At some point in middle school or high school, most people were exposed to two different types of rudimentary essay-writing. There’s the five-paragraph essay, that goes, intro/thesis-body-body-body-conclusion. And there’s the compare-and-contrast essay, in which you start with two seemingly opposed subjects and unify them by juxtaposing the ways they’re different, but also the ways in which they’re similar. From a distance of decades it’s easy to mock both essay structures, but they’re both incredibly useful ways of teaching young writers to approach complicated topics.
I’m not sure if the new season of National Geographic’s Genius anthology is the most ambitious compare-and-contrast essay every written, but MLK/X is at least a generally well-intentioned illustration of both pros and cons of the format.

Fresh off an acclaimed performance as the Chevalier de Saint-Georges in “Chevalier,” Kelvin Harrison Jr. takes on the mantle of another historic figure, Martin Luther King Jr., in the new season of “Genius.” But unlike past installments of this National Geographic anthology series which have focused on Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso and Aretha Franklin, this season centers on King and Malcolm X, played by Aaron Pierre. Watch the official trailer for “Genius: MLK/X” above; the first episodes air on February 1.
The trailer begins by showing the only time King and Malcolm X ever met, which took place in 1964 in Washington, D.C.. In real life, Black civil rights pioneers Martin Luther King and Malcolm X met only once, briefly, in Washington, D.C., in 1964 as both attended a Senate debate.
And the trailer for Disney’s Genius: MLK/X docuseries, which dropped Thursday, opens with that chance Capitol Hill encounter that foreshadowed their dueling movements and personalities.
“We meet at last,” Malcolm X declares as the two black leaders shake hands, while in those years from the church pulpit, prison cells and elsewhere they worked to advance racial equality with competing movements: King favoring nonviolent activism as part of his civil rights struggle, and Muslim leader Malcolm X opting for Black empowerment and self-determination to battle against white supremacy.
Ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Disney plans two episodes to bow weekly on National Geographic from Feb. 1, and to then stream on Disney+ and Hulu the day after.

Viola Davis has already won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and two Tonys, and Monday night she became only the third person to have an Egot and Film at Lincoln Center’s prestigious Chaplin Award, a feat only achieved by Mike Nichols and Audrey Hepburn.
At Monday’s Chaplin Award gala in New York, which Film at Lincoln Center president Lesli Klainberg said is meant to recognize Davis’ “whole career” and honor “someone whose career is still ahead of them as well,” the acclaimed actress and producer told The Hollywood Reporter that what she really wants to do is direct.
“I feel like I have a director’s head,” Davis said. “I love tapping into [other actors’] potential. And I’m always watching movies saying, ‘If that beautiful actor had just done this, this and that…'”

Like many others, Jessica Chastain thinks Viola Davis should’ve nabbed an Oscar nomination at this year’s ceremony for her role in “The Woman King”.
Davis, who starred as Nanisca in the 2022 flick, was honoured at the 48th Chaplin Award Gala presented by Film at Lincoln Center in New York City on Monday.

Chastain was on hand to pay tribute to her “The Help” co-star Davis, sharing during her speech: “When I see a movie like ‘The Woman King’, it has Viola’s fingerprints all over it.
“A movie like that with a female director [Gina Prince-Bythewood] and a cast of powerful Black female leads can get made in Hollywood today because of Viola’s lifelong advocacy for women of colour.
“Maybe one day a movie like that can get nominated for an Oscar,” Chastain then added,...

Well, “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” has been taken quite literally by law enforcement.
The Neon-distributed film based on the non-fiction book by of the same name has inspired an FBI alert warning against inspiring real-life terrorist attacks on energy infrastructures. Rolling Stone reported that the FBI bulletin warns against the film’s threat to fossil fuel production.
“The film has potential to inspire threat actors to target oil and gas infrastructure with explosives or other destructive devices,” the April 6 alert from FBI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate reads. The directive encouraged police and government officials to look for suspicious activity such as “people attempting to access infrastructure facilities to discrete or unusual use of cameras or video recorders, sketching, or note-taking aimed at learning about infrastructure operations,” Rolling Stone wrote.
Similarly, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives alert read, “The consensus amongst law enforcement and...

The efficiently titled How to Blow Up a Pipeline weaves a fictional story of eco-sabotage out of Marxist academic Andreas Malm’s book on climate activism. It’s also self-critical when it comes to cinema’s role within the movement.
One of the film’s central activists, Dwayne (Jake Weary), a Texan farmer whose land has been forcibly seized by the government for the construction of a pipeline, is interviewed on camera by a crew of documentarians. They’re keen to “put a human face on this crisis” in order to “raise awareness”. But all they’re really doing is demanding that Dwayne recount his pain for their own purposes. Will they contribute to his legal expenses? Will they stick around to fight his cause once the cameras have stopped rolling? We all know that they won’t. Filmmaker Daniel Goldhaber, who applied a similar sense of moral clarity to his debut,...

While Fox News has made very clear over the years where its messaging stands when it comes to the urgency of climate change, anchors on “The Big Saturday Show” felt they were given all-new reason to sound their alarm with the release of Neon’s “How to Blow Up a Pipeline.”
Featuring a story inspired by Andreas Malm’s 2021 nonfiction release of the same name, the indie feature comes from director Daniel Goldhaber, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ariela Barer and Jordan Sjol. Admitting that he hadn’t seen the film himself — “I went through and watched the trailer, watched parts of it” — Fox News co-host David Webb torched the project as “leftist Hollywood propaganda” on Saturday, while other panelists raised questions about the existence of climate change at all.
“Climate craziness reaching a new level — a new film is out called ‘How to Blow Up a Pipeline,’ and you...
