Netflix has greenlit a six-episode dark comedy series from Tom Segura.
Per the official description, the currently untitled series “centers on Segura, who also serves as the show’s narrator, as he takes us through each episode in a series of vignettes. The twisted comedic sensibility of Tom’s standup is the core DNA of this series, where every story will unfold in a hilariously disturbing way only he could imagine.”
Segura wrote, self-financed and produced the pilot before selling it to Netflix, which is producing the full series later this year and releasing it in 2025. Rami Hachach directed the pilot.
Netflix ordered the series based on a pilot that Segura produced himself. Segura also wrote the pilot, which was directed by Rami Hachach.

Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci create earworms about eggs and salt. If you’ve been watching Netflix’s new children’s series, “Waffles + Mochi,” then songs like “Crack Me Up” and “Umami” are already embedded in your head. But for the songwriting team, known to most people as the duo Garfunkel and Oates, found the series offered them a whole new opportunity: To cement themselves as individual songwriters — just Riki and Kate — and write and create the exact kind of music they want.
It all started with a song about a tomato. That was the pitch presented to them by series co-creator Jeremy Konner, who’d worked with the two on the Comedy Central comedy “Another Period.” “He, at first, asked us to write a song when he was pitching the show; it was a concept,” Lindhome told IndieWire. “He called us and said, ‘Hey, can you do me a favor?...

As all parents know, there are three tiers of children’s TV. At the bottom, there is the “Please, just please, give me 20 minutes to finish this” tier — shows you throw on in the hope they’ll anesthetize your child into silence for the amount of time it takes to just make this goddamned call to the pharmacy, please.
The middle tier is the “Huh, this is pretty cute” level — shows with a little sass and verve that you don’t regret displaying to your child’s still-developing sense of self: the “Octonauts” and the “Storybots” and “The Muppets.”
The top tier, inarguably, is “Sesame Street.” Sweet, kind, watchable even for adults, full of smarts and in-jokes and characters that make mistakes but learn from them in a way that isn’t cloying.
And now “Sesame Street” has a companion in that top tier. Netflix, Higher Ground Productions, and creators...

Michelle Zamora, of Viva La Puppet, has worked as a puppeteer on titles including “Garfunkel & Oates,” “Comedy Central’s Adult Swim Fun House” and “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” to name just a few. But stepping into “Waffles + Mochi,” Netflix’s food-based series that starts streaming Tuesday, raised the bar for what puppets could do on-camera — by having them eat.
“I did not think I would be eating soup as a puppet,” Zamora tells Variety. “Puppets usually don’t touch human food because it’s just not practical: you could ruin the puppet, why would you want to do that? Just make a foam cookie or what-not — usually just something that looks like food and they go, ‘Om nom nom nom nom.’ With Waffles, the challenge was that we really wanted to see her experience these foods — and doing it in a way that wasn’t gross.”

The second night of the Creative Arts Emmys Awards kicked off Tuesday.
Among the big winners for the night were “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” which won three Emmys. That includes a win for best writing for a variety series. In addition, “Saturday Night Live” walked away with yet another win in the best variety sketch series category, marking one of three wins it scored throughout the night.
The second installment of “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” picked up the award for best live variety special, which it also won last year. The win also made executive producer Norman Lear the oldest Emmy winner ever at 98, beating his own record when he won at 97.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” also picked up two more awards, bringing its total to four so far. Tonight, the show won for best contemporary makeup for a variety, nonfiction or reality program (Non-Prosthetic) as...

For “Drunk History” co-creator and host Derek Waters, it’s pretty bittersweet to still be campaigning for an Emmy now that his show has been canceled. Comedy Central, which is mostly getting out of the live-action comedy business, announced earlier this month that it had rescinded a Season 7 order for “Drunk History,” and Waters admits it still isn’t clear what happens next.
“It sounds a little dramatic, but it’s like a funeral without any music,” he told Variety‘s Awards HQ. “I would love to finish what I started. It would just be nice to end on your own terms, to say goodbye and not just be like, ‘that’s it.'”
Waters, who created the show with fellow executive producer Jeremy Konner, said he still hasn’t been given an “actual answer why it happened … no one’s called me. I have no idea. I have no verification of it.

Thirteen years ago, I had an idea of filming a highly educated person discussing a history story while highly intoxicated. Afterward, we’d reenact the drunken tale, lip-syncing the modern phrases and swears, word for word. A Drunk History Channel. I teamed up with Jeremy Konner, and the journey began. Thirteen years later, the show that came out of that idea has been canceled — but with 17 Emmy nominations and six seasons of television.

Exclusive: It was revealed tonight during Deadline’s Emmy season virtual screening of Comedy Central’s Drunk History that the Derek Waters-Jeremy Konner series will not be moving forward with a seventh season, originally ordered last summer.
The series’ sixth — and now final — season, which wrapped its run on Aug. 6, 2019, is up for three Emmy nominations, Outstanding Variety Sketch series, as well as Outstanding Costumes and Production Design for a Reality/Variety/Competition series. Drunk History, which is getting a strong push by ViacomCBS in its farewell awards season, has been nominated in the top variety sketch category every year since the category was launched in 2015.
Drunk History will continue to air around the world in various local formats. Waters, who delivered the news that the series has ended on Comedy Central, has a first-look deal with the network and will segue to working on new projects.

The Emmy Awards ballot for Best Variety Series Directing lists 31 episodes, so there will be only five nominees in this category for the first time in three years, under the new Emmy rules. Under the proportional-representation rules for this category, two slots are reserved for the 16 submitted episodes of sketch series, two are reserved for the 15 submitted talk series and the last slot is a free-for-all. The six nominees last year were:
“Documentary Now!” (Alex Buono & Rhys Thomas): “Waiting for the Artist” “Drunk History” (Derek Waters): “Are You Afraid of the Drunk?” “Last Week Tonight” (Paul Pennolino): “Psychics” “The Late Show” (Jim Hoskinson): “Live Midterm Election Show” Winner — “Saturday Night Live” (Don Roy King): “Host: Adam Sandler” “Who is America?” (Sacha Baron Cohen & Nathan Fielder & Daniel Gray Longino & Dan Mazer): “Episode 102”
There is a new rule this year that only two co-directors can be credited per submission.

Monica Sotto was elevated to production designer on “Drunk History” after Chloe Arbiture left the Comedy Central series between the fifth and sixth seasons. Earlier this year, Sotto took home the variety, reality or event special production design award from the Art Directors Guild for her work on the lip-synced historical comedy after being responsible for creating the sets for all 16 episodes of the sixth season. The season finale, “Bad Blood,” was a specific point of pride and is being submitted for Emmy nomination consideration.
“Bad Blood” depicts Egypt and Rome as Mary Mallon spreads typhoid fever and Cleopatra’s sister schemes for power. Both are locations done many times before on-camera, so how did you want to depict them differently?
We definitely have a cap for the budget so that plays a large part in what we can do. Egypt was shot over three days. Luckily L.A. has a lot of “desert.

While Comedy Central’s Drunk History typically groups its tales by thematic episodes, creators Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner’s approach to building a season simply comes from mining the best unknown stories.
In regard to the direction they provide to their research department, Waters says they tell them “to find us the best stories we weren’t told in school, or pitch us a story about someone we know so much about, and it’s a story that we never heard,” he said during the show’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television virtual event. “Of the stories we like the most, we find theme out of that.”
Some of this season’s notable episodes include “Bad Blood,” which features the story about Cleopatra’s (Aubrey Plaza) younger sister Arsinoe (Olivia Trujillo) scheming her way in and out of power in Ancient Egypt. Also, very timely with what’s going on right now,...

Comedy Central has picked up a 16-episode seventh season of Emmy-winning series Drunk History. The renewal is part of a first-look, all-media deal the network has signed with series’ co-creator Derek Waters.
In partnership with Comedy Central Productions, the network’s new studio-production arm, Waters will develop premium comedy content for TV and digital platforms via his Be Nice or Leave production company.
“Derek Waters has repeatedly proven his comedic genius as a creator, actor, and director across multiple platforms through our hit, Drunk History. That series merely scratches the surface of his creative output, and we’re so excited to develop even more projects with him through Comedy Central Productions,” said Sarah Babineau and Jonas Larsen, Co-Heads of Original Content, Comedy Central.
Boundary-pushing Drunk History is nominated for three Emmy Awards this year – Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, Derek Waters for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series, and Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming.

In March 2018, it was announced that the former Us president and Michelle were in talks to produce a collection of series exclusively for Netflix, and in May of that same year, the two finalized a multiyear agreement to produce a diverse mix of content under their Higher Ground Productions banner. Now, almost a year later, we're finally learning about the seven projects, currently in various stages of development.
"We created Higher Ground to harness the power of storytelling. That's why we couldn't be more excited about these projects," Barack said in a statement released by the streaming giant. "Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights, and much more,...

After five seasons, and a sixth in the works, the creators of Comedy Central’s Drunk History say they’re ready to turn the boozy educational program into a feature film, especially since they view every episode as an audition for something bigger.
“All these stories are pitches for us to make a movie,” co-creator Jeremy Konner admitted Sunday at Deadline’s The Contenders Emmys.
Konner and Derek Waters created the liquored-up narration of our nation’s past, with Waters also serving as host.
Produced by Comedy Central Productions, Drunk History features an always-changing cast of actors and comedians who travel the country to present the rich tales that every city has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. Although sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

“The overall goal is we find stories that we haven’t seen in school.

Anyone who has ever taken a history class can tell you that unless you have the right person teaching you, it's going to be pure torment. Obviously, the perfect solution to this problem is to watch drunk comedians try to narrate important moments in history while actors depict that exact narration. Obviously!
Enter Drunk History, possibly the greatest brainchild of Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner, which was recently renewed for a sixth season on Comedy Central. Each episode features Waters as the host, joined by a very intoxicated guest who attempts to coherently recount a historical moment, interwoven with actors reenacting the story and lip syncing the narrator's dialogue. The stories are all true, though the conversations are obviously . . . not so accurate. A majority of the time, the result is hilarious! Sometimes it's also a sh*tshow, but in the best way possible.

Comedy Central’s Contenders Emmys panel focused on three very funny series: Drunk History, Nathan for You, and Broad City. That’s three shows, three moderators, five comically minded creatives, one stage. In short, madness.

Ten years after the invention of the “Drunk History” format, comedian Derek Waters is reconsidering how to describe the performers who get wasted, then narrate their take on a pivotal moment in history. “I want to start calling them ‘storytellers,'” he said. “It sounds more important. I think ‘narrator’ sounds like a voiceover actor.”
Indeed, the term “narrator” doesn’t quite do justice to what intoxicated celebrities bring to the series, which returned to television Tuesday night after nearly 13 months off the air.
