Back in 2018 with “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” Netflix introduced interactive features as a way for viewers to take charge of a movie, using a controller to select diverse story paths. The filmmakers offered choices branching off from pivotal points within the narrative that led to a range of conclusions that either worked, eventually triggering the end credits, or didn’t, propelling the viewer back to an earlier point to try again. More programming utilizing this style shortly followed in other genres: the scripted comedy “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend,” the animated special “We Lost Our Human,” and the reality series “Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls.”
This innovative concept is now applied to the streamer’s growing stable of saccharine-but-sentimental romantic comedy features with “Choose Love.” Director Stuart McDonald (“A Perfect Pairing”) and writer-producer Josann McGibbon (“Runaway Bride”) center their tale on an indecisive career-driven woman who must choose...

Evil Dead Rise doesn’t do anything to reinvent the wheel or try anything too groundbreaking but reminds us how fun an Evil Dead film can be. It takes us back into the world and shows the horrors of demonic possession, keeping the blood thirty delights of the original. It may be nothing new, but Evil Dead Rise is another good entrance into the world that Sami Raimi built 42 years ago.

This year’s box office hit Evil Dead Rise is being unleashed on 4K and Blu-ray on June 27 – with no special features, we’re bummed to report – but it’s also streaming at home right now.
In addition to being up for grabs on various VOD platforms, Evil Dead Rise also made its debut on the Max – formerly HBO Max – streaming service today, June 23, 2023.
As you may recall, Evil Dead Rise was originally going straight-to-Max, but the pivot to theatrical ended up being a profitable move for Warner Bros. At the worldwide box office, the well-received sequel scared up a whopping $146.3 million worldwide in theaters.
Expect more Evil Dead soon…

Bruce Campbell has taken to Twitter this afternoon to thank Evil Dead fans for making Evil Dead Rise a smash hit in theaters, the film officially passing $100 million worldwide!
Evil Dead Rise is now officially the highest grossing film in the entire Evil Dead franchise, with Evil Dead 2013’s box office total ending at $97.5 million (unadjusted for inflation).
With a budget of just $19 million, Evil Dead Rise is needless to say a massive success, and it surely won’t be very long before the franchise finds its way back into theaters. We had to wait a full 10 years between Evil Dead and Evil Dead Rise. Expect a shorter wait this time around.
The best aspect of this success story? As you may recall, Evil Dead Rise was at one point in time going straight-to-hbo Max. New Line/WB sure dodged a bullet with that one.

In just three weeks of theatrical release, Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here), a movie that was once intended to go straight to the HBO Max (now simply known as Max) streaming service, has racked up almost $100 million at the worldwide box office. To celebrate his film’s success, writer/director Lee Cronin has taken to social media to share a look at some Evil Dead Rise concept art. The story Cronin crafted for Evil Dead Rise has the following synopsis: A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment.

Writer/Director Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise presented several buzzworthy Evil Dead moments and set pieces, including the title card that arrives just as a Deadite rises from the lake. All of it, of course, by meticulous design as evidenced by the film’s stunning concept art.
Cronin took to Twitter today to share some of the concept art for the new entry in the Evil Dead franchise.
The filmmaker said, “Nothing on screen in #EvilDeadRise happened by accident. It took meticulous planning with an incredible group of talented people. And concept art was the entry point into our world. Here’s a little taste.”

The Evil Dead series might be the greatest argument against literacy the movies have ever produced. Each film drops its protagonists into a series of bloody horrors that could have easily been avoided had they just never opened a book. The latest entry, Evil Dead Rise, adds vinyl to the list of cursed physical media, but switches out the franchise’s remote cabin in the woods for a high-rise apartment building. The changes mesh well with the franchise’s simple formula, reinvigorating a series that has lasted much longer than Michiganders Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell probably expected 40 years ago.
Raimi and Campbell serve as executive producers for Evil Dead Rise, similar to their roles with Fede Alvarez’s 2013 Evil Dead remake. But where Alvarez’s film seemed intent on proving that it could be the most deadly serious horror movie ever, in its best moments, Evil Dead Rise captures...

This Evil Dead Rise article contains spoilers.
Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment of the horror series, opened in second place in the domestic box office this past weekend, pulling in an impressive $23.5 million, and $40 million worldwide, which would suggest there’s more boom left in the franchise boomstick.
And though writer/director Lee Cronin says he “was never trying to bait for sequels,” he nonetheless sets up a few story ideas should he return to the world of deadites and Necronomicon created in 1981 by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell, who starred as Ashley J. Williams.
In a recent episode of Den of Geek‘s paranormal pop culture show Talking Strange, Cronin — as well as stars Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan — spoke to host Aaron Sagers about the film’s ending and what happens immediately following that scene.

Ten years ago, the characters in Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead were cleverly given first names that allowed the first letters of each of their names to spell out Demon – David, Eric, Mia, Olivia, Natalie – and Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise has similarly hidden some Easter Eggs within the characters’ names. Every character in the new movie is named after a past Evil Dead star!
Here’s the full main character roster, and the stars their names pay tribute to…
Actor/Character: Lily Sullivan – Beth

Evil Dead Rise doesn’t do anything to reinvent the wheel or try anything too groundbreaking but reminds us how fun an Evil Dead film can be. It takes us back into the world and shows the horrors of demonic possession, keeping the blood thirty delights of the original. It may be nothing new, but Evil Dead Rise is another good entrance into the world that Sami Raimi built 42 years ago.
This time around the cabin in the woods is swapped for an apartment block in LA. The premise almost remains the same, however. You find a book bound in human flesh and open it, what’s the worst that can happen? Well, that’s exactly what the characters here find out. Contains spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise"
The "Evil Dead" franchise is amorphous. Sam Raimi's original "The Evil Dead" was a touchstone genre masterpiece, though its follow-up, "Evil Dead II," is still hotly debated. Is it a remake or a sequel? There are the bonkers yet sensational "Army of Darkness," a television series (gone too soon), and Fede Álvarez's slick 2013 remake. Now, there's Lee Cronin's "Evil Dead Rise," which shifts the action from the woods to a Loa Angeles apartment building. No two "Evil Dead" movies are alike. Each is a gruesome springboard for new filmmakers to try their hand at Deadite mayhem.
They are some of the greatest scary movies ever made and arguably the most consistent franchise in horror history. Unlike several other recent remakes (including David Gordon Green's "Halloween" trilogy or the two new "Scream" entries), "Evil Dead" isn't bound to a strict chronology.

The “Evil Dead” franchise returns 10 years after the re-imagined “Evil Dead” of 2013, which holds the record for the most amount of fake blood used in a horror film. While it doesn’t seem like the new film went down the same path, although it is still very bloody, “Evil Dead Rise” is a family drama under all the blood and gore about staying in touch, not lying to, and cherishing your family. Yes, it’s an interesting premise for demonic possession that can’t be exorcised or destroyed. The Necronomicon has found new life and a new appearance in the latest “Evil Dead.” Let’s understand the lead characters of the new horror film and the final girls’ journey forward.
Spoilers Ahead
Ellie, The Mother
Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) is the mother of three kids and recently separated from her husband. The three of them live in an apartment in LA.

“Evil Dead Rise” might not be able to vanquish the soon-to-three-peat box office champion “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” but the horror entry is still chainsawing off its own solid opening on domestic charts.
The Warner Bros. release earned $10.3 million from 3,402 locations on Friday, a figure that includes $2.5 million in previews. It’s an effective start for the horror entry, which now has a strong chance of outperforming its projections, which had pegged the film with a $15 million to $20 million debut heading into the weekend. That’s not too shabby of a haul for a production originally slated to release directly on HBO Max. Even more impressively, “Rise” is contending with two horror releases from last week, “Renfield” and “The Pope’s Exorcist.”

The box office continues to heat up as the summer season approaches.
Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie remains a monster at the multiplex as it crosses the $400 million mark domestically and $866.1 million globally. It will easily win the weekend race in North America with a projected haul of $58 million for a domestic cume of $434.1 million through Sunday. Overseas, it’s on course to earn another $65 million for a foreign total of $432 million.
The movie adaptation of the Nintendo video game is playing more like an all-audience blockbuster than an animated tentpole thanks to its multi-generational appeal and will become the first movie of 2023 to join the billion-dollar club.
Super Mario continues to shatter records. At $58 million, the pic would supplant Jurassic World ($46.4 million) to rank as Universal’s biggest third weekend in history. It would be the seventh-biggest third weekend among any film at the domestic...

New Line Cinema and Renaissance Pictures present a return to the iconic horror franchise, “Evil Dead Rise,” from writer/director Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”). The movie stars Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols (“Reminiscence”) and introducing Nell Fisher (“Northspur”).
Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sutherland and Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

This article contains mild spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise.""Evil Dead Rise," the latest installment in the now 40-odd-year-old "Evil Dead" franchise, is filled to the brim with evidence of writer/director Lee Cronin's bonafides toward being a fan of the series. While the film isn't merely a work of fan service, the movie is suffused with references to the earlier "Evil Dead" films, from Deadites screaming "Dead by dawn!" to a very particular clock being seen at a cabin in the film's opening sequence.
Yet Cronin isn't content with paying homage to just the "Evil Dead" series — in addition to multiple references to Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," "Evil Dead Rise" contains some latent homages to numerous other horror films, including Lamberto Bava's similar demons-loose-in-a-high-rise splatter opus, "Demons 2." Most surprisingly, however, "Evil Dead Rise" appears to have a good deal in common with another Sam Raimi film,...

Nothing can keep the dead down. “Evil Dead Rise,” the latest movie in the horror franchise created by Sam Raimi, has made $2.5 million in Thursday previews at the domestic box office.
It’s a strong start for a horror movie in April, but it won’t be enough to stop the mushroom-powered, meteoric rise of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which is projected to earn another massive haul with $45 million to $50 million in its third weekend. Universal and Illumination’s hit Nintendo adaptation already has $724 million globally and will soon pass “Minions: The Rise of Gru” as the highest-grossing animated movie in the post-pandemic era.
“Evil Dead Rise” is expected to scare up between $15 million and $20 million in its opening weekend, with some predictions as high as $25 million. It’s the fifth movie in Warner Bros. and New Line’s “Evil Dead” franchise, which began way back in 1981 with Raimi’s original,...

Bloody Disgusting’s Evil Dead Rise review is spoiler-free.
A lakeside cabin opening sequence in Evil Dead Rise, written and directed by Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground), operates as a declaration that the latest installment of this franchise will fit snugly within the world of Evil Dead while branching out into new terrain and ideas. That means a self-contained story that brings the gnarly gore and Deadite thrills, even when its lore isn’t quite as well defined as its visceral terror.

It has been a full decade since an "Evil Dead" movie was on the big screen, but Lee Cronin has brought the Deadites back to life once again with "Evil Dead Rise," which brings the franchise to the big city for the first time ever. There's plenty to discuss and debate featured in the film, but we're here to talk a little bit about the ending. More specifically, that absolutely wild monster that appears to bring the whole thing to a close.
The film reaches its conclusion when Beth (Lily Sullivan) attempts to escape the high rise with Kassie (Nell Fisher) following the film's blood-soaked events. But before they can make their escape, a horrifying beast serving as an amalgam of the previously dispatched Deadites tries its best to prevent that from happening.
It's one of the most unique and terrifying creations...

This article contains massive spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise."As much as we humans love to champion our capacity for free will, life is inevitably made up of events that occur without our intent, and beyond our control. We can all attempt to make a plan for how our lives will go, but in the end, living is as much reacting as it is acting.
These seismic events that change the course of one's life don't necessarily have to be traumatic. For those in the "Evil Dead" universe, however, trauma is an unfortunately perennial thing. The latest installment of the franchise, "Evil Dead Rise," sees writer/director Lee Cronin soft-reboot the series yet again after 2013's "Evil Dead" and the 2015-18 TV series "Ash vs Evil Dead." This too is par for the course: one could argue that, despite numerous bits of connective tissue, every "Evil Dead" film contains a little continuity rebooting.

Evil Dead Rise actress Nell Fisher and Bad Sisters actor Michael Smiley are set to join Elijah Wood in Bookworm, a new family adventure comedy from New Zealand director Ant Timpson (Come to Daddy).
Fisher will play Mildred, a 12-year-old girl whose life is turned upside down when her estranged, washed-up American magician father, Strawn Wise (Wood), comes to look after her. Hoping to bond with the tween, Strawn takes Mildred on an ill-advised camping trip into the rugged New Zealand wilderness in a quest to find the mythological beast known as the Canterbury Panther, named after the region on New Zealand’s South Island.
The project will reteam Wood with Come to Daddy director Timpson and will see the Lord of the Rings actor return to New Zealand to shoot.

Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise is its own diabolical concoction, mindful of its cinematic legacy yet happy to override the rules in any way it sees fit. It’s the fifth instalment in the long-running horror franchise but not really a sequel. Nor is it a fully-fledged reboot of Sam Raimi’s electric 1981 original. Though Fede Álvarez took largely the same approach in his efficient and brutal “re-imagining” from 2013, Cronin’s is the more daring film. Álvarez still tied his story to a cabin in the woods, five oblivious young adults and a dark cellar concealing ageless malice. Cronin borrows only a few familiar cues from Raimi’s original – some familiar chanting, the same insidious sound design, the favoured chainsaw of Bruce Campbell’s final boy, Ash – while relocating events to downtown Los Angeles.

Releasing in theaters this weekend, fifth franchise installment Evil Dead Rise opens up the saga beyond the cabin and beyond any characters we’re familiar with, introducing a brand new storyline centered around a brand new Book of the Dead. It would seem the possibilities with the franchise are limitless, and the idea well isn’t running dry in the least.
So what’s next from the Evil Dead saga, beyond Evil Dead Rise? Speaking with Av Club this week, producer Bruce Campbell teases More movies in the Near future!
“It’s all about the books now,” Campbell tells the outlet. “It has nothing to do with Ash or any particular character. In Army of Darkness, we first saw three books. So we know there are three out there, and none of them are any good. It’s about: where does that darn book wind up, who gets it, and what happens?...

Dormant for ten years, the Evil Dead have finally been exhumed by Warner Bros. and “The Hole in the Ground” director Lee Cronin.
The urban horror show — in theaters this Friday — plays out in the totally screwed upper floor of a Los Angeles apartment newly infested with Deadites. And though it’s set far from the cabin in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, the spirits of the legendary 1981 cheapie, its brilliant comedic sequel from 1987, and even a twinge of its divisive (stupidly named) third chapter, 1992’s “Army of Darkness,” live on in this disturbed metropolis.
“I’m a fan of the movies, but I had no interest in making another ‘Evil Dead’ movie at the cabin because they’d done a reboot,” Cronin told IndieWire in an interview via Zoom, referencing Fede Álvarez’s ruthless, blood-soaked take on the Necronomicon from 2013. “So I wasn’t gonna reboot a reboot. And...
