Kyle Rittenhouse, the 21-year-old gun rights activist who was acquitted for fatally shooting two people and injuring another at racial justice protests in 2020, faced intense backlash when he gave a speech at the University of Memphis on Wednesday.
Rittenhouse’s appearance at a campus event organized by the university’s chapter of Turning Point USA, a conservative student organization, ignited widespread student protests. Despite the outcry, the university stated that it was legally obligated to allow Rittenhouse to speak due to the First Amendment and Tennessee’s Campus Free Speech Act.
At the event, Rittenhouse discussed the importance of the Second Amendment and criticized the Black Lives Matter movement. Students expressed their opposition to his presence and highlighted concerns about gun violence in the community and his promotion of what they perceived as racist views. Videos shared online captured students booing, walking out, challenging Rittenhouse’s statements and questioning information...

The man who is being charged with the subway choking that caused homeless man Jordan Neely’s death is publicly raising money for his legal defense.
Daniel Penny, a Marine veteran, has already brought in over $2.9 million to fund his defense for the charges of criminally negligent homicide and second-degree manslaughter he is facing.
Penny is due to appear in court on October 25 and has already pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.
Andrew Stengel, a New York City defense lawyer, stated that the money that Penny does not use for his legal case, will go toward “a mental health advocacy program in New York City,” which is specified on his fundraising page.
Neely was a homeless man who was struggling with his mental health. He entered the subway at the 2nd Avenue station and while on the train he made multiple threats to other passengers. One of the people on board was Penny,...

On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Daniel Perry to 25 years in prison for the murder of Black Lives Matter protester Garrett Foster. However, it is unclear how much time Perry will serve, as Texas Governor Greg Abbott has promised he will pardon Perry if the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles send him a request.
On Tuesday’s first day of the sentencing hearing, the prosecution asked District Judge Clifford Brown to give Perry a minimum of 25 years in prison, saying he was a “loaded gun” who had the potential to harm people again,...

For Whitney Mitchell, the evening of July 25, 2020, replays in her mind over and over. It’s the day her husband Garrett Foster was shot and killed in front of her during a protest against police brutality in Austin, Texas. “It’s difficult to watch somebody that you love — who was the love of your life and your best friend and who was everything to you — die in front of you, and you can’t do anything about it,” Mitchell tells Rolling Stone.

Republicans are rallying around Daniel Perry, a man convicted of murdering Black Lives Matter protester Garrett Foster in 2020. On Monday night, Foster’s actions got a resounding endorsement from the most notorious protest shooter in recent memory: Kyle Rittenhouse.
Rittenhouse appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight to discuss Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s proposal to pardon Perry, citing his belief that Perry acted in self-defense. Rittenhouse himself was acquitted in 2021 of homicide charges related to the deaths of two men he shot and killed during BLM protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

On A Recent “Weekend Update” segment for Saturday Night Live, Michael Che relayed the news that Ronna McDaniel had just won a close reelection as chair of the Republican National Committee. He then ran down the list of McDaniel’s failed challengers, including some real ones (MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell) and a few joke picks (Kevin Sorbo, Kyle Rittenhouse). Among the latter was “Twitter user @CAT_TURD_2.”
That mention got a big laugh. To most, it probably sounded like a throwaway gag: the writers inventing a crass, right-wing internet troll...

HBO Max has announced the end to its shortlived Gossip Girl reboot after just two seasons, bringing joy and relief to many fans of the original.
Since the 2021 premiere of the sequel to the original six-season drama, which starred Blake Lively, Penn Badgley and Leighton Meester, many viewers have criticised it for “ruining a classic”.
The Independent’s Adam White wrote that the “boring” reboot “saps its juicy premise of all its fun” in his one-star review.
On Thursday (19 January), executive producer Joshua Safran – who also produced the original show – shared the news of the reboot’s cancellation, tweeting: “So here’s the goss: it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce Gossip Girl will not be continuing on HBO Max.”
In a follow-up post, Safran added: “We are currently looking for another home, but in this climate, that might prove an uphill battle, and so if this is the end,...

Tom Cruise has admitted he felt ‘nervous’ as a young actor when he first met Paul Newman.
The Mission: Impossible and Top Gun: Maverick star had auditioned for Newman’s film Harry & Son (1984). The role in question was that of Harry’s (Newman) son, Howard Keach – but Cruise ultimately missed out.
Despite Newman being “interested” in Cruise’s “point of view”, the role eventually went to Robby Benson.
Cruise said: “I auditioned for Harry & Son mostly because I wanted to meet Paul. I was nervous. Starting out as a young actor, you want people to like you, you want people to like your work, you want to be accepted.”
He added: “Taps had come out and I think Risky Business. I walked into the office. There’s Joanne [Woodward] knitting, and Newman with a chain around his neck with a beer can opener on it. He was wearing an off-white sweater and jeans.

Channel 4 has enjoyed a swipe at the ongoing cost of living crisis in a message marking the 100th anniversary of the BBC.
The broadcaster celebrated its centenary on 18 October, having originally been established back in 1922.
In a tweet, rival broadcaster Channel 4, which was not founded until 60 years after the BBC, wished it a “Happy Birthday”, but took the chance to make a joke about the current state of the UK.
“Happy Birthday @BBC on your 100th birthday!” wrote the official Channel 4 account, alongside a “party popper” emoji.
“When you were founded we had a King, no one knew if they could afford to put their heating on and we’d just lived through a global pandemic. Times really do change!”
The BBC itself is marking the occasion in a number of ways.

DaBaby’s New Orleans concert was reportedly cancelled due to low ticket sales.
On Tuesday (30 August), the Ticketmaster listing for the 30-year-old rapper’s show was deactivated.
“Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event,” a message on the website reads.
According to Nola.com, less than 500 people bought tickets to the concert, which was scheduled to take place on 2 September at the Smoothie King Centre arena, which has a capacity of 14,000.
The price of the tickets started at 35 (£30).
The Independent has contacted representatives for DaBaby and Ticketmaster for comment.
Last year, DaBaby – real name Jonathan Lyndale Kirk – became the subject of controversy after he made a series of homophobic comments during his set at the Rolling Loud festival in Miami.

“I Guarantee his album would outsell and outclass hers!”
After finding out he was trending on Twitter, Adams doubled down on his comments with a video. “Kid Rock is a bad-ass American alpha male patriot,” Adams, who is Australian, said in the clip.

It was the trial watched around the world. Few televised trials have had as much press and interest from the world as this one. We think of O.J. Simpson, Kyle Rittenhouse, and Casey Anthony off the cuff, and now we get to add the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial to the list. Unlike the three former trials mentioned, the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial was almost comical. The famed actor kept the world laughing with his responses and facial expressions, and it was sheer entertainment for many. Throughout the trial, of course, we learned some unflattering things about Depp and Heard but

In the wake of mass shootings in Buffalo and Texas, many people are crying out for someone to “do something.” Yet some of the loudest voices in that chorus are among the biggest hypocrites when it comes to creating an atmosphere that promulgates violence among the feeble minded.
Bill Maher gave Hollywood a shot across the bow in his Friday Real Time on HBO, calling on the entertainment industry to look at its own culture of violence as a stimulant that creates justification for violent actions in some minds.
Maher noted how the average American kid sees an estimated 200,000 acts of violence before age 18. “Hollywood is the wokest place on earth,” Maher said, pointing out the good done under those principles. “But when it comes to romanticizing gun violence, crickets.”

The documentary “Attica” about the 1971 prison riot is all too timely as America continues to grapple with inequities in its criminal justice system. It debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, followed by an October 29 theatrical release and a November 6 premiere on Showtime.

Michael Flynn, who once filmed his family at a July 4 barbecue saying the QAnon oath, “Where we go one, we go all,” said in private that the Q conspiracy theory was “total nonsense” and a “disinformation campaign created by the left.”
In a recording of a phone call purportedly between Trump lawyer Lin Wood and Flynn released late Saturday night, Trump’s disgraced former national security advisor said of QAnon, “I think it’s a disinformation campaign that the CIA created. That’s what I believe. Now, I don’t know that for a fact,...

On Monday, Nov. 29, lawyers will begin opening arguments for the much-anticipated trial of Ghislaine Maxwell, the 59-year-old former girlfriend and alleged procurer for Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced billionaire who died by suicide in prison in 2019 after being arrested on multiple sex-trafficking charges. Maxwell is charged with six counts related to sex trafficking for allegedly grooming underage girls for Epstein to sexually abuse between 1994 and 2004.
After Epstein’s arrest in 2019, much media scrutiny fell on Maxwell, who was implicated in many of his alleged victims’ statements against him. Maxwell was arrested...

Right-wing darling Kyle Rittenhouse, the teen acquitted of murder for killing two people at a racial justice protest, sent the QAnon world into a tailspin when he said in interviews that Lin Wood, a leading QAnon believer and Trump attorney who briefly represented Rittenhouse, was “insane” and had “taken advantage” of him.
That prompted right-wing Trump allies — including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, alt-right activist Jack Posobiec and former Trump White House aide Sebastian Gorka — to come out against Wood. In response, Wood has been posting through it, making wild claims without evidence.

A jury on Wednesday found three men guilty of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, who’d been shot at close range while running through a residential neighborhood in Georgia. Father and son Greg McMichael and Travis McMichael, along with their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan had each been charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment, malice murder, felony murder, and other charges. Travis McMichael was the only defendant to be convicted of malice murder.
Jurors deliberated for around 10 hours over two days after closing arguments concluded with the prosecution’s final rebuttal Tuesday morning.

Donald Trump wasted no time inviting Kyle Rittenhouse to his resort at Mar-a-Lago. The former president appeared in a Fox News interview Tuesday night in which he revealed that the teen and his mother met with him, mere days after he was acquitted of homicide and other charges for shooting three people, killing two, at a racial justice protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
“I got to know him a little bit,” Trump said. “He called, he wanted to know if he could come over and say hello. He was a fan.

There appears to be quite a bit of tension inside Fox News over the extremist views of the network’s most popular host. Host Bret Baier publicly admitted on Monday that there were internal “concerns” at the network about the Tucker Carlson-produced documentary, Patriot Purge. The controversial documentary suggested Jan. 6 was a “false flag” operation and aired on the network’s streaming platform.
During a recent interview on fellow Fox News host Brian Kilmeade’s radio show, Baier seemed a bit uncomfortable when Kilmeade asked about two network contributors, Jonah Goldberg and Stephen Hayes,...

The jury finished hearing closing arguments Tuesday morning in the trial of three white men charged with the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed Black man, on a residential street in Brunswick, Georgia. The February 2020 killing occurred while Arbery was running through the neighborhood of Satilla Shores; a father and son believed he looked like someone responsible for nearby break-ins, armed themselves, and pursued him in a pickup truck, with a neighbor joining the pursuit in a second pickup truck. Arbery was shot multiple times at close range. The case...

Kyle Rittenhouse went after his former lawyers — one of whom is Trump ally and attorney Lin Wood — telling Tucker Carlson that they had “taken advantage” of him.
Rittenhouse, who was acquitted after he shot three people, killing two of them, at a racial justice protest in Kenosha, Wis., spoke with Carlson in an interview that aired Monday night. The teen said that Wood and attorney John Pierce, who later left his case before it went to trial, “disrespected my wishes” by keeping him in jail and not bailing him out sooner.

As news crews began to clear out of Kenosha, Wisconsin, over the weekend, so too did the demonstrators who had ardently shown support for Kyle Rittenhouse last week before jurors decided to acquit the 18-year-old of all charges. The few dozen protesters who remained — most of them from the local community — marched on Sunday with one clear message: There’s much work yet to be done before Kenosha can heal.
At the helm of the demonstration was Justin Blake, the uncle of 29-year-old Jacob Blake, who was shot seven times...

The GoFundMe website has announced its ban on fundraisers for Kyle Rittenhouse has been lifted following his acquittal on Friday.
The site previously banned Rittenhouse legal defense fundraisers because he was accused of a violent crime. His exoneration in his trial on Friday cleared that hurdle.
“If someone is acquitted of those charges, as Rittenhouse was today, a fundraiser started subsequently for their legal defense and other expenses would not violate this policy,” the statement read. “A fundraiser to pay lawyers, cover legal expenses or to help with ongoing living expenses for a person acquitted of those charges could remain active as long as we determine it is not in violation of any of our other terms and, for example, the purpose is clearly stated and the correct beneficiary is added to the fundraiser.”
However, reports indicate GoFundMe has waivered on a blanket ban in such cases.

On the Thanksgiving episode of Saturday Night Live, Weekend Update‘s anchors addressed topics ranging from the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict to the new Lethal Weapon movie Mel Gibson is directing.
Colin Jost kicked things off with discussion of President Biden’s “weird” Friday. “He went under anesthesia for a colonoscopy and when he woke up, the House had passed a $2 trillion social safety net bill, the Rittenhouse verdict was announced, and a woman had technically been president for the first time ever. And while Biden was processing all that, he was rushed off to pardon a turkey named Peanut Butter,” he noted. “I mean, come on. The guy just turned 79; half the country already thinks he’s senile. You can’t drop all that on him the second he comes out of the gas.”
Jost admitted he actually can’t believe how well the day went for Biden, all things considered.

“Saturday Night Live” took on the Kyle Rittenhouse acquittal in its cold open, with Cecily Strong as Fox News’ Judge Jeanine Pirro weighing on the verdict with the trial’s controversial judge, dueling political commentators and former President Donald Trump.
“That loveable scamp was put through a nightmare of a trial,” Strong as Pirro said. She noted that he was involved in a shooting that killed two men and wounded another because he had taken the patriotic step of “protecting an empty used car lot in somebody else’s town.”
“SNL” regular Mikey Day played Judge Bruce Schroeder, whose comments and actions from the bench raised concerns about his impartiality. Day as the judge asserted that none of his moves “gave my client an unfair advantage in any way.” When Pirro noted his use of “client” rather than defendant, the judge replied, “Oh yeah, I keep doing that.”

The Saturday Night Live cold open tackled a number of the week’s headlines — the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict, Kevin McCarthy’s marathon floor speech, and Donald Trump’s rants — through the eyes of Judge Jeanine Pirro.
Cecily Strong returned to play the Fox News personality, who hosts Justice with Jeanine, as she defended Rittenhouse, acquitted of all charges in the killing of two men and injuring another in the Kenosha protests last year.
“That lovable scamp was put through a nightmare of a trial just for doing the bravest thing any American can do — protecting a used car lot in someone else’s town,” Pirro said.
Later, James Austin Johnson returned as Donald Trump, as he went on one of his characteristic attacks on the infrastructure bill, Joe Biden and Chris Christie, and then talked of his own plans for a “reboot.” Johnson won praise for his portrayal of Trump earlier this month,...

Friday night stayed mostly quiet in Los Angeles, but street protests erupted into violence in several cities across the US, most prominently in New York, Chicago and Portland, Oregon.
The night protests were in response to the Kyle Rittenhouse acquittal in Kenosha, Wisconsin earlier in the day. More protests are expected today and Sunday.
On Friday night:
In the New York borough of Queens, there were at least five arrests and some property damage. Hundreds marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan on Friday night, blocking traffic after the verdict.
In Portland, Oregon, police declared a riot in the downtown area near the Multnomah County Justice Center, authorities said. Rioters smashed a window on a city print shop and the rear window of a police vehicle. Chicago saw a mob attack a Neiman Marcus store on the Magnificent Mile. Amber Ruffin delivered an emotional statement about the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict at the start of Friday’s episode of “The Amber Ruffin Show.”
The host of the Peacock talk-variety show was on the verge of tears as she addressed the shocking acquittal of the teenager who killed two men and shot another with a rifle at a Black Lives Matter protest in Kenosha, Wisc.
Ruffin’s voice quavered at times as she delivered the raw commentary, part of what she described her “responsibility to say things that people need to know that aren’t being said.” She noted that the verdict came in Friday afternoon, shortly before she began taping her New York-based show.
“There are very big obvious truths that no one wants to say on TV, but I will,” she said. “I can’t believe I have to say this but…”
Ruffin trailed off as she fought back tears.

The final show of Bill Maher’s Real Time fall season on HBO arrived Friday night. “I will miss seeing half your faces and the roar of muffled laughter,” he joked about his masked audience. Maher returns for his spring season on January 21, 2022.
Before going, the political comedian delivered a solid show, with guest Fareed Zakaria leading off. The discussion centered on his upcoming television special, China’s Iron Fist, which debuts November 21 on CNN and CNN International,
Maher asked the obvious question. “Who will dominate the 21st century?” Zakaria called China “The most serious competition the United States has ever faced. The Chinese are doing AI, biotech, hi-speed rail – the industries of the future.”
To combat that, Zakaria prescribed, “We have to hustle, work hard, and take this seriously.” To that end, he pointed out all the advantages the US has in its universities and research, not to mention...
