Pour a glass of whiskey neat, because Hozier has topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time ever with his viral hit “Too Sweet.” After initially debuting at No. 5 and quickly climbing to No. 2, the Unheard EP track now stands as the Irish singer’s highest performing effort, besting his 2013 smash “Take Me to Church,” which peaked at No. 2.
Per Billboard, the domination of “Too Sweet” also marks the first time an Irish artist has secured a No. 1 song on the Hot 100 since Sinéad O’Connor accomplished the feat in 1990 with “Nothing Compares 2 U.” In fact, Hozier is just the fourth Irish artist in history to hit No. 1 on the chart, with O’Connor, U2, and Gilbert O’Sullivan as the only other Irish acts to have done so.

The year in music keeps heating up. Following new albums from the likes of Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Vampire Weekend and Taylor Swift, now Billie Eilish is throwing her hat back in the ring with her third studio album. She has announced that “Hit Me Hard and Soft” will be released on May 17. Watch the mysterious announcement video above.
Her first album made history. 2019’s “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” was the number-one album of the year on the Billboard 200. Then it swept the Grammys in 2020, claiming Album of the Year, Record and Song of the Year (both for “Bad Guy”) and Best New Artist. That made Eilish the youngest Album of the Year winner in history at just 18 years old. She also became the third artist to win all four of those categories, following Christopher Cross and Adele, and she was just the second artist to...

Joseph Kahn primarily works as a music video director, having collaborated with the likes of Taylor Swift, Backstreet Boys, Rob Zombie, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, U2, Aerosmith, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Eminem, Maroon 5, Shakira, and many more – but he has also made a few feature films over the years. He made his feature debut with the 2004 action comedy Torque, and has followed that up with the comedy Bodied and the horror film Detention – which we’ve covered for both Awfully Good and Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. Now, Variety reports that Kahn is making a creature feature called Ick, and Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Mena Suvari (American Beauty) have signed on to star in the film.
Ick is coming our way from Interstellar Entertainment and producer Steven Schneider. The film aims to “evoke the timeless creature features of the 1980s with an ambitious arsenal of scares and comedy.

Brandon Routh and Mena Suvari will lead the cast of Grammy-winning director Joseph Kahn’s next film, “Ick.”
The film aims to evoke the timeless creature features of the 1980s with an ambitious arsenal of scares and comedy. Routh stars as Hank, a high school science teacher who still pines for his childhood sweetheart, played by Suvari. While discovering he may have a teenage daughter, portrayed by Malina Weissman (“Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events”), Hank must grapple with a terrifying alien anomaly (the titular “Ick”) invading their small town.
Interstellar Entertainment, co-founded by Udaya Sharma, D.C. Cassidy and Michael Fisk, is backing the project. The company is emerging as a powerhouse in the independent film space, currently in the midst of a $100 million fundraising effort.

I throw around the concept of “Grammy darlings” a lot, but what exactly constitutes a Grammy darling? Is it just an artist who doesn’t lose Grammys often, like U2, Adele or Bruno Mars? Let’s go through a few top names.
Beyoncé: Darling
Listen, the most awarded person in Grammy history is definitely a darling. Granted, she has yet to win Album of the Year. However, more impressively, all of her projects have won at least one Grammy. Most have won multiple, including “Dangerously in Love,” “Lemonade,” and “Renaissance.” Beyoncé also gets nominations for pretty much anything she submits, and will likely become the first artist to nab nominations in rap, rock, R&b, dance, pop and country. On top of all that, it’s rare for Beyoncé to miss nominations in the general field, especially with no nominations review committees anymore to potentially force her out.

All late-night hosts hope to take their programs to new heights, but “The Tonight Show’s” Jimmy Fallon may not have expected to have to do so on his very first night behind the desk.
As evening approached on the night of February 17, 2014, Fallon found himself hustling up elevators to get to a rooftop at NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza headquarters where U2 was set to perform. Lorne Michaels, the “SNL” executive producer who also has a hand in overseeing “Tonight,” felt the band would look best framed against the dusk, not a dark night sky. So Fallon, having just finished a bit in which celebrities like Robert De Niro and Joan Rivers paid him $100 after betting he wouldn’t get the “Tonight” job, was scrambling to get upstairs before his crew lost the light.
It wasn’t easy. One of the guests, Stephen Colbert, paid Fallon in pennies, dumping a...

Insofar as calling out disingenuous-seeming celebrities goes, Bono is pretty low-hanging fruit. But that hasn’t stopped Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters from lashing out at the U2 frontman in a recent interview, calling him an “enormous shit” for his support of Israel during the nation’s ongoing conflict with Hamas and occupation of Palestine.
The comments came in a recent discussion between Waters and Al Jazeera, in which the Pink Floyd songsmith reaffirmed his condemnation of Israel’s policy towards Palestine, and emphasized the importance of speaking out against war-mongering politics. When asked what he would say to artists who’ve remained quiet during this time, Waters turned his ire towards Bono.
“Anybody who knows Bono should go and pick him up by his ankles and shake him until he stops being an enormous shit,” Waters said, referring to a recent U2 performance at the Sphere where Bono expressed...

Taylor Swift’s historic fourth Album of the Year win
After Taylor Swift’s Album of the Year win for “Midnights,” Noah claimed she was the first person to win Album of the Year four times. That is not exactly correct — engineers Tom Coyne, Serban Ghenea, and John Hanes had won four times before “Midnights” — but Swift is indeed the first woman and first performer to win this many times, following her victories for “Fearless,” “1989” and “Folklore.” This historic win is a testament to Swift’s ability to make consistently successful albums,...

The 2024 Grammys will inspire a good deal of next-day debate among viewers. And that debate will be over: Which was the more moving comeback performance, Tracy Chapman’s or Joni Mitchell’s?
Life is good — and awards shows better than they have a right to be — when the hot post-telecast topic is which legend most tugged at our heartstrings with an unexpected return to the television spotlight. A huge reason why the 66th annual show will likely be considered the best Grammys in several years is the one-two punch of Mitchell and Chapman — the two artists the world was most eager to see come back from distressingly long sabbaticals. Exec producer Ben Winston’s success in landing both in one year provided a level of sentiment unlikely to be matched in any Grammys telecast soon, short of the producers convincing Bobbie Gentry she needs to un-retire and do the show,...

Frank Sinatra was the odds-on favorite to be the big winner at the inaugural Grammy Awards in 1959, but — perhaps as an early indicator that things wouldn’t always go to plan at the Grammys — ‘Ol Blue Eyes lost out on both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
The music industry’s most recognized awards were established in 1958 by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the United States.
The first Grammy ceremony was held on May 4, 1959, with only 28 categories, a number that since has swelled past 100 and now settled at 91. It was attended by many of music’s elite. Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Gene Autry, Johnny Mercer, Henry Mancini and André Previn gathered for a black-tie dinner and awards presentation inside the Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton.

Billy Joel took the stage to perform at the Grammy Awards for the first time in more than two decades on Sunday night.
Living up to his Piano Man nickname, he sat behind a piano to perform “Turn the Lights Back On,” his new single — and his first in decades — which was released Feb. 1. He was backed by a string orchestra as he sang the song at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
The singer closed out the show with his classic hit “You May Be Right,” following Celine Dion’s presentation of the album of year award to Taylor Swift. The lively performance featured him again behind a piano.

Travis Scott delivered a stark, aggressive performance of hit songs from his album Utopia at the 2024 Grammys Sunday night.
Standing on an ominous set, surrounded by speakers and smoke and strobe lights, the rapper performed “My Eyes,” “I Know?” and “Fe!N.” Toward the end of the medley, Scott could be seen breaking chairs and other onstage props.
Prior to his performance, Scott spoke in a video about Utopia, which was also nominated for best rap album this year.
“If you could have a feeling of utopia for one second, or one moment, or one minute, one hour, things can be calm even though everything else around you is moving at 1,000 miles per minute,” the rapper said. “And the album is just my trip trying to find that.”

Miley Cyrus had an unplanned shout-out to make during her 2024 Grammys performance Sunday night.
While performing “Flowers” during the awards show, Cyrus — who had taken the stage moments earlier when winning her first-ever Grammy for best pop solo performance — screamed out amid the lyrics, “I just won my first Grammy!”
The singer, sporting a silver sequence dress onstage, decided to forgo backup dancers and show off her own choreography while singing the hit track.
Also mid-song, Cyrus called out the audience for not singing along with her, saying, “Why you acting like you don’t know this song?” — which is a great question, given that the song went viral on social media following its release in January 2023.
Several stars in the audience, including Oprah, Taylor Swift and John Legend, proceeded to get up and sing and dance along with the singer.

Sza gave a fierce performance at the 2024 Grammys, singing some of her biggest hits.
Wearing an all-black outfit with a leather trench coat, the singer-songwriter started with a soulful performance of her song “Snooze” from her album Sos.
After, backup dancers, appearing equally fierce, proceeded to come in with swords as Sza began singing “Kill Bill.” At one point, the dancers jumped on other artist’s tables in the audience, as Janelle Monáe, Kelsea Ballerini and other stars cheered Sza on.
Right before her performance, the singer shared a few words in an intro video about what her latest album and the Grammys mean to her.
“Sos took about five years for me to finish and put out,” Sza says in the footage. “I consulted the water about every aspect of this hour. I never feel nervous in the ocean, when I’m swimming in open water. I loved the isolation,...

All eyes were on Miley Cyrus as she walked the red carpet ahead of the 2024 Grammys. She bared it all (almost) in a daring mesh dress as she posed for photos at the Crypto.com Arena on Feb. 4 in Los Angeles.
The “Flowers” singer made her big entrance in a custom metal dress by Maison Margiela. She completed her look with sky-high big hair and a pair of gold velvet high heels.
Cyrus, 31, is up for multiple awards at the 66th Annual Grammys, including Record of the Year for “Flowers” and Album of the Year for Endless Summer Vacation.

Sorry to break your soul, but Beyoncé is not performing at Sunday’s Grammy Awards.
A representative for the superstar confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter after social media has been fueled with rumors that she is set to hit the stage to honor late icon Tina Turner.
Last month, the Australian Today ahow tweeted that Beyoncé would pay tribute to Turner onstage, and since then the news has circulated on X (formerly known as Twitter), leaving many to believe it’s true. Turner died last May after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.
At the 2008 Grammys, Beyoncé and Turner gave an explosive performance of “Proud Mary.” When Turned died, Beyoncé shared a photo of herself with the legend on her website and wrote: “My beloved queen. I love you endlessly. I’m so grateful for your inspiration, and all the ways you have paved the way.

Cher didn’t release an album of Christmas songs until this year. Despite this, she performed vocals on the best Christmas song of the rock ‘n’ roll era. She revealed what it was like to revisit that career milestone.
Cher said her new album of Christmas songs doesn’t have ‘Christmas Christmas songs’
2023 saw the release of Cher’s first Christmas album, which is simply titled Christmas. During a 2023 interview with Billboard, the “I Got You Babe” singer took pride in the album. “They’re not ‘Christmas Christmas’ songs, Ok, they’re just great songs,” Cher said. “And I never say that because I almost never like what I do. But I mean people love it and I’m happy.”

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Flora and Son, John Carney’s latest indie ode to music that stars Eve Hewson in a breakout role.
Written and directed by Carney, whose credits include the song-centered Once, Begin Again and Sing Street, the film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where Apple Original Films jumped on it, scoring one of the fest’s splashiest acquisitions after an all-night bidding war. It was Apple’s biggest deal in Park City since landing eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Coda in 2021.
Flora and Son hit theaters in late September before launching on Apple TV+.
Hewson, the daughter of U2 frontman Bono, stars as a single mom in Dublin who looks to use a shared love of music to break through with her troubled teen son Max (Orén Kinlan), who is heading down the wrong side of the tracks.

U2 paid tribute to the 260 festivalgoers who were killed by Hamas in what is believed to be the worst civilian massacre in Israeli history.
While performing Sunday at the recently opened Sphere venue in Las Vegas, Bono dedicated their song “Pride (In the Name of Love)” to the young victims who were shot and killed in this weekend’s terrorist attack at the Tribe of Nova trance music festival near Kibbutz Reim in south Israel, close to the Gaza Strip.
“In the light of what’s happened in Israel and Gaza, a song about non-violence seems somewhat ridiculous, even laughable. But our prayers have always been for peace and for non-violence,” Bono told the audience. “But our hearts and our anger, you know where that’s pointed. So sing with us … and those beautiful kids at that music festival.”
Bono then changed the lyrics as he sang, “Early morning, October...

Exclusive: Rock icon Bob Geldof is collaborating on a stage musical about the global phenomenon that was Live Aid. The show, called Just For One Day, devised and directed by Luke Sheppard (& Juliet), will have its world premiere at the Old Vic Theatre in London early next year.
Live Aid was a concert like no other, organized by Geldof and fellow rock ‘n’ roller Midge Ure in July 1985 to raise funds and awareness for the famine crisis then taking place in Ethiopia.
Just For One Day will run at the Old Vic from January 26-March 30.
The UK leg of Live Aid kicked off at Wembley Stadium where the likes of Queen with frontman Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Elton John, George Michael, Sting, Sade, The Who, Paul McCartney, U2, Geldof’s the Boomtown Rats, Ure, Paul Weller and tons of others rocked and raved in the presence of thousands of spectators — including Charles and Diana,...

The opening night of Sphere in Las Vegas represented a great many things. For James Dolan and his business partners, it was an opportunity to introduce their $2 billion investment to the world. For the live music industry, it was a chance to see if giant concerts could work outside of the stadiums and arenas that have housed them going back to the days of Beatlemania. And for Las Vegas, it was a test run of a grand new attraction that should bring tourists to the city for years to come.

U2 are back with “Atomic City,” their first original new song in two years. Listen to the track below.
The Edge recently declared that he wanted U2 to lead a “resurgence of guitars” in pop music, and with “Atomic City,” he puts his money where his mouth is. The track — named after Las Vegas, where the band will soon perform a residency at the new Sphere — oscillates between staccato verses and a rollicking chorus as Bono sings, “Love is God and God is love/ And if your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.” A gospel chorus and squalling horns even make an appearance before the guitarist takes a proper solo.
U2 shot a music video for “Atomic City” in its namesake metropolis. While on set, Bono told the fans who gathered to catch the taping that the song is “a rock ‘n’ roll 45 in the tradition of ’70s post-punk,...

Marc Bolan has been pretty well served with documentaries over the years, to the point that most fans have heard numerous anecdotes about his fabled life many times over. Ethan Silverman’s Angelheaded Hipster at least brings something new to the party by framing the story around the making of a tribute album (released a couple of years back), allowing the film to focus on Bolan’s songwriting rather than the more iconoclastic, flashy or tabloidy aspects of his life and, indeed, death.
The beats of the Bolan story, after all, are pretty well known: the working class Jewish kid dragged up in post-war London, who becomes a proto-mod at 13, spends the mid sixties, alongside David Bowie, doing everything possible to become a popstar, drifting into Tokienesque hippiedom in the psychedelic era before donning glitter on his cheeks and a feather bower to kickstart the age of glam rock in...
