The Grammy nominations were announced on November 10, and the nominees for Album of the Year are historic. Seven out of the eight contenders in the category are female acts, which sets a new record for the most women ever nominated in a single year as lead artists. Check out the list of Grammy nominations here.
The seven distaff nominees are superstar Taylor Swift (“Midnights”), pop prodigy Olivia Rodrigo (“Guts“), alt pop queen Lana Del Rey (“Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd“), past provocateur Miley Cyrus (“Endless Summer Vacation“), R&b darling Janelle Monae (“The Age of Pleasure“), nominations leader Sza (“Sos”) and the alternative supergroup Boygenius (“The Record“). The only male artist nominated is Jon Batiste (“World Music Radio”), who happened to win this award two years ago.

10 biggest Grammy surprises: We goofed by not predicting Victoria Monet, Janelle Monae, Jelly Roll …
The Grammy nominations were announced on Friday morning, November 10, and Gold Derby’s predictions in the big four general field categories were 68.75% accurate, which means we correctly forecast 22 out of 32 nominees across Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. But that also means we were wrong 10 times. Scroll down to see who made the cut in spite of their odds. And check out the list of nominations here.
R&b singer-songwriter Victoria Monet scored twice despite our predictions all but counting her out with 100/1 odds. She’s among the eight contenders for Best New Artist even though we’d ranked her 14th in the race. Just 70 Gold Derby users anticipated her bid there. Even more surprising was her nom for Record of the Year for “On My Mama”; only one user out of more than 2,000 who made predictions saw that one coming.

It’s been five years since Janelle Monae‘s last studio album, “Dirty Computer.” Since then she has been nurturing a successful acting career that has included a critically acclaimed role in the comedy mystery “Glass Onion.” But she’s finally back on the music scene with her collection “The Age of Pleasure.” How does it measure up to her critically hailed past work?
As of this writing the album has a MetaCritic score of 75 based on seven reviews counted thus far, five of which are positive and two of which are classified as mixed, but none of which are negative. Mary Siroky (Consequence) writes that the album “feels more organic and physical than previous efforts … It’s a remarkably cohesive record.” Adam White (The Independent) adds that compared to her past works, this collection “is a lot simpler in approach: this is a sex record, a frothy, horny ode...

Perhaps surprisingly, Monae has yet to actually win a Grammy despite eight nominations spanning the last 15 years. Her debut studio album “The ArchAndroid” earned her a bid for Best Contemporary R&b Album, but she lost that prize to Usher‘s “Raymond v. Raymond.” She then collaborated with Fun on their breakthrough hit “We Are Young,” earning bids for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, but the only award that song...

This year’s Best Supporting Actress Oscar race is one of the most bloated in recent memory, but which five will make the cut? Many critics’ groups have already weighed in with their nominations, including the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. One thing is clear: it’s been an amazing year for female actors in the supporting category. They come from countries as diverse as Ireland (Kerry Condon for “The Banshees of Inerishin” and Jessie Buckley for “Women Talking”), Thailand (Hong Chau for “The Whale”), the United States (Angela Bassett for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and Jamie Lee Curtis for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and the Philippines (Dolly De Leon for “Triangle of Sadness”). The international flavor of the category makes for a more interesting competition as some of these performers have appeared in movies for years while others are new to American audiences.

Add another honor to Janelle Monáe’s 2022 resume. The “Glass Onion” star is set to receive the SeeHer Award at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards in January.
Monae is the second star announced as an honorary award winner from the Critics Choice Association, following Jeff Bridges, who will take home the group’s lifetime achievement award.
The SeeHer Award “honors a woman who advocates for gender equality, portrays characters with authenticity, defies stereotypes and pushes boundaries,” Deadline reported. Previous recipients include Viola Davis, Gal Gadot, Claire Foy, Kristen Bell, Zendaya, and Halle Berry last year.
The 2023 Critics Choice Awards will take place on January 15, 2023 live from Los Angeles with Chelsea Handler set as host. The ceremony will air live on the East Coast on The CW (the show is tape-delayed for West Coast viewers).

Janelle Monáe reflected on her multifaceted career at a Screen Talk hosted by BFI London Film Festival programmer Grace Barber-Plentie. The conversation, which took place ahead of the European premiere of “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” included the musician-actor citing Johnny Depp’s career as one she’d like to emulate given the “transformative” characters he has played. Monáe stressed that it was only Depp’s acting career that she admired, and not Depp as a person.
“When I think about careers, this person’s life as an actor, only… Johnny Depp has a very badass career,” Monae said, citing Willy Wonka and Sweeney Todd as “dramatic roles” she aspires to play in her own work. “Whatever the Janelle Monáe version of them is, maybe it’s something even better, I want to be able to do those transformative characters that people are dressing up as for Halloween.”
