that be condemn a piece of media, this only increases the audience's curiosity about why it's so controversial. Not only have bans led to books becoming more popular, but it has also led to them getting the big screen treatment. Hollywood has rarely shied away from capitalizing on controversy,...

Gotham star Ben McKenzie is returning to broadcast television as the lead of ABC’s medical drama pilot The Hurt Unit, written by Promised Land creator Matt Lopez and former Seal Team showrunner John Glenn and to be directed by The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Marc Webb.
The Hurt Unit follows a highly skilled team of trauma surgeons and nurses who race into the field to treat the patients who won’t make it to the hospital in time. When the sick and the injured can’t get to the ER, the Hurt Unit (Hospital Urgent Response Team) brings the ER to them.

McKenzie will play Danny, a self-made surgeon and head of the elite Hurt Unit. He must make split-second decisions in the most harrowing circumstances, often at risk to his own life. While unquestionably a hero, Danny is also a pathological risk-taker who seems headed for a serious comeuppance.

The 1985 Peter Weir film "Witness" was a pretty massive gamble, but ended up paying off in spades. The film stars Harrison Ford as John Book, a police detective investigating a murder in an Amish community in rural Pennsylvania, and it's a smart neo-noir about corruption, innocence, and faith. Ford gives an incredibly nuanced performance; He was best known in 1985 for acting in genre fare like "Star Wars" and the "Indiana Jones" movies, but he wasn't known as a serious actor. "Blade Runner" had just bombed (probably in part because of Ford's lackluster voiceover in the theatrical cut), and producers and audiences alike wondered if Ford could carry such a serious, delicate film.
In the book "The Films of Harrison Ford," author Lee Pfeiffer explained that while Ford would eventually earn an Oscar nomination for the role, initially people were hesitant that he could pull it off. The actor was incredibly thankful for the opportunity,...

In Herman Melville's original 1851 novel "Moby-Dick," not much was known about the vengeful Capt. Ahab beyond his obsession with finding the story's titular whale. In Mike Barker's 2011 miniseries, Ahab (William Hurt) interacts with his on-screen wife Elizabeth (Gillian Anderson). Ethan Hawke plays Starbuck, Raoul Trujillo plays Queequeg, and Charlie Cox plays the stalwart narrator Ishmael. Cox has recently been getting a great deal of attention from Marvel fans for his performance as the superhero Daredevil in his own show, and for guest spots on "She Hulk: Attorney at Law" and in "Spider-Man: No Way Home." This author first noticed Cox for his performance as Lorenzo in Michael Radford's 2004 adaptation of "The Merchant of Venice." His appearance in "Moby Dick" would immediately be followed by 23 episode of the hit show "Boardwalk Empire," putting the actor on the map.

As one of Britain's most respected actors, John Hurt made an impression in even the smallest of roles. With his magnificent voice and distinctive appearance, he shone in every film in which he appeared, whether he was the lead or just making a cameo appearance. Perhaps this was due to his consummate professionalism and his ability to disappear into his roles. You never got the sense that he had much of an ego or, at the very least, cared less about personal vanity than making his characters feel authentic.
Below are just a handful of his finest film performances, ranked, although he had such a varied career that we could easily have made this a list of 20 best films and included his...

This article contains Alien spoilers
They say that in space, no one can hear you scream. For those who’ve watched Ridley Scott’s Alien, you’ll know that isn’t the case – with this sci-fi staple “screaming” about its legacy for the past 43 years. Making a household name of Sigourney Weaver as Lt. Ellen Ripley, Alien is tightly held as one of the all-time horror greats.
Although the franchise has since spun off into sequels, prequels, and those maligned Alien Vs Predator crossovers, it all returns to the Uscss Nostromo and its doomed crew. While it’s ironic that the titular alien is only on the screen for a total of four minutes, this isn’t the only factoid to slither from behind the scenes. Here are 10 things you might not know about Alien.
