It’s been going on for a while, and it’s been even worse post-pandemic, but the Oscar halo effect for Best Picture nominees has diminished greatly.
Even though most of this year’s Best Picture contenders are available in the home, there are three in an exclusive theatrical release which look to make gains by Oscar night, March 10: Amazon MGM’s American Fiction, Searchlight’s Poor Things and A24’s Zone of Interest. For some studios, playing off the heat of Oscar nominations is still a business.
Poor Things is currently playing in 1,400 theaters, the widest it has been following its Dec. 8 release, which notched the third best first weekend theater average ($73K) of 2023. The Emma Stone-starring and produced bawdy female erotic romp busts wide this weekend at 2,200 theaters. This Friday,...

Warner Bros. Discovery shed more streaming subscribers in Max’s first full quarter of existence: July-September 2023. The company lost 700,000 streaming subs in the quarter, it reported on Wednesday; Max and Discovery+ now combine for 95.1 million streaming subscribers.
Wbd’s streaming business was able to turn a profit in the third quarter — just like it did at the beginning of the year. Adjusted Ebitda at direct-to-consumer was $111 million. The same segment lost money in Q2, but surprised with positive Ebitda in Q1, which is also the last time Wbd grew its streaming-subscriber base.
The loss of subs in the past two quarters is not really unexpected. Max, which launched on May 23, is a combination of the former HBO Max and Discovery+. While Discovery+ remains available as a standalone platform, it is now pretty redundant for folks who had previously subscribed to both of the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming services.

Sunday Am: The AMC distributed Taylor Swift: Eras Tour concert movie, per AMC, is eyeing an opening of $95M-$97M this Am, which means for them, the dust hasn’t settled yet. EntTelligence says 4.8M Swifties or people went to see Eras Tour this weekend, having paid an average of $20.75 for a ticket (across all formats). Anything above Joker‘s $96.2M opening is a record opening for the month of October.
But here’s the thing: rival distributors, which have access to all box office data, only see the pic as the second-best opener of October at around $94.3M. AMC, in their first wide release rodeo here, should be careful not to get over their skis, as team Swift will want to know where every nickel is coming from. The Motion Picture & Television Fund has sent out an urgent plea for donations to help below-the-line crew members effected by the ongoing Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes – workers whom MPTF President & CEO Bob Beitcher says, “Have become the forgotten casualties during these strikes.” Many of those seeking assistance, he says, “are at risk of losing their homes, their cars, and their ability to pay utility or medical bills.”
In an open letter to the entertainment community (read it in full below), Beitcher said that “these strikes are having an absolutely awful and devastating impact on the non-striking industry workforce, most especially our below-the-line crews.”
Donations can be made here.
As reported here Wednesday, MPTF has already granted nearly $1 million in financial assistance to industry workers since the Writers Guild went on strike on May 2, followed by SAG-AFTRA on July 14. And during the first seven months of 2023, requests to...

One of the viewers who wasn’t too happy to see Bad Bunny’s performance at Sunday’s Grammys captioned with “Singing Non-english” was U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Long Beach), who apparently reached out to CBS President & CEO George Cheeks wanting an explanation for the blunder.
Viewers griped on social media that the closed captions did not translate what the artist was singing or saying. All they saw were the three words Speaking Non-english, so those who did not speak Spanish could not understand what Bad Bunny sang or what he said when he won the Grammy in the Best Música Urbana Album category.
In response to the backlash, CBS ended up adding Spanish language closed captioning to replays of Bad Bunny’s Grammy performances. Cheeks, meanwhile, responded to an inquiry by Garcia. The letter is below.
Dear Representative Garcia:
Thank you for your letter and sharing your feedback about the Grammy Awards.

Thanks to everyone who chose to Be the Light at HeartShare’s 2021 Virtual Gala, HeartShare is thrilled to announce that it reached its event fundraising goal of $1M.
The Gala, which took place on April 15th, is HeartShare’s largest annual fundraising event and the $1M raised will go a long way toward supporting an annual budget that depends, in part, on contributions and donations raised from special events.
The funds will help cover unexpected and unbudgeted costs incurred due to Covid-19 and reduced government funding. Ultimately, the funds will be applied to the programs and services HeartShare provides to help people with autism and other developmental disabilities live their best lives: group homes, pre-schools, schools for children and teens with autism, day habilitation programs, vocational training programs and our recreational, family support and long-term therapy services.
“The HeartShare family is incredibly loyal and supportive,” says HeartShare President and CEO William R. Guarinello.

PBS and CBS led the way at the 38th annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, which were presented tonight at Lincoln Center in Manhattan. ABC and HBO tied for third with five Emmys apiece. CNN and and Univision had three each. Discovery Channel and MSNBC were the only other nets to take home multiple awards, winning two apiece. For the full list of winners presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, click here.
“I can’t think of a time in our recent history when the need for clear and factual reporting was more paramount,” NATAS President & CEO Bob Mauro said. “Tonight, we honor those who are steadfast in their belief that an informed electorate is the cornerstone of our great democracy.

John Malone‘s company proposes a stock swap that would value Sirius Xm at $3.68 a share — a mere 3% premium over Friday’s closing price of $3.57. Liberty Media already owns more than 52% of the satellite radio company’s shares, so this wouldn’t change control, and it says that it won’t squeeze out other investors. It will only go ahead if a special committee of independent directors, and other shareholders, support the change. They likely would insist on a higher price. The goal is to “simplify the capital structure and pursue other economic opportunities,” Liberty CEO Greg Maffei says. The company also says that Sirius Xm shareholders will benefit by ending up with 39% of Liberty, though their shares would not entitle them to vote on its affairs.
