T-minus two years for the release date of the upcoming Project Hail Mary. Amazon MGM Studios has finally set a date for the Ryan Gosling astronaut thriller. Deadline recently reported that the film, which is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, is preparing for launch on March 20, 2026. There are currently no other big titles scheduled for that weekend. Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor and Andy Weir are all on board as producers of the film. Drew Goddard wrote the adapted screenplay based on the Andy Weir novel. Weir had also written the novel for The Martian, which served as source material for the Matt Damon film of the same name. Goddard is also set to executive produce with his Goddard Textiles partner Sarah Esberg, along with Ken Kao.

Whoa! A new Matrix movie is in the works, with The Cabin in the Woods filmmaker Drew Goddard sorting red and blue pills for another chapter in the legendary action science-fiction franchise Lana and Lilly Wachowski created. Obviously, Warner Bros. is the studio with Lana Wachowski as an executive producer. Goddard is dialing in as the project’s director and writer. However, it remains uncertain if Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and Jada Pinkett Smith will return for the next series installment.
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Warner Bros. is going back to the Matrix.
The studio announced that a fifth “Matrix” movie is in development. It’ll be the first installment without Lana or Lily Wachowski as directors. Instead, “The Martian” screenwriter Drew Goddard will handle filmmaking duties. He will also write the script and produce with his partner at Goddard Textiles, Sarah Esberg. Lana Wachowski, who helmed the most recent “Matrix” installment, 2021’s “Resurrections,” is attached as an executive producer.
It’s not clear who from the “Matrix” universe — Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss have anchored all of the prior movies as Neo and Trinity, while Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris and Priyanka Chopra Jonas joined in the most recent iteration — will return.
Plot details haven’t been revealed, but Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman teases that the story will advance the fantasy world without straying too far...

Comedy Home Economics has been canceled after three seasons, and new drama High Potential has been moved to fall 2024.

The major broadcast networks are trying very hard this year to do what they do best – create franchise drama series built around the adventures of larger-than-life characters.
Kathy Bates, Kaitlin Olson, Carrie Preston and Shanola Hampton are among the female actors hoping to click as distinctive protagonists with new series in the 2023-24 season. Bates will bring to life a next-generation “Matlock,” while Preston limns a new chapter for Elsbeth Tascioni, the attorney character she has played on and off on CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Paramount+’s “The Good Fight” since 2010.
This is good news for the hundreds of international television buyers heading to Los Angeles for next week’s LA Screenings market. Another welcome development is that the largest media congloms are now on a big push to reopen their doors to third-party buyers, after a few years of holding back the biggest shows for in-house streaming services.

ABC has handed Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson, a series order.
The pickup is not surprising; the drama, based on the popular French detective series Hip (High Intellectual Potential) has been the clear frontrunner among ABC’s crop of 2023 pilots.
It is the only pilot ABC is making a decision ahead of its upfront. The remaining five, dramas The Good Lawyer, The Hurt Unit and Judgment, and comedies Keeping it Together (fka Drop-Off) and Public Defenders, remain in contention.
Networks already have been shifting toward year-round development and have not been doing all of their pilot decisions before upfronts. With the writers strike this year, they are even more cautious, taking a wait-and-see approach given the financial commitment and logistical issues associated with a new series order if the work stoppage stretches over several months. The powerful finale of Amazon Studios’ limited series The Underground Railroad created by Oscar winner Barry Jenkins is the latest installment of Deadline’s It Starts On the Page, a series that highlights the scripts serving as the creative backbone of the TV awards season. The scripts have all been submitted for Emmy consideration this year and have been selected using criteria that includes critical acclaim, a range of networks and platforms, and a mix of established and lesser-known shows.
Based on Colson Whitehead’s 2016 Pulitzer- and National Book Award-winning historical novel, the 10-episode series mixes fantastical realism and hard truths as it follows a young slave named Cora Randall (played by Thuso Mbedu) in antebellum Georgia as she attempts to find her freedom via an actual underground railroad system to the north. Today, which marks Jenkins’ birthday, he decided to give us a gift with another soul-stirring look at the series.

“The Oa” will not be back for a third season at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The mystery thriller starred Brit Marling as a blind woman who disappeared seven years ago only to suddenly return with her sight restored. Now referring to herself as The Oa, or Original Angel, she then recruits a small team to help rescue other people who have disappeared by opening a portal to another dimension.

Marling co-created the series along with Zal Batmanglij in addition to starring. Both also executive produced along with Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Sarah Esberg from Plan B Entertainment and Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar.
“We are incredibly proud of the 16 mesmerizing chapters of ‘The Oa,’ and are grateful to Brit and Zal for sharing their audacious vision and for realizing it through their incredible artistry,” said Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix.
