Following two sold-out limited seasons at London’s Barbican, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s acclaimed stage version of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli classic My Neighbour Totoro will transfer to the West End early in 2025.
The show broke box office records during both its inaugural 15-week term in 2022 and repeated that success on its second iteration, which played for 17 weeks from last November until last month.
Griselda Yorke, My Neighbour Totoro’s executive producer for the RSC, revealed that more than 290,000 saw the production at the Barbican.

Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company is bringing back its barnstorming stage adaptation of famed Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki’s hand-drawn 1988 classic My Neighbour Totoro for a second season at London’s Barbican in November.
The show will play 17 weeks at the arts venue located in the capital’s City district from November 21-March 23.
It follows an inaugural 15-week run that closed January 21 after playing to record-breaking audiences of more than 130,000, according to data we requested from the RSC.
Director Phelim McDermott told us “that for lots of children” the show was “their first experience of visiting the theater.”
But there was another demographic that fascinated him.
“There were a lot of video and games enthusiasts, a lot of them in their late teens, who really got into it,” said McDermott, who also is co-founder and co-artistic director of the Improbable theater company.

Two new works based on existing material dominated the nominations for the 2023 Olivier Awards, the top theatre honor in Britain. “My Neighbour Totoro” and “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” lead the play and musical fields with nine and eight bids apiece. The former is a stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film of the same name, brought to life in a visually stunning production featuring impressive puppetry by Basil Twist. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” uses songs from the Richard Hawley album and new material to tell the story of three families in a Sheffield housing complex.

The stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli animator Hayao Miyazaki’s classic 1988 film My Neighbour Totoro, officially opening Tuesday night at London’s Barbican Theater, has attracted immense interest from the international theater community. Stage producers and theater owners from New York, Paris, Australia, Korea, Canada and Australia have been tracking the progress of the production being presented by composer Joe Hisaishi and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
“There has been a lot of interest,” Griselda Yorke, the show’s executive producer for the RSC, told Deadline. “Lots of people are coming to see it, which is really gratifying. But there’s nothing more concrete than that it’s sparking a lot of interest at this stage of the game.”

Jim Henson’s Creature Shop animatronics and visual effects studio, based in Los Angeles, has teamed with Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company to produce life-size puppets for the RSC’s stage adaptation of legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki’s 1988 hand-drawn classic My Neighbour Totoro.
The RSC’s most ambitious project to date — even more so than the award-winning theater company’s original productions of musicals Les Miserables and Matilda the Musical — My Neighbour Totoro now has creatives working on it at bases in London, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Los Angeles and Tokyo.
Show will feature the score that composer Joe Hisaishi created for the film, plus additional music that wasn’t used in the movie.

Famed Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi has partnered with the U.K.’s Royal Shakespeare Company to create a stage version of Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki’s 1988 hand-drawn classic My Neighbour Totoro, a beloved film that follows the adventures of two young sisters who move from Tokyo city to the countryside.
Set in 1950s Japan, the film introduces us to Satsuki and Mei who move with their father to their new home, near a forest. Left to their own devices, they discover spirits and magical creatures; two furry ones are of particular interest — a giant fluffy creature known as the Totoro, and a mammoth cat bus that takes on passengers then soars off into the sky.
Hisaishi will executive produce the show with the RSC in partnership with Studio Ghibli, where Miyazaki creates his films, in collaboration with UK theater company Improbable and Nippon TV.

Since the abrupt cancellation of nearly all live events globally, it’s been encouraging to see how quickly people involved in the arts and entertainment communities have pivoted to recording, posting, and sharing work on social and streaming platforms. We’ve had livestreams of concerts, intimate performances (such as Rolling Stone‘s own “In My Room” series), and pseudo-variety shows cobbled together from people’s living rooms (and bathtubs).
But most of these have been palliative: A way for artists to share, emote, and connect while required to stay put.

Basil Twist, the puppeteer and MacArthur “Genius” Grant winner, began his career way, way downtown. He’s still working there — current example: the 20th anniversary production of his breakout show “Symphonie Fantastique” — but he’s also found his way to venues of all shapes and sizes all over the world.
That includes Broadway, where the interdisciplinary nature of puppetry proves a challenge. “I always fall in between and mess all that up,” Twist said on the latest episode of Stagecraft, Variety‘s theater podcast. “There’s not a puppetry department, there’s not a puppetry union. And so, every puppet [for Broadway] is sort of: Is it a costume or is it a prop? And sometimes it’s a scenic thing.”
Even so, puppetry is no stranger to Broadway. “But a lot of the biggest successes are ones where the puppeteers are visible,” Twist notes, citing shows like “The Lion King,” “Avenue Q” and “War Horse.

Theater-makers Mimi Lien, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Basil Twist were among the 24 2015 MacArthur Fellowship, or “genius grant,” recipients announced Sept. 29, by the MacArthur Foundation. Each of these exemplary talents is due to receive a “no-strings-attached” $625,000 grant to continue creating and showcasing their work. Tony winner Miranda has been enrapturing sold-out audiences of late with the premiere of his hit Broadway musical, “Hamilton,” in which he stars; in addition, he wrote the book, music, and lyrics. As he did with 2008’s Tony-winning “In The Heights,” Miranda expands the Broadway genre, telling the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and infusing it with the American immigrant narrative—mixing in hip-hop, R&B, jazz, blues, and classic showtune-style songs for good measure. Puppeteer Basil Twist is an already established name in the arts, known for his breathtaking underwater puppet show, 1998’s “Symphonie Fantastique.” His work can next be seen alongside legendary downtown performers Julie Atlas Muz...

Basil Twist has been famous for stretching the boundaries of puppetry at least since his 1998 water-tank ballet of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. For Twist, the aim of the boundary-stretching seems at first to be abstraction; Symphonie’s leading roles were played by feathers, glitter, dyes, and bubbles. Likewise, in The Rite of Spring, a stunning three-part program set to Stravinsky, there are no goofy-faced sock people or mouthy marionettes. In the curtain-raiser, the four-minute Feu d’artifice (Fireworks), a large Futurist painting comes to life, with twirling disks and pyramidal prisms that unfold and shut like mouths or books. No characters, no tale.As the short evening (part of Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival) proceeds, both seem to creep in regardless. In the commedia dell’arte–inspired Pulcinella Suite, dark figures in tuxedos and net face masks manipulate white tubes of various lengths, at first purely in geometric patterns...

Photographer-turned-filmmaker Bobby Sheehan began his career documenting the late-'70s NYC punk scene, which was around the time that he befriended cabaret singer and drag artist Joey Arias (also memorably seen in Elvira, Mistress of the Dark and Wigstock: the Movie). However, it wasn't until Arias found and shared his biggest success with puppeteer extraordinaire Basil Twist—their wild 2008 stage collaboration "Arias with a Twist"—that Sheehan decided to turn his camera on the both of them in Arias with a Twist: The Docufantasy:
