Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World is what happens when you toss The Hunger Games, Mortal Kombat, Happy!, and Crank into a blender. While that sounds rad, the slurry of upbeat action and nonsense plot tangles is much more baffling in execution. Mohr’s vision borrows heavily from button-mashy videogames and dystopian graphic novels, blending Cyberpunk futurism with real-world dictatorship commentaries. There’s a message about fascism and rebellion somewhere in Mohr’s madcap martial arts violence, but it’s lost under the piles of enemy corpses. Boy Kills World never knows the movie it wants to be past a killing spree, as the story makes one poor choice after the next, like a genre satire that becomes what it tries to parody.

Most animated shows have a general idea of what their characters are going to be when they start casting, but in the case of the Fox family sitcom "Bob's Burgers," they actually worked in reverse. The series went backwards by starting with a cast in mind and then created the Belcher family inspired by the cast and their specific talents. It's a pretty unique way to create a television show, but it worked great because the voice actors each bring so much to the table that the show actually uses a mixture of written script and improv to bring the Belchers to life, something very few animated shows would ever even attempt.
H. Jon Benjamin is perfect as the family's fumbling but loving patriarch, Bob, while John Roberts somehow manages to change his voice to the perfect pitch for Bob's wine-chugging, song-singing wife Linda. It's not super unusual for voice...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Archer: Into the Cold,” the “Archer” finale.]
Much like “Wonka” held back its ace in the hole for a majority of the movie, “Archer: Into the Cold” — the long-awaited series finale of Adam Reed’s long-running satiric espionage sitcom — saves one of its best-ever creations for last.
Actually, I’m a little mad about it. How dare we get only a precious few minutes with Tiny Barry™, the ideal form of so many forms taken by Archer’s one-time rival agent, turned villainous cyborg, turned computerized consciousness who was living inside the office refrigerator to start the series finale? How dare he not get a full season to stretch out those tiny little legs, with a special episode told from Tiny Barry’s doll-sized point of view? How dare Krieger (Lucky Yates) keep a “sentient robot in defiance of god” under wraps all these years, when it’s this teensy and this adorable and has...

Adam Reed was searching for inspiration. He’d just sold his stake in the production company he co-founded, 70/30 Productions — responsible for his animated series Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo — and fled to Europe, to embark on what he calls a “pilgrimage.” One day during his expedition, he was idling at a café in Salamanca, Spain, and observed a group of stunning women. He wondered who could possibly have the courage to approach them. And then, all of a sudden, a suave fellow sat down at the table, ordered a...

Mike Flanagan’s creative partnership with Netflix has produced several memorable pieces of art over the last several years. His latest project for the streaming service, the gothic horror series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” is yet another that will have viewers talking.
The eight-episode drama skillfully blends the work and imagery of Edgar Allen Poe with a timely narrative about the Usher family, a privileged group who own a pharmaceutical company that is largely responsible for the current opioid crisis. Bruce Greenwood leads the cast as Roderick Usher, the patriarch who must confront his past in the wake of the violent deaths of all of his children. Joining Greenwood are several actors who’ve starred in Flanagan’s previous Netflix series, including Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas and Zach Gilford, and new additions like Mary McDonnell and Mark Hamill, who turn in fantastic performances in the gripping tale.

After 14 seasons of bawdy spy hi-jinks, Archer is calling it quits — but the Fxx comedy managed to deliver one final twist on the way out.
If you haven’t watched in a while, here’s a quick update: Lana is running the spy agency now after the departure of Malory (voiced by the late Jessica Walter), and the agency has a sassy new British spy, Zara Khan, played by Natalie Dew. Other than that, it’s pretty much business as usual in Thursday’s series finale, with Archer and his pals springing into action when a fleet of killer drones start murdering ex-iia employees.

I first heard about FX’s “Archer” in the ready room of Vaq-135, a navy squadron who were serving an interminable deployment aboard an aircraft carrier somewhere near Midway Island. (This sounds very much like a humblebrag that Sterling Archer would obnoxiously drop into conversation). It was 2010, and the pilots had lost whatever idealism they’d once had during an endless deployment that had them flying 12-hour missions from the Persian Gulf to Afghanistan. I started hearing the officers stage-whisper “danger zone” whenever one of them got called in to see the commanding officer over some minor fuck-up or summoned to the flight deck in the pitch black of an ocean night.
Now, famously, “Danger Zone” is a Kenny Loggins song that plays a significant role in the homoerotic original recipe “Top Gun,” the urtext of naval aviators. But the way the pilots were saying it suggested they were taking the piss.

There is a new way for fans of Archer who have Spectrum cable but not Hulu to watch the Fxx animated series’ 14th and final season. The Emmy-winning comedy has expanded the availability of its current 14th season by making episodes available post-premiere on VOD systems for the FX and Fxx linear channels.
The issue arose after the new agreement between Disney and Spectrum parent Charter, which came together after 10 days of interrupted carriage, included the drop of eight Disney ad-supported cable networks, including Fxx and Fxm, from Spectrum platforms. As Deadline reported last week, FX brass were looking for solutions on Archer, which was seriously impacted as its final season had just premiered when the Disney networks went dark on Spectrum systems on Aug. 31.

And so we conclude the thrilling story of Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre, Guy Ritchie’s return to stylish spy capers with reliable main man, Jason Statham in tow. A sharp, witty and colourful actioner about a top secret agent trying to foil a billion dollar weapons sale between an arms dealer and a set of dastardly Ukrainian Mercenaries. Which would have released last year had Russia not invaded the Ukraine and the country’s population subsequently revealed themselves to be proud defenders of their homeland, holding the line against a vastly better equipped foe. Suddenly casting them as the villains in anything would feel grossly distasteful as well as at-odds with the reality of their national character. So Operation Fortune got shelved for a year, then quietly shunted onto Amazon Prime today.

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The series: "Frisky Dingo"
Where you can stream it: HBO Max and Adultswim.com (with a cable login)
The pitch: Before going on to make the wildly popular spy spoof series "Archer" on FX, Adam Reed teamed up his "Sealab 2021" co-creator Matt Thompson to create "Frisky Dingo," a bizarre animated comedy spoofing superheroes and villains, American politics, and celebrity culture. A warning: the series debuted on Adult Swim in 2006, airing late at night, and it did just about everything possible to push the envelope, so some of the jokes have aged pretty poorly. However, if you can look past a few gags that absolutely wouldn't fly in 2022 (and for good reason), "Frisky Dingo" is a wildly funny and oddly prescient little cartoon,...

Adam Reed's animated sitcom, "Archer," has undergone massive tonal shifts and genre changes over the course of its 13-season run. Reed initially conceived "Archer" as a genre parody of spy thrillers that featured overt satire and quick-witted humor. The first few seasons of the show were glorious, following the shenanigans of Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) and his dysfunctional, mostly incompetent colleagues who are part of an intelligence agency. Season 10 was almost the end of "Archer" when the show creators changed its structural formula — while some of it worked, and most of it missed the mark, a shift to self-contained anthologies marked an interesting turn for the animated dramedy.
"Archer" revolves around the titular protagonist, who is supposed to parody a stereotypical James Bond-like figure: Sterling is exceptionally self-centered, a raging alcoholic, emotionally unavailable, and not very good at his job. Benjamin makes brilliant work of highlighting...

Adult animation fans are finally getting the crossover event of our dreams, as Linda Belcher herself confirmed that the upcoming "The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror Xxxiii" will feature a crossover between everyone's favorite animated families.
"The Simpsons" set the bar for animated Halloween TV specials for years. Their "Treehouse of Horror" parodies represent some of the best and most memorable episodes of the juggernaut series' history. We've personally ranked some of their 15 best segments, but trying to choose from over 30 years of horror comedy greatness is a fool's errand. Not to be outdone, the creatives over at "Bob's Burgers" have also prioritized Halloween specials, which we've also ranked, because we love you and want you to have nice things.
The episode will mark the first crossover event with "The Simpsons" and "Bob's Burgers," although both shows have made appearances on other animated shows. "Bob's Burgers" had a fan-favorite crossover with "Archer,...

For more than 12 years, Fxx's hit spy comedy "Archer" has proven its ability to constantly reinvent itself. Since the show's fifth season, seasons of the show have taken on distinctive themes, with Sterling Archer and the rest of the show's irreverent secret agents having done everything from spending a season selling cocaine in a "Miami Vice"-inspired setting to spending multiple seasons in alternate timelines taking place entirely within the mind of the comatose Archer. Through all of these extremely different settings, the show's madcap comedic bite has remained sharp, using its constantly shifting landscape to stay funny and fresh throughout its run.
"Archer" also needed to evolve behind-the-scenes, with series creator and longtime showrunner Adam Reed departing the show for good after the tenth season. A showrunner's exit can sometimes spell doom for a series, but "Archer" managed to retain a writing staff strong enough to maintain the show's quality.

Since 1992, the TV academy has honored the work of voice actors almost annually, beginning with half a dozen cast members from “The Simpsons.” From 2014 onward, the Best Voice-Over Performance award has been bestowed separately from the Best Narrator one, with the inaugural recipient of the former prize having been Harry Shearer of “The Simpsons.” This year’s lineup features seven nominees, including one former winner and two posthumous contenders.
Maya Rudolph, who took this award in 2020 and 2021 for “Big Mouth,” is now seeking her third win for the same show. She is involved in her second consecutive rematches with Julie Andrews (“Bridgerton”), Stanley Tucci (“Central Park”) and Jessica Walter (“Archer”), the last of whom is on her second post-death bid in a row. The remaining three slots are filled by category newcomers F. Murray Abraham (“Moon Knight”) and “What If…?” duo Chadwick Boseman (who died in August 2020) and Jeffrey Wright.

It’s an extremely rare feat when a television series, animated or otherwise, is able to produce thirteen seasons of storytelling. Archer‘s journey has been anything but conventional and the silly spy comedy has experienced enough genre makeovers and stylistic experiments that a return to its espionage roots has been oddly fulfilling. Season 13 comes in after a few seasons of normalcy, yet Archer’s most recent years have provoked more change than ever before in its cast. Sterling has struggled to figure out where he belongs in a world that’s been able to move on without him, but now even the creature comforts that he’s previously taken for granted, like his mother Malory, are gone.
Sterling Archer and the rest of The Agency are forced to roll with some big swings while under the new management of Fabian Kingsworth and Iia–the International Intelligence Agency. Season 13’s premiere,...

Plot: Archer and The Agency have been acquired by Fabian Kingsworth and the spy conglomerate known as Iia (International Intelligence Agency). As the gang struggles to find their identity performing odd missions for Fabian, one question arises: will they be able to maintain independence, or will they succumb to their corporate overlords?

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia recently finished its 15th season and Archer is going into its 13th season.
However, neither show is heading toward the end of its line, according to FX Entertainment President Eric Schrier.
Sunny, which with its latest season beat the record for longest running live-action comedy, bypassing The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, was renewed for multiple seasons in December 2020, taking it through to its 18th season.
FX Networks @ TCA: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
“It’s interesting with that show,” Schrier told Deadline. “The guys have been doing it for so long. As long as they feel that they creatively can maintain its vibrancy, they want to continue to do it. Creatively, the show is excellent, and we think the last season was as strong as ever. The fans love the show, so we’ll keep going as long as as they want to keep it going.

It is very sad to see a monkey die. That fact is not in question. If there’s any reason to care about “Marvel’s Hit Monkey,” the latest Hulu attempt to slap some title branding on a comic book adaptation in the hopes of luring in some eyeballs, it’s that someone should definitely answer for the monkeys dying.
As the name of the show might indicate, the one to mete out that vengeance is Hit-Monkey, a Japanese macaque whose quest to track down those responsible for the murder of his tribe leads the 10-episode season along a river of blood and a dense network of criminals and assassins. Monkey’s compatriot along the way is human hitman Bryce (Jason Sudeikis), dispensing his workmanlike knowledge of the Tokyo underworld to help guide Monkey through the big city.
If this were actually Monkey’s show, “Hit-Monkey” would be better for it.

The sun has set on the twelfth season of Fxx’s stalwart animated spy comedy, “Archer,” and while the series has already been renewed, Season 13 will get the gang back together save for one pivotal character: Malory Archer.
Voiced by Jessica Walter, whose March 24 death broke the internet’s collective heart, questions began swirling immediately, wondering how the series would handle the loss of the beloved performer. Would another actress step into the role? Would Malory meet an untimely end?
Those questions were finally answered this week with the release of the Season 12 finale, “Mission: Difficult.” In the episode itself, Malory is largely absent, as Sterling Archer battled his kidnappers with a little help from his colleagues. When Malory does appear, it’s (uncharacteristically) as a woman of few words — saving her son, before disappearing into the chaos. The Agency triumphs in the end, save for a last-minute reveal in...

This article contains spoilers for Archer season 12 episode 5.
Archer has a fascinating relationship with change. Major elements like the show’s genre have transformed, but a constant through the years are the characters and their relationships with one another. The series has made it clear that these character dynamics are quite toxic in many ways, some of which have left the characters looking for ways to grow. The most recent seasons have prioritized the cause and effect nature of Archer waking up from his coma and returning to work, which has left everyone feeling very raw and vulnerable, including Sterling Archer himself.
Archer’s latest episode, “Shots,” dresses itself up as a playful night of liquor and laughs, but it becomes a deep look into Archer’s poisonous effect on his friends, specifically Cyril.
