The (Extra Hot) Cannes Hot List: Nic Cage, Kristen Stewart and Paul Rudd Films to Heat up the Market
The Cannes Film Festival is bracing for what could be its most disruptive edition in decades, with freelance festival employees threatening strike action that could derail the opening night ceremony, and the entire French industry on tenterhooks ahead of an expected new wave of #MeToo allegations against some of the country’s biggest stars, including a few with films in competition this year.
Well, at least the market looks promising. Judging by the number and quality of projects pitching at the 2024 Cannes film market (May 14-22), this could be a banner year for the Marché du Film.

“The Outrun,” the adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s deeply raw and lyrical 2016 memoir about addiction, recovery and nature, premiered in Sundance this year to stellar reviews, with many awards prophets already suggesting that the film could take Saoirse Ronan — who stars in and produces the film — back to the Oscars in 2025.
For producer Sarah Brocklehurst, the Sundance premiere also marked something of an enjoyable full circle, landing almost five years to the day after the Sundance 2019 debut of “Animals.” The film, which screens at the Berlin Film Festival, also marks the first feature from her Brock Media banner.
“Animals,” based on Emma Jane Unsworth’s novel about hedonism and friendship (described as a “Withnail for Girls”) and starring Holliday Grainger and Alia Shawkat, may not have been Brocklehurst’s debut film (that was 2012’s “Black Pond”), but she claims it was a career game-changer. “It proved to myself and probably...

Though she’d dreamed of owning a Spanish Revival home, there was something about the boxy, modern house that Anonymous Content manager Meredith Rothman couldn’t shake. Maybe it was the floor-to-ceiling windows. Or the abundance of natural light. Or the fact that it was tucked neatly into a canyon in Beverly Hills, conjuring up memories of her childhood home in Bel Air. Rothman asked interior designer Lauren Waters for her thoughts. “I assured her it was a wonderful blank canvas for intriguing furniture and great art,” says Waters.
That advice sealed the deal for Rothman, who tasked Waters with transforming the 2,500-square-foot spec house into a home that would serve as space to unwind, enable her to host the occasional soiree and showcase her burgeoning art collection, which includes works by Analia Saban and John Baldessari, as well as a charcoal drawing by her grandmother Luddie Waters, who was...

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022) is one film every movie viewer should see. Besides its top lead cast, the movie portrays a simple, realistic storyline that isn’t common in Hollywood. It isn’t every day movie fans see a plot centered around an older woman and a younger man. It’s one of the reasons Sophie Hyde‘s British sex comedy-drama, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, stands out. Its 97-minute runtime centers around an older woman who hires a younger, attractive sex worker to help her achieve pleasurable sex, which is part of her bucket list. Written by Katy Brand,...

Fresh off a standout performance in director Sophie Hyde's affecting drama, "Good Luck To You, Leo Grande," Emma Thompson is set to dramatically switch things up. The esteemed actress will soon play the role of "a widowed fisherman" who becomes involved in a teen's kidnapping in the action thriller "The Fisherwoman." Announced via Variety in early February, the film will be directed by Brian Kirk, who's known mostly for his work on TV shows including "Luther," "Dexter," and "Game of Thrones." And while little is known about the project at this time, it's intriguing if only for Thompson, who continues to make diverse and interesting role choices.
The actress has always sought out challenging projects. When asked for her advice to up-and-coming actors, she told BAFTA back in 2013, "Make your choices carefully and don't do things just because they might pay well, do the things that really interest you.

I didn't wake up early for the Oscar nominations today. By the time the announcements roll around each year, I have a hard time mustering up the energy to care. It's not because I don't appreciate the feeling of joy and excitement when a deserving dark horse contender makes the cut (go Stephani Hsu!), or when a hidden gem gets a well-earned spot.
It's because by the time we reach this point in the Oscar conversation, the short list of nominees seems to have already hardened and crystalised before our very eyes, leaving great films out in the cold along the way. We may not have known who had a nod on lock before waking up this morning, but we could all count the contenders on two hands. The result is a discourse that eliminates certain actors and titles from the running before they're even truly considered, simply by failing...

Daryl McCormack is grinning his head off. The Irish actor has just been nominated for the Bafta Rising Star award for his performance in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, an intense, subversive two-hander in which he plays a sensitive sex worker opposite Emma Thompson. The nod is for an accolade previously given to Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright and Tom Hardy at the start of their careers, and Bafta have put him up in a very swanky London suite. “I’m in this insane room that’s on the corner, so I can see the South Bank behind me,” he says, lifting his laptop up to flaunt the view of skyscrapers at dusk. “The butler, I was practically shouting at him when he showed me the room, like, ‘This is insane! There’s no need!’ I come from, honestly, humble beginnings, and I love this stuff. I’m sending videos to my mum,...

Seen as the main precursor to what you might expect on Oscar nomination morning, the nominations for the 2023 Ee BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, and Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” gained even more steam as a major awards threat, with an impressive 14 nominations in total. The movie equals Ang Lee’s 2001 “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the film not the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.
Other films that had a strong showing in overall noms include “The Banshees of Insiherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10 each), “Elvis” (9 noms), and “Tar” (5 noms), but possibly the most surprising inclusion was that both leads of the acclaimed indie “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” — Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack — scored leading actress and actor nods, respectively.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2022, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Three years after the pandemic broke out, things––including moviegoing––are finally starting to feel normal again. It would have been an even more joyous occasion if only 2022 has yielded a stronger crop of films to offer those rushing back to theaters.
Of course many, many good films came out in the last twelve months; great ones too––entertaining, informative, artistic works that anyone would be doing themselves a favor by checking out. But films that make you go for the M(asterpiece) word, that you know right away would be top 10 material? Not that many by my count. Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness, for example, is super fun and features awards-worthy performances from Zlatko Buric and Dolly De Leon, although I’m not sure if...

Christmas and Emma Thompson seem to go together. The celebrated two-time Oscar-winning actress costarred not only in 2019’s Last Christmas, but in what become a certified holiday classic, 2003’s Love Actually, a yuletide-set romantic comedy that has become so beloved, returning year after year, that ABC News recently devoted an entire Diane Sawyer hour to examining it.
On top of that, Thompson takes on the choice role of Agatha Trunchbull in the new film version of the Tony Award-winning musical, Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical, which is in theaters internationally and starts streaming on Netflix — when else? — Christmas Day.

A star maestro. Multiverse dwellers. Fearless journalists who historically propelled the #MeToo movement. 2022 has supplied an embarrassment of riches when it comes to complex roles written for women, brought to life by a diverse array of actresses. In separate conversations with Variety, several of the names leading the awards conversation offered insights into their characters, reflecting on the most challenging aspects of their parts.
Playing the retired schoolteacher Nancy who hires a sex worker in Sophie Hyde’s “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” Emma Thompson recognized the utmost significance of a role that focused on a woman’s sexual pleasure.

Actress and playwright Gurira recalls a moment on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever set — spoiler alert! — when her co-star reiterated to her the true meaning of acting royalty.
Danai Gurira and Angela Bassett
I knew her as Tina, as Stella, a powerhouse who always delivered memorable, resonant, unforgettable, iconic performances. I looked to her as the North Star for all a Black girl could aspire to be in this field. The first time I met Angela Bassett was in 2009 when I was reprising the role of Martha Pentecost, a role she originated, in the Broadway revival of Joe Turner Has Come and Gone. Naturally, I was intimidated to meet this astounding artist in this particular circumstance. I could never have imagined how approachable and kind she turned out to be. She spoke to me like a peer, with generosity and curiosity.
