Celebrated Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap was in vintage free, frank and forthright form at a masterclass in Toronto on Sunday.

Kashyap’s cop noir “Kennedy,” which had its world premiere at Cannes earlier this year, is on an extended festival run. It opened the 12th edition of Bmo International Film Festival of South Asia (Iffsa), where he delivered the masterclass. Kashyap was in conversation with festival patron, acclaimed filmmaker Anup Singh (“The Song of Scorpions”). Mumbai, Aug 7 (Ians) Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap, whose films like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Ugly’, ‘Dev.D’, ‘Black Friday’ and others have strengthened the parallel cinema in India and have cultivated an enormous fan base, is set to visit the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Iffm) as his upcoming film ‘Kennedy’ has been selected as the closing film at the festival.

Bifan has established itself as one of the most significant festivals in Asia regarding the genre cinema of the region, with their program always being quite interesting through its focus on Korean cinema firstly and then of Japan and the rest of the region, along with a number of international titles. As such, the fact that the local industry is in trouble was more than evident this year, when genre movies in particular suffered, mostly due to issues with writing and also due to financial ones. It is true that Korea's top filmmakers are at the top of the world, but it has become obvious that below that level, the quality drops significantly.
Nevertheless, the aforementioned does not mean that the programs was without a number of gems. “Iron Mask” about a kendo athlete carrying a trauma, “Her Hobby” with its transition from a family drama to a horror and...

A police noir set in the black and bribable nights of Mumbai, Anurag Kashyap's 27th feature “Kennedy” is a shoddy portrait of a cop turned contract killer. Premiering at a Midnight Screening at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, the film is Kashyap's hasty pandemic project that would have greatly benefitted from some ruthless rewriting and nuanced acting.

The audience may love Anurag Kashyap’s two-part magnum opus ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ but Anurag, the poster boy of independent films, “hates” it.
The auteur recently graced the Cannes premiere of his film ‘Kennedy’ where it received an 8-minute standing ovation.
Talking about the experience of having ‘Kennedy’ screened at Grand Theatre Lumiere in the midnight screening section, Kashyap made a self-deprecating joke mentioning his last film ‘Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat’.
He told Brut India: “It was really overwhelming, it’s my first film at Theatre Lumiere with 2,500 people appreciating the film. The numbers were more than the entire audience that saw my last film ‘Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat’. I broke that entire record in one screening.”
He further spoke about ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ which is perhaps his most successful film.

Uday Shetty is an angry man, consumed by his desire to kill the man who killed his son. Actually, Shetty has an appetite for killing in general that shocks even his fellow police officers, whose own methods are unnervingly direct. They all appreciate the efficiency of simply tipping criminals, or those who fail to pay protection money, into the river – it saves time – but only Uday Shetty rhapsodizes about the wonderful moment when you see a victim die and the light in his eyes turns off, as if you had flicked a switch. Only Uday Shetty goes to shake down an uncooperatively honest politician and ends up massacring his entire family. “No witnesses!” Shetty says abruptly, when the chief accuses him of being a monster. No witnesses indeed.
The curious twist in Anurag Kashyap’s Cannes Film Festival Midnight selection Kennedy is that Uday Shetty is not supposed to exist.

Cannes, May 25 (Ians) In a candid interview with ‘Deadline’ at Cannes, Sunny Leone talked about how one call from ‘Bigg Boss’ enabled her to transition from an adult film star of some 12 year’s standing (2001-13) to a mainstream film star with 30 projects behind her, walking the red carpet of the world’s most prestigious film festival.
In Cannes for the world premiere of Anurag Kashyap’s cop noir movie ‘Kennedy’ in the Midnight Section, Leone told ‘Deadline’ how ‘Bigg Boss’ executives relentlessly pursued her. They even sent the Canadian Indian actress a powerpoint presentation to convince her to come on board.
She remembered telling her then boyfriend, now husband, who urged her to commit: “‘You’re out of your mind — I’m not going to India, they’ll hate me.’ I’ve already gone through so much hate in that community.”

It’s 11 years since Anurag Kashyap’s electrifying five-hour crime opus “Gangs of Wasseypur” jolted Cannes audiences, triggering renewed global interest in Indian genre cinema and vaulting Kashyap to auteur status with several subsequent films granted A-list festival premiere status — even if none quite matched his breakout feature for ambition or execution. Following a run of lower-profile potboilers in a range of genres that saw him through the pandemic era, Kashyap’s elaborately conceived, brashly violent policier “Kennedy” aims to return him to the art-pulp elite, starting with an obliging premiere slot in Cannes’ Midnight section.
The result is a declarative but somewhat disappointing return to underworld territory. Enlivened by some propulsive action, a hip-hop-inflected song score and a combative streak of anti-institutional protest — in a Covid-era context that proves one of the script’s more interesting specifics — “Kennedy” is ultimately weighed down by hit-or-miss performances and convoluted plotting that...

Actor Rahul Bhat, is set to go to the Cannes Film Festival for the second time as his upcoming film ‘Kennedy’ recently became India’s official selection at the Festival De Cannes 2023. The film, which recently got its poster unveiled, served as a dichotomy for the actor as he felt that it ripped him apart and stitched him together at the same time.
‘Kennedy’ is essentially a police noir film, a space that filmmaker Anurag Kashyap revels in and finds his expertise.
Rahul has worked with Kashyap in the 2013 film ‘Ugly’ and ‘Dobaaraa’. Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap is back in Cannes with thriller “Kennedy,” starring Rahul Bhat in the title role.
The film, which also stars Sunny Leone, will play in the Midnight Screenings strand of the festival. Several films directed by Kashyap have played at Cannes, including “Psycho Raman” (2016), “Ugly” (2013), “Bombay Talkies” (2013) and “Gangs of Wasseypur” (2012). In addition, several films produced by him have made it to the Croisette, including “Masaan” (2015), “The Lunchbox” (2013), “Monsoon Shootout” (2013), “The Congress” (2013) and “Udaan” (2010).
The plot of “Kennedy” is being kept under wraps at the moment. “Kennedy is a ghost in the system looking for redemption,” is how Kashyap describes the film to Variety.
The filmmaker says that the character of Kennedy has been an obsession with him for years and was born when fellow Indian filmmaker Sudhir Mishra hired him to write a cop story set in the 1980s. That film never got made but the character stayed with Kashyap.

Dobaaraa
Starring Taapsee Pannu, Pavail Gulati, Rahul Bhat
Directed by Anurag Kashyap
Time travel has always been tricky on screen. It has never looked more tangled and confounding than Dobaaraa, a time-travel saga trapped in transit, and so frozen in its own inner conflicts that one feels all travel should be banned indefinitely.
Taapsee Pannu wakes up one morning looking suitable bewildered. We know the feeling. It’s the confusion we felt after watching Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet. The puzzle piles up quicker than rubble at a construction site. It is up to us to pick our way through the stockpile of confusions.
Essentially the plot is a mindboggler. There is a 12-year old boy from the 1990s who connects with Taapsee Pannu twenty years later through an old television set. Their bonding is a mix of déjà vu and dejaa-more-confusion.
In this way Doordarshan meets time travel in...

Film: ‘Dobaaraa’ (Releasing in theatres). Duration: 132 minutes.
Director: Anurag Kashyap. Cast: Taapsee Pannu, Rahul Bhat, Pavail Gulati and Sukant Goel.
Ians rating: ***1/2
Anurag Kashyap has returned ‘dobara’ (once again) with ‘Dobaaraa’, two years after his last streaming movie ‘Choked’ on Netflix. The film not just marks his reunion with his ‘Manmarziyaan’ actress Taapsee Pannu, but also marks his return to the genre of thrillers, his last outing being the Vicky Kaushal and Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer ‘Raman Raghav 2.0’.
The film is an official remake of the Spanish mystery-drama film ‘Mirage’.
Kashyap, who is known for his offbeat stories, doesn’t miss a beat in the film as he sketches up a fine thriller that will keep you hooked till the last frame and will linger in your thoughts long after you have stepped out of the cinema.
The treatment rendered to the film is such that you...

Anurag Kashyap’s Dobaaraa featuring Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati is an official remake of the 2018 Spanish film ‘Mirage’. The film could find a slot in the time travel zone or going by the last scene, it could be a ‘Baar Baar Dekho Returns’. This time around Anurag Kashyap has dabbled with the latest global fad with the term ‘multiverse’ or ‘parallel universe’ or still a ‘time travel’ of sorts. It seems Taapsee is also got into a time loop what with Looop Lapeta and now this.
Dobaaraa is this multi-temporal film, even the title has layered implications; Dobaaraa means ‘again’ as also ‘Do (2) Baaraa (12)’, which is important to the premise, with characters simultaneously existing in parallel universes and manipulating events in the past to alter the future.
Anurag seems to have retained the basic (Mirage) plot and adapted it to the Indian mindset, who may not be too comfortable...
