Prior to the immense success of television shows like "The Last of Us" and "Fallout," many audiences felt that video game adaptations were cursed. There were plenty of quick cash grabs and bizarre attempts at movie adaptations that just didn't work throughout the years, but one secret standout is the 2006 Christophe Gans film "Silent Hill." Based on the Konami video game series of the same name, "Silent Hill" follows a mother (Radha Mitchell) who goes into the uniquely haunted town of Silent Hill to try and rescue her adopted daughter, Heather (Jodelle Ferland). While the film isn't super accurate to the story from the games, it does capture the mood and some of the themes and completely nails the aesthetic, which can be half the battle with video game titles as visually recognizable as "Silent Hill." There's just nothing quite like its grungy industrial meat locker vibe and its delightfully disturbing monsters,...

After letting the cat out of the bag earlier during the Sony State of Play regarding the release date for Silent Hill 2, Konami has followed that up with the latest edition of Silent Hill Transmission. The event mainly focused on Silent Hill 2, but also delved into Christophe Gans‘ upcoming Return to Silent Hill film.
The event kicked off with an extended 13-minute look at the gameplay of Silent Hill 2, jumping around various moments in the game. We get scenes of James getting the iconic radio, the reveal of Laura and Maria, the nurses in Brookhaven, and culminating in the appearance of the Flesh Lip. Pre-orders are now open on Steam and the PlayStation Store, with bonuses including a Mira the Dog mask, and exclusive to the PS5, a Robbie the Rabbit mask.

The Silent Hill 2 remake trailer may have had some questionable elements, but thanks to that, fans now have a satirical spin on the footage. Silent Hill 2 is an extremely iconic game that revolutionized the survival horror genre and has left its mark ever since its release, all the way back in 2001. When fans heard about the remake, expectations were very high. But there’s also a lot of concern about what might change in the process, as is the case sometimes with remakes.
The original game is being remade by Bloober Team, the studio behind Layers of Fear and The Medium, and is set to release sometime in 2024. A combat trailer for the remake was released on February 1, but a new satirical trailer might have stemmed from the official Silent Hill 2 remake trailer.

Konami’s Silent Hill 2 was first announced back in October 2022 when the game was said to be under development by Bloober Team. There have been leaks and rumors ever since about the release of the highly anticipated remake but nothing official has surfaced. A fan has now spotted a giant poster put up at Gamestop and now fans are hopeful for an imminent announcement soon.
There have been reports of placeholder empty cases of the game in several stores but this was the first time a giant poster was put up. Some fans are still apprehensive about it and believe it to be a marketing tactic to get more pre-orders in.

With Silent Hill: Ascension due out later this year, the team has started to divulge more info on the game. IGN has snagged an inside look at the game’s development, including news that cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy fame has signed on to be the composer for Silent Hill: Ascension.
The clip begins with Genvid Entertainment’ Cco Stephen Bugaj explaining the concept of the interactive streaming series, and how it (along with Ascension) is the next evolution of interactive television that builds off of the fundamentals that were created for Telltale Games and Netflix’s “Bandersnatch”.
“All of the viewers will interact with our series simultaneously. They will be influencing a continuously unfolding story canon that they all experience together,” says Bugaj. “Everyone sees the same thing, everyone participates in the same decisions. Alongside Bloober Team, the rest of the Silent Hill 2 remake team at Konami is making the rounds, spreading the good news about the game. IGN sat down with Silent Hill series producer Motoi Okamoto, as well as Silent Hill 2 concept artist Masahiro Ito and composer Akira Yamaoka to discuss the project, including the decision to go with Bloober Team as developer.
According to Okamoto, Konami settled on remaking Silent Hill 2 over the original due to SH2 being “the true psychological horror” identity of the series. “We decided that if the brand’s identity is true psychological horror, we needed to start by remaking Silent Hill 2. There were of course some people inside the company who thought it would be better to start with 1, but I wanted to start this project with something that symbolizes this identity.”‘

Being a Silent Hill fan can be pretty rough. While fellow survival horror franchises like Resident Evil never stopped releasing sequels, remakes and adaptations, it’s been a decade since the last official Silent Hill game. And even then, most of the games released after the original Team Silent disbanded weren’t exactly masterpieces to begin with. There was a glimmer of hope back in 2014 with the surprise announcement of Hideo Kojima’s Silent Hills, but that project was cancelled faster than a series protagonist can chug down a Health Drink.
Fortunately for fans, Konami’s Silent Hill Transmission appears to indicate that the dog days are over, with a staggering four unique entries currently in development. While this is the best horror news I’ve heard all year, there’s always a risk that not all of these projects will make it to the finish line. After all, Konami...

For nearly a decade, Silent Hill existed only in our restless dreams, with Konami refusing to finance any new projects and not even facilitating the rerelease of previous games. Sure, there was a spark of hope when Hideo Kojima revealed P.T. and his plans for a franchise reinvention, but that promising endeavor was soon replaced by Pachinko Machines and crossovers in other games. That’s why, for the longest time, fans had come to accept that their favorite survival horror series was finally dead.
Of course, that all changed with Konami’s recent Silent Hill Transmission, which revealed not one, but five simultaneous projects meant to bring the series back to its former glory! As a life-long fan of the series (Silent Hill was actually what got me into horror in the first place), I was naturally ecstatic. And with the cursed town possibly receiving new arrivals in the near future,...

Konami’s Silent Hill livestream showcase event may have been surprisingly short, frustratingly vague, and (for some reason) released way too early, but it hasn’t taken long for fans to share their passionate reactions to the reveals we did get. After all, people have been waiting a long time for something (anything) related to Silent Hill that wasn’t just Dlc of varying quality (or slot machines). You’d better believe that people were waiting with their most emotional hot takes ready to go.
So far as that goes, the Silent Hill fan community has not disappointed. Indeed, a lot of the early chatter about the Silent Hill reveal event was focused on the fact that many people were thrilled to have an excuse to talk about anything related to Silent Hill again.

One of the more exciting animated projects set to debut on Netflix this year is "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners." Based on the highly promoted (and barely finished) video game, the series was pitched as a new production by the famous Studio Trigger. Bombastic action specialist Hiroyuki Imaishi is directing, wunderkind animator Yoh Yoshinari is contributing character designs, and much of the studio's creative brain trust is on board. Not to mention some first-time collaborators, like "Silent Hill" composer Akira Yamaoka. Imaishi is a wild card; he's best known today for his collaborations with the scriptwriter Kazuki Nakashima, but his early works like "Dead...

We finally got a better look at previously teased Xbox horror title The Medium, and what we’ve seen so far certainly has us intrigued.
As we’ve talked about before, The Medium sees you play as a medium named Marianne who exists in two distinct worlds: a human world and a spirit world. She’ll need to navigate and investigate both of these worlds in order to solve the mystery of a young girl who was murdered in an abandoned hotel.
Plot-wise, it seems pretty clear that The Medium developer Bloober Team are choosing to refrain from revealing too much ahead of the game’s release date. That’s ok, though, because it’s pretty clear at this early stage that The Medium‘s unique gameplay will be its biggest initial draw.
Much of The Medium‘s gameplay will seemingly consist of the player viewing Marianne as she exists...

Studio Trigger is working on a Cyberpunk 2077-based anime series called Cyberpunk: Edgerunners which is set to debut on Netflix in 2022.
“[Cyberpunk: Edgerunners] tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future,” reads a description of the series. “Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.”
The anime will take place in Cyberpunk 2077‘s universe, but it will not be a retelling of the upcoming game. Instead, it sounds like Studio Trigger’s goal is for the show to focus on new stories and characters within Night City.
Hiroyuki Imaishi (Kill la Kill) will be directing Cyberpunk: Edgerunners while famed Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka will compose the show’s score. Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red, meanwhile, will serve as one of the series’ producers. Here...

Pyramid Head is coming to Dead by Daylight. According to developer Behavior Interactive, the terrifying antagonist and media icon from the Silent Hill franchise will be available as a playable character in the game’s next Dlc.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the property, Dead by Daylight is an online horror-based survival game in which one player assumes the role of killer, and four others play the part of victim. The goal of the killer is to, well, kill the other players, while the victims must try to escape from their pursuer.
Although Dead by Daylight boasts a small variety of original characters, it’s the licensed ones to which the game owes its popularity. Through a series of Dlc, players can crawl into the skin of psychos and monsters home to a number of different titles, including Scream, Left For Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,...

A new Silent Hill game may have been in the works this whole time, and none of us knew anything about it. According to prominent leaker AestheticGamer, the fifth installment in this infamous horror franchise is currently in development at Sony’s Japan Studio, where it entered the production stage at some point last year.
Of course, Silent Hill has been the subject of more rumors than we care to count, mostly because we can’t keep track of them all. Indeed, while we’ve heard that Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima had picked up the plans for a sequel which he was forced to abort in 2014, other reports say that God of War director Cory Barlog is secretly considering taking on the project.
According to AestheticGamer, however, the game will be headed by Keiichiro Toyama, creative director of the 1999 original. According to the leaker, Akira Yamaoka, the composer of Silent Hill 2,...

Bloober Team (the studio behind such horror titles as The Blair Witch and Layers of Fear) has revealed the first trailer for an exciting upcoming horror game called The Medium.
“The Medium is a tension-fueled, psychological horror game built around a central motif: how your perspective changes your perception,” reads a description of the game from Bloober Team. “Players will find themselves in the body of Marianne, a medium hounded by visions, living and interacting across two worlds: the real, and the spirit world. Nothing is what it seems, everything has another side. As a medium with access to both worlds, you have a wider perspective and can see more clearly that there’s no one simple truth to what others perceive. “

The rumour mill for Konami’s Silent Hill franchise has been in full swing as of late.
From outlandish reports of Microsoft buying the Japanese publisher’s gaming back catalogue, to more plausible news of the company partnering with Sony to develop two brand new Silent Hill titles, to even the unlikely possibility of a re-collaboration between Konami and everyone’s favourite Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima. Long story short: even though there hasn’t been any official confirmation from the publisher, the Silent Hill series feels like it’s finally back in the spotlight now, and that’s even before mentioning the new cinematic sequel that’s officially been given the greenlight, too.
That said, some fresh new intel that pertains to Konami’s beloved survival horror franchise has begun to make the rounds, and it comes from one of 2020’s most prominent leakers, Dusk Golem Aka AestheticGamer over on Twitter.

That wait for a new Silent Hill game could soon be over.
Following on from a number of recent reports claiming that IP owner Konami has been shopping around for a developer to take on the task of bringing the series back, it now seems as if the publisher has found the right people for the job. As per Rely on Horror, sources close to the project have told the site that veterans Masahiro Ito, Keiichiro Toyama and Akira Yamaoka are all involved in what they’re told is being billed as a “soft reboot” of the survival horror franchise.
As if that wasn’t already enough to boost your hopes of a grand comeback, the same sources also specify that Sony is actively pursuing the venture and has brokered some sort of agreement with Konami, likely with the end goal of an exclusivity deal for the upcoming PlayStation 5.

Considering that this is a topic I don’t get to write about very often, I’m going to open up and say that there are few franchises I love more than Silent Hill. Being a fan who’s been on board since the original game dropped in 1999, I’ve since felt compelled to regularly revisit the otherworldly town, often referring to it as “my home away from home.” Heck, I’ve even met and seen Akira Yamaoka perform live, an experience I will cherish for the rest of my days.
Hopefully, there are still some of you out there who share this sentiment, because we the fans have gotten the shaft in the time since 2012. If you’ll recall, that year brought us a triple threat of games – Downpour, Book of Memories and the HD Collection – each of which remain our last interactive experiences to fall under the Silent Hill banner,...

As you know, music plays a huge part in the filmmaking process and plays with our emotions while we are watching the movie. Music heightens our senses and adds to the quality of film. When it comes to horror movies, the music is supposed to scare us, make us feel uneasy, and gives us moments of panic and fear. Director Martin Scorsese said the following about music and film:
“Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.”
Just the other day the main theme song from Halloween started playing on the radio, and it freaked my kids out to the point that they were in tears. It was sad but kind of funny at the same time.

Resident Evil was the first horror game I ever played. I still remember going into town and picking it up at a video game shop. It was rated as a “15″ over here in the UK, and at the time I was 14. My dad bought it for me regardless because that’s how he rolled, and it was the most excited I’d been in a long time to play a game. I read the manual from cover to cover on the drive home, and I barely had time to chew my lunch before retreating to my bedroom. I popped the disc into my Playstation, and the fun began; a comically hammy live-action opening, awkward controls, unconvincing arterial spray and Barry Burton’s legitimitately ridiculous delivery of the line “you were almost a Jill sandwich”. I was hooked.

Sure, it’s not much to look at now in 2014 and the voice acting is mostly atrocious and unintentionally hilarious (I dare you to not laugh during a cut scene involving some heavy exposition between characters) but Silent Hill was something else back in its day, crafting a unique psychological horror and gaming experience that was quite unlike the horror games that came before it.
It certainly wasn’t the first survival horror video game to come out on the market. Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil were making waves with their terrifying approach to the genre for a few years before. And is there anybody out there that can remember Clock Tower on the Super Nintendo? Sheesh man – I still get shivers thinking about that one. Christophe Gans’ Silent Hill, while thoroughly imperfect, was at least a stylistically faithful adaptation of the popular video game, and continues to stand tall as the most reverent one to date. The film’s modest successes are not repeated, however, in Michael J. Bassett’s (Deathwatch, Solomon Kane) inept, offensive butchering of the outstanding third Silent Hill game.
Fans of the game will be acutely aware of why Bassett has chosen not to just adapt the second title in the series, because Silent Hill 3 shares a direct narrative fabric with the first game, whereas the second – easily the best game of the lot – is almost completely unrelated beyond sharing the same setting. And while the first few minutes of Revelation demonstrate some sure promise, accurately replicating the nightmarish carnival scene from the start of the third game, the overly busy, spasmodic direction continually places the viewer at arm’s length.

As Halloween fast approaches it’s that time of year again when filmmakers see the annual occasion as an excuse to release their latest horror flick, as more often than not, we are subject to lacklustre, unoriginal movies that are about as scary as a packet of mints. However, this Halloween we’ve got the promising Silent Hill: Revelation 3D – and to mark the release of the long-awaited sequel, I caught up with leading star Sean Bean.
Based on the hugely successful video game franchise, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D takes us back to the eponymous town, a place where nightmares are a terrifying reality. Bean plays the role of Harry, a vigilant father to Heather (Adelaide Clemens) who is drawn into the surreal, alternate reality that is Silent Hill.

The team behind Lollipop Chainsaw is a veritable who’s who of counter culture names. From James Gunn’s cinematic contributions to Suda 51’s enigmatic games, there’s some of the industry's most creative talent behind Juliet’s chainsaw. One of the most intriguing names on that list is the front man for the electro-punk band Mindless Self Indulgence, James Euringer, more commonly known as Jimmy Urine. Performing the voice of one of the zombie bosses in the game, Zed, as well as composing the music for all of the boss fights, Urine has always had close ties to the gaming community with call outs in Msi’s music videos, album art, and even the songs themselves. We recently had a chance to ask Jimmy some of our burning questions about his role in Lollipop Chainsaw, as well his background as a gamer.

For whatever reason, it feels like the current console generation has been unkind to the survival horror genre. What developer has the knack for creating that deep sense of dread and powerlessness, while still delivering a memorable gameplay experience? I'm not talking about half-measures, either—those games that were pretty scary but had terrible combat, or had a cool mechanic here and there but figured horror meant endless gore.
Have any designers remembered what William Castle knew so well, that all you need is a house, a sound, and some commitment and you'd have the audience in the palm of your hand? And that's what the Silent Hill games are, after all: elaborate haunted houses where the things you imagine—what's around the corner, what will I do, what's next—are worse that anything the game can realize.

People are either going to love Lollipop Chainsaw, or they're going to hate it. The ones that are going to love Suda 51’s latest creation will be able to appreciate it for it's over-the-top, ridiculous humor, and the ones that hate are the ones that take video games too seriously. The current culture of the marketplace is to make realistic, yet fantastical, video games, and sell them to gamers who are looking for an escape from their real life. Lollipop Chainsaw does most of that (not so much in the “realistic” area), but with zombies, and a hot cheerleader in a tiny skirt. It's either everything that's great about video games, or everything that's wrong with video games. Personally, I think it's the former.
