Chicago – Creating a complex story and delivering it in a spectacular way was the accomplishment of two self-described “best friends.” Jim Cummings and Pj McCabe are the co-writers, directors and friends of the new film “The Beta Test” – releasing November 5th, 2021 – a thriller that takes on the darker side of human motivations.

Jim Cummings is also featured as Jordan, a wannabe Hollywood agent-type and player who is constantly striking out in his various pitches. His life takes a turn when he receives a mysterious invitation for a no-strings-attached sexual encounter, six weeks before his marriage to Caroline (Virginia Newcombe). His decision to proceed is the impetus for his future and the story’s direction. This is a maniacal festival of truth, as Jordan’s inability to cover up his sins devolve into an ever-deepening spiral. Cummings is great as a pretty boy whose darkness is a shadow over all lives he encounters,...

Neon presents Spencer on just under 1,000 screens, Pablo Larraín’s well-reviewed psychological drama about the weekend Princess Diana rewrote the future of the British monarchy. The film is said to be looking at a $2 million-$2.5 million opening with an 84% Certified Fresh critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes but a 50% audience score (albeit from fewer than 50 ratings).
Meanwhile, Eternals is tracking to a $70M+ opening with flipped scores — 49% critics, 86% audience.
This is a period where counter-programming — a key role of independent film, specialty and arthouse fare, documentaries, barely exists. If recent Marvel Cinematic Universe release weekends are precedent, this one will be all Eternals all the time for the mostly younger crowds that are repopulating theaters.
Yet, even with no new wide-release superhero-mega-franchise hitting last weekend, nothing else opened well (except maybe Funimation’s My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission). That includes indie Last Night in Soho despite a solid media campaign,...

Jim Cummings and Pj McCabe’s “The Beta Test” is with a mad soufflé of a plot that starts with a Hollywood murder, climaxes in a nationwide sex conspiracy, and touches on everything from Harvey Weinstein to the WGA’s fight against packaging fees in between. At its heart, however, this endearingly overstuffed indie hinges on a simple observation that has nothing to do with digital growth, belittled assistants, or the Tiger Woods-directed all-dog reboot of “Caddyshack” that’s mentioned in a throwaway line by a talent agent who only speaks in throwaway lines: It’s never been easier to feel like your life isn’t good enough, and yet it’s never been harder to fuck around and find out. Literally. Temptation is only a click away, but you’d basically have to stage the heist from “Ocean’s Eleven” just to cheat on someone without getting caught.

"Now I'm suspicious of everyone... We're so terrified of stepping out of line." IFC Films has just unveiled a second official trailer for The Beta Test, a seductive, provocative thriller from filmmaker Jim Cummings (of Thunder Road and The Wolf of Snow Hollow). The first UK trailer arrived a few weeks back, time for another look. Cummings teams up with actor Pj McCabe to co-write & co-direct this film, which initially premiered at the Berlin Film Festival this year. It's opening in the US in art house cinemas starting in early November. A married Hollywood agent receives a mysterious letter for an anonymous sexual encounter and becomes ensnared in a sinister world of lying, infidelity, and digital data. It's partially a commentary on the world of agents in Hollywood, and partially a commentary on the disruptive nature of sexual provocation, how easily it can tear things apart. The film stars Cummings & McCabe,...

Indie director Jim Cummings and co-star Pj McCabe have made a scornful part-thriller about an unctuous agent in thrall to the system
Writer-director-actor Jim Cummings’ has already made two films, Thunder Road and The Wolf of Snow Hollow, which were very well received on the American indie circuit. His latest, The Beta Test, co-written and directed with its co-star Pj McCabe, is part delicious satire of Hollywood culture and part frustratingly muddled thriller. But the good bits are sufficiently impressive it wouldn’t be fair to hold its flaws against it too much. We mustn’t be greedy for perfection.
Greed, as it happens, is probably the major sin of a Tinseltown agent called Jordan (played by Cummings), followed closely by lust, wrath, pride and envy. Given his rigorously gym-toned figure it would seem that Jordan is less guilty of gluttony or sloth, but there’s probably more than enough...

In Thunder Road, Jim Cummings crafted, from scripting through to performance and direction, a fractured anti-hero whose sense of self was slipping away from him - and he's back (alongside co-star/co-director/co-writer Pj McCabe) with a variation on this theme with his second movie, which also offers some sharp satire on the film world itself.
"It's exciting. I'm excited," is something of a mantra for Jordan (Cummings), not just in his Hollywood agent day job but as a go-to phrase for his fiancee (Virginia Newcomb), a fallback position when he hasn't been listening. Things are slipping for Jordan, a man who has the outward slick appearance of a professional whose upwardly mobile trajectory has no intention of stopping and yet whose internal anxiety levels are off the charts.

Like his films, Jim Cummings is hard to classify. He’s a true multi-hyphenate, having worked pretty much every job one can on a film set. For his acclaimed 2018 feature “Thunder Road,” he not only served as writer, director and star, but editor and composer as well. That film, which was funded partially by a Kickstarter campaign, went on to win best narrative feature at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival and had several distribution offers before he opted to self-release the movie. That bold choice, and the quality of his work, has caused Cummings to become somewhat of a guru of indie filmmaking, particularly on social media where he is known for giving both encouragement and no-nonsense advice to fellow artists.
While he isn’t a household name yet, Cummings might be something better — a creator who can make unique films with his distinctive voice by his own rules and not...

Jim Cummings’ thriller “The Beta Test” has been acquired by IFC Films.
Cummings wrote, directed and stars in the film that was an official selection for this year’s Berlin International Film Festival. IFC will distribute the film theatrically, on digital platforms and on demand this fall.

In the late ’90s, when Jim Carrey did his pivot away from rubber-faced anarchy to became a serious actor, the detour didn’t last all that long, but he gave three stupendous performances, and one of the things that made them great is that Carrey, in those roles, seemed to be expressing more of himself than ever. He didn’t jettison his snappish, ironic, through-a-glass-snarkly comic vibe; rather, he showed you the anguish and romantic fervor on the other side of it. But imagine, for a moment, that you were watching a Jim Carrey who pushed his private obsessional qualities one step further over the edge — who was still, at times, quite funny, only now his motormouth personality was the sound of an ordinary man slowly and seriously falling apart.
Jim Cummings is that actor. In “The Beta Test,” he plays a Hollywood talent agent who’s like one of...

A filmmaker really coming into his own, Jim Cummings didn’t waste much time post Thunder Road setting himself up with consecutive projects in The Wolf of Snow Hollow (read review) and The Beta Test – which he co-directed, co-wrote and co-stars with Pj McCabe. Of all the films opening this weekend at the specialty box office, all eyes will be on Judy, the biopic about Hollywood icon Judy Garland. The film made its premiere at Telluride and played the Toronto Film Festival to a great ovation, prompting early awards contender buzz for star Renee Zellweger.
Joining Judy in a trip for the box office rainbow this weekend: A24’s The Death of Dick Long from Daniel Scheinert; Samantha Buck & Marie Schlingmann’s Sister Aimee; the gripping documentary Always In Season; and the satire The Day Shall Come.

Written by Tom Edge and directed by Rupert Goold, Judy showcases Zellweger in the title role in a biopic that’s not cradle-to-grave but rather focuses on a specific, significant piece of Judy Garland’s life.
In 1968 London, Garland is set to perform a five-week sold-out run at the nightclub The Talk of the Town.

A cringe-worthy movie of Alabama backwater haplessness that could easily earn a promotional tie-in with the annual excellence-in-stupidity honors known as the Darwin Awards, “The Death of Dick Long” may be a made-up story, but inside this crisis management suspense-comedy is a weirdly down-to-earth humanity about the ripple effects of out-of-nowhere recklessness.
Native Alabamian Daniel Scheinert — one half of the directing duo the Daniels (with Daniel Kwan) — might have a tough time selling his home state’s citizens on what exactly he’s saying with screenwriter Billy Chew’s “Fargo”-esque yarn of one good ol’ boy’s very bad demise. But indie moviegoers looking for an off-road excursion likely to trigger more than a few exhortations of “oh no” — as both laughs and gasps — could turn this “Death” into something with cult life.

Where to begin here? Sometimes, a film can paint itself into a corner that it never quite gets out of. Such is the case with The Death of Dick Long, which opens this week and is hiding a hell of a reveal midway through. With no exaggeration, it’s one of the most unexpected moments in cinema this year. However, that’s the point where the tale begins to crumble, ultimately proving ever so slightly unworthy of the time investment. A boldly unique work, it sadly can’t quite stick the second half, preventing one from actually embracing it as audiences might otherwise have. The movie is a self proclaimed backwoods noir, one tinged with some black comedy. Zeke Olsen (Michael Abbott Jr.), Earl Wyeth (Andre Hyland), and Dick Long are buddies, who spend many a night practicing with their band. Or, at least they spend some portions of the evenings practicing,...

We’ve got a red-band trailer to share with you today for a dark comedy called The Death of Dick Long and as you’ll see, things get crazy and weird!
The movie is being directed by Daniel Scheinert, co-director of Swiss Army Man, and if you’ve seen that movie, then you know you can expect this next film to be completely off the wall. I think it looks pretty funny, but you might have a different reaction to the trailer.
Here’s the synopsis:
Holy Crap. Dick is dead. Died last night after band practice, and his bandmates, Zeke & Earl, don’t want anybody finding out how. That’s too bad though, ‘cause news travels fast in small town Alabama, and these guys suck at covering their tracks. The authorities haven’t ID’d the body just yet, but Zeke’s wife (Virginia Newcomb) and his daughter are suspicious already.

"Did you hear about the murder?" A24 has unveiled the first official trailer for a wacky, hilarious, extra weird indie dark comedy called The Death of Dick Long. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to some divisive reviews, but that's what makes it so good. From director Daniel Scheinert (of Swiss Army Man), the film is about Zeke, played by Michael Abbott Jr., and Earl, played by Andre Hyland, two friends who are just too dumb to figure out how to cover up for their other friend's accidental death. The cast includes Virginia Newcomb, Sarah Baker, Jess Weixler, Sunita Mani, Roy Wood Jr., Poppi Cunningham, and Janelle Cochrane. It's some sort of wild, redneck dark comedy, that some will find hilarious, others will find too dumb. Up to you to decide? At least the poster is amazing. Have fun. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Daniel...

Wayward characters have struggled to cover their crimes throughout film history, but the conundrum at the center of “The Death of Dick Long” is more abstract than that. In director Daniel Scheinert’s Alabama-set dark comedy, the aforementioned Dick dies for mysterious reasons in the opening scenes, leaving dopey pals Zeke (Michael Abbott Jr.) and Earl (Andre Hyland) stumbling through a series of comic misadventures to hide the circumstances of his demise.
The new trailer for the movie, which A24 releases on September 27, doesn’t spoil that twist — but it certainly captures the loopy pleasures of this oddball caper, which blends small-town Southern eccentricities with unusual emotional resonance. “Dick Long” premiered at Sundance’s Next section in January, where even audiences who expected something off-kilter didn’t quite know what they were in for. And that’s a testament to this singular movie’s sneaky appeal.

When the directing duo known as Daniels brought Swiss Army Man to Sundance in 2016 they took audiences aback with their peculiarly original vision, involving fart-propelled, jet-skiing corpses and boner compasses. Daniel Scheinert, one-half of the directing team, has now returned with The Death of Dick Long, a more naturalistic but also funnier (and more disturbing) follow-up. A butt rock epic built on bad decisions with plenty of affectation for its idiotic characters, the deeply dark comedy does for small-town Alabama what Fargo did for Minnesota.
We’re introduced to Zeke, Earl (Andre Hyland), and Dick (Scheinert) at their weekly band practice, which quickly devolves into a night of beer-chugging, weed consumption, fireworks, and another activity which is best left unspoiled. On this particular night, something goes gravely wrong as we soon find Dick bleeding out in the back of Zeke’s station wagon for undisclosed reasons. Zeke and Earl lug...

For its first hour, “The Death of Dick Long” is a derivative and clunky black comedy that cribs from “Fargo” and trafficks in crass white-trash stereotypes, but that’s only part of a larger agenda. With the arrival of a kinky twist, the movie undercuts its lowbrow humor with real emotional stakes. The story of two close friends contending with the secret of their mutual buddy’s accidental death seems fairly straightforward — until it subverts expectations with gratifying results indicative of shrewd storytelling at work.
That’s no surprise given that “Dick Long” is the first solo directing credit for Daniel Scheinert, following his co-directing on “Swiss Army Man” (aka the “farting corpse movie”) that managed to turn its toilet gags into a surreal tone poem. “Dick Long,” which stems from Billy Chew’s script, lacks the same abstract weirdness that made “Swiss Army Man” such an indelible cinematic delight.

The Death of Dick Long
Proving that they are indeed not attached at the hip, while we await their next team effort, one half of Daniels in Daniel Scheinert appears to have wandered off with The Death of Dick Long for a possible flipside of Weekend at Bernie’s. A solo directing effort backed by the A24 folks and one of those off the radar projects (not unlike how A24’s The Eighth Grade came to fruition), shot by Madeline’s Madeline‘s Ashley Connor (see our Sundance Trading Card profile) this stars Michael Abbott Jr., Virginia Newcomb, Andre Hyland (another Sundance Trading Card alumni) and Jess Weixler from much more than Teeth fame.…...

Chicago – The premiere of a new director’s work is cause for an event, and the new film “Reparation” will get its Chicago premiere on September 10th, 2016, at the suburban Wilmette Theatre (details below). “Reparations” is a war and military story, but mostly about the war at home after the service.
Bob (Marc Menchaca) is an ex-military policeman in the Air Force who undergoes a mental breakdown of mysterious origins. His memory is erased from his time in the service, and he essentially begins a new life when released. He meets Lucy (Virginia Newcomb), and their connection leads to the birth of a child Charlotte (Dale Dye Thomas). All seems normal again, until a military comrade from the past named Jerome (Jon Huertas) unexpected pops into Bob’s life again. He may be the key to unlock his past, but what other demons will also emerge?
Marc Menchata and Jon Huertas in ‘Reparation,...

While I’ve seen more than a few indie horror anthologies of late—some good, others forgettable—the anthology film seems to be making a comeback. Like the classic George Romero/Stephen King Creepshow (1982) and the impending The ABCs Of Death due out later this year, The Theatre Bizarre (2011) is one of those films that lives up to its buzz….and fans’ expectations. Six shorts linked by framing scenes make up The Theatre Bizarre, a film being distributed by Severin Films.
The film’s opening and framing segments, directed by Jeremy Kasten (Wizard Of Gore {2007}) titled “Theatre Guignol” star the wonderfully bizarre Udo Kier as a life-size marionette and story teller in an abandoned theater. Virginia Newcomb plays a young woman obsessed with the old theater, who sneaks into it one fateful night to hear the strange stories. Throughout the segments are a cast of weird,...

Title: The Theatre Bizarre Directors: Jeremy Kasten, Richard Stanley, Buddy Giovinazzo, Tom Savini, Douglas Buck, Karim Hussain and David Gregory Starring: Udo Kier, Catriona MacColl, Virginia Newcomb, Suzan Anbeh, Andre Hennicke, Debbie Rochon, Tom Savini, Lena Kleine, Victoria Maurette, Lindsay Goranson, Guilford Adams Six discrete stories of varying levels of effectiveness come together in “The Theatre Bizarre,” a macabre horror anthology that eschews the laborious weirdness of something like Christopher Landon’s “Burning Palms,” and instead focuses more forthrightly on crafting and sustaining a mood of uneasiness. The main commingled narrative ingredients are genre staples — sex, compulsion, paranoia and obsession – which work well for a movie that doesn’t shy away from...

Horror anthologies are a hit and miss affair. While some installments succeed wildly, others invariably fall flat on their face. “The Theatre Bizarre”, the latest in a long and distinguished line of these films, is very much in this category. Moments of near greatness exist right along side segments where you’re counting the seconds until it ends. That’s also part of the fun of anthologies. There’s a sense of giddy mayhem when something clicks and comes together. It gets in, does its thing, and gets the hell out without wasting any time. Shorts can be efficient little buggers from time to time. And even when things don’t work, the time commitment is minor. “The Theatre Bizarre” calls to mind “Tales from the Crypt” in that the individual chapters are strung together in a framework of another story. Possible schizophrenic Penny (Virginia Newcomb) stares out the window of her dingy apartment,...

For today's The Theatre Bizarre exclusive, we're sharing another clip. This time, it's a snippet from the wraparound segment featured in this anthology horror film. The clip is a preface to Tom Savini's contribution, "Wet Dreams," and features Virginia Newcomb and the incomparable Udo Kier.
Responsible for the framing devices in the film is director Jeremy Kasten, who we had the pleasure of having on Choice Cuts not long ago. The Theatre Bizarre opens on January 27 and we have two new locations to add to the list of theaters playing the film.

A new trailer has been released for an insanely crazy looking surreal film called The Theater Bizarre. This looks like the kind of horror film you have to have an acquired taste for. The most looks incredibly far out and depending on the type of person you are... it could be entertaining. I'm not sure what the hell is going on in this trailer other than a punch of random disturbing shots of madness. I will remind you that this is a red-band trailer and is Nsfw.
The film is an anthology of horror ffeaturing stories from David Gregory, Buddy Giovinazzo, Richard Stanley, Douglas Buck, Karim Hussain, Tom Savini and Jeremy Kasten.
But, there is a synopsis, and here it is...
