The title of Rose Troche’s film, “My Fake Boyfriend,” may be clunky, but it captures the outrageous premise of this latest gay romantic comedy. When stuntman Andrew is stuck in a toxic relationship with a self-absorbed narcissist, his best friend Jake and his girlfriend Kelly (Dylan Sprouse and Sarah Hyland) decide the only way to break the cycle is with a white lie: the creation of a new (fake!) online boyfriend. Hijinks and an Irl romance ensue in a film that, no matter its contemporary setting, feels like a throwback to an earlier era of Drew/Sandra/Julia-led vehicles. For better and for worse.
Then again, “My Fake Boyfriend” has enough plotlines at play to make it feel like any number of movies. There is Andrew’s increasingly unmanageable lie of a boyfriend, who overnight becomes an internet sensation (having a rocking bod and a global influencer/activist/philanthropist...

"I don't want the whole town getting into a panic over nothin'." Breaking Glass Pictures has debuted an official trailer for the indie sci-fi film Watch the Sky, which will be going straight to VOD coming up next week. Even though this isn't that impressive, we still like featuring cool indie films from up-and-coming filmmakers anyway. Watch the Sky is about two brothers who send a balloon into the sky in hopes of getting some of their own video footage of space. They end up getting more than they bargained for when they discover UFOs. The film features Renée O’Connor, Jed Sura, Luke Albright, Amie Farrell, Miracle Laurie, Carol Mansell, and introducing Karson Kern and Miles Muir. This looks super low budget, but I appreciate that they actually show the aliens in daylight (and not only at night). Might be a cool watch. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster...

Delirium, the production company whose maiden outing was the 2016 Bill Oberst Jr.-Armand Assante hit thriller Stressed To Kill, has just announced it will go into production on Purgatory Road in November 2016 for delivery mid-2017.
Directed by Mark Savage, scripted by Savage and Tom Parnell, and produced by Chris Smernes, the team behind Stressed To Kill, the film has been described as hardcore horror with a bloody helping of twisted “faith”. Set in the American South, it depicts the adventures of two brothers, –– one a psychotic, ex-communicated priest (Gary Cairns; Daylight’S End, Justified, Monumental), the other an increasingly troubled sidekick (Luke Albright; Devil’S Pass, 12 Rounds, Burn Notice) –– whose unconventional mission involves a traveling confessional and a distorted view of salvation. Entering their perfectly bloody world is a mysterious woman (Trista Robinson; The Human Race, Silent Retreat, Malignant) whom, while offering potential assistance,...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by IFC Films. Director: Renny Harlin. Writer: Vikram Weet. Cast: Holly Goss, Matt Stokoe, Luke Albright, Ryan Hawley and Gemma Atkinson. The Devil's Pass aka The Dyatlov Pass Incident is a found footage film from director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2). This title takes on a non-fiction event, the death of nine Russian hikers, and turns it into fiction, with the introduction of time travel. Five American characters and documentarians grate on the nerves, while the film struggles to build speed and tension. The Devil's Pass is just another average found footage film, in this overcrowded sub-genre. The story begins with five American university students. They are all really excited! to travel to the Ural Mountains, in Russia. Here, they hope to unravel a fifty year old mystery: the death of nine experienced hikers. These hikers were found mostly naked,...

It kind of a strange curiosity that sometimes films get tagged with generic titles that have horror catchphrases or words that are horror staples (i.e. blood, devil, dead).
Sometimes too, the poster art for a film does it a disservice. Put both of those typical occurrences together, and you have the makings of creating the likely possibility of looking over a pretty good film. Add the final nail to the proverbial coffin with a high profile Hollywood director that had a heyday in the style over substance action film era of the late 1980’s and 90’s, and this one may get scrolled through the Netflix selections without a second thought or glance. Such may be the unjust fate of this film Devil’s Pass directed by Renny Harlin.

The Dyatlov Pass Incident is the name given to a real life disaster, occurring in 1959, in which nine Russian hikers were found dead in the Ural Mountains. The peculiarities of their deaths, which remain unexplained, have made the story a hit amongst conspiracy theorists, whose theories range from the Yeti monster to a Russian Military wipeout.
Renny Harlin’s The Dyatlov Pass Incident follows five American students making a (fictional) documentary on the incident, in which they will film their own journey retracing the steps of the fateful nine to discover, and film, what really happened. Bringing together filmmakers Holly (Holly Goss), Jenson (Matt Stokoe) and Denise (Gemma Atkinson), with experienced mountaineers Jp (Luke Albright) and Andy (Ryan Hawley), they set off for the affectionately named, ‘Mountain of the Dead’.
In many ways, the found-footage genre is a great facilitator for this story. The strong opening, done in mockumentary style newsreels,...

Based on a true story:
In February, 1959, nine Russians hikers ventured into the Ural Mountains on a trip that should have been manageable for a group with their vast experience. Two weeks later, all nine were discovered dead. A search party found the hikers’ tents ripped open from the inside and all seemed to have died from hypothermia. Aside from a few fractures and broken bones, there appeared to be indication of foul play. With no compelling evidence or witnesses to account for the puzzling night, the case quickly fell into legendary infamy. Many have theorized that a small avalanche caught them off guard, forced them to cut through their tents and make an escape into their snowy surroundings where they froze. The riddle has baffled investigators, researchers and authorities ever since.
