“If they really knew who you are, they’d be ashamed” says Rachel Robinson (Nicole Beharie) to her husband Jackie (Chadwick Boseman) – the first African American, Major League Baseball player, subject to racist abuse from the ignorant and uneducated punters. It’s this very notion that exists throughout this Brian Helgeland drama, as 42 is a touching, heartfelt and inspiring movie of a man unfairly judged on the colour of his skin, combating the vitriolic abuse by playing baseball – and being damn good at it.
Set in the 1940s, forward-thinking executive Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) decides he wants to sign a black player for his team the Brooklyn Dodgers, to reach out to a wider crowd and inspire the black population to get more involved in the sport. When he stumbles on the immensely talented Jackie Robinson, in the face of adversity he recruits him in an instance, going against the...

• It's 66 years since Jackie Robinson broke baseball's colour line – and Hollywood has done a fine job retelling his story
• Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers – in pictures
Baseball fans will never be allowed to forget what happened on 15 April 1947, the day Jackie Robinson suited up for the Brooklyn Dodgers to break the sport's long-running color barrier. Major League Baseball has seen to that, leading the charge in ensuring that a seminal moment in American history isn't lost to time passed, retiring his number league wide in 1997 and committing to marking Jackie Robinson Day annually. On Monday, each player will don his celebrated digits, 42, in tribute to a player who became an icon.
There is however a danger that the vast weight of Robinson's story could be lost on those who didn't grow up in a time, or closer to a time, of segregation and unabashed racism. It's one thing to hear stories of Jackie's hardship,...

Will the just-released 42 have the most successful opening weekend for a baseball movie? Writer-director Brian Helgeland's 42, which features Chadwick Boseman as baseball player Jackie Robinson and veteran Harrison Ford, whose credits range from The Conversation and Star Wars in the 1970s to the more recent Cowboys & Aliens, debuted with an estimated $9.1 million at 3,003 locations this past Friday, April 12, as per studio figures found on the web site Box Office Mojo. (Almost) undeboutedly, 42 will end up grossing between $25 million and $26 million by Sunday evening. If that does indeed happen, the film will boast the best debut weekend ever for a movie about baseball -- well, sort of. Pictured above: Ford, looking remarkably different under heavy makeup, plays Brooklyn Dodgers' team executive Branch Rickey in Helgeland's movie. Well, if you dwell on a planet where inflation is as real as the plots of Hollywood films -- including those based on real-life events,...

The new film, 42, is so much more than just a baseball movie. Sure, it may be a biopic about Jackie Robinson, but at its heart is the love story between the history-making player and his wife. "I think what I thought about it then, and I still do, is the challenges didn't drive us apart, Jack and I, it made us feel like it's the two of us against the world," Rachel Robinson recalls in this exclusive behind-the-scenes clip. "I hate to say, but it was supportive of our marriage as opposed to destructive." And the actors who play the couple in the film, Chadwick Boseman and Nicole Beharie, certainly got a clear understanding of that relationship while making the...

We’ve all heard friends, film critics, and advertisements in one way or another, tell us, “You need to see this movie!” But how often does that kind of endorsement come from the White House? Well, it did today, when First Lady Michelle Obama talked about the film 42, which follows the story of Jackie Robinson becoming the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball, before a crowd of 80 students gathered in the State Dining Room at the White House for a film workshop.

First Lady Michelle Obama Tuesday welcomed the cast and crew of upcoming Jackie Robinson biopic "42," starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford, along with 80 high school and college students from across the country, to take part in an interactive workshop in Washington DC. Rachel Robinson, Jackie's widow, and Ford, Boseman and director Brian Helgeland led a discussion with the students on the themes and issues of race in the film. Boseman ("Fringe," "Justified") stars as Robinson while Ford plays the legendary baseball player's mentor and Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey; the film chronicles how the duo broke the sport's pernicious color barrier. A recent "Time" feature calls it "often superficial but always well-acted." Most disturbing about the "Time" story is its revelation that since an all-time high of 27% representation in the major leagues in 1975, African-American players dipped to 8% last year. Like the American population, Latino players have surged and...

Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. “42″ tells the story of two men—the great Jackie Robinson and trailblazing Brooklyn Dodgers Gm Branch Rickey—whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball. It.s been far too long since Hollywood has given audiences a nostalgic, Americana baseball movie. As much as I loved Bennett Miller.s Moneyball, he.d be the first to tell you that baseball was the third- or fourth-most dominant theme in the Oscar-nominated drama. So I.m looking to 42, writer-director Brian Helgeland.s biopic on the late, great Jackie Robinson, to reinstate that love of the game that cinema often feeds . and this new featurette from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures is helping to fuel that fire. The tease gives us our first real look at footage from 42, and it's tinged with that amber hue associated with baseball.s vintage era. You can.t see a recreation of Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and not get excited. But the clip also gives us stirring insight from the likes of Rachel Robinson . Jackie.s spouse . on why...

Warner Bros. has released a great new featurette for the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, which was directed by Brian Helgeland (Mystic River writer). After making an indelible impression in Steve McQueen‘s Shame a couple of months ago, Deadline reports that Nicole Beharie has landed her first post-Fassbender‘d role, and it could be a big one. What do I speak of? I speak of 42, the Brian Helgeland-directed biopic of Jackie Robinson that stars newcomer Chadwick Boseman as the baseball legend; Harrison Ford as the Mlb executive who brought him into the game, Branch Rickey; and Christopher Meloni as Brooklyn Dodgers manager Leo Durocher.
The project marks an Express reunion for Beharie and Boseman, since she’ll take on the part of Rachel Isum (now known as Rachel Robinson), to whom the baseball legend was married for 27 years, before his death in 1973. The scope of the character’s involvement hasn’t been specified in Deadline’s article; here’s hoping they don’t take the typical “supportive wife of a mistreated celebrity” route.

Harrison Ford and relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman are set to star in Legendary Pictures’ Jackie Robinson biopic. Brian Helgeland wrote the script and will direct the movie, titled 42.
Ford will play Branch Rickey, President and manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 when he broke the “color barrier” by signing Robinson as the first African-American in Major League baseball. Deadline reported his offer this week and Legendary sent a press release blitz Friday confirming his casting. Robert Redford had long been attached to the role.
30-year-old Boseman, whose resume consists of mostly bit television parts until now, will play the second baseman. Robinson won the inaugural Rookie of the Year award that year, the National League Mvp two years later, a world series title in 1955 and, in 1962, he was inducted in the Hall of Fame. Mlb retired his number, 42, across all teams in 1997.

42 is a movie that will tell the story of Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey, the Dodger Executive who was the first to sign an African American player on a Major League Baseball team. Breaking the color barrier was a risky movie back then, but it was more a message than it was a risk. For obvious reasons the message was clear. Now a press release from Legendary Pictures confirms two major players joining the cast of 42. Harrison Ford, who was in talks to play as Rickey, has official joined the cast. Variety reports that Brian Helgeland and Warner Bros. have taken an unusual turn for their Jackie Robinson-centered 42, casting Chadwick Boseman as the iconic baseball star. (No, me neither.) The actor has spent the majority of his career in random episodes of random TV shows, with the occasional film role, such as The Express, being thrown his way. I don’t think you need me to tell you that this is a huge deal for him.
Not only because he’s playing one of baseball’s most iconic figures, either; Variety also confirms Harrison Ford‘s role as Branch Rickey, the man who signed Robinson into the Mlb in 1947 and forever changed the game. When he was rumored just yesterday, many (including myself) didn’t see it happening — if only because the once-iconic actor had relegated himself to easy genre fare or features drowned in sentimentality.

Burbank, CA – December 9, 2011 – Legendary Pictures announced today that it has cast Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford to star in the company’s film based upon history’s most celebrated baseball figure, Jackie Robinson. Boseman will depict the iconic baseball star, paying tribute to the legacy and impact Robinson made when he became the first African American Major League Baseball player. Ford will star as Branch Rickey, the innovative Major League Baseball executive who is best known for breaking Mlb’s color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson to a minor league contract in 1945. Two years later, at the start of the 1947 major league baseball season, Robinson was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers major league baseball team with the help of Rickey. Rickey was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967. Legendary worked early on in development with Robinson’s widow, Rachel Robinson, to ensure the movie adaptation of the famed player’s story is authentic.

Briefly: We've just heard that Harrison Ford is the latest actor [1] that the producers of Jackie Robinson film 42 have eyed to play Branch Rickey, the La Dodgers exec who helped break the color barrier in baseball by signing Jackie Robinson. While we don't know if Ford will end up playing the role (somehow I expect not) we do know who'll play Jackie Robinson. Chadwick Boseman, whose credits are primarily in small TV roles going back to 2003, will play Robinson, according to Variety [2]. Update: Looks like I was wrong in the opening paragraph, as Jeff Sneider at Variety just said via Twitter [3], "Breaking: Harrison Ford set to play Branch Rickey in Legendary Pictures' Jackie Robinson biopic 42! Link coming..." The full press release from Legendary Pictures is below. According to Deadline Legendary Pictures is wanting to cast Harrison Ford in their upcoming Jackie Robinson movie called 42. If everything goes as planned he will take on the role of Branch Rickey, "the Brooklyn Dodgers executive who was in his mid-sixties when, in 1945, he signed Robinson to a contract with the Dodgers’ minor league affiliate, the Montreal Royals. After Robinson led the league in both batting and fielding percentages that season, it was Rickey who — six days before the start of the 1947 season — called Robinson up to the Dodgers."

A biopic about Hall-of-Fame baseball star Jackie Robinson was first announced in June, and may be courting its first actor.
Vulture reports Jack Nicholson has been offered an unspecified role in the movie, titled 42 after Robinson's jersey number. The report speculates that Nicholson could be asked to play Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers executive who signed Robinson to a minor-league contract in 1945. Rickey would sign Robinson to a Major League contract two years later, making Robinson the first African-American player to join the league.
Brian Helgeland, who wrote the screenplays for last year's Robin Hood and L.A. Confidential, and wrote and directed 2001's A Knight's Tale, is attached to write and direct the biopic, with Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson collaborating to maintain biographical authenticity.

The report speculates that Nicholson could be asked to play Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers executive who signed Robinson to a minor-league contract in 1945. Vulture is reporting that Jack Nicholson has been offered a role in Legendary Pictures' Jackie Robinson biopic, 42. Brian Helgeland wrote and is attached to direct. At this time it's not known what role Nicholson was offered. Souces close to the project suggest it may be the part of Branch Rickey, "the Brooklyn Dodgers executive who was in his mid-sixties when, in 1945, he signed Robinson to a contract with the Dodgers’ minor league affiliate, the Montreal Royals. After Robinson led the league in both batting and fielding percentages that season, it was Rickey who — six days before the start of the 1947 season — called Robinson up to the Dodgers."
Here are some previously reported details about the project:
The movie will pay tribute to the legacy and impact Robinson made when he became the first African American Major League Baseball player.

Already a baseball legend forever present in America's memory, Jackie Robinson, the barrier-breaking first black man to play Major League Baseball, will be immortalized on the silver screen.
Legendary Pictures officially announced the long-gestating Robinson bio film, with the company's CEO Thomas Tull producing and "La Confidential" writer Brian Helgeland behind the camera.
"My family and I are thrilled to have this important film on Jack produced by Legendary Pictures," Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson, said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). "We are proud of his lasting impact on our society, and we know that the legacy he left is inspiring and worth preserving."
While the role of the baseball legend has yet to be cast -- and won't be nearly as accurate as the 1950 film, "The Jackie Robinson Story," in which Robinson himself starred -- Robert Redford is already attached to star as Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers executive who signed Robinson.

The news broke back in April that Robert Redford would be playing former baseball player and executive Branch Rickey in an upcoming movie from L.A. Confidential co-writer Brian Helgeland. While that project is very much still alive, a press release from Legendary Pictures indicates that the focus has shifted to Rickey‘s friend, Jackie Robinson.
Robinson is, as most people know, the first black athlete to ever legally play in the Mlb. Even though he’s considered a great player, his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers is best known for the many benchmarks it set in the civil rights movement, both on and off the baseball field. Those huge accomplishments are reason enough to make the movie about him. While it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Rickey, that’s not the story that people necessarily want to hear. The original movie was said to...

Legendary Pictures will produce an upcoming biopic of hall-of-fame baseball star Jackie Robinson, Variety reports. Robinson broke new ground when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, becoming the first African-American professional baseball player to join the Major Leagues since 1889, when baseball became segregated. Over the course of his career, Robinson won Rookie of the Year, was selected to six All Star teams, and played in six World Series.
Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson, is collaborating with the studio to maintain biographical authenticity. Helming the project as writer-director will be Brian Helgeland, whose previous writing credits include L.A. Confidential, Mystic River, and A Knight's Tale.

Several intriguing projects are getting off the ground and expanding their casts, from Legendary's Jackie Robinson biopic to Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master and Disney's The Girlfriend Equation. Updates on these projects and more are below: - Baseball legend Jackie Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson, is collaborating with backer/producer Legendary to maintain authenticity and accuracy. Brian Helgeland (La Confidential, Mystic River) will write and direct a project that has eluded many in the past, including Spike Lee. “I believe that with the support of Rachel Robinson," states Helgeland, "we have a unique opportunity to bring one of the most famed stories in American culture and baseball to the screen.” - Clint Eastwood's J. Earlier we reported that Robert Redford was set to star in writer-director Brian Helgeland's Jackie Robinson biopic. Redford was set to play Brooklyn Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey in the film that would focus on Rickey and Robinson's relationship. It looks as though the focus has now shifted from focusing on Rickey to more on Robinson. This is fine with me, I am interested in seeing this story come to the big screen either way.
I am really hopeful for this film. The good news is that Helgeland will be working with the Robinson family to give the project the authenticity it deserves. I loved La Confidential and am excited to see how this film shapes up.
