The career of Chadwick Boseman continues to go from strength to strength, as he lines up another high profile role to tackle post-Captain America: Civil War. The actor, who will debut the much anticipated character of Black Panther in that tent-pole movie, has been cast as Supreme Justice Thurgood Marshall in the film Marshall, which will be something of a biopic of the legendary legal icon, who became the first African American judge appointed to the Supreme Court in 1967.
The film is to be directed by Reginald Hudlin, who has focused mainly on producing and television directing for over a decade, and will be working from a script by Michael and Jacob Koskoff (MacBeth). Rather than attempting to encompass the entirety of what was a stellar career, the film will instead centre on a specific case – making the project essentially a period drama.

Chadwick Boseman just pulled a biopic hat trick — booking his third role as a real-life figure for “Marshall,” about the first African-American Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Reggie Hudlin, producer of this year’s Oscar telecast, will direct the film from a script by Jacob Koskoff (The Weinstein Company’s “Macbeth”) and his father, trial lawyer Michael Koskoff. The film will follow one of Marshall’s earlier landmark cases before he ascended to the bench. China’s Super Hero Films has fully financed the project, tapping prolific producer Paula Wagner (“Mission Impossible,” “The Last Samurai”) and her Chestnut Ridge Productions.

Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard deliver gripping performances in a dark, atmospheric and bloody MacBeth. While this dark, bloody film is powerful, this film should not be one’s first introduction to Shakespeare’s classic, as a significant amount of the play itself is missing. No boiling cauldron and “double, double toil and trouble” open this version of the Scottish play, although the three “weird sisters” appear after a battle with their prophetic pronouncements. It is more an updated interpretation than the definitive screen adaption but still a must-see for fans of the Bard, as well as a worthy addition to the film canon of his works.
Brooding, bloody and filled with ghosts, director Justin Kurzel’s MacBeth takes place in a ruggedly beautiful landscape, creating a film that is visually striking. As the film unfolds, the screen often suffused with red, and landscapes take on increasingly darker tones. Battle scenes,...

Macbeth
Directed by Justin Kurzel
Written by Todd Louiso, Michael Lesslie and Jacob Koskoff (Based on the play by Shakespeare)
U.K., France, U.S., 2015
There have been countless adaptations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet, but with the exception of Roman Polanski’s 1971 film, Macbeth has largely gone ignored by cinema. Justin Kurzel, fresh off the success of The Snowtown Murders, may have delivered the definitive take on the Scottish Thane. From the very beginning Kurzel marks that his vision will be different, as the film opens on the funeral of a small child, then transitions to bloody combat. Usually set on the stage, depictions of war in Macbeth are avoided because of budget constraints and available space–a shame considering how influential those scenes prove to be. The violence and trauma of the warring tribes and his child’s death sets the stage for Macbeth’s...

Brutal. Ferocious. Intense. If you think those words apply to the latest technical challenge on Bake Off, then Justin Kurzel's visually stunning adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Scottish play' should set you straight. Spearheaded by Michael Fassbender's mesmerising lead performance, this tragic tale grips your senses from the beginning and never lets go.
Fassbender initially cuts a traumatised yet courageous figure, leading his men into bloody battle before encountering three witches armed with a prophecy. They tell him that he's destined to become the King of Scotland, an ambition later fuelled by the malevolent manipulations of his wife (Marion Cotillard). Deception, murder and madness ensue, amidst a gritty and breathtaking landscape that alternates texturally between fire and ice.
When such a familiar text (the scourge of many a Gcse English Lit student) is subject to yet another adaption, you have to question its purpose. What new elements can it bring?...

Macbeth
Directed by Justin Kurzel
Written by Jacob Koskoff, Todd Louiso
UK 2015
The final film in competition, Justin Kurzel’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth delivers a spectacle of dripping blood, slow-motion battle scenes, sprawling Scottish highlands and Michael Fassbender. Fassbender stars as the Scottish warrior turned regicide and paranoid monarch, who after a particularly bloody battle has a vision of three witches predicting he will be King of Scotland. Macbeth starts out as an honorable soldier loyal to King Duncan (David Thewlis) and decides to only become king the “natural way”. However, after imprudently sharing the witches’ prophecy with his wife, played by Marion Cotillard, Macbeth finds himself constrained by her ambitious power lust.
Finding the right balance between words and images is essential when adapting a Shakespearean play for the screen and Kurzel’s weapon of choice is the emphasis on the rugged, indomitable beauty of the Scottish landscape,...

Tonight’s screening of Macbeth winds up the presentation of movies in competition for Cannes‘ top prize, the Palme d’Or, which will be announced Sunday. Directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender in the title role and Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth, the film has been rapturously received by many critics, although that’s not necessarily a barometer for traditionally finicky (or quirky, take your pick) juries at the festival. Of all of William Shakespeare’s classic works, Macbeth must surely be amongst his most famous.
Certainly, in the more than 400 years since its first publication, it has been one of the most frequently adapted; revived regularly on stage and re-envisioned time and again in the age of cinema and television.
Now comes a bold and daring version starring Academy-Award nominee Michael Fassbender (12 Years A Slave) and Academy-Award winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose).
Directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown), MacBeth had its World Premiere at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and was the final movie to screen in Competition.
In his review, Guy Lodge (Variety) praises the director’s “thrillingly elemental new adaptation. Fearsomely visceral and impeccably performed, it’s a brisk, bracing update, even as it remains exquisitely in period.”

Cannes — This Scottish General is a mad warrior. He takes down one victim after another, seemingly fueled by an endless stream of rage. He applies war paint to the faces of his teenage soldiers and throws them onto the battlefield, eventually haunted by their wasted deaths. Constant war has made Macbeth a man on the edge of madness, and that’s exactly what director Justin Kurzel wants to exploit in his stylistic new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic play. One of Shakespeare’s most acclaimed creations, “Macbeth” has been adapted as a film or TV film at least 15 times in some form or another, with the most notable interpretations coming from Orson Wells, Roman Polanski and Akira Kurosawa (“Throne of Blood”). Kurzel differentiates his predecessors by incorporating a striking and gritty aesthetic to the proceedings while also abridging the story to allow for a shorter movie-going experience. (Polanski’s...

It has been a long and winding road for "Macbeth," Aussie director Justin Kurzel's revamp of the Shakespeare classic of guilt and revenge, to finally get to the Cannes competition this year. This adaptation of the deliciously dark masterpiece of evil stars Michael Fassbender as the titular power-mongering general and Marion Cotillard as the scheming, hand-wringing Lady Macbeth. Kurzel debuted in 2011 with the unsettling and powerful "Snowtown," which centered on the grisly true story of a spate of brutal cult murders in an atrophying Aussie suburb. So "Macbeth" feels like a natural progression, another grim portrait of power gone horribly awry. "Macbeth" has been adapted time and again, most notably by director Roman Polanski in 1971 just after Sharon Tate's murder. But if it's anything like "Snowtown," Kurzel's new revamp, from a script by Jacob Koskoff and Todd Louiso, will be visceral and real. Some are calling this a red carpet.

Take another look @ leaked battle footage from the foggy set of director Justin Kurzel's "Macbeth", written by Jacob Koskoff and Todd Louiso, based on William Shakespeare's play of the same name, starring Michael Fassbender ("X-Men: Days Of Future Past"), Marion Cotillard, Sean Harris, Paddy Considine, Elizabeth Debicki and David Thewlis:
"...after being flattered by 'Three Witches' and his own wife, 'Macbeth' rationalizes that murdering his king and usurping the throne is the right thing to do.
"Ultimately, however, the prophecies of the witches prove misleading, and Macbeth alienates the nobility of Scotland, his wife commits suicide and he is defeated in battle by 'Prince Malcolm'. As the King's armies disintegrate he encounters 'Macduff', a refugee nobleman whose wife and children had earlier been murdered by Macbeth's death squads.
"Upon realizing that he will die if he duels Macduff, Macbeth at first refuses to do so.

Though we won't be seeing Australian director Justin Kurzel's "Macbeth" until 2015, a few still enticing new stills from the film have landed. This adaptation of Shakespeare's deliciously dark masterpiece of evil stars Michael Fassbender as the titular power-mongering general and Marion Cotillard as the scheming, hand-wringing Lady Macbeth. Justin Kurzel confidently made his directorial debut in 2011 with the powerful "Snowtown," which centered on the grizzly true story of a spate of cult murders in a dreary Australian suburb. With that film in mind, "Macbeth" feels like a natural progression, and another grim portrait of power gone horribly awry. But if it's anything like "Snowtown," Kurzel's new revamp, from a script by Jacob Koskoff and Todd Louiso, ought to be a visceral and disturbing experience. Count us excited for this one.

I honestly think Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is the only film adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" that I've seen. I haven't seen Orson Welles' version, nor Roman Polanski's, but I'll surely check out Justin Kurzel's new adaptation once it arrives, and I have to suspect it will have its first official peek out in September in either Toronto or Venice. Today a couple of first look pictures from the film, featuring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard as Macbeth and "Lady M" have arrived courtesy of The Daily Mail's set visit report. My only concern is the language. Shakespeare's verse remains in the film, though it has apparently been "edited" according to The Daily Mail's Baz Bamigboye, quoting Fassbender who says, "There's a vibrancy and intelligence to the script." It's always tough to get the tone of a film right when it comes to Shakespeare's...

The rise of Michael Fassbender has been one of the best things to see in recent years, with his acclaimed performance in 12 Years a Slave earning him the Oscar nomination he was robbed of on Steve McQueen’s Shame. Now the actor is turning his sights to Shakespeare, in Justin Kurzel’s adaptation of the classic tragedy, Macbeth.
StudioCanal have announced that production on Macbeth is officially underway, with ScreenDaily revealing that the film is set to shoot for seven weeks in England and Scotland.
Fassbender takes the lead as the titular general-turned-King of Scotland, with Marion Cotillard, Sean Harris, Paddy Considine, David Thewlis, Jack Reynor, and Elizabeth Debicki starring alongside him.
Cotillard of course takes the female lead as Lady Macbeth, with Harris taking on the role of Macduff and Considine playing Banquo.
Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire.

Michael Fassbender is hot. The Weinstein Company has picked up Us and Canadian rights to Justin Kurzel's big-screen adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" from Studio Canal, which will star Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. Jacob Koskoff and Todd Louiso ("The Marc Please Experience") have co-penned the script. In case the name Justin Kurzel doesn't ring a bell, the Aussie director helmed 2011's brilliant and utterly disturbing "Snowtown," which focused on the real-life case of a young teen and his mother's boyfriend brutally killing a number of their atrophying small town's inhabitants and drifters. Fassbender can currently be seen in Steve McQueen's highly praised "12 Years a Slave." While there's Oscar buzz for Fassbender's performance (among many other performances in the film), the actor has opted out of strenuous awards-season campaigning. He's got Ridley Scott's violent drug-deal-gone-bad thriller "The Counselor" hitting theaters this weekend, and just began shooting a...

Natalie Portman is the latest exceptional actress to take a crack at one of Shakespeare's most notorious characters, Lady Macbeth. The new film production of "Macbeth" was just announced yesterday, with Michael Fassbender as the eponymous lead and Justin Kurzel ("Snowtown") in the director's chair. These announcements are coming down the pipeline pretty quickly, so it looks like Kurzel et al are on track for their late 2013 shooting schedule. Although writers Todd Louiso and Jacob Koskoff have more experience with comedy than Shakespearean drama, anyone who's familiar with Kurzel's brutal film "Snowtown" should be eager to see this adaptation. It's already a wonderfully gruesome and thrilling play, but the script is described as having "a visceral approach to the story, including significant battles scenes." It will be a period piece, set in the play's era of the 11th century and using Shakespeare's text. It will be interesting to see how...
