CBS Films has released the first teaser trailer for Helen Mirren’s spooky “Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built.” Check it out above. The supernatural thriller is based on the life of eccentric heiress Sarah Winchester, who was convinced that she and her family were haunted by the souls killed by the family’s infamous rifle. Her real-life obsession led to the round-the-clock construction of an enormous 160-room mansion in San Jose, California, designed to keep these evil spirits at bay. The film is written and directed by the Spierig brothers and is based on a script first penned by Tom Vaughan.

CBS Films has released the first photo of Helen Mirren in the upcoming supernatural thriller based on the story behind the legendary Winchester Mystery House. Mirren plays Sarah Winchester in the film.
Winchester follows the story of firearm heiress Sarah Winchester (Mirren), "who was convinced that she was haunted by the souls killed at the hands of the Winchester repeating rifle. After the sudden deaths of her husband and child, she threw herself into the 24-hour a day, seven days a week construction of an enormous mansion designed to keep the evil spirits at bay. But when skeptical San Francisco psychiatrist Eric Price is dispatched to the estate to evaluate her state of mind, he discovers that her obsession may not be so insane after all. Winchester will take audiences inside the labyrinth like house that is believed to be one of the most haunted places in the world."

Are we on the cusp of a wave of films related to gun issues? It’s beginning to look that way, and what’s interesting is that there seems to be some variety in genre approach. We’re already seeing trailers for the upcoming Miss Sloane, but while that film is an overtly political take on the subject, Winchester is set to come at the topic from an entirely different angle.
Jason Clarke has signed on in what looks to be a supporting role, opposite Helen Mirren. The Academy Award winning actress will play Sarah Winchester – heiress to the firearms corporation behind the iconic gun, and all the wealth and fortune that brings. While her future should look bright, she is brought low by the concern that the ghosts of those killed by her company’s weaponry are haunting her with evil intent.

Helen Mirren is closing a deal to play conflicted multimillionaire heiress Sarah Winchester in the Michael and Peter Spierig-directed supernatural thriller "Winchester" for Diamond Pictures and Bullitt Entertainment.
The late 19th century-set story is based on the world famous Winchester Mystery House in San Jose. When her husband and child died suddenly, Sarah Winchester became convinced she had been cursed. A medium sent her to San Jose in 1884 to begin a massive 38-year construction of a 160-room Gothic mansion which is now considered one of the most haunted places in the world.
The Spierigs wrote the most recent draft after Tom Vaughan wrote the first draft. Shooting aims to begin later this year in San Jose and Australia.
The news comes as earlier this week Mirren committed to Italian director Paolo Virzì's adaptation of Michael Zadoorian's novel "The Leisure Seeker". Mirren and Donald Sutherland play a runaway...

In Playing House this girl has her eye on the good life with a new Doctor just out of his internship – via riding his best friend from behind in the pool. Playing House is a kind of cross between Single White Female and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. The strength of Playing House is in the performances, Mayra Leal as Blair and Sarah Prikryl as Jen particularly. These women both make the film work very well. Read the full review of Playing House. Playing House is directed by Tom Vaughan (Unstoppable) and stars Shelley Calene-Black (Dark Water), Alex Dorman, Mayra Leal (Machete) and Mari E. Ferguson.

If there's one thing I will never grow tired of, it's the psycho-bitch/bastard genre of horror. Yes you heard that correctly, it's a two way street my friends. For some reason, films that showcase the insane psyche of a jealous, murderous and mentally ill boyfriend or girlfriend are some of the most entertaining films in history. Not greatest films mind you--but entertaining, oh yes. What is it about these films that tickles so many of us? My best educated guess is that these films read like Soap Operas except with tons of blood and stabbing. They are everything that we wanted Soap Operas to be plus more, which by most calculations equals winning. Playing House therefore is mostly winning with a few small exceptions that can be glossed over thanks to some superb craziness.

*full disclosure: Maya Entertainment provided a DVD screener of this film for review.
**here be some spoilers.
Director: Tom Vaughan.
Writers: Tom Vaughan and Kristy Dobkin.
Playing House is a thriller that was released on DVD June 21st by Maya Entertainment and this title was developed for distribution by American World Pictures. This is Uv Pictures first feature film, Tom Vaughan's first film and also writer Kristy Dobkins' first feature. So, viewers can understand that there will be some growing pains in this picture. However, there are lots of positives here, as a resident doctor invites one too many people to stay at his large house in the outskirts of Los Angeles. That extra person brings her sexuality to the party and some very sharp knives. The result is a pretty average, predictable erotic thriller that produces a combination of some highs and lows.
Blair (Mayra Leal) is a young seductress with a past.

This has to be a joke. So spoke one incredibly discontented viewer. That doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of this abject failure. To truly capture this attempt, that promises to haunt everyone involved and justifiably derail their careers, it seems appropriate to say that if writer/director Tom Vaughan never directed again, it would be too soon. There's unfortunately so little to review in such a depressingly poor film.
Perhaps the film’s biggest shortcoming is the director’s obvious inability to work with actors and the actors’ subsequent lack of understanding of their characters and scenes. What the movie smacks of is self-flattery. The movie that young filmmakers made with their friends in formative years, where they thought they could believably portray adults and that just getting the lines out was acting. Fortunately, many of those eager youngsters stuck with it, studied and learned, and became the maestros of today.
