Disney+ is not proceeding with a second season of Disney Branded Television/20th Television’s action fantasy series American Born Chinese, which stars Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh.
The decision comes more than seven months after the eight-episode first season was released May 24. It also comes after the options on the cast expired yesterday, I hear. 20th Television still plans to shop the series elsewhere.
Created by Kelvin Yu based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel, American Born Chinese had an impeccable timing, launching on the heels of the 2023 awards season that saw Yeoh and Quan win trophy after trophy for their movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, culminating with both of them landing Oscars in March.
Despite featuring Hollywood’s “it” duo of the moment in Yeoh and Quan and garnering strong reviews, American Born Chinese could not attract a large enough audience and did...

Chinese studio Bona Film Group has struck a deal with U.S. financier Tsg Entertainment Finance to invest in a slate of upcoming Hollywood franchise movies. The deal is understood to include upcoming “Avatar” and “Deadpool” titles.
The agreement, signed on Dec. 31, is described as an extension and expansion of a relationship between Bona and Tsg that began in 2015. The financial terms were not disclosed.
Through the earlier deal Bona committed to providing $235 million to co-invest with Tsg in a slate of films including “The Martian,” “Independence Day: Resurgence,” “The Greatest Showman,” “War for the Planet of the Apes,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “Alien: Covenant” and “X-Men: Apocalypse,” most of which were distributed through 20th Century Fox.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains some spoilers for “May December.”]
There’s one word to describe the past few months in rising star Elizabeth Yu’s acting career: “wild.” Spend a little time with the “May December” breakout on the phone, and she’ll invoke the term for everything from the response to the Todd Haynes film to her rapid-fire casting process to her first day on set, which literally saw her smack in between two acting legends in a scene that’s a strong contender for sequence of the year. Wild.
And she’s not wrong. While “May December,” in which Yu plays Mary Atherton-Yoo, one of three children belonging to embattled couple Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Julianne Moore) and Joe Yoo (Charles Melton), is only Yu’s second film role (the first was in Ray Romano’s 2022 effort “Somewhere in Queens”), she more than holds her own in the lauded feature.

Netflix is dropping great K-dramas like leaves falling in autumn. Just a little while ago, we got to see Doona, starring Bae Suzy and Yang Se-Jong, which mesmerized viewers with its stunning style and sweet story. November has kicked off with yet another fantastic K-drama, but this one is a little on the darker side. Now, the title is Daily Dose of Sunshine, but this show is rather draining and quite bleak until the end. Still, it tackles mental illness, something that has become prevalent in Korean dramas in the past few years. Daily Dose of Sunshine reflects on mental health in a country where the work culture is solely based on hierarchy. We learned in Revenant that Korea has the highest rate of suicides among Oecd countries. While sometimes Daily Dose of Sunshine comes across as overly dramatic, it sends a very clear message to those who may need help,...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Quiz Lady,” now streaming on Hulu.
The premise of Jessica Yu’s “Quiz Lady” seems like the perfect recipe for an over-the-top, slapstick comedy: two estranged sisters — the uptight Anne (Awkwafina) and the unhinged Jenny (Sandra Oh) — embark on a cross-country roadtrip to cover their mother’s gambling debt. And there are plenty of moments throughout the film that live up to that absurdly hilarious premise, such as Anne tripping on Jenny’s pills while trying to answer quiz questions as Harry Styles’ “Watermelon Sugar” plays.
But Yu knew there was more to the story than just those laugh-out-loud scenes. Throughout the film, there are touching moments delving into the bond the sisters share. The most emotional of which comes at the end of the film. After teaming up to compete in the charades segment of a quiz show hosted by Will Ferrell’s Alex Trebek-like character,...

So, how accurate are some of those old sayings? Well, in the case of “You can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family”, well…yes, 100 percent. That’s especially true with siblings, going all the way back to Cain and Abel. Sure brothers battle, but is that ditto for sisters? This weekend’s new comedy uses that as its “springboard”. These two ladies couldn’t be more different or argumentative, Fortunately, they’re both hilarious, and their characters are played by two talented actresses. You see, the elder is a party gal while the other is saddled with the title Quiz Lady.
We first meet the aforementioned Qz as a timid eight-year-old indulging in her favorite weekday activity, watching the live TV show “Can’t Stop the Quiz” hosted by true hero Terry McTeer (Will Ferrell). And she pretty much aces all the questions despite her older...

When hearing the logline for Hulu’s new movie “Quiz Lady” — a wild sister prods her shy sibling into appearing on a quiz show to pay off debts — one could be forgiven for assuming that Sandra Oh plays the more together Jenny and Awkwafina the one getting into shenanigans. But one of the delights of the Jessica Yu-helmed comedy is watching these two actresses play atypical roles. It’s Oh who roars into town and Awkwafina who has to be forced off her couch and away from her stockpile of popcorn. And the fun they’re having is contagious.
“Sandra’s character is entirely inappropriate and self-serving and kind of stuck in the past,” Yu told IndieWire. “But she’s not fully accepting that. [Sandra and I] talked about what was the period in Jenny’s growing up that she can’t let go of, and we decided it was kind of like,...

Chances are, you know someone like “Quiz Lady” Anne Yum. As played by Awkwafina, this socially awkward young woman works a boring Cpa job by day, doing her best to blend in with the gray walls of her cubicle. But every evening at the same hour, Anne tunes in to her favorite game show and becomes a star — even if her flatulent old pug, Mr. Linguini, is the only witness — as she answers every question quickly and correctly.
The kind of comedy perfectly suited to the comfort of one’s own couch, Jessica Yu’s “Quiz Lady” is the story of how, with the help of her outrageously extroverted older sister, Jenny (Sandra Oh), Anne overcomes her anxiety and agrees to appear as a contestant on “Can’t Stop the Quiz.” So what if she trips up in front of idol/host Terry McTeer (Will Ferrell) when she finally reaches...

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Hulu releases the film on its streaming platform on Friday, November 3.
The 17-year gap between Awkwafina and Sandra Oh doesn’t do much to hinder their believability as siblings in the straight-down-the-middle comedy “Quiz Lady,” in part because that was never the point. The against-type casting wants to be appreciated for subverting the obvious placement, an inside joke opened to all viewers familiar with Oh’s résumé of chronic high achievers and Awkwafina’s affinity for slackers with an affinity for the chronic.
As screwup big sis and whirlwind of chaos Jenny, Oh rocks the big pants and language about “manifesting” borrowed from girls a little less than half her age, while Awkwafina has the wardrobe, daily routine, and life’s-been-lived defeatism of a “98-year-old spinster” as the junior yet far more mature Anne. Sets for a TV series do yeoman’s work in setting tone and mood — but they’re also lived in and familiar after a few episodes. The sets for a sketch comedy series? Those have to hit every mark immediately before the show jumps to the next set-up and location.
On “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” it was the job of production designers Michele Yu and Cindy Chao to create settings that spotlighted the heightened comedy or contributed to ridiculous(ly funny) worlds in themselves — and to do it about 40 times a season.
The number of sketches that Yu and Chao worked on during Season 4 of the Robin Thede-led HBO comedy was actually higher; about 10 sketches get cut over the course of production each season. What stayed in was as wide-ranging as an ancient desert town, a Victorian mansion, a church that could double as a basketball court, a high-end hotel,...

New Delhi, Aug 20 (Ians) India won two more gold medals, a bronze and a fifth Paris 2024 Olympics quota place in what was a profitable Sunday at the Issf World Championship All Events in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Akhil Sheoran was the toast of the day when he won bronze in the Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions (3P) as well as picking up a Paris quota- India’s second in the event after Swapnil Kusale had won the first at the Cairo Worlds last year. Austrian Alexander Schmril won gold while Cezch Petr Nymbursky won silver. Rhythm Sangwan also shot brilliantly on the day to make the 25m Pistol Women final but finished eighth to agonisingly miss out on a Paris quota.
Thanks to their efforts India are now clear and sole second on the medal tally with three gold and three silvers. China lead with seven golds and a total of 13 medals till now.

Ronnie Yu's 2003 film "Freddy vs. Jason" -- simultaneously the eighth film in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series and the eleventh film in the "Friday the 13th" series -- finally brought together two of the most popular characters of the 1980s slasher boom and had them wail on each other in a series of supernatural monster fights. Most slasher fans would have appreciated a "Freddy vs. Jason" film about a decade earlier, but there was still magic in the air in 2003; Yu's film made over $116 million on a $30 million budget.
It also, in a very utilitarian way, gave audiences exactly what they wanted. There was a decent-enough retinue of teenage victims to slaughter (led by actress Monica Keena). The story hung together juuuust well enough. And the final fights between Freddy (Robert Englund) and Jason (Ken Kirzinger) addressed any late-night, heavily intoxicated concerns horror fanboys might have posited.

‘Freddy vs. Jason’ 20 Years Later – The Ultimate Horror Battle Still Satisfies After All These Years
I was somewhat of a late bloomer when it came to my exposure to horror. I lacked the cool older relative or friend that seems to serve as a customary gateway for many genre fans. I had seen a few horror movies growing up (Child’s Play and Scream each terrified me at different points in my youth), but seeing Freddy vs. Jason at the tender age of 15 is single-handedly responsible for the horror fandom that has consumed my life ever since. Without the movie — which hit theaters 20 years ago today — I very likely wouldn’t be writing for Bloody Disgusting now.
I knew of Freddy and Jason through pop culture osmosis, but I hadn’t seen any of the combined 17 films that comprised the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises when Freddy vs. Jason piqued my interest. Even with the advent of Netflix’s DVDs by mail,...

You didn't have to be a horror aficionado to appreciate the enormity of "Freddy vs. Jason" in 2003. This was two of the titans of the slasher genre finally going head-to-head in a bloody free-for-all. Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees had slashed, stabbed, and otherwise punctured our collective pop cultural consciousness for years by then. As a young kid who had yet to see any of the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" or "Friday the 13th" films, even I knew exactly what was being referenced the first time I saw the scene in "Christmas Vacation" where Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) dons a hockey mask while taking a chainsaw to his gigantic Christmas tree.
Crossover films of this ilk have largely gone the way of the dodo since "Freddy vs. Jason" came out. We're now 80 years removed from Frankenstein's monster meeting the Wolf Man for the first time in Universal's Og Dark Universe,...

Taylor Russell, Ewan McGregor Title ‘Mother, Couch!’ to Bow at San Sebastian’s New Directors Sidebar
Starring “Bones and All’s” Taylor Russell, Ewan McGregor and Ellen Burstyn, “Mother, Couch!” the feature debut of Sweden’s Niclas Larsson, features in a currently 11-title lineup of San Sebastian’s 2023 New Directors section, the most important sidebar at the highest-profile movie event in the Spanish-speaking world.
Notable in Trey Edward Shults’ raved-reviewed debut “Waves,” Russell stars in “Mother, Couch,” billed as dark dramedy that, produced by Lyrical Media and Suris/Bishop Films, has largely flown under the radar. The chef co-owners of Hollywood hotspot Horses are escalating their battle for control of the restaurant, with Will Aghajanian taking his wife Elizabeth Johnson to court.
Aghajanian alleges in a complaint filed on Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court that Johnson is trying to oust him from their business after she cut him out of a Chinese restaurant they planned to open behind Horses, in part, by lying about animal abuse and assault allegations.
The suit was filed after a Los Angeles Superior Court judge in May extended Johnson’s temporary restraining order against Aghajanian until June. He filed in January to divorce her, denying the allegations and saying he’s the victim of Johnson’s “long-term abuse that has occurred through our relationship.”

TikTok‘s effort to stave off a U.S. ban has suffered yet another setback. A former employee of TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has filed a lawsuit in the California Superior Court for San Francisco County. Among other allegations, the suit claims that representatives from the Chinese Communist Party accessed the user data of U.S. TikTok users.
The ex-ByteDance operative, Yintao “Roger” Yu, worked for the Beijing-based corporation between 2017 and 2018. In his original complaint, filed earlier this month, he claimed that he was fired because he would not comply with his employer’s “efforts to skirt legal and ethical lines.”
Yu’s original lawsuit alleges that TikTok ran a “worldwide scheme” in which employees cribbed videos from Instagram and Snapchat in order to create a library of short-form content. It also claims that ByteDance used TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin to run propaganda campaigns against Japan and Hong Kong.
