From the jump, the folks behind the hit BBC/Netflix period crime series "Peaky Blinders" aimed high. Creator Steven Knight aimed to tell the story of a Birmingham street gang's ascension in post-wwi England as robustly as possible from its first episode, as we follow Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his fellow Peaky Blinders weather storms of Ptsd, politics, and family life.
Throughout the show's six seasons, the gangster series trod lightly when it came to references to gangster movies that came before, like "The Public Enemy" and "Once Upon A Time in America." On TV, the show shared genre space with predecessors like "The Sopranos" -- a show that, like "Peaky," would get its own follow-up feature film. But sometimes, the connection to classic crime cinema was explicit.

The fifth season of the post-wwi BBC/Netflix series "Peaky Blinders" sees crime boss Tommy Shelby in a Sisyphean struggle to maintain his hold on the power he's gained. Rising from Birmingham gang leader to a member of the House of Commons, Tommy (Cillian Murphy) wrestles with a formidable Scottish gang, a rising fascist with dirt on Shelby, and the fallout of the stock market crash of 1929.
Some of the aesthetics on the stylized series, like the Art Deco-esque geometric stained glass adorning the Shelby stronghold the Garrison Tavern, reflect the show's era. Others are symbolic, like the deep red tones infused throughout the tavern representing both its comforting warmth to the family and the blood on their hands. For series production designer Nicole Northridge, one major influence for season 5 came from an American crime drama about an entirely other kind of tormented gangster.

Warning: contains plot spoilers for Peaky Blinders season six 1-6.
Peaky Blinders is a designer’s dream, says Nicole Northridge. The gangster drama’s visual style, mythological swagger and love of symbolism mean that when it comes to designing its sets, “you can absolutely go to town. You can make it abstract, almost like a graphic novel.” The period backdrops and locations aren’t only laboriously researched by production designer Northridge and her art team in collaboration with director Anthony Byrne, but also woven with symbolic story references. Gold, black, white horses, rising suns, images foreshadowing death and evoking the rot of fascism… season six’s backdrops are studded with thematic visual detail, adding extra layers of meaning if you know where to look.
Gold = Money = Death
Visually, season six is dripping with gold, a symbol of the material wealth Tommy Shelby has amassed over more than a decade of gangsterism.
