*Warning — this review contains some spoilers for '73 Yards'*
With last week’s incendiary chamber-piece ‘Boom’, Steven Moffat took Doctor Who back to basics, delivering in the process the first true classic of the show’s latest reboot. Give it some time, and Russell T. Davies’ follow up, '73 Yards', may yet prove to be its second. Emphatically swinging the series’ genre pendulum back from sci-fi to the supernatural, Davies' latest self-penned offering is a deliciously dark, near-Doctorless diversion into folk horror territory. Eerie, elegiac, and ambiguous almost to a fault, it's a properly haunting tale that’s destined to be talked about, debated, and theorised upon for years to come.
Right from the get-go, it’s clear this isn’t going to be your average episode of Doctor Who. A pointed lack of opening titles adds an extra chill to ‘73 Yards’’s cold open, which sees the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa...

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who episode “73 Yards”.
Doctor-Lite stories have so far been very good, which raises the possibility that the thing that′s really holding back Doctor Who is Doctor Who.
As you may know, Ncuti Gatwa was finishing filming his last series of Sex Education for Netflix while “73 Yards” was being filmed, and so the episode was pushed onto the array of ′Doctor-Lite′ stories (put simply: ones in which the Doctor doesn′t appear very much). The idea of doubling up the filming of episodes and balancing the cast accordingly has been in place since the show returned in 2005, with it formally being named as a budget-saving strategy in 2007 with “Blink”. They may also be referred to as “double-banking” episodes where two episodes are filmed simultaneously and so the regular cast can’t substantially appear in both.

Millie Gibson this weekend offered her heartfelt thoughts on the Doctor Who episode that stirred opinions in fans of the long-running sci-fi franchise.
The “fifth” episode (including “The Church on Ruby Road”) of “Season 1” (or Season 14) opened with the Doctor (played by Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby Sunday (Gibson) setting foot in Wales, immediately after which the former accidentally stepped his foot on a fairy circle comprised of string, charms and notes. Witchcraft ensued, abruptly disappearing the Doctor and leaving Ruby tethered to a mysterious and spooky af old woman who always stood exactly 73 yards away.

“It’s the first comedic thriller I’ve ever done. A lot of the projects that I’ve done in the past have been very black and white; they’re heroic, they’re drama, they’re rom-com, and you always know who the antagonist is and you know who you’re supposed to be rooting for,” declares “Based on a True Story” composer Sherri Chung. For our recent webchat she adds, “This was a story where we don’t know if should we be rooting for this guy, is this guy as bad as he said, as bad as we think he is, is he as good as we think he is? The challenge musically was that you don’t want to give it away. You don’t want to telegraph what the audience doesn’t know yet. You don’t want to ruin the fun of them trying to...

The chic balconies of Marseille certainly offer an image that is photogenic enough to open Noémie Merlant’s sophomore feature, The Balconettes, especially as seen from the meandering perspective of a crane shot. As the camera traces facades and their baby-blue window blinds, we’re perhaps reminded of Rear Window. Yet small figures of women and men try to cope with the heat and we, as spectators, have the privileged viewpoint into their flats. On one of those balconies, a woman is being beaten for what seems to be the thousandth time. But now she fights back. This is only the beginning of a film that will blend comedy and supernatural horror tropes to show the many ways women can look after one another in the face of violence.
The Balconettes is Merlant’s second feature as a director, following several shorts and the 2021 Cannes entry Mi Iubita Mon Amour.

“We waited for the technology to catch up. And the technology has broken us.” So Russell T Davies told the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine about series 14, episode five “Dot and Bubble”. Tech breaking people sounds fitting for an episode Davies describes as Doctor Who’s “clearest step into Black Mirror territory.”
Set in a colony on an alien planet, “Dot and Bubble” is the story of Lindy Pepper Bean (Callie Cooke), a citizen of the happy, harmonious and social-media-absorbed world of Finetime. When Lindy’s friends start disappearing and mysterious monsters appear to be in operation, will Ruby and the Doctor be able to convince Finetime’s residents of the truth before it’s too late?
The idea for the episode first came to Davies 15 years ago, he told Dwm’s Benjamin Cook. During an LA lunch ahead of the series 11 launch, he pitched it to Steven Moffat,...

"73 Yards" is the strongest episode of the new "Doctor Who" season so far, which is surprising considering it's the first one that barely features the Doctor at all. Showrunner and episode-writer Russell T Davies has taken a cue from season 4's Doctor-lite episode "Turn Left," taking us through years of the companion's life without the Doctor around to help her out. The results are terrifying: as soon as the Doctor's gone, Ruby finds herself followed by a mysterious old woman. The woman magically stays exactly 73 yards away from Ruby at all times, and whenever Ruby sends someone else to talk with her, they freak out and suddenly want nothing to do with her.
It's a mysterious premise that puts Ruby through the wringer like we've never seen before. First, she has to spend a few nights alone at an inn filled with the world's rudest patrons. Then she goes...

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who episode “73 Yards”.
When Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies delivers an episode like “73 Yards”, the temptation to pin it down is tough to resist. It’s hard not to want diagrams, flow-charts and footnoted explanations of every slippery element. It’s worth resisting that urge though, because this episode was designed to evade simple answers. No amount of close-reading will reveal its definitive truth.
That’s a deliberate choice, let’s be clear. If Davies had wanted to pin a single interpretation on this strange, melancholic tale, then he’d have done it. That big brain would easily have invented a sci-fi or folkloric precedent for the phenomenon Ruby experiences, in which she’s followed at a precise distance by an always-out-of-reach figure who makes anybody who approaches her run screaming away from Ruby forever. Davies would have conjured up a fictional fix for...

[This story contains spoilers from the Doctor Who season up to and including “73 Yards.”]
There aren’t many television shows that could, in the matter of only a few episodes, feature a monster made of boogers that terrorizes babies, a killer drag queen defeated by the power of music (with a little help from The Beatles) and a pointless religious war catalyzed by a capitalist algorithm.
But, not all shows are Doctor Who.
And since Disney+ acquired the long-running BBC science-fiction show, the Time Lord — now played by Ncuti Gatwa — in the quintessentially British show remains as quirky as ever.
The latest episode, penned by showrunner Russell T Davies, continues its unpredictable streak by donning the guise of folk-horror in an eerie decade-spanning epic that will have Whovians tapping their keyboards in forums for years to come.
Below, THR breaks down some questions viewers may have about “73 Yards” and the Disney+ season so far.

Warning: contains plot details for Doctor Who episode “73 Yards”.
Just when the new Doctor’s adventures had started to flow (from outer space to 1960s England to war-torn future planets), in new episode “73 Yards”, he vanishes. One minute: the Doctor’s there, enthusing about the Welsh landscape, and the next? Gone, leaving companion Ruby to work out her next moves alone.
In the story, the Doctor’s absence from “73 Yards” is explained by magic. He accidentally steps on and breaks a fairy circle. The circle’s charm is released and, though the Tardis remains as a monument, the Doctor is removed to parts unknown. After a bit of a timeline-averting rewind though, back he comes at the end and it’s business as usual next week.
In the real world, the Doctor had to be absent from “73 Yards” because Ncuti Gatwa had a schedule clash. His commitment to film the...

There are few hard and fast rules of time travel in the Doctor Who universe, but one seems to be that you can't cross your own timeline.
Is that what happened to Ruby on Doctor Who Season 1 Episode 4?
A story that began as a gothic horror tale turned into a journey through Ruby's timeline, and the ending led to more questions than answers. How did this story fit into the bigger mystery surrounding Ruby's birth?
Ruby Carried the Episode Alone
When the Doctor and a companion get separated, they usually work to find one another. This story, however, broke tradition by having Ruby travel alone for 65 years before things were restored to rights.
It's hard to know how to feel about that. Ruby's travels through her life and attempts to discover who the mysterious woman was were interesting, but it felt more like a spinoff short story than an episode of Doctor Who.

Warning: this Doctor Who review contains spoilers.
Halfway through the frustrating, fascinating “73 Yards”, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart says: “It’s what we do, all of us. We see something inexplicable and invent the rules to make it work.”
Ever since the Doctor inadvertently allowed superstition to seep through at the end of the universe in “Wild Blue Yonder”, the series has been engaging explicitly with the supernatural. From goblins that feast on coincidence and bad luck, to chaos gods weaponising the music within our souls, this focus on the fantastical has opened up many exciting narrative and visual possibilities for Doctor Who. And as Kate points out, in a neat bit of world-building, it hasn’t gone unnoticed – as well as the usual psychic training and telepathic dampeners, Unit personnel also wear necklaces of silver and salt.
It’s compelling stuff. But as chilling, tense and unpredictable as this episode is – and...

In episode four of Doctor Who series 14, the 15th Doctor and Ruby land on the coastal cliffs of modern-day Wales. The views are amazing and they can’t see another person for miles. However, a fluke results in the Doctor disappearing and Ruby must figure out on her own how to get him back.
Episodes like “73 Yards” where the Doctor’s screen time is considerably shortened, are referred to as Doctor-lite episodes. They’re either made because of a scheduling conflict (Ncuti Gatwa was finishing his final season of Sex Education while “73 Yards” was being filmed) or due to a budgetary need to film two episodes simultaneously, as happened with series three’s Blink.

Sugar Ending Explained: Does Sugar Go Back to His Home Planet? ( Photo Credit – Apple TV )
Apple TV’s sci-fi detective thriller Sugar wrapped up its first season with another twist, which was difficult to anticipate. However, nothing can match the major twist of the show that revealed John Sugar to be an alien, residing on earth with other fellow aliens, to study the behavior of human beings. Despite not being as shocking as this twist, the ending is pretty tight and leaves room for unanswered questions that hint at the possibility of a second season.
What Happens in Sugar?
Sugar follows the journey of its main character, John Sugar, a Pi who is also obsessed with movies. He kind of thinks of himself as a movie star and several shots of the show cut to different hollywood noir and detective movies. We learn that Sugar finds people who cannot or...

The series finale of Ncuti Gatwa’s debut series of Doctor Who will be shown in cinemas around the UK, here are the details.
Doctor Who being streamed to cinemas is a relatively recent phenomenon, discounting Dr Who And The Daleks and Daleks: 2150 Ad, the Peter Cushing films made for cinema release in 1965 and 1966. 50th anniversary special Day Of The Doctor was beamed to cinemas in 2013, as was Peter Capaldi’s debut episode Deep Breath in 2014. Now? There’s more!
The BBC has announced that Empire Of Light, the finale of this year’s series of Doctor Who, will be streamed to cinemas, along with preceding episode The Legend Of Ruby Sunday, courtesy of CinemaLive.
Showrunner Russell T Davies previously teased the finale of season one by saying “this is a great big rip-roaring finale with the Doctor, Ruby and friends old and new fighting the greatest enemy of their lives.

A spoiler-free review of Russell T Davies’ Doctor Who episode, 73 Yards. Still don’t read it if you want to know absolutely nothing.
I’ve got a little out of the habit when it comes to writing spoiler-free reviews of Doctor Who. Back in my Den Of Geek days, I was turning these out weekly. These days? Less so, as I get older, and get even more conscious of not wanting to spoil any of an episode for someone.
Still, I’ve read some of the discourse surrounding this current run of Doctor Who, and thought it might be worth jumping back in for Russell T Davies’ latest penned episode, 73 Yards. He’s made the point in interviews building up to the current series of the show that one of the delights with Doctor Who is it can be something new each and every week. *Warning — this review contains some spoilers for 'Boom'*
Ever since Ncuti Gatwa took over the Tardis keys to become Doctor Who’s Fifteenth Doctor, things have been pretty non-stop for everybody’s favourite Time Lord. From playing cosmic catch with Neil Patrick Harris’ Toymaker in 60th anniversary special debut ‘The Giggle’, to scat-battling a goblin king with new companion Ruby Sunday (Gibson) in Christmas outing ‘The Church On Ruby Road’, to run-ins with space babies, bogeymen, Beatles, and the celestial embodiment of music itself in 'Space Babies' and 'The Devil's Chord', there’s barely been a moment for the Doctor — or indeed the show’s viewers — to take a breath. All of that changes with ‘Boom’, a stripped back, slowed down, and cheek-clenchingly suspenseful character study from former Who showrunner — and Weeping Angels creator — Steven Moffat.

For crisp tension or thematic clarity, nothing in “The Balconettes” quite outdoes the nearly self-contained, minutes-long short that opens actor-director Noémie Merlant’s frenzied, heatstruck genre mashup. On a 115-degree summer afternoon in a wilting, AC-challenged Marseilles apartment block, a put-upon middle-aged wife passes out on her balcony. Roused with a splash of water by her boorish husband, who demands she get back to her chores, the poor woman breaks: Getting to her feet, she whacks him unconscious with a steel dustpan, smothers him with a towel, and sits on him for good measure until all life seeps out of his body. With not a scrap of backstory required, this immensely satisfying vignette earns the film an early round of cheers.
That’s the last we see of this character’s plight, save for a brief shot later of her being led away from the building by police. (Cue some...

Noemie Merlant, best known beyond France for her performances in Celine Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Todd Field’s Tár, made her debut as a writer-director-actor a few years back with Mi Iubita, mon amour, which starts with a bachelorette party. Merlant offers up another female-solidarity story in the shape of The Balconettes (Les femmes au balcon), a comedy with a very dark streak or a giggly drama depending on how you look at it.
Given at one point that a writer character in the film rejects the supposed rules of storytelling, which require clear acts and so forth, Merlant obviously knows she’s taking risks with a free-form, genre-bending structure, and that’s cool. It’s just a shame that the end product is so loosey-goosey it’s less a bold sui generis experiment than a hot mess.

Ghost story, body horror, feminist comedy and a freshly minted edition of that very French subgenre, How to Get Rid of a Troublesome Corpse: Noémie Merlant, familiar as a fine actress from Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, packs a good deal into her sophomore feature as director, The Balconettes. The message is essentially Time’s Up, maxxed out to include revenge killings; the medium is Mediterranean color. Sciamma co-wrote the script with Merlant, which may come as a surprise given that this swirl of blood and wackiness, complete with a running gag about a severed penis, is about as far from the restraint of Sciamma’s own films as could be.

It’s hard to remember the last time a director prominently displayed their own vagina onscreen. Statistically speaking, most of them wouldn’t be able to do it if they tried. But Noémie Merlant has never shied away from an opportunity to redefine how female bodies are depicted on film, and “The Portrait of a Lady on Fire” star’s recent pivot behind the camera has only emboldened her efforts to reject the male gaze by inviting her characters to reclaim its oppressive hyper-sexualization on their own terms.
Needless to say, she’s happy to lead by example in her poisoned but delicious midnight snack of a second feature. Playing Élise, a C-list starlet who’s recently been cast as Marilyn Monroe in a TV movie (only to steal her boyfriend’s car and flee the set in a panic), Merlant crashes into “The Balconettes” dolled up to look like...

Steven Moffat is one of the most divisive names in the "Doctor Who" fandom. First he was the beloved writer who gave us one amazing story per season. Then he was given the reins of the show in 2010 and the audience's good will started to slip away. By season 7 he'd gotten a reputation as a guy whose storylines were too complicated for their own good, and as a showrunner who was sort of bad at writing realistic, three-dimensional characters who weren't named the Doctor. Particular scrutiny was given to how he wrote women; we loved River Song when she was introduced in season 4, but by the end of Eleven's run it felt like most of his female characters were just River Song variants. Moffat loves himself an aggressively badass woman who never stops flirting, but fans themselves grew tired of it.

This Doctor Who article contains spoilers.
Back in 2012, Doctor Who fans freaked out. We’d been told in advance that Clara (Jenna Coleman) would eventually replace Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) as the next companion of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) in series 7 of the show. But fans weren’t prepared for just how soon Coleman would make her Doctor Who debut. Although she wouldn’t officially join Matt Smith in the Tardis until a few episodes later, Coleman first appeared in the series 7 premiere “Asylum of the Daleks” as a seemingly different character named Oswin, who, although she met a tragic end, encouraged the Doctor to remember her.
And now, 12 years later, it looks like Who history is repeating itself. In the absolutely wonderful Steven Moffat-penned episode, “Boom,” the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) encounters a host of new allies, including a marine named Mundy. For fans of Star Wars: Andor,...

A desolate planet at war for no apparent reason. Algorithms that decide who lives or dies. Landmines that turn their victims into weapons of mass destruction.
Doctor Who Season 1 Episode 3 took a decidedly darker tone, putting to rest fears that the series had become childish, lighthearted fare after Disney+ agreed to stream it worldwide.
This story had some Twilight Zone-like elements, which was unsurprising considering that it was written by Steven Moffat, known for writing scarier, more horror-inspired content than other Doctor Who writers. Still, did he set up a brilliant story only to mess up the ending?
A Planet at War With... Who Exactly?
I figured out the twist that the inhabitants were at war for no reason fairly early on.
More fog. Maybe the Kastorians are made of fog. That's why we never see them.
Carson Permalink: More fog. Maybe the Kastorians are made of fog. That's why we never see them.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Doctor Who Season 1 Episode 3 “Boom.”] Welcome back to Doctor Who, Steven Moffat! The former showrunner wrote the latest episode, which puts the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby (Millie Gibson) in the middle of a battlefield, with a few twists along the way. The one that will have everyone buzzing first is obviously the casting for one of the Anglican Marines (just one of several nods to Moffat’s Doctor Who past): Varada Sethu—who’s joining the series in Season 2 as a new companion—as Mundy. Moffat, understandably, is mum when it comes to even hinting at what’s ahead for Sethu on Doctor Who. “[Showrunner] Russell [T Davies] has a plan, and I don’t know what the exact details of his release of that plan are going to be,” he tells TV Insider. “I simply wrote the character of Mundy, and she did what she had to do in the story.

Warning: this Doctor Who review contains spoilers.
It’s all fun and games until someone steps on a mine.
There has certainly been peril in Ruby Sunday’s first few adventures with the Doctor. Being briefly erased from history, babies abandoned to die in space, nuclear winter brought on by chaos god – you don’t just shrug those things off. But even the darkest moments have occurred in the context of fairly light-hearted romps.
With the tense, riveting “Boom”, however, we have the first real example of this new companion going through a genuinely traumatic ordeal. It’s sort of Ruby’s “The Fires of Pompeii”, albeit with a much cheerier ending – the episode where the companion realises that travelling with the Doctor can get pretty rough. By its nature, it’s the kind of adventure that comes after some bedding in – you can’t start a companion’s tenure...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for the sixth episode of “Hacks” Season 3.
Season 3 of “Hacks” began with Ava (Hannah Einbinder) finally feeling happy in both her career and her love life, but of course, the stability didn’t last. After Ruby (Lorenza Izzo) dumps Ava for restarting her toxic working relationship with Deborah (Jean Smart), Ava badly needs a win, which she gets in the form of a hot, older rebound — until everything goes to shit yet again.
In Episode 6, “Par for the Course,” Ava accompanies Deborah to a golf tournament where they’ll schmooze with network bigwigs as they continue trying to land Deborah the late night hosting gig she’s coveted for decades. After Deborah points out that Ava isn’t as “of the people” as she thinks she is, never having worked a service industry job before, she agrees to act as Deborah’s caddy for the weekend.

Noémie Merlant’s star is rising as an actress. Baby Ruby and Tár won her international recognition across 2022 and 2023, while anticipation is growing around her starring role in Audrey Diwan’s English-language reboot of erotica classic Emmanuelle. In the meantime, Merlant is hitting Cannes with The Balconettes, her second film in the director’s chair after Mi iubita, mon amour. Set against a Marseille heatwave, the riotous comedy and gorefest co-stars Merlant alongside Souheila Yacoub and Sanda Codreanu as female flatmates who are pushed to the brink when a late-night drink with an attractive neighbor (played by Emily in Paris actor Lucas Bravo) takes a bloody turn.
Deadline: What was the inspiration for Les Balconettes?
NOÉMIE Merlant: Four, five years ago I fled my home in a sort of escape from something that was suffocating me. I sought refuge with two girlfriends who were living together and stayed for several months.

The massive revelation of Sugar being an extraterrestrial being at the closing sequence of Episode 6 in the Colin Farrell starrer Sugar just keeps getting better. What we all thought to be a show about a charming private investigator’s heroics turned out to be much bigger than that. Sugar almost died during his duel with Stallings, and just when he’s about to stand on his feet again, bigger problems knock at his door. Throughout the series, the Cosmopolitan Polyglot Society has been under a gray cloud, with nobody being able to figure out what their origins are. Many conspiracy theories took place alongside David and Kenny’s lame guesses. In Episode 7, we finally get to know how this society came to be.

One of the members of the Cosmopolitan Polyglot Society, Henry Thorpe is an alien who’s taken the job of an anthropologist. Often teaching at University, Henry seems like a man who can’t hurt a fly. After Ozark, Jason Thomas Butler nails the role of Henry and gets under your skin in a creepy way really well. Sugar has had many revelations throughout the first season, but Henry turning out to be the main antagonist is something not many saw coming.

Who is Henry Thorpe?
You first see Henry at Ruby’s party, a very timid figure who is unnoticeable until Sugar meets him. When Sugar tells him about the Shibuya Crossing, Henry listens to him with great interest, or at least pretends to do so. This brief introduction to the character doesn’t really make much mark, as one would think he’d be completely inconsequential to the narrative.

[This story includes spoilers from the opening two episodes of the new season of Doctor Who, “Space Babies” and “The Devil’s Chord.”]
Doctor Who, BBC’s long-running science-fiction show, is back with a new season, a new cast and, for many international territories, a new home on Disney+.
The first two episodes of the latest season have now dropped on the streamer, and on the BBC iPlayer in the U.K., and they see Ncuti Gatwa (Barbie, Sex Education) firmly solidifying his role as the Fifteenth Doctor with companion Ruby Sunday, played by newcomer Millie Gibson, after their 2023 Christmas Day debut with “The Church On Ruby Road.”
Gatwa recently wowed crowds with his punky red carpet style at the L.A. Doctor Who premiere, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “There’s a twist to this traditional, institutional show that’s stepping into the modern era.”
Earlier this week, THR ran the first part of this interview with the Doctor Who pair — which didn’t include any spoilers.

Undeniably, Kelly Clarkson was having a rough night. While she was performing on May 10, she was a bit out of sorts.
Kelly Clarkson Starts The Night Off In A Weird Mood
When she first came on stage at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on May 10 and 11, she was feeling a little off. After entering the platform, Kelly Clarkson admits she was in a weird mood. She says, “I’m in a weird mood. I don’t know why. You should’ve seen me backstage. I was dancing like Kristen Wiig in [Saturday Night Live],” referring to her creative movements. But even with the unusual intro, she said she was eager to start and be performing. Admittedly, she only gets to do short songs as part of Kellyoke on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Kelly Clarkson is no stranger to performing Kellyoke on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Is Melissa Gorga officially done with Rhonj after Season 14 ends? She did not even know what would happen when Teresa Giudice made it seem like one had to go after last season’s reunion. They were both welcomed back but things are not the same. So, is Melissa seeing herself out? Keep reading for more details on the mother of three’s future.
Melissa Gorga Done With Rhonj After Season 14?
When Season 13 ended, it appeared that it was going to be between Melissa Gorga and her sister-in-law, Teresa Giudice. This was tricky as Teresa is an Og of Rhonj plus she has been a fan favorite for years. No matter what she does, it seems that audiences appreciate her for keeping the franchise going. Her brother, Joe Gorga, and his wife, Melissa, came onto the show in Season 3 and it was always up and down. They would have moments of beauty and calm.

“Maxton Hall College is not just a school. It is the school.”
James (Damian Hardung) and Ruby’s (Harriet Herbig-Matten) electric romance may be the primary focus of Maxton Hall — The World Between Us, but the school itself is just as important of a character. Based on the novel Save Me by Mona Kasten, Prime Video’s new German YA drama series utilizes its prep school setting to lay the groundwork for its central enemies-to-lovers romance.

[This story contains spoilers from the first two episodes of Doctor Who‘s new season, “Space Babies” and “The Devil’s Chord.”]
BBC’s science-fiction powerhouse Doctor Who has launched its new season starring Ncuti Gatwa (Barbie, Sex Education) across the world on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere.
Showrunner Russell T Davies first performed the unenviable task of bringing the series back to the small screen in 2005, with actor Christopher Eccleston (HBO’s The Leftovers) in the lead role and launching it to new heights with almost 14 million viewers tuning in from the U.K alone.
Davies then left his showrunning duties in 2009, handing the franchise over to Sherlock’s Steven Moffat. But he returned for four specials celebrating Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary in 2023. And with it, he brought Gatwa to the role of the Time Lord.
The Hollywood Reporter published the first part to this interview ahead of Doctor Who‘s Disney+ launch. Now, Davies digs into spoilers from the first two episodes,...

Steven Moffat has written the 2024 Doctor Who Christmas Special entitled Joy To The World.
Almost as soon as Russell T Davies announced he was returning as showrunner on Doctor Who, fans began speculating about who else might be returning. Top of the list for many was Steven Moffat, who’s clocked up more Doctor Who scripts than any other writer.
Rumour turned into fact earlier this year, when it was confirmed that Moffat had indeed returned to the fold to pen the third episode in Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson’s debut series, entitled Boom. Set to be darker in nature than the opening two episodes, the official synopsis reads as follows:
Caught in the middle of a devastating war on Kastarion 3, the Doctor is trapped when he steps on a landmine. Can he save himself and Ruby, plus the entire planet… without moving?
