Hope Runs High has acquired U.S. rights to Augusto Sandino’s sophomore feature “A Vanishing Fog,” which won the SXSW Zeiss cinematography prize. The film is slated for an early 2024 opening in U.S. theaters. It’s the first feature to be shot in Colombia’s Sumapaz Páramo, the largest ecosystem of its kind in the world.
“In the middle of the staggering and endangered Sumapaz Paramo ecosystem; F, a solitary explorer, strives to protect the mystical and fragile land he inhabits, while caring for his ailing father,” the synopsis reads.
“Augusto Sandino’s incredible blend of playful surrealism and the overwhelming individuality of the environment in which the film is set has stayed with me since my first viewing. I believe his ability to balance visual scale, cinematic playfulness, and true heart make him an artist we should be engaging with frequently,” said Hope Runs High curator Taylor Purdee.

Bass Reeves has one hell of a story. Born into slavery in Arkansas, he was forced by his owner to fight on the Confederate side of the Civil War. He escaped — legend has it, he beat up his owner over a card game and ran off — and lived for years in the Indian Territory. He eventually became the first Black man to wear a U.S. Marshal badge west of the Missisippi, and finished his career with thousands of arrests. And, depending on which version of pop culture history you believe,...

Ben Folds is just a love machine, but on his new single “Exhausting Lover,” he’s not too happy about it. Listen to the tongue-in-cheek new song below.
“Exhausting Lover” begins as something like a synth pop song before Folds’ spoken-word delivery — about a girl who just can’t stop having sex with him — gives way to a theatrical horn section. The artist paired his melodramatic new song with an equally facetious music video directed by Drunk History’s Derek Waters, in which Folds directs a musical all about the lover in question.
“This was my first foray into musical theater, and Derek’s, too. We both vow to actually go see a musical now,” Folds said in a statement. Waters added: “I always have and always will love Ben Folds. But now I have a deeper appreciation for him knowing we shared similar experiences in a Motel 6 with...

In May, Mythic Quest returned for its second season, building momentum as an awards contender. The Apple TV+ comedy, created by Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Megan Ganz, centers on Ian Grimm (McElhenney), the owner and creative director of a successful video game studio, who struggles to keep his hit game of the same name on top in concert with the dysfunctional family that makes up his staff.
In the Season 2 opener “Titans’ Rift,” lead engineer Poppy Li (Charlotte Nicdao) must step to the plate and come up with a title for a new expansion of the game, with Ian on sabbatical. At the same time, game testers Dana (Imani Hakim) and Rachel (Ashly Burch) take their burgeoning relationship to new heights. Pete Chatmon directed the episode, from a script by McElhenney, Ganz and David Hornsby.

For “Drunk History” co-creator and host Derek Waters, it’s pretty bittersweet to still be campaigning for an Emmy now that his show has been canceled. Comedy Central, which is mostly getting out of the live-action comedy business, announced earlier this month that it had rescinded a Season 7 order for “Drunk History,” and Waters admits it still isn’t clear what happens next.
“It sounds a little dramatic, but it’s like a funeral without any music,” he told Variety‘s Awards HQ. “I would love to finish what I started. It would just be nice to end on your own terms, to say goodbye and not just be like, ‘that’s it.'”
Waters, who created the show with fellow executive producer Jeremy Konner, said he still hasn’t been given an “actual answer why it happened … no one’s called me. I have no idea. I have no verification of it.

Comedy Central has canceled “Drunk History” amid a production hiatus for its previously ordered seventh season. Series creator Derek Waters isn’t going anywhere though: Waters has a first-look deal with the ViacomCBS-owned cable channel.

It's the end of the line for a popular Comedy Central series.
Drunk History has been canceled after six seasons, according to Deadline.
The decision is somewhat surprising because the cabler picked up a 16-episode seventh season last summer.
Early production was said to be underway earlier this year when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, but the series was set to return to production.
Unfortunately, Comedy Central has decided against giving the series time to finish its seventh season, and it's game over.
Drunk History featured comedians getting, you guessed it, drunk and telling co-creator Derek Waters what they could recall about various moments in history.
These moments were then recreated by household names in elaborate period costumes while the narration played out in the background.
Season 6 of Drunk History wrapped in August 2019 with an episode that featued Aubrey Plaza as Cleopatra.

The Emmy Awards ballot for Best Variety Series Directing lists 31 episodes, so there will be only five nominees in this category for the first time in three years, under the new Emmy rules. Under the proportional-representation rules for this category, two slots are reserved for the 16 submitted episodes of sketch series, two are reserved for the 15 submitted talk series and the last slot is a free-for-all. The six nominees last year were:
“Documentary Now!” (Alex Buono & Rhys Thomas): “Waiting for the Artist” “Drunk History” (Derek Waters): “Are You Afraid of the Drunk?” “Last Week Tonight” (Paul Pennolino): “Psychics” “The Late Show” (Jim Hoskinson): “Live Midterm Election Show” Winner — “Saturday Night Live” (Don Roy King): “Host: Adam Sandler” “Who is America?” (Sacha Baron Cohen & Nathan Fielder & Daniel Gray Longino & Dan Mazer): “Episode 102”
There is a new rule this year that only two co-directors can be credited per submission.

Monica Sotto was elevated to production designer on “Drunk History” after Chloe Arbiture left the Comedy Central series between the fifth and sixth seasons. Earlier this year, Sotto took home the variety, reality or event special production design award from the Art Directors Guild for her work on the lip-synced historical comedy after being responsible for creating the sets for all 16 episodes of the sixth season. The season finale, “Bad Blood,” was a specific point of pride and is being submitted for Emmy nomination consideration.
“Bad Blood” depicts Egypt and Rome as Mary Mallon spreads typhoid fever and Cleopatra’s sister schemes for power. Both are locations done many times before on-camera, so how did you want to depict them differently?
We definitely have a cap for the budget so that plays a large part in what we can do. Egypt was shot over three days. Luckily L.A. has a lot of “desert.

While Comedy Central’s Drunk History typically groups its tales by thematic episodes, creators Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner’s approach to building a season simply comes from mining the best unknown stories.
In regard to the direction they provide to their research department, Waters says they tell them “to find us the best stories we weren’t told in school, or pitch us a story about someone we know so much about, and it’s a story that we never heard,” he said during the show’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television virtual event. “Of the stories we like the most, we find theme out of that.”
Some of this season’s notable episodes include “Bad Blood,” which features the story about Cleopatra’s (Aubrey Plaza) younger sister Arsinoe (Olivia Trujillo) scheming her way in and out of power in Ancient Egypt. Also, very timely with what’s going on right now,...

Even though Derek Waters is always excited to pursue new things, he still loves being able to come back to making “Drunk History” and getting to enjoy the collaborative process. “I’m just surrounded by people that I just want to keep working with,” he tells us in our recent webchat (watch the video above), which include production designer Monica Sotto, costume designer Christina Mongini and cinematographer Logan Schneider. Even with all of these efforts, Waters still loves mining the humor of the show’s premise. “I still believe in the comedy of this feeling like a community college trying as hard as they can to make a history show, it’s just not going that well.”

Comedy Central dominated the Emmy race for Best Variety Series through most of the 2000s thanks to the indomitable “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and its successor “The Colbert Report.” But the category was split between talk shows and sketch shows starting in 2015, and since then Emmy voters’ favor has shifted to HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” which won the talk prize for the last four years, and NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” which won the sketch award for the last three. Can “Drunk History” bring the sketch series title back to the cable network?
“SNL” seems unbeatable these days in the sketch category, routinely showing up at or near the top of the nominations tallies for all shows on television, right up there with the technically audacious production values of shows like “Game of Thrones” and “Westworld.” But Comedy Central actually beat the venerable “SNL...

Comedy Central and Refinery29 have signed a digital content partnership to produce two comedy series featuring an all-female lineup of comedians, Variety has learned exclusively.
Slated to premiere spring 2020, the series will be co-branded and distributed on both Comedy Central and Refinery29’s digital platforms. While neither series is being eyed for a linear run at present, a release at some point on the ViacomCBS-owned cable channel isn’t out of the question given that Comedy Central owns the rights, according to sources.
The first series, titled “Cc x R29: Taking the Stage,” is a short-form stand-up series featuring a curation of showcase clips from a lineup of comedians. The second, “Cc x R29: Speak Up,” will be a short-form storytelling series in which the comedians will share stories about speaking up and being heard.

Comedy Central has picked up a 16-episode seventh season of Emmy-winning series Drunk History. The renewal is part of a first-look, all-media deal the network has signed with series’ co-creator Derek Waters.
In partnership with Comedy Central Productions, the network’s new studio-production arm, Waters will develop premium comedy content for TV and digital platforms via his Be Nice or Leave production company.
“Derek Waters has repeatedly proven his comedic genius as a creator, actor, and director across multiple platforms through our hit, Drunk History. Well, on Derek Water’s long-running Drunk History, it’s the inebriated who make history — or at least try to remember it.
Through 74 episodes over the last 6 years, Waters has created one of the benchmark series for Comedy Central, sometimes three historical look-backs an episode, with an intriguing mix of events we didn’t see on the timelines in high school or college, whether it’s Gloria Steinem going undercover at the Playboy Club or this past seaosn’s opener “Are You Afraid of the Drunk?” which follows a Mary Shelley sex romp party was the launch pad for her initial telling of Frankenstein. Mary Shelley brought “Frankenstein” to life, but her own life was found wanting when it comes to Nat Geo. The author was supposed to be the subject of the network’s newest “Genius” season, the network’s scripted biography series, following Picasso and Einstein before him. But in February, Nat Geo announced it would focus on the life of the late, great Aretha Franklin instead.
On Tuesday, National Geographic Global Network President Courteney Monroe explained why the Gothic novelist was dropped.
“We were super-excited about Mary Shelley, a fascinating person, a fascinating life. The fact is that we just couldn’t find a way to crack it creatively for an eight- to 10-hour limited series,” she said. “And our feeling was if we couldn’t do it in a really excellent way and do it right, then we shouldn’t do it.”
“So that’s what happened. We really tried.

Derek Waters loves TV history — so much so that he even keeps a collection of old TV Guide magazines at home. As the co-creator and host of Comedy Central’s Emmy-nominated “Drunk History,” it’s perhaps no surprise that Waters reveres classic TV — particularly from his childhood era of the 1980s.
But here’s where he draws the line at nostalgia: Reboots and remakes.
“I hope some day, I’m alive to see some sort of law passed where something, be it ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ once a show or movie [has been given] some sort of accolade, it can be shut,” Waters told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “You’re not allowed to touch this. Leave it alone.”
Waters’ suggestion: Just re-release a DVD of the original instead. “Don’t change it,” he added. “I’m trying to think of one thing where I’m so glad they rebooted that, and...

Martin Starr and John Francis Daley joined forces for a miniature “Freaks and Geeks” reunion in the latest episode of “Drunk History,” but instead of returning to high school history class, they’re staging a scene from the Civil War.
In Tuesday’s episode of “Drunk History,” Daley and Starr act out the story of “Andrews’ Raiders,” one of the great locomotive chases in history that also served as the basis for “The General,” Buster Keaton’s silent classic. This version of the story, though, has a bit more flatulence in it.
“I want three people who know how to use a train…I’m already going to burp and s—.” Daley acts out via the narration of comedian Jon Gabrus along with host Derek Waters.

Check out the full list of Emmy Award 2019 nominations here. It's a good year for dragons, assassins, and nuclear meltdowns.
As someone on an HBO show once said: "The king stay the king." After briefly losing its title in 2018 as the network to receive the most Emmy nominations, HBO is back at the 2019 Emmys with a vengeance.
HBO leads all content providers in 2019 with an astounding and record-breaking 137 total nominations. That number is, of course, buoyed by the equally astonishing 32 nominations garnered for Game of Thrones' final season. HBO's numbers are the most eye popping but there are some other surprises throughout this year's nominations.
Schitt's Creek and Fleabag are unlikely but still welcome introductions to the Emmys with both garnering multiple nominations including nods for Outstanding Comedy Series. Last year's Outstanding Comedy winner The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will welcome stiff competition in what is possibly...

On this week’s Drunk History, Derek Waters welcomes Brian Tyree Henry—star of Atlanta, Mvp of the new Child’s Play movie, and generally charming human being—to the couch to drunkenly retell the story of how soul legend Sam Cooke wrote “A Change Is Gonna Come.” (You could easily get more wasted than Henry if you took a…...

Few disciplines are as tough to shine in as sketch comedy. Often, being funny isn’t often enough. What makes a sketch resonate comes down to the characters. But while sitcoms build arcs over seasons, short skits require viewers to buy into new characters constantly. It’s a tricky art.
For decades, “Saturday Night Live” has blended one-offs with recurring characters that grow over time with takes on real-life pop culture and political figures — and has dominated the variety sketch series Emmy wins for the past two years. The ones that draw the biggest response, from Kate McKinnon’s Ms. Rafferty to Kenan Thompson’s version of Steve Harvey, elicit laughter but also a sense of history (even if short-term), as viewers relate their actions and dialogue in the most recent sketches to earlier ones.

Derek Waters built “Drunk History” as a means to share true stories with a wider audience.
“The reason I like it is we’re expanding how to tell stories and also making the world of history bigger,” the creator told IndieWire. “I grew up in a lot of slower, special ed classes and had a hard time understanding why I should care about this [or that] story. I had a hard time listening. History is so important, but it’s rarely taught in a way that makes you go, ‘Oh, these people aren’t that different from you and I.'”
Now, as the series prepares to launch the second half of its sixth season, Waters has resolved to only keep making the show if he believes he can improve upon what’s come before. “I promised Comedy Central I would never do another season unless I could outdo the last one,...
