While the live-action of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender may be making headlines as one of the newest adaptations from a property from the past, the original animated series to this day has one of the most loyal and vocal fanbase out of any other, and for good reason.
Sure enough, making such a beloved piece of entertainment wasn’t an easy feat by any means, but since the end product was so exceptionally amazing, people were curious to know just how much went into bringing the vision to life.

In a twist of fate that can only be described as ‘life imitated art,’ Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko’s Avatar: The Last Airbender nearly met its demise after Season 2. The makers of the show battled against all odds to keep their creation alive, just as Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
Fans of Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series have grown to love it since the show’s final episode aired more than ten years ago (2008). During the course of its three seasons, the show gained recognition for its intricate plot and weighty themes, all the while maintaining an enjoyable and intriguing viewing experience.

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender are familiar with the series’ complex characters, intricate storytelling, and powerful themes of redemption and self-discovery. One of the characters who enraptured viewers with her cunning intelligence and deadly skills was Azula, the powerful and ruthless Princess of the Fire Nation.
And, according to head writer Aaron Ehasz, Azula was supposed to embark on a redemption arc in the potential fourth season that has yet to come to fruition. Indeed, in April 2019, Ehasz shocked the fandom and gave them a glimpse of what could have been in the upcoming season. He therefore revealed on his personal Twitter that a fourth season of the show was once considered.
Azula in Avatar: The Last Airbender
The main plot point that Ehasz addressed was Azula, Zuko’s rival and vicious, power-hungry sister. After being defeated by Zuko and Katara, she was left in chains at the end of the third season.

During the three seasons, fans got to see their favorite characters evolve as they faced the many challenges that came their way. As multiple storylines came and went, fans had varying opinions about the way the series played out. However, the one thing they all loved was Zuko’s redemption arc.

This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender.
It’s easy to call every main character in the original Avatar: The Last Airbender a fan favorite but master Earthbender Toph Beifong deserves special mention because she earned that status with only 2/3’s of the screen time. Introduced near the start of season two, she won over the hearts of viewers the moment she mocked “The Boulder,” a big and brutish fighter, with the sickest nickname ever: “The Pebble.” How could you not love this small girl who just destroys someone with two words and backs it up with the most impressive Earthbending yet seen in the series?
Toph quickly established herself as a core part of the cast, also notable for her status as a rare blind lead character in television. She even invented an entire form of bending all her own! With Toph being such an important character,...

With the arrival of Netflix live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, interest has been reignited in the original animated series. While the series is often hailed a near sacred classic, there’s always a big “what if” among fans. What if there had been more? The original show did end with some loose threads after all. What would it have been like if Avatar had continued into a fourth season, one which would have likely been themed around the element of Air.

"The Dragon Prince" has quickly grown into a clear spiritual successor to "Avatar: The Last Airbender," an animated show with a vast and complex world and mythology, as well as an epic scope that helped it become one of the best fantasy stories on TV, including live-action.
After the first three seasons told a complete chapter in the saga, ending with the start of a new era in the fantasy world of the show, season 4 jumped forward in time and kickstarted a new chapter. Dubbed the Mystery of Aaravos arc, most of that season was spent on table setting for the new status quo, the changed dynamics between elves and humans, and building up the show's primordial villain — the Archmage and Startouch Elf Aaravos.

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is one of the best animated shows of all time. When I said this back in 2008, it may have been a statement that my middle school peers pretty much universally agreed on, but it wasn't exactly a mainstream notion among grown-up tastemakers. But in the years since the kids' show has gone off the air, praise for its mature and empathetic worldview, unique mythology, and delightful animation and voice cast has only continued to grow exponentially. By the time the series hit streaming in 2020, it felt like "Avatar: The Last Airbender" was becoming the phenomenon it was always meant to be, and it was no surprise when news of a whole host of new projects from Avatar Studios soon followed.
For a fan who grew up alongside Aang, Zuko, Sokka, Katara, and Toph, it's easy to forget that the series wasn't always a part of the...

(Welcome to My Most Ridiculous Note, a series of interviews in which animators talk about the weirdest and funniest notes they received from studio executives.)
Well folks, this is a special occasion. For a while now, we've been publishing interviews with animators who worked on some of the most beloved cartoons of the '90s and '00s, exploring what went into making those stories stand apart from their contemporaries, from the Christmas episode of "Hey Arnold" to the classic "Nosferatu" joke in "SpongeBob SquarePants."
We've also explored the bizarre, over-the-top notes that studio executives, as well as Standards & Practices folks, have given to animators. There have been stories of ridiculous notes, sensible ones, and everything in between, but this interview series has (understandably so) focused on the side of the animators who try to get their work out and are met with some roadblocks. This time around, however, we're...

While everyone was fighting over which live-action fantasy show is the best — the one with the rings and the steamy hot sexual tension, or the one with the incest and the dragons that are basically nuclear weapons — the conversations tended to forget that there is another fantasy epic coming out this fall, one with elves and dragons and political scheming of its own.
That's right: Now that the first season of both "House of the Dragon" and "Rings of Power" are over, it's time for the animated series "The Dragon Prince" to shine. A sort of spiritual successor to "Avatar: The Last Airbender" (in craft and tone more than story), "The Dragon Prince" hasn't reached the level of popularity of that Nickelodeon show, but is just as compelling. The show has a vast world that feels lived-in, with a deep and complex mythology, phenomenal production designs, and fascinating characters.

Take a look at new footage from the Wonderstorm Cpu-animated, fantasy TV series "The Dragon Prince" Season 3, created by Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond, streaming November 22, 2019 on Netflix:
"...the continent of 'Xadia' is rich with magic derived from the six primal elements, the 'Sun', the 'Moon', the 'Stars', the 'Earth', the 'Sky' and the 'Ocean'. However, the humans—who could not utilize primal magic—discovered the use of dark magic, fueled by the life essence of animals and magical creatures.
"As a consequence, humans were driven off by the dragons and elves of Xadia to the other end of the continent, where they founded the five human kingdoms. 'The Breach', the border between the two halves of the continent, is guarded by 'Thunder', the king of the dragons.
"1,200 years later, humans killed the dragon king and supposedly destroyed his heir's egg.

Former head writer Aaron Ehasz gives us previously unheard details of what Avatar Season 4 would have contained.
Back in April the former head writer of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aaron Ehasz sent shockwaves through the Atla fan community. While the original series had ended with three seasons Ehasz revealed on his personal twitter that at one point a fourth season of the series was briefly considered.
The only major plot point he discussed was the character of Azula and that he had always planned for her to have a redemption arc. In her deepest and darkest moment she would have turned to Zuko for help, paralleling his own journey out of darkness. He also said that one of the reasons season 4 didn’t happen was that Atla co-creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko were focusing on The Last Airbender film directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

The creators of The Dragon Prince detail why their mission wasn't to own fandom but just be a part of it.
Corporate social media in 2019 is an odd beast. It’s either boring press release information with room for a few fan retweets, a public realations firm trying their best to be cool, or it’s meme central 24/7 to the point of absurdity. For offical TV series accounts it’s pretty much the same. But not for The Dragon Prince.
The Dragon Prince’s social media accounts are a delight without feeling like that infamous screenshot of Steve Buscemi from 30 Rock where he says, “how do you do, fellow kids?” It’s filled not so much with memes but playfully jokey content. It doesn’t feel like a corporate entity spitting out news but almost like an actual fan of the show is running the account.

The Dragon Prince's upcoming books from Scholastic promise to not be your standard tie-in fare.
A lot of tie-in books for children’s media are fairly disposable. They aren’t always bad, they just don’t often scream out as something for hardcore fans to pick up. They’re usually basic chapter books rigidly adapting episodes, sparse picture guides, or other pieces of content that feel less essential than their source material.
The Dragon Prince’s tie-in books are planning to be must reads for hardcore fans. As announced at San Diego Comic-Con, The Dragon Prince team has entered into a licensing deal with Scholastic to publish novels, graphic novels, and guidebooks for the series. According to show creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond, these books won’t be throw away titles.

Netflix has announced that they are producing a new animated fantasy series called The Dragon Prince. They also released a poster for the series which you can see in full below. This actually sounds like a promising show as it comes from the writer of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aaron Ehasz, and the director of hit video game franchise Uncharted, Justin Richmond.
We learned from the announcement that the story will center around "two human princes who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands."
Sounds pretty awesome and something that I'd enjoy watching. The original series will make an appearance at Comic-Con next week on July 21st. Ehasz, Richmond and executive producer Giancarlo Volpe (Atla) will offer a sneak peek and an inside look into the epic fantasy tale.

Written by Dave Roman and Alison Wilgus and illustrated by Nina Matsumoto, the manga-influenced comic leads directly into M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming big-screen adaptation of the hit animated series. "Zuko's Story" chronicles the initial travels of the Fire Nation's exiled prince (played by Dev Patel in the film) as he begins his quest to locate the Avatar, a person capable of controlling all four of the world's elements.
Our preview of "The Last Airbender Prequel: Zuko's Story" generated so many comments from readers that we decided to follow up with one of the book's writers, Dave Roman, to get some answers to the burning questions on fans' minds.
