Bestselling novelist whose military thrillers, including Patriot Games, were made into hit films and spawned video games
Tom Clancy, who has died aged 66, dominated the bestseller lists of the 1980s, with a series of novels that thrust his appealing CIA analyst Jack Ryan into situations that combined the intricacies of cold-war politics with precise details of modern military operations and equipment. With the end of the cold war, Clancy moved seamlessly into the era of terrorism, with no decline in sales; only Jk Rowling and John Grisham joined him in meriting first printings of more than 2m copies.
Seventeen of his books topped the New York Times bestseller chart, and his income as a novelist may have been matched only by Stephen King. He also became one of the first writers to recreate himself as a brand-name, helped by astute use of video games. His company Red Storm produced a string of games,...

I've only read a couple of Tom Clancy's novels, largely because of the immense detail he writes with and not being able to find large enough amounts of time to dedicate to his stories wholly. That said, I've loved his work since I was quite young and it's sad to hear of his passing at the age of 66. Clancy's novels spawned feature film adaptations such as The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears, all introducing one of his most popular characters, Jack Ryan, who will be seen again in the coming months in a brand new feature titled Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit featuring Chris Pine in the lead role. Previous actors to play the character include Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. Clancy's John Clark character has yet to receive as much feature film attention despite popping up twice already,...

In the new Cold War submarine thriller "Phantom," David Duchovny plays a special forces Kgb agent whose mission aboard the sub captained by Ed Harris -- who's on his last command before retiring -- could start World War III. Duchovny sat down with Moviefone to discuss tattoo confusion, his dislike of unitards, and forgetting the submarine-themed episode of "The X-Files" he shot back in the '90s. Moviefone: I just saw Ed Harris in the hallway. I felt like I should salute. David Duchovny: I feel the same way. You punch Ed Harris in one scene. How many takes did you do of that? I don't think I had to punch Ed too often. He got me back, he slams my head into the periscope and that was an actual hit. I also got talking with naval expert Ken Sewell downstairs, who was the technical advisor on the film.

"Jack Ryan," the newest adventure of Tom Clancy's signature hero, officially started production, and while we have high hopes for star Chris Pine and director/villain Kenneth Branaugh, there are also a few nagging fears that have us wondering how this will all play out.
These are our Hopes, Dreams, and Fears for "Jack Ryan."
Hopes
It wasn't that long ago that Tom Clancy was responsible for some of Hollywood's best and most popular thrillers, but in the decade since "The Sum of All Fears," the author's movie presence has been sorely missed. If handedly intelligently (and this is where we thank our lucky stars for Kenneth Branaugh), "Jack Ryan" could help set off a string of strong Clancy adaptations. We've had to sit through too many bland thrillers in recent years to stomach anything short of Clancy's best.

Similar to their own beach read-based "Jack Reacher," Paramount has taken author Tom Clancy's most famous hero, CIA analyst Jack Ryan, and given him a new lease on cinematic life with next year's creatively-titled blockbuster "Jack Ryan."
Kind of a "Jack Ryan Begins," if you will, the new movie stars Chris Pine as Ryan, a character who first hit the screen more than 20 years ago in "The Hunt for Red October." With the Cold War long behind us, is the character still relevant all these years after his inception?

Jack Ryan seems like a no brainer for a film franchise, but something always seems to stop it from gaining speed.
Tom Clancy’s protagonist first hit screens in the form of Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October. Ryan was next on screen, this time with Harrison Ford playing the role, in Patriot Games, which is technically a prequel to October. Ford returned as Ryan for Clear and Present Danger. Ben Affleck took over as Ryan in The Sum of All Fears, and that’s the last time the character was seen on screen.
All of the Ryan films have been successful both critically and financially, so it strikes me as odd that it’s been so long since we’ve seen Clancy’s CIA analyst on screen. There’s a wealth of source material here thanks to Clancy’s great books, and a film universe that has...

It turns out that Kevin Costner could be the Nick Fury of Paramount's "Jack Ryan" film franchise going forward.
The "Man of Steel" actor is in talks to join "Jack Ryan," the as-yet-untitled next movie to be based on Tom Clancy's book series about the titular character. But Deadline is reporting that Costner is also in talks to join the spinoff franchise called "Without Remorse" as the link between the two movies.
Costner would play William Harper, a character unique to the films who is described as "a true blue American idealist who recruits and mentors both Ryan and John Kelly." While the "Jack Ryan" movie will center around Ryan, "Without Remorse" would tell the story of John Kelly, who by the end of the movie becomes the CIA operative John Clark.
Deadline also reports that Paramount is looking to Tom Hardy to play John Kelly in "Without Remorse.

Threatening to create a void of celebrity-fronted roots-rock bands in every casino across this great land of ours, Kevin Costner is considering putting down his guitar and committing himself wholly to a different sort of Americana—the jingoistic, paranoid sort represented by Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan franchise. Costner has not only signed on to the previously reported mentor role in Paramount's Ryan reboot, he's also considering a deal that would have him starring in a spinoff franchise based on Clancy's Without Remorse protagonist, John Clark. Tom Hardy is being courted for the lead role in Jack Ryan spinoff Without Remorse. The potential spinoff franchise centres on John Clark, who is described variously as the counterpart and "dark side" to CIA operative Jack Ryan (Chris Pine). Deadline reports that Paramount are keen to enlist Tom Hardy for the role of Clark, but no indication has been given regarding Hardy's level of interest. Kevin Costner will star in both the new Jack Ryan film and Without Remorse as Ryan and Clark's idealistic mentor William Harper. You know how in the Marvel Studios films, Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) went around all the movies, sometimes appearing for just a few minutes, in order to link the films to the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe that Marvel was building? Well, it looks like Paramount is going to use Kevin Costner to do that with their Jack Ryan franchise. After being courted earlier this month to appear as Jack Ryan’s would-be CIA mentor in the upcoming “Jack Ryan” reboot, Kevin Costner has officially come aboard. He will play a CIA operative name William Harper, described as “a true blue American idealist who recruits and mentors both Ryan” and, later, does the same for John Kelly aka John Clark, the hero of Paramount’s other Jack Ryan franchise, “Without Remorse”, which is currently being scripted by “The Unusual Suspects’” Christopher McQuarrie. You read the vague implication of that headline just right: Paramount are going to make a cinematic Tom Clancy universe, and Kevin Costner will be their Nick Fury. In following up what we heard two weeks ago, Deadline tells us the actor is set to appear in Kenneth Branagh‘s Jack Ryan reboot, then play the same character in Christopher McQuarrie‘s own adaptation, Without Remorse. After that, he might even get his own film.
Not as Nick Fury, I mean. Costner is actually signed to play William Harper, described as being “a true blue American idealist who recruits and mentors both Ryan and John Kelly,” the latter of whom becomes “John Clark” by Remorse‘s conclusion. Deadline is reporting that director/writer Christopher McQuarrie has been hired to adapt Tom Clancy’s novel Without Remorse. Though he’s only set to write the project, he does have his eye on the director’s chair too.
Apparently, the studio was pretty happy with the work that McQuarrie did on the upcoming Tom Cruise film Jack Reacher, and they want to stay in business with him.
Paramount has tried to adapt the book in the past but its “incredibly bleak and violent storyline” has made it a tough sell. Though it takes place in the Jack Ryan universe, the novel features another character, John Kelly (aka John Clark).
For those unfamiliar with the plot, check out the summary below:
John Kelly, former Navy Seal and Vietnam veteran, is still getting over the accidental death of his wife six months before, when he befriends a young woman with a decidedly checkered past.

"The Usual Suspects" scribe Christopher McQuarrie is near a deal to pen and potentially direct the film adaptation of Tom Clancy’s 1993 novel "Without Remorse" for Paramount Pictures says Deadline.
The 1971-set book has John Kelly, a former Navy Seal returned from Vietnam, taking charge in two operations - an official military rescue of POWs, and a personal vendetta against the drug runners who raped, tortured and killed the first woman he became involved with since his wife's death.
The book is a prequel to events in Clancy's other books as Kelly would later become John Clark, the dark supporting character that would feature in several Jack Ryan novels and films. Willem Dafoe played him in "Clear and Present Danger" while Liev Schrieber took on the role in "The Sum of All Fears".
The studio has made several attempts to adapt the property but the bleak and violent storyline has proven difficult to adapt.

Jack Ryan isn’t the only recurring hero in Tom Clancy’s series of techno thriller novels. The other guy who pops up regularly is one John Clark, a former Navy Seal turned CIA black ops operator, who often worked with Ryan in the Clancy novels. Now Paramount thinks it’s high time Clark got his own movie. The studio is close to a deal with Christopher McQuarrie to adapt the Clancy novel “Without Remorse”, which traces Clark’s origins during and after the Vietnam War, and before he eventually joined the CIA. Clark, like Ryan, has aged quite a bit in the books, but of course like the upcoming “Jack Ryan” reboot, it’s almost a certainly McQuarrie will be writing about the adventures of a much younger John Clark to keep it in line with the new Jack Ryan. Just as Ryan has been played by multiple actors in the movies,...

While he helped re-launch Doctor Who in 2005, Christopher Eccleston’s career since then has been somewhat predictable, in the sense that the aloof actor chooses his roles that seem based more on what he wants to do, versus the money and popularity it brings. This is good for him, in a lot a ways, as a lot American actors seem to take roles that are more in quantity than of quality. While the British actor remains indifferent about why he chooses to distance himself from Doctor Who (was Russell T Davies “gaying” up the sci fi institution too much for his liking as some have suggested) as its global reach continues to grow, he has now earned his first huge role in Hollywood, that as the villainous Malekith The Accursed in Thor: The Dark World. Considering the popularity of Ubisoft's Splinter Cell games, it should come as no surprise that we might eventually see a feature film based on the series. What is a bit surprising is that after five installments (with a sixth on the way) and 22 million units sold, this is basically the first we've heard of the possibility. It would seem that Ubisoft is finally ready to shop around the rights to the Tom Clancy franchise, and they've had some studio interest over the past few weeks from both Warner Brothers and Paramount Pictures. Will Sam Fisher be heading to the big screen at some point in the near future? I'd say you can count on it. Exclusive: Studios are kicking the tires on Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, the hugely popular video game by Ubisoft. I’ve heard that in recent weeks, Warner Bros had engaged in talks, but now, the conversation is with Paramount Pictures, which is the frontrunner to land the project. The studio would not comment other than to say there is no deal. The original game, revolves around Sam Fisher, a covert operative who so far has been put on six missions covering six installments of the game that has sold 22 million units and spawned several novels. Videogame movie deals are always complicated–and there haven’t been that many film successes–and Ubisoft will be very involved and retain control over how the game is translated into a film. Stay tuned to see if Paramount closes the deal, which is likely how this will go down. While Clancy merely endorsed the vidgame,...

HollywoodNews.com: You often hear about former child stars who feel like their early work on a TV show typecast them for life and thwarted their career.
Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who we first got to know as Zack Morris on ‘Saved by the Bell,’ is not one of them.
He played Zack for seven years (starting with 1988′s ‘Good Morning, Miss Bliss’ – as the show was originally called – right through ‘Saved by the Bell: The College Years’ in 1994. He was the central character of a show that also launched future stars Mario Lopez, Tiffani Thiessen and Elizabeth Berkley.
Once it left the air, Mark-Paul kept busy doing TV movies (‘The Princess and the Marine’), a feature film (‘Dead Man on Campus’) and starred in two short-lived TV series (‘Hyperion Bay’ and ‘D.C’.)
Then in 2001 came the breakthrough role of Det. John Clark on ABC’s ‘NYPD Blue.

Shawn Ryan, creator of the critically acclaimed series “The Shield” is to adapt “Without Remorse”, a Tom Clancy bestseller from the early 90′s.
Unlike many of Clancy’s books, Without Remorse does not centre around the character of Jack Ryan (who has already been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, with a rumoured Chris Pine reboot also in the works), following instead CIA-operative John Kelly. John Kelly appears in some of Clancy’s books under the alias John Clark and was played by Willem Defoe in Clear and Present Danger and Liev Schreiber in The Sum of all Fears.
In Without Remorse, Kelly goes up against a Baltimore drug ring who were responsible for the death of his girlfriend and although the novel itself is set in the 1970′s, no decision has been made yet as to whether the film will be set in the present day.

The creator of The Shield Shawn Ryan has signed on to adapt Tom Clancy's 1993 best-selling novel Without Remorse for Paramount Pictures. To make things more appealing Star Trek writer and producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will produce the film.
This is a great team of talent coming together for a film, and Tom Clancy fans should be happy. The Shield was one hell of an incredible series, and he is also the executive producer of a new TV series for F/X called Terriers, about an ex-cop and a former criminal who go into business together as private investigators.
Without Remorse follows one of Clancy's recurring characters, John Kelly (who later assumes the alias of John Clark, and appears in the Jack Ryan novels like Patriot Games and Rainbow Six), as he seeks revenge against the Baltimore drug ring responsible for the death of his girlfriend. While the...

Although his gritty police drama "The Shield" has been over for a couple years, executive producer Shawn Ryan has been standing strong with successful series like "Lie to Me" on Fox and now "Terriers" on FX. But now it looks like the TV creator and producer is making the jump to the big screen. Vulture reports Ryan has been hired to write an adaptation of Tom Clancy's 1993 novel Without Remorse, which follows recurring character John Kelly as opposed to the cinematically familiar Jack Ryan. In addition, it looks like writers and producers Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Transformers) will be producing this. Though a young Jack Ryan makes an appearance in the novel, the story is concerned with John Kelly (who, in later books, assumes the identity John Clark) as he gets involved in a secret operation to rescue 20 American pilots from a North Vietnamese prison camp. ...

The Shield creator Shawn Ryan has signed on to adapt Tom Clancy’s 1993 best-seller Without Remorse for Paramount Pictures, reports Vulture. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are said to produce the film through their production banner.
The book Without Remorse follows one of Tom Clancy’s recurring characters, John Kelly (who later assumes the alias of John Clark), as he seeks revenge against the Baltimore drug ring responsible for the death of his girlfriend. While the book is set in the 1970s during the Vietnam War, insiders say there is no definitive plan to make the film a “period” piece or modernize for today’s standards.
Paramount is already in the process of rebooting another Clancy character with the Jack Ryan series, which already has Chris Pine attached to play the role of Ryan.

"The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan has signed on to adapt Tom Clancy's 1993 best-seller "Without Remorse" for Paramount Pictures reports Vulture.
The 1971-set book follows John Kelly (aka. John Clark), a former Navy Seal returned from Vietnam, taking charge in two operations - an official military rescue of POWs, and a personal vendetta against the drug runners who raped, tortured and killed the first woman he became involved with since his wife's death.
Clark has been portrayed on-screen twice before by Willem Dafoe in "Clear and Present Danger" and Liev Schrieber in "The Sum of All Fears". Attempts have been made to translate this book to film before, but have failed each time.
Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and David Ellison will produce.

Shawn Ryan is not to be confused with Jack Ryan, Tom Clancy's most famous character. For one thing, he's bald. For another, he created The Shield, which is more than Cold War hero Jack ever did. That said, Ryan is now on course to develop the story of another Clancy hero, as he signs on to script Without Remorse. The story is one of Clancy's novels which focuses on hulking ex-Navy Seal / Vietnam veteran / CIA agent John Kelly (aka John Clark) as he tries to take revenge on the Baltimore drug ring responsible for murdering his girlfriend. The novel is set during the 70s and the Vietnam War, but there's no word yet on whether the film will stay in that period.Kelly, as Clark, appeared in the Jack Ryan books Rainbox Six and Patriot Games, and was previously played by Willem Dafoe (Clear and Present Danger) and Liev Schreiber...

Successful screenwriter and now director Stuart Beattie has written an adaptation of Tom Clancy’s “Without Remorse” and is keen to make the project his next shot at directing.
First (chronologically) in Clancy’s “Ryanverse” series, the thriller spans four separate story arcs during the Vietnam Warm but primarily fills in backstory details on John Clark, a Navy Seal who takes on a drug smuggling ring in Baltimore.
Paramount Pictures purchased the screen rights shortly after the novel was published in 1993. After several false starts, the studio is trying again with Beattie, who told MovieHole transforming the 700-page book into a script “the hardest adaptation I’ve ever done.” He sees Josh Hartnett as a possible Clark or an actor in their twenties.
The studio recently hired “Lost” director Jack Bender to re-introduce Clancy’s main hero, Jack Ryan (played by Chris Pine), in a terrorist thriller not based on a Clancy original.
