“This Morning” anchors Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield – the U.K.’s answer to Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest – have gone their separate ways in a shock split.
Schofield announced on Saturday he would be stepping down from the show. In his statement he implied the decision had not entirely been his.
“I have always been proud to cover fascinating stories on ‘This Morning,’” he said in a post on Instagram. “But recently, ‘This Morning’ itself has become the story. Throughout my career in TV – including the very difficult last few days – I have always done my best to be honourable and kind. I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love.”

Arranged marriage is a tried-and-true trope in Bollywood romcoms, which typically champion love and social progress over tradition, even if they’ve hardly moved the needle for decades despite the genre’s immense popularity. Though set in London and revolving around arranged marriage in the South Asian diaspora, it’s easy to make assumptions about Toronto Film Festival premiere “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” based on genre conventions and cliché.
But this is most definitely not what Bollywood romcom enthusiasts might expect. For starters, the story concerns overseas Pakistanis and not Indians. The film also doesn’t outright frame arranged marriage as something outdated and stifling. If anything, it encourages viewers to not rush to judgment.
Moreover, its protagonist is actually a white woman. Zoe (Lily James), is a socially conscious documentary filmmaker from an ethnically diverse part of London. Her mother, Cath (Emma Thompson), while fully embracing the multiculturalism around her,...

Each year, the BAFTA TV Craft Awards recognize the behind-the-scenes production talent like writers, editors and costume designers behind the year’s hit shows. In an unprecedented era where the coronavirus pandemic has led to a global lockdown and the cancellation of events, the British Academy Television Craft Awards will go ahead on Friday as a digital-only ceremony, hosted by Stephen Mangan from a socially-distanced studio.
Ahead of the awards show, Variety talked to the nominated costume designers: Caroline McCall (BBC One’s “His Dark Materials”), Michele Clapton (Sky Atlantic/HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) and Odile Dicks-Mireaux (Sky Atlantic/HBO’s “Chernobyl”).

Costumers who worked on the BBC and HBO drama His Dark Materials are making scrubs for British medics on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Helping Dress Medics initiative was launched by costume maker Dulcie Scott over the weekend and has raised more than £8,000 on GoFundMe to help supply protective clothing to local hospitals.
The team, which includes numerous costumers from around the country, is expecting a delivery of materials today and plans to have supplied scrubs to the frontline by the end of the week.
“We are liaising with hospital staff directly in the areas we live and taking advice from them about what they need, so that we can specifically help them.

Costumers behind the Bad Wolf-produced HBO and BBC fantasy series “His Dark Materials” have united to make scrubs for medical staff fighting the coronavirus pandemic in the U.K.
The initiative, titled “Helping Dress Medics,” brings together a number of staff in the series’ costume department in Cardiff, Wales, and around the U.K. to stitch garments and supply the National Health Service (NHS) hospitals closest to them.
“This should make things quicker, keep costs down and ideally keep any risk of contagion to a minimum,” the group said in their fundraising statement.
“We are liaising with hospital staff directly in the areas we live and taking advice from them about what they need, so that we can specifically help them. The nature of how the virus is spread means that the demand for scrubs is especially high.”

"12 Years a Slave" picked up its first (and only other) guild win since tying for the PGA prize Saturday night, taking out fellow Oscar nominees "The Great Gatsby" and "American Hustle" in the period category (indeed, the only category with Any Oscar nominees.) Elsewhere, "The Hunger Games" again took the fantasy prize for sequel "Catching Fire," while "Blue Jasmine" won in the contemporary arena. "Behind the Candelabra," "Downton Abbey" and "House of Cards" won throughout the TV categories. As Guy pointed out in his breakdown of the Best Costume Design Oscar race Friday, the Costume Designers Guild isn't necessarily a perfect barometer for how the Academy will vote on the discipline. Over the ceremony's 14-year history, the winners have overlapped eight times; so just over half. But that's better than BAFTA (though granted the guild has more shots on goal every year with three separate categories). So will Oscar voters...

AwardsLine Deputy Editor Anna Lisa Raya provided on-scene coverage tonight. Updated With All Winners And Speeches: 12 Years A Slave’s Patricia Norris and Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s Trish Summerville nabbed top film awards tonight at the 16th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. Norris won the Outstanding Period Film Award while Summerville scored the Outstanding Fantasy Film Award. The win clearly vaults Oscar-nominated Norris into frontrunner status. She was not present but her son Patrick accepted on her behalf. “She guaranteed me this wouldn’t happen. I’m kind of a little nervous but she gave me a few things to say in case it did happen. She’s honored that the Costume Designers Guild has recognized her. She thanks you and I appreciate you. I can’t wait to give this to her,” he said. Blue Jasmine’s Suzy Benzinger took the third film award of the night for Outstanding Contemporary Film.

Attention all brides planning a Downton Abbey-inspired ceremony: consider your "something borrow" covered. Thanks to British jeweler Bentley & Skinner, you can now rent Lady Mary Crawley's dazzling wedding tiara. The exact 45-cart diamond hairpiece that appeared on the PBS drama is available for $2,000 a day. (oh, there is also the added free of a $200,000 deposit.) According to the brand's website, the Georgian tiara of yellow gold and silver garland leaves and floral clusters actually dates back to 1800. But while the hair accessory was truly vintage Mary's stunning silk dress was not. The show's costume designer Caroline McCall has shared the gown cost over $6,000 to create. Still,...

At its essence, "Downton Abbey," PBS' biggest hit ever, comes down to Julian Fellowes' mission for accuracy.
Certainly the spot-on acting and seamless directing are critical to the drama, but the reason it never wavers is because not one teacup or glove is off.
"There should not be anything that jars," costume designer Caroline McCall tells Zap2it. "And I would hope that [viewers] just get caught up in it and lost in it. We are trying to create this world as authentically as we can."
McCall ensures that the Dowager Countess' (Maggie Smith) staid silks and Martha Levinson's (Shirley MacLaine's) flashy dresses and feather accessories could never be confused.
"I go through the script and break down for each character and list what each character will require for each episode and see where the gaps are, and go through the costumes and see what is available and appropriate,...

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

What a busy twelve months it’s been for costume design. Really though, this art, or craft, or business (Deborah Nadoolman Landis insists it is definitely a business) gets more talked about each year. 2013 was especially exciting however as it seemed every month something even more thrilling arrived to fawn over. In the last few weeks alone we have had The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Sleepy Hollow, and now American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street on the horizon. Dipping back further, it was Stoker that got us excited about subtext, The Great Gatsby that slammed the lid on that twenties revival once and for all, and Behind the Candelabra that put Michael Douglas in a 16ft fox fur cape and white brocade jumpsuit.

From Fantine's tattered red frock in Les Misérables to Mary Todd Lincoln's period-perfect gowns (both in the slideshow above), made-for-movie ensembles say a lot about a character and stir up viewers' emotions. So it was only "fitting" that on Tuesday night, just days before the Oscars, Hollywood's hottest stars got together at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to celebrate the people who make those magical fashion moments real: costume designers. Winners at the 15th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards included Skyfall designer Jany Temime, Anna Karenina's Jacqueline Durran, Smash's...

Los Angeles — Anne Hathaway was deemed best dressed – by people who dress her for work.
The "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Dark Knight Rises" actress, who's nominated for the supporting actress Academy Award for her role in "Les Miserables," was honored Tuesday evening with the spotlight award at the 15th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. The spotlight award honors actors and directors for their collaborations with costume designers.
"I especially treasure the moment that happens on set when all the choices have been made, rehearsal is done, you're about to start, you look down and you believe in what you're wearing, so that way when you look up, you are gone, and it's finally the character's moment to come alive," said Hathaway while accepting her trophy.
Other celebrity attendees at the Beverly Hills Hotel ceremony hosted by "Community" star Joel McHale included Jon Hamm, Connie Britton, Shirley MacLaine, Amy Poehler,...

Finally the Cdg nominations have been announced, and while they right some of the wrongs made by Oscar and chiefly BAFTA, ample opportunity to reward some really creative and effective costume design has once again been overlooked.
We have indicated at length our views on the Academy and BAFTA’s nominations (Here and Here) so in the interests of not sounding like a broken record we shall stick to the facts. Well, perhaps just the odd observation… Nominations below:
Excellence in Contemporary Film
Beasts of the Southern Wild – Stephani Lewis
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – Louise Stjernsward
Silver Linings Playbook – Mark Bridges
Skyfall – Jany Temime
Zero Dark Thirty – George L. Little
(Sorry, but at least one of these choices is just plain bizarre. Thumbs up for Zero Dark Thirty though)
Excellence in Period Film
Anna Karenina – Jacqueline Durran
Argo – Jacqueline West
Les Misérables – Paco Delgado
Lincoln – Joanna Johnston
Moonrise Kingdom...

Costume designer, Caroline McCall, created a lacy long-sleeved gown festooned with dainty Swarovski crystals for Lady Mary's big day. She crowned the bride with a vintage veil and diamond tiara from U.K. jeweler Bentley & Skinner, which...

In the October 19 issue of EW, "Les Miserables" costume designer Paco Delgado talks sartorially translating the look and feel of Victor Hugo's classic novel to the big screen, while "Downton Abbey" wardrobe head Caroline McCall talks dressing Season 3's new addition, Shirley MacLaine. Highlights below. Delgado on authenticity in "Les Miserables": "The first thing Tom [Hooper] said was that he wanted to be very faithful to the period and Victor Hugo's story...[For Anne Hathaway's character, Fantine,] we worked with clingy fabrics and used an airbrush to darken the sides of her costume to make her look even thinner." And on making Hugh Jackman look less, well, jacked: "Hugh [Jackman] wanted Valjean to look more bourgeois and relaxed about his appearance when he becomes the mayor, so we added padding to make it look like he had a little bit of a belly. You can barely notice it, but Hugh asked for it...
