In Cheer, Navarro College head coach Monica Aldama works with her team for months to get ready for nationals. But how does such a talented and dynamic group get put together in the first place?
It’s no question that trying out for the world’s most famous cheerleading squad can be scary, to say the least — especially since only 40 people, a lot of whom are returning members, make the team each year. But Aldama tries to make the process as comfortable as possible. “I've always been very big on trying to make the tryouts feel very laid-back so that the person that is trying out can be more relaxed,” Aldama says. “A lot of times, they're very nervous and sometimes even intimidated, because they're coming into this college environment and into a team that's really good.”
And “really good” is an understatement. The Navarro Bulldogs are a beast in...

Monica Aldama‘s son Austin Aldama, has been arrested on child pornography charges.
You may recognize the 51-year-old as the coach of the co-ed cheerleading team at Navarro College, which was the subject of a Netflix TV docu-series titled Cheer.
Aldama‘s son, who is 27 years old, was arrested for 10 counts of possession of pornographic images of children, TMZ is reporting. He was booked, but has been released on bond under stipulations including random drug testing, random searches to his electronic devices, and prohibited viewing of any X-rated material.
Prosecutors are saying they have evidence of materials featuring children under the age of 10 in video files.
This is not the first child pornography case to hit the Navarro area. Jerry Harris, who starred in Cheer, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for child pornography.

Monica Aldama, the cheerleading coach from Netflix‘s docuseries Cheer, has revealed that a lawsuit accusing her of covering up sexual assault has been dismissed. The lawsuit stemmed from a cheerleader who claimed that Aldama, squad members, and school staff at Navarro College discouraged her from filing a report after she says she was sexually assaulted by a team member during her first semester. She also claimed that Aldama told her, “If you keep quiet, I’ll make sure you can cheer anywhere you want.” Aldama denied the accusations at the time and has now revealed that the lawsuit against her has been dropped. On Saturday, November 11, the coach shared a lengthy Instagram post where she opened up about what she’s been dealing with for the past six months. “It’s 10:00 pm and I am just finding my voice today. I have been at a loss for words since 9:00 am this morning,...

Everyone loves an underdog, but it’s possible nobody loves one more than Greg Whiteley. With Netflix hits “Cheer” and “Last Chance U,” the documentarian trained his eye on undergraduate athletes whose programs lack the resources or respect of a Big Ten institution. Each show made a compelling case for its subjects’ skill, tenacity and right to a bigger spotlight; “Cheer,” in particular, made stars of its protagonists, a charismatic squad of Texas students who performed death-defying stunts with a smile.
The second season of “Cheer” was forced to reckon with the fallout of its own success, taking some focus away from its namesake sport to address squad member Jerry Harris’ being sentenced to prison for soliciting sex from minors, as well as coach Monica Aldama’s stint on “Dancing With the Stars” and the uncomfortable transition from challenger to heavy favorite. Thankfully, Whiteley’s latest effort offers a fresh start.

“Wait, the name at the top of this website reads ‘Den of Geek’ and now they’re talking about sports? Don’t they know I’m gangly and uncoordinated?”
Yes, dear reader, we know that. Truth is, we’re all gangly and uncoordinated as well. But that doesn’t mean that we geeks can’t occasionally get together and enjoy the dramatic majesty of competitive sports. Sports documentaries have always been a part of the entertainment ecosystem. Of late, however, it seems as though there’s more of them for the casual sports fan or even fully sports-phobic TV-watcher to enjoy.
ESPN’s “30 for 30” sports documentary initiative kicked off a new era of TV sports documentaries in 2009. And since then, the offerings have only gotten better. With streamers like Netflix fully into the fray there have never been as many compelling sports stories being told as there is right now.

A former cheerleader for Navarro College says she was sexually assaulted by a fellow, male cheerleader in September 2021 and has filed a lawsuit.
The Bulldogs squad is considered legendary by many in the cheerleading world, its notoriety amplified by the Netflix docuseries “Cheer”, which ran for two seasons.
Allegations detailed in the 20-page lawsuit filed in a Dallas court include: an overall culture of abuse, violence, hazing, and cover-ups within the program. It names the cheerleader’s alleged attacker, the college and head coach Monica Aldama.
According to the lawsuit, the former cheerleader called Aldama and told her about the assault.
“Let’s not make this a big deal,” Aldama said, according to the lawsuit. “I want the best for you and I will help you cheer wherever you want.” She then hung up.

The college that was seen on Cheer, the Netflix docuseries following the cheer team in Texas, is once again in the news. Navarro College, with head coach Monica Aldama (who became known following the aforementioned show on the streaming service and went on to compete on Dancing With the Stars), director of athletics Michael Landers, Title IX coordinator Elizabeth Pillans, and the person accused named, is being sued for allegedly concealing a student’s sexual assault in fall 2021, Entertainment Weekly reports after reading a complaint filed on April 26. According to the lawsuit, the student is accusing one of the male members of the cheer squad, invited over by her roommate when she was sleeping, of climbing into her bed. She said, according to the report, “that she tried to call for help and eventually was able to push him away.” She also claimed that among those who told her not...

Photo: Cheer Season 2 ‘Cheer’ season 2 is doing what many other shows cannot, evolving without completely reinventing. Perhaps this is thanks to the competitive nature and premise of the show, a drama series about competitive cheerleading, and the amount of surprising skill and dedication that goes into perfecting the sport. And yes, the characters and creators classify the bone-tiring, technique-dependent, and highly competitive actions of the protagonist cheerleaders as a sport. Especially with new prestigious spots opening up on the team, the fighting for said coveted spot gets fiercer as the season progresses. The production team has to not only consider this but also find an accurate and realistic way to capture the past two years of the careers and lives of the different rosters. The new roster includes Jerry Harris, Lexi Brumback, Gabi Butler, Monica Aldama and Morgan Simianer who are all various athletes competing on the show. Related article:...

Rival Texas schools Navarro College and Trinity Valley Community College each were paid $30,000 for their participation in the second season of Netflix’s “Cheer,” a price that was set in the initial location fee agreement between Navarro and the show’s production company before “Cheer” became a smash-hit streaming sensation.
As first reported by Variety‘s sister site Sportico, “In 2018, Navarro signed a deal with a production company in which the school agreed to be paid $30,000 for the rights to film a season of a then-untitled cheerleading documentary, according to a copy of the rights agreement obtained by Sportico.”
The pact has a built-in exclusive option for “Cheer” producers to renew at the same $30,000 fee each year for five additional academic years, giving the production company “exclusive rights to film and exploit the Cheerleading Athletics as part of the Series” during the contract’s term period.

The Cheer producers have some explaining to do. Season two of the docuseries premiered on Netflix last week, reuniting viewers with faces old and new. Among the newcomers are the cheerleaders from Trinity Valley Community College, which is located about 40 miles down the road from Corsicana, Tex., where Monica Aldama and the bulldogs train. The Tvcc Cardinals are coached by Vontae Johnson, a footballer-turned-cheerleader with a no-nonsense attitude. He is joined by assistant coach Khris Franklin, as well as team leaders Jada Wooten and Jeron Hazelwood. Together, they've trained to become one of Navarro's fiercest competitors at the National Cheerleaders Association's...

A far less interesting version of “Cheer” Season 2 would have ignored how much of a phenomenon the show immediately became upon its January 2020 debut. Weeks before the pandemic brought most of the world to an unsettling halt, Netflix’s docuseries was an unavoidable smash hit, making overnight celebrities of its Texan cheerleader subjects whether they wanted the spotlight or not. They went on “Ellen,” “Dancing with the Stars,” and the Oscars red carpet. They became Instagram influencers and TikTok stars. They became characters both relatable and aspirational for millions of viewers across the world who suddenly felt incredibly invested in the results of a cheerleading competition. In its second season, “Cheer” could’ve just followed that story all over again, yielding decent results. It could’ve gone the “Tiger King 2” route, only briefly acknowledging the series’ impact before reverting back to old storytelling habits. Instead, both by choice and by wild circumstance,...

After two long years, Netflix's Cheer is back with more stunts, drama, and a new competitor. On Tuesday, the streamer casually dropped a trailer for the second season, which officially debuts on Jan. 12, 2022. By the looks of it, the upcoming nine episodes give us an update on Navarro Cheer - and its head coach Monica Aldama and star members like Gabi Butler, LA'Darius Marshall, Lexi Brumback, and Morgan Simianer - and how they've dealt with their newfound fame, Covid-19-related challenges, and a rival team fighting just as hard for the Daytona championship.
The trailer also offers a look at how the team is moving forward after a serious allegation against former team member and Cheer breakout star Jerry Harris. Harris was arrested in September 2020 on a federal child pornography charge and faces seven additional counts of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Netflix is bringing Cheer back for a second season.
The streamer announced Monday that a surprise second season would arrive Wednesday, January 12.
While the series was a hit, a renewal was not guaranteed after it emerged that Jerry Harris, a star of the first season, was arrested on federal sexual misconduct charges in September 2020.
The first trailer for the new season confirms that the series will not be sidestepping the controversy.
“I can’t even, like, process it right now,” coach Monica Aldama says in the first footage.
Cheer director Greg Whiteley said in a press release that the series will touch upon many stories this time.
“I am a huge believer in the power of stories and telling them honestly,” he shared in a statement.
“I believe the story is going to ultimately be the best version of itself when you are honoring what is true, and you’re not running from it.

Netflix‘s Emmy-winning docuseries Cheer is returning for a second season on January 12. The series, which premiered in January 2020, follows the cheerleading team and staff from Navarro College in Texas. The first season focused on coach Monica Aldama and members of her team, in particular, Lexi Brumback, La’Darius Marshall, Morgan Simianer, Jerry Harris, and Gabi Butler. As seen in the trailer (watch below), the new season will cover Harris’s arrest and its effect on the team. Last year, Harris was arrested for multiple federal sexual misconduct charges, including soliciting child pornography. Season 2 will confront these allegations, including interviews with the brothers who first came forward about Harris. The series will again focus on Aldama, Brumback, Butler, Marshall, and Simianer, as well as new Navarro competitors. In addition, attention will be given to Navarro arch-rival Trinity Valley Community College, highlighting their coach, Vontae Johnson, and his assistant coach Khris Franklin and members of that squad.

A lot has happened since Netflix first introduced the world to Navarro College’s cheerleading squad in “Cheer.” The docuseries won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Structured Reality Program, as well as legions of fans taken with the grit, determination, and optimism of the student athletes. There was the Covid-19 pandemic, which brought filming on the second season to a halt in 2020. But there were also the federal sexual misconduct allegations brought against Season 1 breakout star Jeremy Harris. Now, a trailer for the long-delayed second season seems to show that the series will address the fallout of those allegations head on.

Variety can exclusively reveal that on Jan. 12, Netflix will drop a second season of “Cheer,” its Emmy-winning docuseries about the cheerleading team from Navarro College. Season 1, which premiered in January 2020, turned Navarro coach Monica Aldama and members of her team — especially Lexi Brumback, La’Darius Marshall, Morgan Simianer, Jerry Harris and (the already well-known) Gabi Butler — into celebrities, both for better and for worse. Last year, Harris was arrested for multiple federal sexual misconduct charges, including soliciting child pornography. According to Netflix, “Cheer” deals with the allegations against Harris up front, and in an episode that focuses on the misconduct accusations, the brothers who first came forward about Harris are interviewed.
Among other elements of the season, the trailer for the second season shows Harris’ teammates — and Aldama — dealing with the aftermath of his arrest. “I can’t even, like, process it right now,” Aldama says.

It’s been nearly two years since Tom Bergeron last hosted “Dancing with the Stars,” but that doesn’t mean every longtime fan has moved on like he has. The beloved host fields frequent comments and questions about his departure, especially now that we’re less than a week away from “Dancing’s” Season 30 premiere, and his quick-witted sense of humor remains intact.
On Monday, a fan, replying to one of Bergeron’s tweets that had nothing to do with the ABC series, tweeted, “Tom why did you leave DWTS your replacement is horrible. I will not watch the show till you return. I’m sure I’m not the only one that wants you back.”

It’s not a “Dancing with the Stars” finale without the season’s eliminated celebrities returning, but it won’t be a full house this time. All but one star will be in attendance for Monday’s show: Carole Baskin.
It’s nothing scandalous: The “Tiger King” star returned to Florida after her Week 2 elimination and can’t travel to L.A. because of Covid-19 restrictions, according to “Entertainment Tonight.”
All of the other 10 axed stars will be back in the ballroom, including Jeannie Mai, who withdrew from the show on Nov. 2 after undergoing emergency surgery for epiglottitis, a potentially life-threatening condition in which the cartilage over the windpipe becomes inflamed. The other nine are Charles Oakley, Anne Heche, Jesse Metcalfe, Vernon Davis, Monica Aldama, Chrishell Stause, Aj McLean, Johnny Weir and Skai Jackson.

Jeannie Mai has withdrawn from “Dancing with the Stars” after being hospitalized with epiglottitis.

Epiglottitis is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the epiglottis, a cartilage over the windpipe, becomes inflamed and causes, among other things, a blockage of air to the lungs.
