"Will you love him like we love him?" "Will you actually make time for us?" Republic Pictures / Paramount Movies has revealed the trailer for an indie film titled The Young Wife, the second feature film made by filmmaker Tayarisha Poe, after Selah and the Spades from Sundance 2019. This new one premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival last year, and it will finally be out on VOD at the end of this month to watch. On her wedding day, all that stands between a young woman named Celestina and marital bliss with her soon-to-be husband (played by the singer / songwriter Leon Bridges) is surviving the chaos and expectations of family and friends, each intensifying her spiraling panic. It's a story about marriage and all that comes with it, good and bad. Starring Kiersey Clemons as Celestina, with Kelly Marie Tran & Michaela Watkins. Reviews are mixed, though they do say that "The...

Is anyone really ready to get married, let alone commit?
Tayarisha Poe’s new film, “The Young Wife,” asks and answers the age-old question and more, with Kiersey Clemons starring as a young woman whose “non-wedding” to her elusive partner (Leon Bridges) brings out all the pressures of a traditional union. The chaos and expectations of family and friends heighten the not-quite-bride’s spiraling panic, and all seems poised to unravel just before the party meant to celebrate their love.
Sheryl Lee Ralph, Judith Light, Kelly Marie Tran, Aya Cash, and Michaela Watkins co-star. Poe writes and directs her follow-up to 2019 Sundance debut “Selah and the Spades.”
“The Young Wife” premiered at SXSW 2023, where it was picked up by distributor Republic Pictures, a Paramount Pictures label. “I’m excited to share the work of our wonderful cast and crew,” Poe told IndieWire. “For me this is a story of color and chaos,...

Stars: Justice Smith, David Alan Grier, An-Li Bogan, Drew Tarver, Michaela Watkins, Aisha Hinds, Tim Baltz, Rupert Friend, Nicole Byer | Written and Directed by Kobi Libii
The debut feature from writer-director Kobi Libii, this blackly comic fantasy comedy has a solid central idea, but never quite gets to grips with its own satirical intent. Ultimately, it works better as an offbeat romantic comedy, thanks to an engaging central performance and charming chemistry between the two leads.
Justice Smith stars as Aaron Mbondo, an artist in Los Angeles whose yarn sculptures aren’t quite cutting it with the art gallery crowd. After a painful show, during which he’s mistaken for a waiter, insult is added to injury when he’s nearly beaten up by some white guys who think he’s a mugger. However, he’s rescued at the last minute by Roger (David Alan Grier), a server he recognises from the gallery.

Actors Michaela Watkins and Dan Bakkedahl reminisce about the filming of their new show Dinner with the Parents in their new uInterview.
Dinner with the Parents follows the escapades of two Langer brothers in their twenties who regularly attend dinner at their parents’ house – the family gathers every week for dinner, only to find themselves filled with remorse afterward. The show amusingly portrays their weekly family gatherings’ chaotic and disastrous nature.
“Dan makes me spit-take, genuinely,” Watkins told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “I just don’t see it coming, and he knocks me sideways with comedy. I mean, I laugh a lot. I was watching the episodes, and I was going, ‘Okay, it’s not just me.’ My husband and I were just cracking up.”
She told Bakkedahl, “I remember the episodes where you had the hot wings, and you’re not feeling well and sweating, and you’re about to throw up.

American TV bosses obviously didn’t learn many lessons from “Episodes,” the Showtime/BBC co-production which brilliantly skewered the habit of adapting British sitcoms, and removing all nuances, subtleties, and idiosyncrasies in the process. In the 13 years since its premiere, there’s been numerous failed pilots (“Spy”), ratings disasters (“Free Agents”), and entire series considered unfit for public consumption (“Us and Them”) which originated across the pond. Now the most singular UK comedy of the 2010s is going transatlantic.
The BAFTA-nominated “Friday Night Dinner” — which served up 37 episodes from 2011-2020 —stemmed from creator Robert Popper’s real-life secular Jewish family and their weekly Shabbat meals, explaining why everything from its suburban London home to its lovable oddballs feels so wonderfully specific. Disappointingly, Amazon Freevee’s “Dinner with the Parents” is as generic as its title.
The 10-part series on Freevee does attempt to retain some of the original’s quirks.

Almost everyone knows what it’s like, the concept of Dinner with the Parents, but Amazon Freevee is taking the idea and raising it a few notches for this chaotically hilarious new comedy arriving April 18. In an exclusive first look at the series, the trailer, above, offers a glimpse into the Friday night gatherings of the closely-knit Langer family made up of mom Jane (Michaela Watkins), dad Harvey (Dan Bakkedahl), nana Rose (Carol Kane), and sons David (Henry Hall) and Gregg (Daniel Thrasher). “This show is so much fun to make because we get to push the limits of what a family comedy can be — how flawed the characters, how fast the pace, how far things escalate,” series showrunner and executive producer Jon Beckerman tells TV Insider. “We’re hoping that, when people watch it, they’ll think, ‘This family is bonkers. But I wish it was mine.'” As...

The Groundlings will host an improv musical fundraising event on Oct. 26, featuring Ana Gasteyer, Kristen Bell, Kristen Wiig and Will Forte. The event, held at the Performing Arts Center at Vista Del Mar, will benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund to support below-the-line workers impacted by the strikes.
“One Night Only,” created and directed by Groundlings Main Company member Andrew Leeds, is a full production of a well-known Broadway musical. The catch? The improvisers are given the script and their roles only 24 hours in advance.
“These strikes have taken a terrible toll on our amazing crews, and it isn’t over yet. Even with the WGA strike ending, most crew members won’t be able to start work again until the SAG-AFTRA deal is ratified,” Leeds said in a statement. “Even then, many will be fighting to survive as they wait for productions to start back up.

At last weekend’s “Women Behind the Words” panel at the Nantucket Film Festival, panelists Allison Williams, Nicole Holofcener, and Michaela Watkins opened up about the dismissiveness and disrespect that they’ve experienced as women in film and TV. Williams talked about how viewers, social media users, and even journalists conflated the “Girls” actresses with their characters. And Holofcener talked about how a prominent industry figure told her to stop writing.
But the most striking remark unfolded when Williams talked about an incident of on-set disrespect she experienced in the years leading up to her breakout success on “Girls.”

Filmmaker Nicole Holofcener understands why women-focused film panels are still needed, due to the continued under-representation of women behind the camera — which she herself alluded to on just such a panel at the Nantucket Film Festival this past weekend — but she still hopes that the day will come when women-focused film panels can stop.
“I’m very grateful to be here,” Holofcener said during the panel, titled “Women Behind the Words,” and which also included Allison Williams and Michaela Watkins as fellow panelists. “And I’m very proud to be a woman, but I feel like that has to stop. We have to stop this. We’re just actors and writers and performers.”
Those remarks were prompted by the panel’s moderator, Ophira Eisenberg, saying that, in the industry, “There’s this feeling that you’re going to be judged first as a woman and second as a writer or director or artist.

Allison Williams attended the Nantucket Film Festival this past weekend and joined a fascinating panel alongside Nicole Holofcener and Michaela Watkins, moderated by Ophira Eisenberg and sponsored by J.Crew, called “Women Behind the Words.”
Williams talked at length about the way she and actresses in general can be perceived by the public, have been written about by journalists, and have been trolled on social media — and whether anything has changed in the six years since “Girls” ended.
“People kind of thought the four of us were in a documentary about girls in our 20s when we were actors acting in a show,” Williams said. “Whereas I think some of the men in our show got a lot of credit, as they deserved, for their performances, for playing characters as actors, whereas it took people a couple years to be like, ‘Oh, she’s not Marnie.’ And I was like,...

[The following story contains spoilers from You Hurt My Feelings.]
When Julia Louis-Dreyfus heard the concept behind her new movie You Hurt My Feelings, it immediately resonated with her.
The project, from writer-director Nicole Holofcener, with whom Louis-Dreyfus worked on the 2013 film Enough Said, follows Louis-Dreyfus’ author character, Beth, as she’s working on a new novel, which her longtime husband, Don (Tobias Menzies), has been telling her he adores, when she overhears Don say that he actually doesn’t like the book.
“Oh, bam! That is huge,” Louis-Dreyfus recalled thinking. “Because as a creative person, the idea that somebody would lie to you on such a fundamental level about something so personal, that spoke to me. That was more interesting to me than an infidelity, for example.”
The impact of the criticism is heightened by the fact that, as viewers learn, Beth’s father was also particularly harsh toward her, with him being characterized early...

Plot: A fragile author (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) in a seemingly idyllic marriage falls apart when she realizes that her husband (Tobias Menzies) dislikes her new book.
Review: When you’re in a relationship, telling little white lies to spare your partner’s feelings is often necessary. The same is true with any relationship, be it between a parent and child, two friends, two colleagues, and more. Honesty isn’t always the best policy. In her latest film You Hurt My Feelings, writer-director Nicole Holofcener zeroes in on an incredibly happy marriage. She’s an author with some (but not a ton) of success, while he’s a (mostly successful) psychiatrist. She’s written her first piece of fiction, and he told her he loved it, but she overhears him saying to a friend that he was lying and that it’s simply “not for him.” It’s mild criticism, but she...

Hey, who says we can’t enjoy a quirky NYC-based character comedy written and directed by one of our lauded indie directors? We’ve got the big fairy tale musical, the turbo-charged thriller, and the new MCU entry, so the blockbuster fanatics have their choices, but happily, there’s room for something a little quieter and more clever. It’s hard to believe we’ve not gotten a feature from this filmmaker in nearly five years. Welcome back! And bonus, it reunites her with the star of a terrific romantic comedy from ten years ago. Yes, there’s a romance at the center of this, but the title reveals it has a bit of a “darker edge” as the lead bemoans to her on-screen hubby, You Hurt My Feelings.
That “proclaimer” is Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who lives with her hubby Don (Tobias Menzies) in one of the Big Apple’s trendiest neighborhoods.

There’s a comfort witnessing characters in a Nicole Holofcener film discuss banal, everyday topics—ones largely absent in cinema. In her latest, You Hurt My Feelings, sisters Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Sarah (Michaela Watkins) discuss throwing out old underwear: one does, one doesn’t. Sarah’s husband Mark (Succession’s Arian Moayed) obsesses over moisture-wicking socks. And when Sarah and Beth find themselves stuck standing next to actor Josh Pais (playing himself) after a play, Beth asks how he commutes to the theater each night—turns out he Ubers.
These trademark Holofcener moments are peppered throughout a narrative kicked off when Beth is sent spiraling after she overhears her husband Don (Tobias Menzies) reveal that he doesn’t like her new novel. This news threatens to derail an otherwise loving marriage—a marriage so loving, their son Eliot (Owen Teague) wonders aloud why he often feels like a “third wheel” when with them.

You know Michaela Watkins, right? She was on “Saturday Night Live” and was the star of “Casual” and “Enlightened.” You’ve heard her voice work on “Big Mouth” and “Robot Chicken,” and she was in indie gems like “In a World,” “Sword of Trust,” and “Thanks for Sharing.” You know her from somewhere.
“I get to work all the time, and nobody really knows who I am,” she recently told IndieWire. And, as Watkins makes clear, that’s no complaint. She’s got a great acting career, one that started quite late by Hollywood standards. A former member of improv troupe The Groundlings, she spent a decade bumping around in single-episode, minor-role stints before spending a year as an “SNL” featured player in 2008.
From there, she spent a season on “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” starring opposite another former SNL star, Julia Louis-Dreyfus — who’s now her co-star in...

Douglas Booth, Alison Pill and Iris Apatow have joined an adaptation of the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe classic “The Sorrows of Young Werther.”
The film, simply titled “Young Werther,” is produced by Toronto-based film and TV outfit Wildling Pictures, which describes the project as a modern retelling of the book.
Booth (“That Dirty Black Bag”) and Pill (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”) will take lead roles, with Apatow (“The Bubble”) also set to star along Patrick J. Adams (“Suits”). Production will begin this month in Toronto.
Drawing from Goethe’s passionate personal accounts, which were first published in letter form in 1774, “Young Werther” is the story of a charmingly irresponsible and enthusiastic young man named Werther (Booth) who finds himself at the mercy of Charlotte (Pill), whose allure and commitment to her impressive fiancé Albert turns Werther’s life upside down.
The project marks the feature directorial debut for José...

Signature Entertainment has snapped up U.K. and Ireland rights to Julia Louis-Dreyfus comedy “You Hurt My Feelings” from FilmNation Entertainment.
Directed by Nicole Holofcener, the film stars Louis-Dreyfus and Tobias Menzies (“The Crown”) as a couple whose marriage is thrown into turmoil when she overhears his honest reaction to her latest book. The cast also includes Owen Teague, David Cross, Arian Moayed and Michaela Watkins.
It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and will close Sundance London.
Reviewing the film for Variety, critic Owen Gleiberman said: “The key to ‘You Hurt My Feelings’ is that the entire movie turns into a satire of what has become our fetishistically supportive and oversensitive therapeutic culture of positivity. All these things, in a way, are necessary. But maybe, the film suggests, we have tried to heal ourselves a little too much. Maybe we need a little more naked honesty mixed in with the wellness.

Paint is a film written and directed by Brit McAdams starring Owen Wilson.
It is a comedy that boasts the flag of quirkiness, and, in its 60s hippy vibes, it is attractive… for a while.
One of those comedies that, unfortunately, runs out of fuel in its initial approach without having a clear idea to develop.
Paint Movie review
There’s some charm to it as a nostalgic product and as a chance to recall for a while the times in which Forrest Gump found love… to the rhythm of Dolly Parton. It has some style regarding the recreation more than in the interpretation or the story, which don’t want to be memorable at any time.
This film has the dubious merit of being told as it renders the life of this painter, something that ends apparently without leaving any trace, transitioning between light comedy and an acid sense...

The idiom “national treasure” tends to get thrown around quite a bit in the entertainment-journalism sphere, but no one is more worthy of it than Julia Louis-Dreyfus. After all, she’s appeared in two of the greatest television comedies ever in Seinfeld and Veep, cut her teeth on Saturday Night Live, is now a ubiquitous presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and has won the most Primetime Emmys of any actor (eight, tying Cloris Leachman for the distinction).
She’s now mainly focusing her attention to film.
