The Cannes Film Festival is nearing its conclusion, with plenty of films making a splash on the starry Croisette on the French Riviera. However, one studio executive tells Variety, “There aren’t many Oscar-buzzy titles to be excited about, not even in the international feature space.”
This year’s main competition jury, led by president Greta Gerwig and including J.A. Bayona, Ebru Ceylan, Pierfrancesco Favino, Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nadine Labaki and Omar Sy, will name its winners on Saturday.
It was looking like a foregone conclusion that the Palme d’Or win would be bestowed upon Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón, which was picked up by Netflix. However, on Friday, Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” garnered the most enthusiastic reactions on social media from attendees and the longest-standing ovation at 12 minutes. Joe Alwyn admits there is little "rhyme or reason" behind his film choices. The 33-year-old actor has a part in Yorgos Lanthimos' absurdist new movie 'Kinds of Kindness' and explained that he pursues projects that allow him to work with "interesting people" rather than big franchise roles.Speaking to IndieWire at the Cannes Film Festival, Joe said: "I think I've just tried to chase down people so far that I really just admire as directors and a handful of those have happened to be (behind) not always independent films, but not big studio Marvel or anything."I think anything could be brilliant. It's just about the group of people that make it... There's not a ton of rhyme or reason in terms of what I'm going after. I'm just trying to find interesting people to work with."The 'Conversations with Friends' star continued: "And even in a supporting capacity, like 'Kinds of Kindness',...

Joe Alwyn has been the center of much media attention in the last few years. That may be news if you’ve been living in a hermetically sealed bunker. But outside that particular and unsolicited spotlight, the dandyish 33-year-old British actor has carved his name out in films from idiosyncratic auteurs. There was Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir Part II” as a grieving and queer-flirting film editor; Claire Denis’ sensuous 2022 Cannes Grand Prix winner “Stars at Noon” as a Brit adrift in Nicaragua having lots of sex with Margaret Qualley’s character; and most recently “Kinds of Kindness,” whose director Yorgos Lanthimos he previously starred for as a lusty baron in “The Favourite.”
Alwyn is back this year at Cannes in three roles in “Kinds of Kindness,” co-written with Lanthimos by his friend and “Alps” and “The Lobster” collaborator Efthimis Flippou. Which means we are very much in the mode of old-school Lanthimos,...

Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are hungry, wolfing down sandwiches at the start of our “Kinds of Kindness” interview. They’re in Cannes to promote the singular three-part anthology film, which has been well-received. They laugh a lot. She’s a Yorgos Lanthimos veteran, and just won her second Oscar embodying the free-spirited Bella Baxter in “Poor Things.” After that, it seems, nothing will faze her and she’ll do anything for her soulmate director. Announced at Cannes: Their next movie to be shot this summer, “Bugonia” (Focus Features), a remake of a Korean thriller, co-starring Plemons.
The 36-year-old one-time child actor is the new kid in town, joining such familiar faces as Stone, Margaret Qualley, and Willem Dafoe in the Lanthimos ensemble. Jesse Plemons has become an undisputed auteur’s favorite. The 36-year-old star’s beguiling unshowiness onscreen has landed him memorable parts in films from Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master), Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies, The Post), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon), Charlie Kaufman (I’m Thinking of Ending Things), Adam McKay (Vice) and Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), among so many others. Arguably even more viewers know him from his indelible work on the small screen, which began with his breakthrough role on NBC’s Friday Night Lights, continued through AMC’s landmark hit series Breaking Bad and culminated with an Emmy nomination for FX’s Fargo, where he met his wife, actress and co-star Kirsten Dunst.
Plemons touched down for the Cannes Film Festival on Friday for the world premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, the acclaimed Greek director’s follow-up to his multi-Oscar-winning period fantasy Poor Things.

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone are teaming up yet again for a new film titled Bugonia, which has been acquired by Focus Features.
The announcement of Focus’ acquisition arrives as Lanthimos and Stone are at the Cannes Film Festival to debut their latest release, Kinds of Kindness. Bugonia will mark their fifth on-screen collaboration, following The Favourite, the short film Bleat, Poor Things (which won Stone the Academy Award for Best Actress), and Kinds of Kindness.
In addition to Stone, Bugonia will see Lanthimos reunite with another Kinds of Kindness star, Jesse Plemons. Plot-wise, the new movie is based on the 2003 South Korean sci-fi film, Save the Green Planet!, following conspiracy theorists who kidnap a CEO on the belief that she’s an alien attempting to destroy Earth.

Yorgos Lanthimos can’t stop (won’t stop!) working with Oscar winner Emma Stone, casting the actress once again as leading lady for his next project “Bugonia.”
The drama will also star Jesse Plemons who, along with Stone, appears in Lanthimos’ forthcoming “Kinds of Kindness.” That three-chapter feature just premiered on Friday at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
“Bugonia” follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. The script is from heat-seeking “Succession” and “The Menu” writer Will Tracy.
Focus Features has won domestic rights to distribute the project. Universal Pictures will roll out the film in global territories, save Korea where “Parasite” producer Cj Enm will release. The latter is financing the film with Fremantle. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent brokered the rights deal.
This package is loaded with pedigree.

Focus Features has taken worldwide rights to Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest project Bugonia, the remake of South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet, which sees the Greek director reunite yet again with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. The trio are here in Cannes with their Competition title Kinds of Kindness, which had its world premiere Friday.
Focus will release Bugonia in the U.S., with Universal Pictures distributing the title internationally (excluding South Korea). It’s the second deal for Focus Features announced in Cannes this week (Focus picked up Woody Harrelson starrer Last Breath a few days ago), but this one will be a notable coup for the studio given that Lanthimos’ previous Oscar-winning titles The Favourite and Poor Things as well as Cannes contender Kinds of Kindness were all handled by Searchlight for distribution.

Those lucky enough to have discovered Yorgos Lanthimos right as he was establishing himself as a world-cinema weirdo — we’d carbon-date the initial who-the-fuck-is-this-guy?! moment as mid-2009, when his breakthrough film Dogtooth was worming its way through the festival circuit — remember what a shock it was to encounter the Greek filmmaker’s work. It was absurd, abstract, capable of spanning the humor gamut from deadpan to super-dark. Not even the gradual inclusion of name-brand actors like Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and Nicole Kidman could dull the bewilderment (try explaining the...

Two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone further expands her cinematic universe alongside auteur Yorgos Lanthimos with their latest collaboration “Kinds of Kindness.”
Yet while “Poor Things” was an Academy Award-winning feature, the Cannes premiere for “Kinds of Kindness” seemed to puzzle critics and fans alike. The feature, which was originally titled “And”, is Lanthimos’ eighth film and co-stars Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons, Hunter Schafer, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau, and Mamoudou Athie.
Lanthimos previously described the contemporary anthology film as being “three different stories, with four or five actors who play one part in each story, so they all play three different parts,” which, according to the director, was “almost like making three films” in one.
Lanthimos reunited with frequent screenwriter collaborator Efthimis Filippou to pen the script for “Kinds of Kindness.” The duo previously co-wrote Lanthimos’ “Dogtooth,” “The Lobster,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” and “Alps.”

“I probably won’t be doing the yacht parties that I’ve heard about,” jokes Hong Chau of attending her first Cannes Film Festival several months after having her second child. “I’m like, ‘Well, I’m going to be pumping.'”
Chau will be touching down in France for the premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, the director’s follow-up to the Oscar-winning Poor Things that will premiere in competition at the fest. In Kindness, out June 21 via Searchlight, Chau stars alongside Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Jesse Plemons, each playing several roles across the anthology film, which unfolds in three parts.
The official synopsis for the film says it follows a man who seeks to break free from his predetermined path, a cop who questions his wife’s demeanor after her return from a supposed drowning and a woman’s quest to locate a renowned spiritual guide.

Irish production company Element Pictures is firing on all cylinders, as company partners Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe bring three very different pictures to Cannes.
The Yorgos Lanthimos producers are still smiling after a nail-biter Oscar night that yielded four wins for “Poor Things,” including Best Actress for Emma Stone. She also stars in all three episodes in Lanthimos’ follow-up, the $15-million black comedy “Kinds of Kindness” along with returning co-stars Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley and Lanthimos newbie Jesse Plemons, who leads the first two episodes. He gets to show what he can do throughout; Stone delivers an emotional performance in the ultimate story.

Is there a harder-working actor in the movie business than Willem Dafoe? The 68-year-old, who splits his time between Los Angeles, New York and Rome, has appeared in more than 150 films, co-starring in everything from superhero features to dozens of movie-buff favorites from David Lynch, Martin Scorsese, Lars von Trier, Paul Schrader, Oliver Stone, Julian Schnabel, Wes Anderson, Sean Baker, Spike Lee, Robert Eggers and so many more.

Tony McNamara likes a challenge but when Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos first presented him with Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel by Poor Things to adapt into a script, even the seasoned Australian writer admits he found the material daunting.

After the conclusion of each Academy Awards ceremony, I always go back and rewatch the telecast from start to finish. I want to pick up on all of the things that I might have missed during my initial viewing. I especially like to study the nominees’ reactions each time an envelope is opened — particularly for the major categories when the famous five-camera shot is strategically displayed on the TV screen. I always rewind the moment that each winner is announced, so that I can carefully study the look on each individual’s face both before and after the big reveal.

I’m going to begin with a confession: I like to think of myself as both a decent son — Hi, Mom! — and an Anglophile, but before tonight, I’d gone 40-something years of my life without realizing that the British had a different Mother’s Day.
Or maybe I’ve known and forgotten? Either way, it was impossible to forget during Sunday (March 10) night’s telecast of the 96th Academy Awards, in which U.K. Mother’s Day got more onstage references than Gaza, Ukraine and Donald Trump combined.

Emma Stone stepped up to the stage after her name was called for winning the Best Actress Oscar on Sunday for her role in Poor Things, saying the back of her dress was broken. “Oh boy,” she joked, “I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken’, the big Ryan Gosling number from Barbie that had unspooled previously.
“My voice is also a little gone,” she said, saluting the presenters and others in the category, which was considered one of most competitive of the night. “Sandra, Annette, Carey, Lily, I share this with you.”

Oppenheimer was the opposite of a bomb at the 2024 Oscars, winning seven Oscars over the course of the ceremony — including best picture, director, actor, supporting actor, original score, cinematography and film editing.
The Universal historical epic scored actors Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. their first Oscars for best actor and supporting actor, respectively, while Christopher Nolan won best director — also his first win following eight nominations.
Said Nolan while accepting his best director Oscar: “Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old. I mean, imagine being there 100 years into painting or theater. We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think that I’m a meaningful part of it means the world to me.”
Murphy immediately thanked longtime collaborator Nolan and his producer-wife Emma Thomas. “It’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken...

Emma Stone is now a two-time Oscar winner.
The “Poor Things” actress took home the top title for her latest collaboration with auteur Yorgos Lanthimos. Stone previously won Best Actress in 2017 for Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” Stone was formerly nominated for Oscars for “Birdman” and Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.”
“Poor Things” marks Stone’s third collaboration with Lanthimos. The duo are set to work together on upcoming films “Kinds of Kindness” and “Save the Green Planet,” a remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2005 sci-fi satire.
Stone plays Bella Baxter in “Poor Things.” Bella is a reanimated (and renamed) woman who, after committing suicide while pregnant, is brought back to life with the brain of her unborn child. Bella explores her turn-of-the-century world and voyages across 1800s Europe. The film is inspired by Scottish author Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel about a woman who drowns herself to escape her abusive husband. The...

It's Jimmy Kimmel's fourth time hosting the Oscars, and not everyone was thrilled about it when he was first announced. He's considered a safe, dependable host -- one who tells plenty of jokes but who never ruffles too many feathers or does anything too unpredictable.
This time around, Kimmel began his opening monologue by acknowledging the event's five minute delay (seemingly the result of protestors delaying the entrance of audience members into the building) and then continued on with a speech that was business as usual. If you liked Kimmel's previous hosting gigs, there's a lot to love here. If you didn't, well, maybe next year there'll be a different host.
If you missed it, here's a quick rundown of how it all went. Some of Kimmel's material felt fresh and funny, some of it was tired or in bad taste, and some of it was just sort of confusing.

Jimmy Kimmel’s fourth go-around as Oscars emcee started a few minutes late Sunday evening. So in response, the late-night host made sure his opening monologue zipped right along.
After a crack about how the ceremony started an hour earlier than usual but would likely still run over its timeslot, Kimmel said, “In fact, we’re already five minutes over, and I am not joking.” (More on that here.)

When deciding whether make Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Searchlight Pictures and parent company Disney believed the movie would be able to earn north of $100 at the global box office. After all, the project was reuniting Lanthimos with Emma Stone, one of Hollywood’s on-fire actresses who had starred in the filmmaker’s Oscar-nominated The Favourite, while he himself had developed a cult following. But when execs saw the completed film, some had their doubts, according to one source close to the project.
Would moviegoers embrace a genre-bending, Victorian-set tale about a Frankenstein-like doctor who puts a baby’s brain inside the dying mother’s body, only to unleash a woman with blissfully innocent mindset that thinks nothing of masturbating in front of others or spitting out a mouthful of food in a swanky restaurant. She embarks on a hedonistic adventure with a debauched lawyer — her word for...

I would have preferred to see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as a nominee over Maestro — it’s an incredible feat of animation and storytelling. American Fiction and The Holdovers were enjoyable, but very old-fashioned — meaning, not edgy — in terms of their stories and their filmmaking. Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” spans five different major locations — London, Paris, a ship, Alexandria and Lisbon — which meant production designers James Price and Shona Heath had a considerable undertaking ahead of them when they signed on.
Creating Lisbon proved to be one of the biggest jobs for cinematographer Robbie Ryan and even Lanthimos. As Emma Stone’s Bella Baxter departs her black-and-white world of Victorian-era London and Godwin’s (Willem Dafoe’s) home, the movie transitions into a pastel-colored world — there’s a soundstage with a water tank for the scenic sea view, and a giant picturesque backdrop.
Used to filming with natural lighting and exterior shots, Lanthimos and Ryan had to adjust to what they call their most challenging task.
Here the two reflect on working together for the first time and how they collaborated on “Poor Things.”

One might say Poor Things is an epic culmination for Ed Guiney: It’s a film ten years in the making that lurked in the shadows of the producer’s three other collaborations with director Yorgos Lanthimos (the duo also has a fifth project on the horizon: Kinds of Kindness).
Based on a novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things is Lanthimos’ biggest movie yet. Vivid screenwriting from Tony McNamara is brought to life by vibrant sets, costumes and music with acclaimed performances from Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef and Willem Dafoe. The film took home the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and garnered 11 Oscar nominations last month, the second most of any film behind Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Actress Emma Stone, who plays the titular character in the acclaimed Yorgos Lanthimos film ‘Poor Things’, revealed that she initially doubted that she would be able to live up to the part. The film, which is based on the novel by Alasdair Gray, talks about a young woman named Bella Baxter in Victorian London, who comes to life through a brain transplant and embarks on a journey of self-discovery.
“I think because I had lived with her in my mind for so long and I was so deeply in love with Bella, it terrified me not to live up to her as a character. I felt like I was failing her in the first week, and failing Yorgos. It was just difficult,” Emma told Variety magazine.

Mark Ruffalo has taken a turn. “I’m so sick of being so well-behaved,” he says. “I just want to take the ship as close to the reef as I can without actually crashing it. And maybe I’ll crash it too. I don’t give a sh*t anymore.”
It’s fair to say that prior to his Poor Things role, Ruffalo’s credits are littered with likeable men: Jen Garner’s lovely best friend Matt in 13 Going on 30; the right-side-of-justice Inspector Toschi in Zodiac; real-life environmental activist Rob Bilott in Dark Waters; the abuse-exposing journalist Mike Rezendes in Spotlight… Even his Marvel franchise Hulk is deeply loveable. Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have a sense of comic timing that rivals Nichols and May.
Case in point: When I ask Lanthimos how he became aware of Stone, the 50-year-old Greek director hesitates for a moment before addressing his 35-year-old muse.
“I was aware of her work,” he says. “I thought of her for ‘The Lobster,’ but didn’t use her.”
“Do you want to say why?” Stone asks.

Yorgos Lanthimos is to direct a remake of the South Korean film 'Save the Green Planet'.The 'Poor Things' filmmaker is set to begin shooting the fantasy comedy movie in the UK and New York this summer with Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe at Element Pictures serving as producers. The project appears to be the ideal movie for Lanthimos because it is a black comedy that tells the story of a disillusioned young man who captures and tortures a businessman who he is convinced is part of an alien invasion.A battle of wits takes place between the captor, his devoted girlfriend, the businessman and a private detective. The original South Korean movie was released in 2003 and directed by Jang Joon-hwan. It became a festival favourite around the world – winning prizes in Bucheon, Buenos Aires and Brussels - and earned Jang the Golden Bell Award for best new director in Korea that year.

The biggest night for British film proved to be a major one for Christopher Nolan. After reigniting the summer box office alongside Barbie, his atomic bomb biopic Oppenheimer led the way at the BAFTAs 2024, earning seven awards on the night – including the most hotly-contested categories. As well as Best Film, a Directing win for Nolan himself, and Acting awards for Cillian Murphy (Leading) and Robert Downey Jr. (Supporting), it bagged the likes of Best Score for Ludwig Goransson, Editing, and Cinematography for Hoyte Van Hoytema.
Nolan called it “an incredible honour” to be recognised on home turf in the UK. Every year, I get a kick out of interviewing the Oscar-nominated screenwriters at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. This year’s panel included two rookie film writer-directors (Cord Jefferson of “American Fiction” and Celine Song of “Past Lives”), two first-time feature screenwriters (Samy Burch of “May December” and David Hemingson of “The Holdovers”), two who studied law (Hemingson and Josh Singer of “Maestro”) and two co-writers with live-in partners (Burch and Arthur Harari of “Anatomy of a Fall”). And oddly, three have westerns in the works as their next projects.
Here’s a few highlights of what I gleaned from these brilliant writers.
1. David Hemingson leaned on his relatives for “The Holdovers.”
The television writer first wrote a pilot about an East Coast boarding school that his agent told him he could use as a writing sample. But the script got to Alexander Payne who liked it and cold-called...

Mark Ruffalo is calling for an Israel-Hamas ceasefire. At the DGA awards in Beverly Hills on Saturday night he told Deadline the pins on his lapel represented “peace lillies and Artists for Ceasefire”.
Ruffalo said that Artists for Ceasefire is “calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. There are 1,200 Israelis dead and 27,000 Palestinians,” he continued.
“We’ve come to understand this bombing isn’t working, we’re not going to bomb our way to peace, and all we’re saying is, what’s wrong with giving a ceasefire a chance? We have a million refugees on the border of Rafah right now, who are looking at another bombing surge, and we have 400,000 people starving to death right now, without any humanitarian aid being able to get in there. So we’re asking the leaders of the world, especially President Biden, to demand a ceasefire, a lasting ceasefire, and give...

Gregoris Rentis’s documentary tells the stories of three private guards waiting for an attack that never comes, but the socio-political reasons for their existence is never fully explored
Divided into three chapters, Gregoris Rentis’s documentary follows Yorgos, Costa and Victor, three private maritime guards at different stages of their seafaring journey. All hailing from Greece, the men are hired as part of counter-piracy security measures for shipping companies, whose boats traverse so-called High Risk Areas. The film, however, is not interested in macho heroism but rather, observed in a state of perpetual waiting, the men come off as passive figures, not agents of control.
Just recruited, Yorgos is adapting to his new unmoored reality, in which daytime drills give way to nightclub outings in the evening. Meanwhile Costa, who is at the peak of his career, seems more at ease with the transient nature of his life. Still...

In Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” 19th-century scientist Baxter (Willem Dafoe) restores Bella (Emma Stone) to life with the brain of her unborn child — and the surreal visual design reflects her wild imagination as she progresses from infant to liberated woman.
To achieve that, the director instructed production designers James Price (“Paddington 2” art director) and Shona Heath (a collaborator of fashion photographer Tim Walker making her film debut) to create a fantastical world that was a throwback to the old-school style of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s “Black Narcissus,” with miniatures, painted backdrops, and rear screen projection (high-tech LED screens created the oceans and skies).
“My experience in film is zero,” Heath said in an on-set interview in the video above, “so this wouldn’t be standing if it wasn’t for James.”

cast and crew of “Poor Things” teased Mark Ruffalo about replacing him with Oscar Isaac — even bringing the other actor to set one day.
Despite having two Oscar nominations and starring in blockbusters such as “Avengers: Endgame,” Ruffalo sometimes grapples with imposter syndrome. The actor admitted this during a recent conversation with his “Poor Things” peers — director Yorgos Lanthimos, writer Tony McNamara and fellow cast members Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Ramy Yousef.
Ruffalo was offered the role of rakish attorney Duncan Wedderburn and recalled how he was sent the script. “I thought it was pretty amazing,” he noted. “But I doubted my ability to do it, to be honest with you. I was scared of it. Even to...
