Katherine Waterston is sprawled on the floor of her dressing room. "I hurt my back a few days ago," she explains, slightly embarrassed. "It's not as bad as it looks, trust me." Waterston is backstage at the Good Morning America studios in Manhattan, having just appeared with a handful of her Alien: Covenant costars to stump for the movie on the morning-show circuit; right now, however, she's half-prone, half-sitting on the ground, and well aware that she resembles a vulnerable tangle of limbs stuck in the middle of an advanced yoga position.

“We are what we pretend to be so we must be careful what we pretend to be.” That lucite pearl of wisdom, which appears in the introduction of Kurt Vonnegut’s 1961 novel “Mother Night” and then reverberates beneath the rest of its pages, is as much of a warning as it is an invitation. Many of the great filmmakers have dedicated their lives to sifting through the truth of Vonnegut’s words — or at least that of the principle expressed therein — using that sentiment as a starting point from which to dive into the bottomless void of the human psyche.

One would assume that Joshua Marston’s Complete Unknown might elicit feelings of invigorated freedom – Assume, I repeat. At some point in our lives, we’ve all dreamt about starting over. Hitting the “Eject” button amidst our daily routine, and trying out a different lifestyle that could have been. This is the crux of Marston’s story (co-written by Julian Sheppard), but whatever message is trying to be conveyed (Being happy with one life? Not being afraid to start over somewhere else?) desperately gets lost in translation. Like, Sylvester Stallone trying to communicate with a Japanese businessman. Movies are supposed to make you feel something, but unfortunately, my screening ended with a sense of frustration, confusion and zero sympathetic charms – a deadly trifecta for any indie drama.

Sundance programmers have unveiled what is a jaw-dropping, savoury Premieres line-up. With names such as Asif Kapadia (Ali & Nino), Kelly Reichardt (Certain Women), Joshua Marston (Complete Unknown), Ira Sachs (Little Men), Whit Stillman (Love & Friendship), Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea), Todd Solondz (Wiener-Dog) and James Schamus’ directorial debut (Indignation), the 2016 edition could be considered a “gold” level edition that in the decade plus years we’ve been covering the fest easily rivals what we might find in the Main Comp in Cannes later that year. In addition to titan auteurs names mentioned above, the fest also have faves in Anne Fontaine, Taika Waititi, John Carney and Diego Luna on tap plus will showcase work from Matthew Ross (directorial debut – Frank & Lola) and Matt Ross (sophomore film – Captain Fantastic). Remarkably in a career spanning more than a decade, this formerly untitled project counts as Joshua Marston‘s first feature in the English language and only third feature film. He debut film was workshopped at the 2002 January Screenwriters Lab and was presented at the 2004 edition of the fest and not only would the tense drama play extremely well theatrically, it nabbed it’s star Catalina Sandino Moreno an Oscar nomination. Marston, who takes on a lot of projects namely television gigs between his feature films (Maria Full of Grace was followed by 2011’s The Forgiveness of Blood) he nonetheless been part of the fabric of Sundance working as an advisor at the Institute’s Labs since 2011. Starring Rachel Weisz, Michael Shannon, Kathy Bates and Danny Glover, lensing on his third feature commenced late last year and frankly this could shore up just about anywhere on the film festival circuit. Now titled Complete Unknown,...
