Generative AI was a topic of hot debate on Tuesday at Deloitte’s Media & Telecoms 2024 and Beyond Conference in London where a panel of newspaper and media company bosses discussed deals with artificial intelligence firms.
The executives on the panel included Anna Bateson, CEO of Guardian Media Group, The Sun publisher Dominic Carter, Telegraph Media Group CEO Anna Jones, Rich Caccappolo, the CEO of The Daily Mail owner Dmg Media, and ITN CEO Rachel Corp.
“What AI can’t do is replace journalism,” Carter argued. “Journalism is human endeavor.” In comparison, an election season, such as in the U.K. right now, is especially a time when deepfakes may surface.
Asked about Sun owner News Corp.’s recent deal with OpenAI, Carter said “control is really important,” along with transparency, “and then accountability.”
Could AI deals bring in money but be followed by industry headaches as seen in past deals with social media firms?...

Eamonn Holmes has expressed his frustration about his treatment in the media landscape as a “white man in his sixties” in a new interview.
The broadcaster, who is an anchor on the Gb News weekday morning programme Breakfast with Eamonn and Isabel, reflected on moments of his career in an episode of the podcast How to Be 60 with Kaye Adams.
Speaking about his exit from his Radio 5 programme in 2009, Holmes, 63, claimed that while his listenership ratings were “excellent”, an executive told him that the show was “attracting the wrong type of people”, and that they were pursuing a younger audience.
“You’re attracting older people, and we don’t want that,” Holmes claims he was told during a meeting with a production boss.
He continued his story by saying that he ended the meeting in an explicit fashion.
“I basically told him to f**k off, and that was the end of that,...

Eamonn Holmes has claimed that some of his ex-colleagues are “dead” to him.
The presenter has previously spoken out against his former employer ITV, after leaving his role as a host of This Morning in 2021.
Speaking to co-host Isabel Webster on his Gb Newsprogramme on Wednesday (18 January), Holmes suggested it was sometimes “good not to like people” and “good to have revenge”.
The subject came up during a discussion about Shakira’s recent “diss track” aimed at the singer’s ex, Gerard Pique.
“You talk a good game about this,” Webster told Holmes, on the subject of revenge. “You do, you talk a good game about it but actually, all the people in your life that you’ve had ding dongs with in the past, you’re on great terms with now when I think about it.”
Holmes admitted he was willing to “forgive and forget” certain personal grievances, referring...

Comcast chief Brian Roberts welcomed Sky’s U.K. staff members into the fold Tuesday at Sky’s vast West London campus in the Osterley neighborhood. Roberts’ message at a company town hall session was that Sky could “go faster” with the backing of its new U.S. corporate parent.
Comcast CFO Mike Cavanagh and NBCUniversal boss CEO Steve Burke were also part of an all-star executive lineup at the meeting – and, by way of onscreen talent, Jimmy Fallon made a surprise entrance via a video link and welcomed Sky staff to the family.
For Roberts and Sky CEO Jeremy Darroch, it was the next leg of a European tour that saw them touch down in Italy and Germany on Monday for similar events at Sky’s two other major European hubs.
The London gathering was attended by hundreds of staff members and streamed for all Sky staff in the U.

Exclusive: Jimmy Fallon came to Sky’s London HQ… sort of. The host of The Tonight Show recorded a message to the British pay-tv’s employees, saying that he’s looking forward to them being part of the extended Comcast family following its $40B takeover.
Fallon’s video message, recorded on the set of the NBC late night talk show, came as part of Brian Robert’s town hall appearance at Sky’s Osterley headquarters in south London.
The Comcast CEO said that Sky’s recently renovated campus was the “coolest venue” he’s ever spoken in and one that rivaled any office in Silicon Valley.
He spoke for about ten minutes to a couple thousand Sky employees, describing the company’s culture, its family history, why he wanted to buy Sky and the synergies that he felt would come from the deal. He was speaking with Sky News presenter Anna Jones,...
