Robin Williams will always be remembered as one of the most prolific actors that Hollywood has ever seen. He was a one-of-a-kind performer, who stood apart with his performances, establishing himself as a comedy legend. Throughout his career, the actor has done a plethora of iconic films such as Aladdin, Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society, and many more.
Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society
The world remembered Williams as an outstanding performer, doing stand-up comedy, films, and TV shows. However, the Popeye actor would consider himself a gamer at heart as he was addicted to gaming, and he was a huge Cod and Counter-Strike fan. The actor would spend hours in front of the screen, as he not only found gaming to be relaxing but also quite deflating as he got humbled by an 11-year-old.

Martin Scorsese's non-profit Film Foundation was first founded in 1990 as a means to restore and archive films that stood on the brink of being lost. Scorsese, one of the world's preeminent cineastes, was aghast to learn that only about 10% of the films made before 1929 still survive and that more than half of the films made before 1950 were lost forever. The Film Foundation is run by a consortium of famous filmmakers who raise money for extensive restoration efforts. To date, the Foundation has restored over 1,000 movies. Many of the films can be watched online on the Fest Foundation's website. The Foundation also provides educational materials for teachers who might want to show some of these movies to their students. Scorsese wants to make sure that audiences have a chance to see some of the greatest films of all time.

Audiences have long pit contemporaries Tom Holland and Timothée Chalamet in a competition, where comparisons on who’s the bigger box-office draw and the better actor have always made rounds across the internet.
Although unintended on their part, it’s not a recent phenomenon for Hollywood superstars. The so-called star-power race and its unbridled force usually warrant these differentiations.

Chalamet has become one of the most renowned box office magnets in recent years with his diversified roles and back-to-back hits. The 28-year-old actor even broke a record previously held by John Travolta for four decades! He’s being touted as the new-age box office king, which shouldn’t be surprising.

According to reports, Chernin Entertainment and King Features are developing a new ‘patriotic’, live-action “Popeye the Sailor” feature, to be scripted by Michael Caleo (“The Sopranos”):
"...created by cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar, ‘Popeye’ debuted in the 1929 comic strip “Thimble Theater”.
“The comic was then turned into a series of theatrical cartoon shorts by Fleischer Studios for Paramount Pictures…

The spinach-guzzling, Brutus-bashing sailor Popeye is set to return in a live action feature-length film, according to reports.
For those of us of a certain generation, Popeye is an unforgettable figure. He was a mainstay of Saturday morning cartoons, taught us that pipe smoking and violence were acceptable choices (ahem) and perhaps most impactful of all, he ruined spinach for the rest of our lives.
Anybody growing up with Popeye on their screens must get mildly disappointed every time they munch on some spinach and their muscles don’t immediately pop out to incredible proportions.
As well as featuring in regular cartoon appearances, the character also got the movie treatment all the way back in 1980. The pipe-chewing sailor was bought into live action by none other than director Robert Altman and played by the wonderful Robin Williams. Shelley Duvall would co-star in the film as well, forming quite the creative team and yet,...

It’s time to break out the corn cob pipe, the can of spinach and maybe consider whether we’re scrapping the barrel of I.P. and brands, people. Variety reports that Chernin Entertainment (the folks behind the modern “Planet of The Apes” franchise) and King Features are partnering to develop a brand new live-action feature take on the classic cartoon character “Popeye The Sailor Man.” An iconic and beloved cartoon character that first debuted in comic strips in the late 1920s and some animated shorts in the 1930s, Popeye would eventually be best remembered for his catchy theme song and the cans of spinach he eats in moments of distress to receive a sudden burst of super-human levels of energy, strength, and speed and defeat his foes.

The live-action movies based on comic book storylines or animated characters are either hugely successful or a massive disappointment as we have witnessed in the recent adaptations. It seems like we’re all set to witness another adaptation of a very popular cartoon character, as it was recently announced that Michael Caleo is allegedly working on a live-action adaptation of Popeye the Sailor Man.

Popeye is one of the most popular cartoon characters the world has ever seen and many generations grew up watching the animated series based on the popular sailor man who gained superhuman strength by eating Spinach. The character even celebrated its 95th anniversary earlier this year as it was first released in the 1929 comic Thimble Theater.

The 1980 Robert Altman film Popeye, which gave Robin Williams his first starring role, is kind of a divisive film. It made an admirably grand attempt at adapting the cartoon into a live-action hyper-reality. Not unlike Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy. However, many find the Popeye film hard to swallow and the film was panned by critics. The 1920s cartoon tough guy who likes his spinach would remain somewhat relevant as a mascot here and there. In the 90s, the now-defunct regional theater chain, Dickinson Theaters, had featured the Sailor Man, his girlfriend Olive Oyl and even Bluto in some ads and some promotional merchandise. However, for the most part, Popeye is mostly known to the masses through reputation.
The character would celebrate his 95th anniversary this year and Variety now reports that there will now be a new live-action adaptation of the Popeye character set for release. According to Variety,...

Legendary comic book and cartoon character Popeye the Sailor is once again coming to the big screen, as Chernin Entertainment and King Features officially confirm that a big-budged live-action adaptation is in the works. This will be the first time that the character has been revisited in a live-action format since the late Robin Williams played Popeye in the 1980 movie. This has been confirmed exclusively by Variety, as the magazine reported on the movie being in the works.
As stated, Chernin Entertainment and King Features are working on the movie and will probably be in charge of its production and distribution, securing a worldwide theatrical distribution. So far, there aren’t many details available, but the movie is supposedly going to be a big-budget feature with Michael Caleo attached as the screenwriter as of the time of writing. You can’t blame Lou (Kristen Stewart) for gawking at Jackie (Katy O’Brian) the first time she lays eyes on her. No one in Lou’s tiny Southwestern town — the only one she’s ever known — looks at all like Jackie, a budding bodybuilder who seems to have blown into town on a stiff breeze. Lou has plenty of time to look at Jackie, too, considering she spends most of her life working a demeaning job at a local gym and doesn’t seem to care about much of anything. But Jackie? Oh, Lou cares, and quickly.
Lou’s gym seems to draw in the obsessive type — even the middle-aged moms are pushing themselves too hard on the exercise bikes — and a series of signs placed around the joint hammer home that mood. Lou, though, doesn’t seem obsessed with anything. That is, until Jackie sweeps into town.

The British production company Aardman, best known for award-winning shorts such as the evergreen Creature Comforts and short-to-feature franchises like Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, specializes in “Claymation,” stop-motion animation done using figurines made of clay and similar material. Even by the glacial standards of animation practice, they take ages to produce new work. You might say their output is rare as hens’ teeth, to quote a Britishism, which is apt because their most successful feature (and the highest-grossing stop-motion film ever) is still Chicken Run (2000), a family-friendly film set on a 1950s chicken farm that stars a brood of fowl with anatomically incorrect, but very Aardman-esque, over-bitey teeth.
But good things come to those who wait, and the studio’s sequel, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, is a worthy successor. Rounding up the feathered friends who made a break for freedom in the last film, led...

Shelley Duvall was a Texas college student when she basically just fell into an acting career. She happened to meet director Robert Altman at a party while he was in Texas shooting his movie Brewster McCloud. Intrigued by her “upbeat presence and unique physical appearance”, the director and crew members talked Duvall into taking a role in the film. Suddenly she was an actress who started racking up credits: Nashville, Annie Hall, The Shining, Popeye, Time Bandits, Roxanne, The Portrait of a Lady, and fifty more, including hosting her own TV show, Faerie Tale Theatre. She retired from acting over twenty years ago (although she recently filmed a role in the horror movie The Forest Hills)… and in recent years, she has been in the news for her struggles with mental illness. The second of nine films made by director Jess Franco and writer-producer Harry Alan Towers over the course of only two years, The Girl from Rio is their jazzy, featherweight riff on the spy-fi genre, a heady blend of international intrigue and semi-science-fictional elements, popular (especially in Europe) in the wake of the James Bond films. It’s also a sequel of sorts to Towers’s earlier film The Million Eyes of Sumuru, directed by Lindsay Shonteff, based on the exploits of the Sax Rohmer super-villainess. Though in this film, for some inexplicable reason, the character is regularly referred to as Sunanda (obviously and not very convincingly dubbed in post) and listed in the credits as Sumitra. Blame it on Rio!

Popeye the Sailor: The 1960s TV Cartoons

Thankfully, Grandinetti provides us with a handy guide, breaking down which animation house did what, all in an attempt to corner the syndicated cartoon market when there were hours upon hours of time to fill.

A singularly wacky moment in film history is poked in “Enter the Clones of Bruce.” It surveys the years immediately following Bruce Lee’s untimely 1973 death, when the sudden international thirst for martial arts movies that he’d awoken could seemingly only be slaked by the man himself — or by a host of imitators who popped up under lookalike pseudonyms.
David Gregory’s documentary won’t convince most viewers that the resulting flood of opportunistic cheapies are worth more extensive investigation. But they’re certainly cheesy fun in excerpt, and interviews with surviving participants provide an entertaining window into an anything-goes heyday for Hong Kong cinema. Premiering in Tribeca’s midnight section, this high-kicking flashback should appeal to the same fans who previously enjoyed such prior psychotronic excavations as “Not Quite Hollywood,” “Electric Boogaloo” or this director’s own prior investigations of cult figures Al Adamson and Richard Stanley.

Now that Renfield is available on Blu-ray and DVD, I think a lot of people will be kicking themselves for not sinking their teeth into the horror-comedy on the big screen. The home video release boasts an hour of making-of featurettes and deleted/extended scenes, plus an audio commentary with eight crew members.
The track features producer Samantha Nisenboim, screenwriter Ryan Ridley, makeup effects supervisor Christien Tinsley, visual effects supervisor James E. Price, assistant editor Noah Cody, supervising sound editor/sound designer John Marquis, supervising sound editor Nancy Nugent, and supervising digital colorist David Cole.
Here are eight things I learned from the Renfield commentary…
1. Using footage from the original Dracula was Adam McKay’s idea.
Renfield opens with Nicolas Cage’s Dracula and Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield inserted into footage from Tod Browning’s 1931 classic adaptation of Dracula, a concept that came from McKay after boarding the project.

'Operation Overlord' was the codename for the 'Battle of Normandy', the 'Allied' operation that launched June 6, 1944, ('D-Day') , for the successful invasion of German-occupied Western Europe during 'World War II':
The amphibious landings were preceded by extensive aerial and naval bombardment and an airborne assault—the landing of 24,000 American, British, and Canadian airborne troops shortly after midnight.
Allied infantry and armored divisions began landing on the coast of France at 06:30. The target 50-mile (80 km) stretch of the Normandy coast was divided into five sectors: 'Utah', 'Omaha', 'Gold', 'Juno' and 'Sword. Strong winds blew landing craft east of their intended positions.
The men landed under heavy fire from gun emplacements overlooking the beaches, and the shore was mined and covered with obstacles such as wooden stakes, metal tripods, and barbed wire, making the work of the beach-clearing teams difficult and dangerous.

Street Fighter 6 is officially here and it’s very good. Fans agree with the game seeing record-breaking player numbers on day one.
In a time when most non-Smash Bros. fighting games have waned in popularity behind larger live service and battle royale games, the latest entry in the storied franchise is looking to take back the belt and reinvigorate the genre, paving the way for other major players on the horizon like Mortal Kombat 1 and Tekken 8.

Donnie Yen is the premier martial arts showman on Earth. He is the heir to Jackie Chan, who was Bruce Lee's successor, and, like those legends, his fighting style is a fluid amalgam of hand-to-hand combat techniques. Watching Yen ply his craft is like listening to a vintage De La Soul track. His fight scenes are an exhilarating, expertly choreographed blur of disciplines. Yen samples from Tai Chi, karate, Taekwondo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, aikido, wrestling, judo and so much more. And when you spot a reference to a patented punch, kick, or feint from another film or a notable fighter, you get every bit as giddy as the first time you heard the Beastie Boys blend John Williams' "Jaws" theme with Bernard Herrmann's legendary "Psycho" cue in the song, "Egg Man," on their "Paul's Boutique" album.
At the age of 59, Yen shows no signs of slowing down, nor has...

Take a look at new footage from the Netflix Animation, King Features production of "Cuphead", the 1930's cartoon-inspired animated TV series created by Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, as the first, long-form animated series for King Features, the home of "Popeye" and "Dick Tracy", as the company builds up franchises across TV, digital video, licensing and social media:
"...on 'Inkwell Isles', 'Cuphead' and his brother 'Mugman' are two fun-loving cups who live under the watchful eye of 'Elder Kettle'. Against the elder's warnings, the brothers enter the 'Devil's Casino' and begin playing craps.
"When they go on a winning streak, the Devil himself offers to raise the stakes. If Cuphead and Mugman can win one more roll, they will receive all the money in the casino; if not, the Devil will take their souls.
"Cuphead loses by rolling snake eyes, and he and Mugman beg for mercy. The Devil makes a...

Check out this unboxing of the Popeye & Friends “Destro” Popeye watch from the folks at Undone.
The Sailor Man watch with snowflake markers in this natural bronze case has a special ability to quickly develop a patina on the outer layer, making each look unique and aged. One may not readily realize that Popeye always uses his left hand to hold his spinach can. This limited edition has a left hand crown setup, which is a rare feature in a watch. It not only caters to “lefties” who wear their watches on the right hand, but also for those who wear watches on their left hand yet prefer the crown not to intrude onto the wrist.
The “Destro” Popeye watch boasts a Japanese Tmi NH35A Automatic Winding Mechanism (supplied by Seiko Manufacturing (H.K.) Limited) housed in a CuSn8 Bronze case with a Lexan Polycarbonate lens. The case measures 40mm (excl.

When I was a kid growing up in Brattleboro, Vt, I had to wait months for a big Hollywood movie to come to town.
One of the big year-end holiday movies of 1980 was Paramount’s Robin Williams pic Popeye, but it didn’t come to my town’s Art-Deco historical landmark theater, the Latchis until Easter weekend.
This weekend, the Latchis Theater in Brattleboro, which caters to a population of 12K, had Warner Bros.’ Christopher Nolan’s Tenet first, before Hollywood, the movie capital of the world. Such was the nature of big Hollywood films of the 1970s and early 1980s: They’d open NYC, LA and big city markets, and gradually make their way to the sticks. Now, we’re living in an era where that entire distribution process is being completely rewritten by the pandemic.
With Los Angeles’ cinemas still closed due to the pandemic with no immediate...
