Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Asteroid City, Wes Anderson’s latest film that had its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Anderson penned the script with his frequent collaborator Roman Coppola after the two previously teamed on the Anderson-directed The Darjeeling Limited, Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch and Moonrise Kingdom, the latter of which scored the pair an Original Screenplay Oscar nom in 2023.
The plot is set in 1955 and revolves around the American Southwest desert town of Asteroid City (population: 87), whose famed attraction is a giant meteor crater and observatory. The one-telephone-booth town is playing host to the military and astronomers honoring five Junior Stargazers with awards for their scientific inventions. It’s also the weekend celebrating Asteroid Day, commemorating September 27, 3007 BC, when that Arid Plains meteorite made impact.

There are some fascinating names behind A24‘s dark comedy, Death of a Unicorne, beyond stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. Not only is it produced by Ari Aster, but horror master John Carpenter will compose music for the film.
In Death of a Unicorne, “A father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.”
The dark comedy marks writer/director Alex Scharfman’s directorial debut.
Award-winning filmmaker and composer John Carpenter (Halloween), Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies will compose music for the film.
The dark comedy has fantasy elements baked into the plot, but with Aster and Carpenter involved, it feels like a safe bet that Death of a Unicorne might dip further into genre territory than first glance.

Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City" will be available to stream very soon. The director, known for quirky comedies starring an endless rotation of his A-list actor friends, from Bill Murray to Tilda Swinton ("Moonrise Kingdom"), debuted his latest film in theaters in June. Now, audiences will be able to enjoy it from the comfort of their homes.
The full trailer for "Astroid City" dropped back on March 29, revealing the period comedy that takes place in a 1950s desert town about to be rocked by an otherworldly event that could change everything. The movie preview offered clues about the film's characters, with Scarlett Johansson taking on the role of a '50s-era movie star and Tom Hanks serving as the disapproving father of Jason Schwartzman's character's late wife (who dies three weeks before the movie starts). And, of course, the film features Anderson's trademark vibrant coloring and dry comedy.

Wes Anderson is among the most creative directors out there, a true auteur with a distinctive style. His films, including The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Fantasic Mr Fox, are often quirky, color-drenched, full of cultural references and even whimsical but also deeply human. While not everyone loves their unique style, he has many fans, including this writer. Anderson’s last film, The French Dispatch, was an anthology inspired by the New Yorker magazine, and while Anderson’s newest, Asteroid City, is not an anthology, it’s a story-within-a-story format evokes some of that as does its deadpan off-kilter comedy – but here with an Atomic Age slant, of 1950s candy colors,...

Focus Features’ press conference for Asteroid City began with writer/director Wes Anderson describing the inspiration for his most recent weirdly wonderful film. Asteroid City is one of the most Wes Anderson-ish of all Wes Anderson films, ranking right up there with The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom, and Anderson admitted that no one has specifically asked him where the idea came from.
Joining 10 of his film’s stars – Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody, Rupert Friend, Stephen Park, Hope Davis, Bryan Cranston, and Maya Hawke – for the virtual conference, Anderson revealed that he normally starts writing a script with a couple of ideas.
”I would say this one the three ideas were, one, Roman Coppola and I created this thing together. We wanted to write a part for Jason Schwartzman at the center of a movie that would be something he hadn’t done before.

The internet of 2023 has transformed Wes Anderson from director to design aesthetic through countless generative AI videos and an enduring TikTok trend mimicking his distinct visual style. To watch Anderson’s actual output in Asteroid City is to realize that boiling him down into snackable social media content cannot fully capture his magic. From the whimsical wonder and meticulous mise-en-scène, there’s no replacement for the real thing.
Asteroid City depicts a theater company staging a teleplay at a 1955 Junior Stargazer convention in the titular desert town. For Anderson, the premise is a springboard for crafting frames within frames, which he then proceeds to summarily collapse. The film upholds and undermines his signature all at once. Yet all these crisp compositions also need a committed cast of actors placed within them, delivering his droll dialogue with amusing affect. Most members of Anderson’s assembled troupe are playing actors who are also playing their characters,...

There’s a scene early in Robert Schwartzman’s The Good Half that encapsulates why the film, despite its good intentions, struggles to work. Renn (Nick Jonas), a 28-year-old writer based in Los Angeles, has returned to Cleveland for his mother’s funeral. He’s standing in the kitchen of his father’s home (his parents were divorced) when his dad, Darren, (Matt Walsh) stumbles upon him looking for a drink. They pour each other some tequila and get down to the awkward business of confronting their emotions.
Darren is the kind of father who runs to the internet for answers. He’s searched the web for tips on how to console loved ones in the wake of a loss and repeats the generic lessons verbatim. “I feel like I’m failing you,” Darren says when he realizes the clichés aren’t helping his son. “I feel like I should be quoting Thoreau.

The stars always come out for Wes Anderson, and so it was at the Cannes press conference for Asteroid City, which featured enough boldface names to fill a bus, much like the one the cast of the film used to arrive at the red carpet premiere of the film in Cannes on Tuesday night.
Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Bryan Cranston, Stephen Park, Maya Hawke, Rupert Friend and Jeffrey Wright sat alongside Anderson on a crowded platform to answer questions about the 1950s-set film, in which a group of precocious kids geniuses and their dysfunctional parents visit a tiny desert town for a stargazer convention, only to have a close encounter of the third kind with a spindly stop-motion extraterrestrial.
Befitting the film, which is heavy on style and whimsy but, according to most critics, lacks much narrative depth, Anderson and the cast kept it light, while still providing some insight...

Wes Anderson’s 1950s-set “Asteroid City” takes place in a fictional desert town as a cosmic event disrupts the annual Junior Stargazer convention. But does the filmmaker actually believe in extraterrestrial life?
“Well, you know… I wouldn’t rely on my opinions about that in any significant way,” Anderson said to laughter at Wednesday’s Cannes press conference for the film. “The research that went into this, as extensive as it was, it wasn’t anything you’d find in academia.”
“Stephen Hawking insists it is numerically improbable that there would not be extraterrestrial life,” he continued, adding sheepishly, “I don’t really.”
Anderson, who wrote the film with Roman Coppola, was joined at Wednesday’s press conference by Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Maya Hawke, Bryan Cranston, Stephen Park, Jeffrey Wright and Rupert Friend. Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” is out of this world.
The first look at the stylized universe behind the fictional city has Wes Anderson fans already desperate for more of the auteur’s signature symmetry and tableaux-inspired shot design. The trailer for the film gives a sneak peek at the lush desert landscapes and beige-toned themes of “Asteroid City,” which filmed in Spain.
The film is set to debut in theaters June 16 from Focus Features before a wide release June 23. This marks the first collaboration between Focus and Anderson since the Oscar-nominated 2012 coming-of-age story “Moonrise Kingdom,” the style of which has set the tone for his movies ever since like “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Isle of Dogs,” and last year’s “The French Dispatch” — all distributed by Searchlight.

Filmmaker Wes Anderson will point his telescope toward outer space this summer with his new film, Asteroid City. In a trailer for the movie, due out June 16, a father’s car breaks down somewhere in the desert where he’s taking his kids for “Asteroid Day” in 1955. From there, things get (surprise!) really quirky as people start questioning the existence of aliens, hover above the ground in jetpacks, and offer to show each other their nude scenes.

The first trailer for Wes Anderson_, the vibe was Truffaut, Godard and Monsieur Hulot; this time it’s kitschy ’50s Americana, complete with desert diners, nuclear tests and eye-popping ice cream pastel colours everywhere. Check out the trailer here:
Jason Schwartzman. As they get closer, it turns out that something else is getting closer too: an extra-terrestrial with news of the universe to impart. “What’s out there?” asks one character. “The meaning of life. Maybe there is one!”
And, in the most Andersonian touch, the cast is absolutely absurd. You’ve got your Anderson favourites who’ve been there or thereabouts for the last 25 years: Jason Schwartzmann, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Edward Norton, Jeffrey Wright, Stephen Park and Jeff Goldblum. Then there are first-time live action Andersonites Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Cranston, and Liev Schreiber, who voiced characters in the Anderson’s second stop-motion feature Isle Of Dogs.

Set for a June release from Focus Features and tipped to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, its first trailer has arrived.
