Prequels are all the rage these days.
We love returning to beloved universes that feel familiar but have new stories to tell.
Prime Video's A League Of Their Own was a terrific example of taking the framework of the source material and transforming it into something that feels relevant to modern audiences and uplifts voices that were not always given a platform in the eras being depicted.
Similarly, Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies focuses on the outcasts, the nerds, the ambitious, and the women who don't feel like conforming to the status quo -- or, because of who they are, haven't been allowed.
Why shouldn't they band together and create something new and special to celebrate each other?
Musically, we get the familiar opening number, "Grease Is The Word," and it manages to set up all the central characters. The lyrics take on new meaning, and it's like we're...

Jack Nicholson has had one of the more varied careers in Hollywood. He has appeared in smaller, intense independent dramas, broad comedies, Oscar-bait films, surreal experimental movies, and several well-moneyed Hollywood blockbusters. Indeed, Nicholson was involved in one of the more notable blockbusters of all time, Tim Burton's 1989 film "Batman," where he played the Joker. Famously, Nicholson managed to negotiate a cut of the film's merchandising profits into his salary, making him a very, very rich man.
Nicholson has a talent for playing intense types of characters. He can be friendly or threatening, but he is an expert in taking up a room. In a way, his performance in Alexander Payne's 2002 dramedy "About Schmidt" might be his best, as it's the one notable time he's played a deliberately dull, buttoned-down character.
Given Nicholson's stature as a celebrity, one might think the actor had free reign to select whatever projects he wanted.

Alberta is entering a whole new world of family drama.
She's just discovered she has living relatives on Ghosts Season 2 Episode 18. And whenever any relative from the ghosts visits Woodstone Manor, things don't always go as planned.
We love all the truth bombs and shenanigans that come from these visits.
"Alberta's Descendant" kept us fed! The episode was upbeat and fun; everyone from the Woodstone group seemed ready to get into Alberta's latest story.
And the two arrivals of Alicia (Alberta's relative) and Todd added plenty of energy to the plot. While it's not the most in-depth episode, the A and B stories offered a good time.
Alicia getting a crush on Todd was a recipe for chaos.
We're talking about the same guy who has Alberta's toenails saved in a bag and a large tattoo of Alberta on his back. Everything about him was a walking red flag since...

Plot: The musical series takes place four years before the original “Grease”. In 1954, before rock ‘n’ roll ruled, before the T-Birds were the coolest in the school, four fed-up, outcasts dare to have fun on their own terms, sparking a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever.
Review: My expectations for Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies were very low. I have an appreciation for the classic feature film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, as well as for the Michelle Pfieffer-led sequel. The years have not been kind to some elements from Grease, but that has not stopped people from attempting stage productions and even a maligned live version on Fox. Now, as the streaming wars continue to mine their intellectual property for any potential series, the Paramount+ prequel series Rise of the Pink Ladies aims to correct some of the less diverse elements of Grease for a new generation of fans.

“Love & Mercy” director Bill Pohlad is back with another offbeat musician biopic called “Dreamin’ Wild,” which was just acquired by Roadside Pictures (who also released “Love & Mercy”).
This time around Pohland is charting the life of Donnie and Joe Emerson, who recorded an album called “Dreamin’ Wild” in the late 1970s at a state-of-the-art studio built by their father on the family’s 1600-acre farm in rural Washington. The album didn’t do anything and Donnie embarked on an equally obscure solo career. But in 2012, the album was rediscovered as a lost classic and re-released by hip Seattle-based record label Light in the Attic Records. (Ariel Pink also covered a song from the album around that time.)
“While the album’s rediscovery brings hopes of second chances, it also brings long-buried emotions as Donnie, his wife Nancy, brother Joe, and father Don Sr. come to terms with the...

Roadside Attractions has picked up the North American rights to Dreamin’ Wild, the Casey Affleck and Zooey Deschanel-starring music biopic that debuted in Venice.
Bill Pohlad directed the film that is set to hit theaters Aug. 4. Roadside released Pohlad’s 2014 feature Love & Mercy, a portrait of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys that marked his feature directorial debut.
Dreamin’ Wild captures the real-life story of musical duo Donnie and Joe Emerson, whose family leveraged their farm in the 1970s to produce the brothers’ record Dreamin’ Wild. The album languished until it was rediscovered nearly 30 years after its release, creating an unexpected music career for the Emerson brothers.
“I’m honored to be back with Roadside Attractions for my next film since Love & Mercy. I’m hoping that audiences will connect with this family’s heart-felt story as much as with Donnie’s extraordinary music,” Pohlad said in a statement on Thursday.

Roadside Attractions has acquired North American rights to “Dreamin’ Wild,” a drama about the rediscovery of singer and songwriter Donnie Emerson after years spent in obscurity. The film, which was directed by Bill Pohlad, a filmmaker who unearthed gold from another music industry saga with his 2014 Brian Wilson film “Love & Mercy,” premiered at Venice. “Dreamin’ Wild,” a reference to an album that Donnie released with his brother Joe Emerson, will open nationwide only in theaters on Aug. 4.
Roadside previously released “Love & Mercy,” making this a reunion for the filmmaker and distributor. The film centers on the critical reevaluation of “Dreamin’ Wild,” and the impact that second chance has on Donnie, his wife Nancy, brother Joe, and father Don Sr. as they must come to terms their new fame. Pohlad uses two different actors to explore the real-life characters in different time periods, just as he did in “Love & Mercy...

An old enemy and a new flame entered the 126’s orbit on Tuesday’s 9-1-1: Lone Star, with neither encounter ending as expected.
Let’s start with that old enemy: Thanks to the city’s new partnership with Paragon, we saw a whole lot of Pearce (aka the handsomest man alive) this week, and while I’m always down to look at Andy Favreau’s face, Tommy was less excited to keep running into the “rat bastard” at every call.

The good news is that we got a nice dose of medical emergencies.
Tommy, Nancy, and T.K.'s beef with the profiteering private emergency company, Paragon, meant that much of 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 4 Episode 10 had them duking it out for every call.
But the second and only other storyline was Owen wondering whether or not his new wealthy love interest thought of him as a sex worker.
Owen's storyline was the weakest aspect. It felt like a bit that ran too long, and it was barely worth chuckling at in the first place.
Of course, the team got a good laugh or two out of what was happening, and despite what the arc did for Owen, it's still fun to see him more immersed in the squad.
We even got a feel for what the house is like when he and Mateo feel like actual friends,...

Netflix's "Stranger Things" is gearing up to release its fifth and final season but it looks like fan-favorite couple Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers (played by Natalie Dyer and Charlie Heaton) might not go the distance. However, even if the fictional pair's romance on the show is up in the air, the characters' actors are dating in real life, and their relationship is still going strong.
Dyer and Heaton grew close around the time season two of "Stranger Things" began filming in 2016 and the pair's romance became public early the following year. Since then, the two have been boyfriend and girlfriend, though in recent years Dyer and Heaton have been very careful to keep their relationship more private. They last made major public appearances together in the summer of 2022, though they were also photographed together in New York in January 2023.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
After the misfire that was The Amityville Haunting, I was worried that the so-called unofficial sequels in “the franchise” would all be absolute dreck. Obviously we’re grading on a scale when it comes to low budget Dtv films, but there’s still plenty of room for ingenuity and surprises regardless of funding.
Thankfully The Amityville Asylum, a 2013 UK production, represents something of a rebound. Writer/director Andrew Jones had abandoned found footage in favour of a more traditional approach to tell the story of Lisa Templeton (Sophia Del Pizzo), a young woman who interviews for a job as a night cleaner at the relatively new psychiatric institute, High Hopes.
Obviously since this is an Amityville film, there’s a tangential connection...

What exactly is going on between Owen (Rob Lowe) and the new woman in his life on 9-1-1: Lone Star? That’s the question everyone — including Owen! — has in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the March 28 episode. “Who doesn’t like being compared to Richard Gere?” Mateo (Julian Works) wonders. “I don’t,” Owen says, “particularly when it comes to exchanging cash for romantic favors.” When the others ask what’s going on, the captain tries to insist, “A gentleman never discloses.” But Paul (Brian Michael Smith) saw him cozying up to the bartender. T.K. (Ronen Rubinstein) defends his dad, that he would never have to pay. Then Nancy (Brianna Baker) reveals, “That bartender has more money than God apparently,” and Mateo clarifies, “I wasn’t saying Pretty Woman Richard Gere, I was saying American Gigolo Richard Gere.” So who is this woman? Kendra Harrington,...

Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon have starred as Carrie Bradshaw and Miranda Hobbes in Sex & the City and its sequels since the ’90s. The two actors have something else in common, too. They both began their careers when they were very young and appeared in a movie together as young teens.
Parker first appeared on Broadway in The Innocents when she was 11 years old. Two years later she played the starring role in Annie. She went on to star in the early ’80s sitcom Square Pegs before her roles in major films such as Footloose and Girls Just Want to Have Fun.
Nixon was also a preteen actor with her first role being in an ABC Afterschool Special. Her film debut was in 1980’s Little Darlings, and in that same year, she first appeared on Broadway.
