Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead: Bruce Campbell-scripted comic book series gets hardcover release
Last year, genre icon Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead) wrote the six-issue comic book series DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead, which started reaching store shelves in September of 2022. Now our friends at Bloody Disgusting have learned that the six issues of the series are being gathered together in a hardcover collection that’s appropriately being referred to as the DC Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead Hardcover Collection. This hardcover book is expected to be released sometime in October.
Featuring artwork by Eisner and Harvey Award-winning artist Eduardo Risso (100 Bullets), DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead takes place in Berlin, 1944. The Nazis are flanked on all fronts by the combined Allied forces, and defeat seems inevitable. In a last-ditch effort to turn the tide of the war, Hitler and his team of evil scientists create a...

Bruce Campbell made his mark on the DC Universe with the DC Horror comic book series Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead last year, and a collected edition is on the way.
Written by Bruce Campbell, with art by comics legend Eduardo Risso, DC Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead Hardcover Collection will release in October 2023.
Created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert, Sgt. Rock first appeared in June, 1959, in DC’s anthology comic Our Army at War Issue #83. His origin was set during World War II, where Sgt. Rock and his unit, the Easy Company, fought in the European Theatre.
The press release reminds, “The character became so popular that, in 1977, the Our Army at War series was renamed Sgt. Rock, and ran under the Sgt. Rock name until 1988.”
Sgt. Rock now returns in Bruce Campbell’s DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs.

“I can quote it,” Nubia: Queen of the Amazons writer Stephanie Williams says of the first Nubia story ever published. “That’s how much I read it.”
First created by Robert Kanigher and Don Heck in the pages of 1973’s Wonder Woman #204, Nubia marked a historic moment for DC Comics at the time. This was the publisher’s first Black woman superhero. Not only that, she was initially established as Diana’s fraternal twin sister, lost to time and rival gods, returning to claim the title of Wonder Woman from her sister. For readers of the era, this marked something of a “soft reboot” for Wonder Woman, long before such a word was commonly used. It gave the creative team an excuse to re-tell Diana’s origin story, while adding new details that allowed them to bring in a substantial new character with deep ties to the title’s history.

“I was down on my luck and I just started knocking on doors,” Bruce Campbell jokes about how he ended up writing Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead for DC Comics. “If you got any work at all, anything I can do, I’ll sell you sell your comics on the street corner.”
The beloved actor and cult legend isn’t being serious. The reality is that DC Horror editor Katie Kubert, coincidentally the granddaughter of Sgt. Rock’s legendary co-creator, reached out to him thinking he’d be a good fit to write a horror comic. But despite Campbell’s superhero-ready good looks, and all the ways he’s flirted with the genre on screen during his career, wasn’t a comics expert. After looking through a DC encyclopedia breaking down potential characters, he was immediately drawn to the badass World War II hero of Sgt. Rock.

You may not be familiar with the lesser-known DC Comics character Sgt. Rock, but if you're a horror comic fan, you soon will be. The character of Sgt. Rock was created back in 1959 by Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert. His last solo series was in 1988. Sgt. Rock is a WWII soldier who fought with his East Company, and while it's possible that you don't know him, he knows a friend of yours and mine: Superman.

When Marie Javins was announced as Editor-in-Chief of DC Comics in 2020, the quote that accompanied her hiring stated, “As a young girl devouring comics of Wonder Woman, Nubia, and Supergirl, I never dreamed that decades later, I’d be at the helm of the mighty DC Comics.” A year later, on Wonder Woman’s 80th anniversary, the publisher is heading into an epic new age for Diana, Nubia, and the Amazons.

Following the success of Marvel's 'Iron Man' (Robert Downey Jr.) appearing in 10 blockbuster films since 2008, development continues on a live-action take of DC Comics "Metal Men", supported by a new 12-issue series, now available, written by Dan Didio and illustrated by Shane Davis, Michelle Delecki, with covers by Davis and Philip Tan:
"...in the new series, the 'Metal Men' discover a warehouse of old robots, older versions of themselves, that are junked and apparently left in disrepair by their creator rather than being rebuilt after their heroic battles.
"Meanwhile, a mysterious liquid 'Nth' metal has appeared in the science site at 'Challenger Mountain'…the same Challenger Mountain that came through from the 'Dark Multiverse' and landed in 'Gotham'.."
"I'm a longtime fan of the 'Metal Men'", said Didio, "With this new series, we explore the essence of what makes the 'Metal Men' human...

The Metal Men will return to the DC Universe with all the fun and weirdness you always hoped for from the team.
Dan Didio and Shane Davis separately have a history of mining the classic DC Universe, maintaining what makes them classic characters while tweaking them for modern consumption - Davis on Superman: Earth One and Didio on, among other things, the best book of the New 52 relaunch, Omac. But these updates are rarely radical departures. Omac was no longer Buddy Blank, but he was still a corporate drone dealing with girlfriend troubles fighting for world peace. So when we had a chance to talk to Davis and Didio about their new book, Metal Men, we asked about what each was drawing from to bring the classic characters to the world of 2020.

Filming on Warner Bros.’ DC Comics superhero movie “The Flash” has been pushed back to late 2019 to allow the filmmakers more time to work on the screenplay, an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.
The film never received a green light nor scheduled a release date, but was expected to start production in March of next year, however, Ezra Miller is scheduled to begin work on the third installment of the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise in July. The film is now eyeing release in 2021.
Created in 1956 by Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino, “The Flash,” secret identity Barry Allen, is a hero with the power of super speed that allows him incredible abilities, including time travel. The character was a part of Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” and debuted in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” The character is also featured on The CW’s “The Flash,” played by Grant Gustin.

According to reports, one of the main female villains in the developing sequel "Wonder Woman 2" (aka "Magic Hour") , will be 'Circe', a 'sorceress' that debuted in "Wonder Woman" #37 (1949), created by writer Robert Kanigher and illustrator Harry G. Peter:
In the original DC Comics continuity, Circe is a centuries-old enchantress kept young by the elixir 'vitae'.
Gaining magical powers on the island 'Aeaea', she becomes skilled at turning men into animals resembling their personalities (ie. pigs) ...
...and for these crimes against humanity 'Hippolyta' banishes her to 'Sorca', an island planet in space "...where she can do no harm."
When she manages to return to Earth, Circe tries to destroy Wonder Woman, because an oracle said "...the daughter of Hippolyta will be her undoing."
Despite various comic book interpretations over the years, Circe's key features include immortality, physical beauty, a command over sorcery and a delight in humiliating her foes.

After a job well done on last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are currently in negotiation talks with Warner Bros to direct the forthcoming Flash stand-alone movie, Flashpoint.
Warner Bros haven’t been in too much of a rush in finding the right fit to take the helm of The film – which seess Ezra Miller reprising his role – as Miller has been preparing for another one of their blockbuster favourites, the sequel to Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald.
The studio had originally eyed Ben Affleck to direct but after he turned down the job. Rick Famuyiwa was then hired to direct but he then walked away from the project so the hunt was back on. and they decided to also go with a new direction with the script which has been drafted by Joby Harold. These are the best episodes of the Justice League animated series and Justice League Unlimited!
It's tough to pick favorites when discussing the Justice League animated series and its follow up, Justice League Unlimited. It's also tough to really make a distinction between the two, despite the different titles and increased roster. A few tweaks aside, they're the same show, and the level of quality is consistent throughout.
The most important thing to remember about Justice League and Justice League Unlimited is that this is probably the single best introduction to the wider DC Universe that you can hope for. Just as Batman: The Animated Series perfectly distilled all of the essential elements of the Batman mythology into one perfect package, that's what these shows do with the spirit of the Dcu.

"She has this 'meta power', but she also has the 'bo staff', so we just felt it was right for her to have something that was definitely more than a nod to the 'Dcu' character...

So you had a story idea and you’ve worked it up into a plot. The characters are defined, you know who is doing what, the twists and turns and even the theme.
Now you have to put words into everyone’s mouths or, more precisely, into their word balloons. For some would-be writers, that’s where the wheels come off. How do you write dialogue? More importantly, how do you write good dialogue?
Let’s start with a basic: all dialogue is action. No one just speaks: they cajole, they explain, they confirm, they deny, they confront, they exalt, they exult, they attack, they defend, they lie and so on. It is an active transitive verb. When a character speaks, they are doing something or attempting to do something. What’s important is not what the character is saying but what the character is doing or trying to do when they speak.

I’ve been watching DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow over on the CW. Among the characters that have been appearing on the show are Firestorm and Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Well, not so much Hawkman any more, maybe. I didn’t create those three characters but I certainly played with them a lot and, for a while, left my sticky fingerprints all over them. So it’s interesting watching manifestations of them in other media.
I’ll be experiencing that big time come August when the Suicide Squad movie hits the multiplexes. I created Amanda Waller and I defined characters like Deadshot and Captain Boomerang and it will be exciting to see how they translate for the screen. I hope.
None of the character portrayals will translate directly from the comics to movies or TV. I’m okay with that; none of them have so far. Different media have different needs.

The 1950s were a time of great experimentation for comic book publishers. Retail outlets were disappearing and post-war military scale-backs undermined Px sales. Superman was kept alive by its massive television exposure, but virtually all other superhero comics were either gone or in deep trouble.
Necessity being the mother of invention, comics publishers back then had no choice but to try new ideas and concepts. Western comics were hit-or-miss; those that featured top-line movie stars or characters were doing okay, the others were sort of meh. Romance comics, teevee tie-ins and some funny animal books were selling. The horror and crime comics that had been keeping publishers such as EC, Harvey and Gleason in the money were being condemned by the media, camera-hungry politicians and sanctimonious self-appointed “experts.”
So until DC and Marvel finally succeeded in rejuvenating the superhero genre, experimentation was the watchword of that decade. And that brings...

Sorta Spoiler Notes: Today I’m discussing the latest Suicide Squad reprint, Rogues, and I’ll disclose some plot points. The stories were originally published in the late 80s so a spoiler shouldn’t be needed, but just in case you didn’t read them back then and are considering catching up now, you been warned!
One of the nice side-effects of the upcoming Suicide Squad movie is that DC is pushing into Tpb print my original run. The latest volume comes out April 12 and is entitled Rogues and it’s maybe my favorite one so far. It reprints issues 17 through 25, including the Annual and a Bronze Tiger solo story by Larry Ganem and Peter Krause.
A quick rundown on the Squad. The Original Suicide Squad was created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru and debuted in 1959 in The Brave and the Bold #25. They were pretty much a version of...

Development continues on Warner Bros. big screen feature based on DC Comics' "Metal Men", starring 'Gold', 'Iron', 'Lead', 'Mercury', 'Tin' and 'Platinum':
"Metal Men" will be live-action, with director/cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld ("Men In Black") attached.
"Metal Men" debuted in DC Comics' "Showcase" #37, created by writer Robert Kanigher and illustrator Ross Andru, introduced as advanced artificially intelligent robots, created by scientist 'Dr. William "Will" Magnus'.
The six robots were field leader 'Gold', strong man 'Iron', slow-witted and loyal 'Lead', hot-headed 'Mercury', self-doubting and insecure 'Tin' and 'Platinum', aka 'Tina' who believed she was a real woman and in love with her creator.
Each 'Metal Man' also possessed abilities that reflected the traits of their namesake metal: Gold could stretch his form almost infinitely, Iron was super strong, Lead could block harmful radiation by morphing into thick shields, Mercury could melt and pass through small spaces before reforming and Platinum could stretch,...
