Former President Barack Obama made a surprise appearance at the White House state dinner on Thursday. The list of distinguished guests included former President and First Lady Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, actor LeVar Burton, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and more. Around 500 people attended the event on the White House’s South Lawn.
The White House welcomed Kenyan President William Ruto and first lady Rachel Ruto. Other notable Kenyan figures attended, as did the Rutos’ three daughters. President Joe Biden honored the Rutos in his toast and quoted former President Jimmy Carter‘s 1980 speech when another Kenyan president was invited to the White House.
“Neighbors do not share a border but share beliefs,” Biden said. Biden’s speech honored the alliance between the United States and Kenya. A state dinner is one of the most significant ways a president can acknowledge the importance of a foreign power.

Reba McEntire recruited budding country star Post Malone to pay tribute to Dickey Betts at the 2024 ACM Awards. The guitarist and a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band died last month at 80.
Malone had just wrapped a performance of his first proper country single, “I Had Some Help,” at the show when host McEntire joined him onstage. After coyly revealing he was a bit nervous, Malone was invited by McEntire to pay tribute to Betts with a take on the Allman Brothers Band’s 1973 hit “Ramblin’ Man.” The pair...

At A Down-home Eatery near his waterfront home on Florida’s west coast in 2017, Dickey Betts, stout and white-haired but still evoking his youthful intensity, was asked about his imposing reputation. “People are a little bit standoffish because they think if they say something wrong, I’ll be aggressive or something with them,” he told Rolling Stone, adding with his drawl, “But I’m not like that at all. Unless you start saying shit that’s really demeaning, and then I won’t hesitate to …” Betts didn’t finish the sentence,...

Post Malone kickstarts his country era with new single “I Had Some Help.” He debuted the song, which features Morgan Wallen, live at Stagecoach last month.
Post Malone and Wallen’s inevitable summer hit is a big country-pop tune, in the vein of many of Wallen’s own singles. The song is about a relationship falling apart and knowing that it wasn’t just one person’s fault. “It ain’t like I can make this kinda mess all by myself,” they sing on the chorus. “Don’t act like...

Drugs Never Seemed like a problem to Elvie Shane. Dabbling in cocaine, meth, and heroin were all part of the future country singer’s college days in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Mark Knopfler has teamed up with a host of fellow guitar legends to record a version of his song “Going Home (Theme from Local Hero)” to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America.
The Dire Straits frontman tapped Eric Clapton, Slash (Guns N’ Roses), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Brian May (Queen), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Pete Townshend (The Who), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Bruce Springsteen, Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones), Joan Jett, and many more, forming what he has dubbed “Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes.” Notably, the star-studded version opens with the final recorded guitar track by the late Jeff Beck.
Knopfler’s longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher handled the production of the track, which might be the greatest assemblage of guitar talent to co-exist on a single song. The Sgt. Pepper‘s-style artwork was created by Sir Peter Blake.

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani aren’t opposed to performing together. At one point, Stefani even quipped that she was the only singer her husband was allowed to do a duet with. But there was one joint performance that Shelton once regretted doing with his wife.
Blake Shelton felt Gwen Stefani made him look ‘terrible’ during this performance Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton | Taylor Hill/WireImage
Shelton might’ve felt upstaged by his wife during one of his shows. In 2016, he performed his hits alongside other Country music stars for the Country Jam 16 event. The event was held in Colorado, and featured other headliners like Brad Paisley and Zac Brown Band to name a few. It was a particularly special occasion for Shelton, as the singer was also turning 40 back then.
His girlfriend at the time Stefani wasn’t advertised at all for the event, and came on stage as a nice surprise.

Stephen Colbert is set to return to the Ed Sullivan Theater on Monday after suffering a ruptured appendix.
The Late Show was canceled last week after the comedian had to have surgery. It meant that he wasn’t able to talk to guests including Jennifer Garner, Baz Luhrmann, Patrick Stewart, Jon Batiste and Kelsey Grammer, nor air Barbra Streisand taking The Colbert Questionert.
However, he is planning to be on the show next week and has lined up a guest list of stars.
On Monday, Sarah Paulson and Jason Isbell will be on the show with the Drive-By Trucker performing with his band the 400 Unit. Tuesday sees Mark Ruffalo and a performance by Daniel Caesar; Wednesday has Nicki Minaj and Sara Bareilles, while Colbert will close out the week with Rep. Liz Cheney, who is touting a new book with the revelation that Donald Trump was “depressed” and “not eating” after the January 6 insurrection.

The children of Ukraine, the ones who have survived, are traumatized.
As the war — which began in February 2022 with the invasion by Russia — rages on, U.S. officials have estimated that the number of people killed or injured in the 18-month conflict is nearing 500,000. And among the estimated 70,000 Ukrainians killed and more than 100,000 citizens of the country wounded, at least 1,500 of the deaths and injuries have been children, according to an estimate in June by Denise Brown, the United Nations’ humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine.
“Children are experiencing severe psychological trauma because of the war,” says Dr. Irwin Redlener, co-founder of the Ukraine Children’s Action Project (Ucap), a nonprofit that he and his wife, Karen, started soon after the war began last year. The charity is working to help kids in the country — as well as children who are refugees in Poland — gain access to mental health services, health care...

It’s a time-honored tradition in popular music to embrace a persona or even fudge the truth a bit in service of an artistic statement. But maybe if your statement is an extremely jingoistic one rooted in myopic, rose-colored views of an American pastoral — like Jason Aldean’s “Try That In a Small Town” — you might want to favor printing the fact over the legend (so to speak) and not use a bunch of footage from Canada in your music video.

Country singer Jimmie Allen has been suspended by his record label, booking agency and management company, and removed from the lineup for CMA Fest following allegations that he raped and sexually abused his former manager.
“In light of [the] allegations against Jimmie Allen, Bbr Music Group has decided to suspend all activity with him, effective immediately,” a representative for the label tells The Hollywood Reporter. A UTA spokesperson added on Friday: “We have suspended our representation of Jimmie Allen due to the recent allegations against him, which we take seriously.“
On Thursday, hours before the Academy of Country Music Awards aired live, Variety reported that Allen’s former day-to-day manager, identified only as Jane Doe, claimed he forced himself onto her and abused her several times.
Allen claims that they had a consensual sexual relationship.

Across his two blockbuster albums, Jack Harlow had all the elements of pop-rap superstardom on full display — the chameleonic swagger, the everydude sincerity evidenced by his affinity for namechecking chain restaurants, the puppydog hearththrob confessions, and the phone numbers of the most famous guest rappers in existence. He had enough skills to get the co-sign from Kanye West and Drake, and the pop acumen to land a Number One Billboard single. However, if you could level one criticism of the Jack Harlow catalog, it is that, conceptually, he could occasionally be a juicy Kentucky nothingburger.

George Jones died 10 years ago today, robbing country music of one of its greatest vocalists. While Jelly Roll may not be the answer to the question of “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes,” the Tennessee singer turned in an admirable rendition of “Bartender’s Blues” on Tuesday night during an all-star tribute concert to Jones in Huntsville, Alabama.
Jelly Roll stayed true to Jones’ version of the song, wrapping his raspy voice around the chorus of needing “four walls around me, to hold my life/to keep me from going astray.
