Upcoming directing and producing projects are expanding Toni Collette’s creative horizons, according to the Australian actress speaking at Qumra this weekend.
She will soon star in A French Pursuit, a comedy feature directed by Catherine Hardwicke. Collette will produce the film through her Vocab Films company, alongside UK producer Christopher Simon’s New Sparta Films.
“Meeting the production team we’re working with in France, casting people – it’s stuff you don’t get to do as an actor, it’s incredibly satisfying,” said Collette, speaking in Doha where she gave a masterclass to emerging filmmakers and attending industry...

Exclusive: The Love List has released its inaugural list highlighting the best 14 unproduced romance-centered screenplays and pilots of the year just in time for Valentine’s Day.
The list was read and curated by a group of anonymous readers, in addition to writer Lindsay Grossman and Olive Bridge TV exec Madison Jones, who launched the Love List last month.

Grossman added, “Our hope is that these projects will be read by the industry at large and that they will ultimately be sold and produced. Coming out of a pandemic, and then a double-strike, we know there’s a need for stories that inspire and touch our hearts,...

The above summary describes the real life experience of Denise Huskins as recounted in Netflix’s latest docuseries, American Nightmare. In 2015, Huskins and her boyfriend Aaron Quinn were attacked and drugged in their home by an intruder. Unfortunately even her talents cannot save perfunctory tale of a discontented American woman who inherits an Italian crime family
Not even the fierce wattage of Toni Collette’s talent can light up this hokey crime comedy, a kind of wacky mobster spin on the idea of the unhappy American woman finding herself and learning to love again in a luxury Euro-tourist paradise; Mafia Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, perhaps. It’s directed by Catherine Hardwicke from a story idea by French author and film-maker Amanda Sthers, who gave us Madame – another film into which Collette tried valiantly but unsuccessfully to breathe some life.
Here she plays Kristin, an empty-nester whose son has just gone away to college; she is bored and unfulfilled by her job as a big pharma PR, and her husband turns out to be a cheating slimeball. Then she receives news that her Italian grandfather has...

Toni Collette is an Oscar-nominated actress who has become a favorite of both the art house and mainstream crowd, ably hopping back-and-forth between small scale indie fare and big budget crowdpleasers. Let’s take a look back at 12 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1972 in Sydney, Australia, Collette came to the attentions of American audiences with a star-making turn in “Muriel’s Wedding” (1995), which brought her a Golden Globe nomination as Best Comedy/Musical Actress. She reaped her first Oscar bid in Best Supporting Actress just four years later for “The Sixth Sense” (1999), a supernatural horror flick that scared up massive box office receipts and critical acclaim.
In addition to her Oscar success, Collette earned Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006), for which she won the SAG Awards prize for top ensemble. She contended once more at BAFTA for “About a Boy” (2002) and again...

Robert Pattinson first made his sci-fi debut in Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" back in 2020, but he hasn't dipped back into the genre since. Bong Joon-ho generated a lot of buzz with his 2019 psychological thriller "Parasite," which swept the Oscars, but has since been quiet. As it turns out, the duo are teaming up on a brand new sci-fi film, "Mickey 17," that's slated to premiere next spring.
"Mickey 17" is a literary adaptation, but Bong Joon-ho is known for taking adaptations off the rails, so there's no telling what he has in store. However, one thing is for sure — the filmmaker will be stepping outside of his comfort zone for this project. The cast features lots of American movie stars, a rarity for Bong, who has worked with primarily Korean casts in most of his films (with notable exceptions like "Snowpiercer" and "Okja"). This promises to be an exciting release,...

Move over, "Jury Duty," there's another twist-filled jury story in town. This time it's "Juror No. 2," the upcoming movie from veteran filmmaker Clint Eastwood. Eastwood is in his 90s now, but age hasn't stopped the prolific actor-turned-filmmaker from working on new stories to bring to the silver screen. Though the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike means "Juror No. 2" has currently suspended filming, the Eastwood picture is still in the works -- and it sounds like it has the potential to be one of the most riveting movies he's made in a while.
When it comes to Eastwood the director, your mileage may vary. The nonagenarian star has certainly made some fantastic projects in his impressive lifetime, from Oscar winners "Unforgiven" and "Million Dollar Baby" to "Mystic River" and "The Bridges of Madison County." His most recent projects, though, including 2021's "Cry Macho" and "Richard Jewell," weren't wholeheartedly embraced by critics and audiences.

The film industry is always looking for the next visionary director who can push the boundaries of storytelling and evoke visceral reactions from audiences. In recent years, Ari Aster has emerged as a director demonstrating a rare gift for crafting unsettling psychological thrillers that linger in the mind long after the closing credits. His debut feature film Hereditary introduced Aster’s signature style of slow-burning tension, family dysfunction, and supernatural dread. His follow-up Midsommar further cemented his status as an innovative director with a keen understanding of human frailty and man’s capacity for darkness. While his films are not for the faint of heart, for those seeking an unflinching exploration of grief, relationships, and the human psyche, the disturbing genius of Ari Aster awaits.

Of course, there have been female lead characters in DreamWorks animated pictures, “but this is the first time where we said the story really is hers,” adds co-director Faryn Pearl (Trolls World Tour). “We changed the title from The Gillmans to Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken because it felt that we really wanted to celebrate that it’s her story, it’s her journey. Wednesday night’s “Jeopardy!” contained 23 triple stumpers, meaning none of the three contestants guessed at all, making the Coryat, or final score, the lowest this season.

Here’s how “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Bridgerton” creator Shonda Rhimes thinks about sex scenes: carefully.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly in support of her just-launched Netflix series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” the doyen of steamy TV expounded on her philosophy for writing sexy sequences, telling the outlet she really doesn’t “write them any differently,” no matter if they are for broadcast or streaming TV. “I really don’t. I’m kind of a prude,” she said. “So, what I write into the scenes is what I want the audience to get in terms of the character emotion or the character story that’s playing out. I basically write like, ‘This is how we want them to feel.'”
And she’s found plenty of key assistance along the way, including the use of intimacy coordinators on set, of which Rhimes is a major fan. “I’m...

Mafia Mamma is a film directed by Catherine Hardwicke starring the “almost” always great Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci, and this time, as great and wonderful as they are, they don’t manage to save a comedy with jokes that don’t end up being funny.
Bad start for a comedy, don’t you think?
Mafia Mamma Movie Review
Mafia Mamma is a parody crime thriller that without wanting to go anywhere and aware of this circumstance, limits itself to overflow with clichés (it was obvious), to drop more or less funny jokes and that relies on the two stars’ performances (especially Toni Collette’s) to save the movie from sinking.
And no matter how great he or she could be, no actor can save a bad script nor, dare we say, a bad editing at the level of rhythm. Thus, Mafia Mamma is sometimes placed in almost separate scenes without a common nexus that,...

Defying those who think you should slow down and take it easy once you pass 90, the 92-year-old Clint Eastwood is busy putting the pieces together for his next — and potentially final — film, Juror #2. The actor/director has Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette in talks to star.
Written by Jonathan Abrams, Juror #2 will follow a member of the jury of a murder trial who suspects he may have had some part in the victim’s death –– in fact, possibly killed them himself in a vehicular accident –– and is caught in a moral conundrum of whether to use his secret to sway the jury away and protect himself or turn himself in to the justice system he is participating in. Hoult will be playing the lead role of the juror, with Collette as the district attorney on the case.

Universal and Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a bona fide blockbuster.
The Nintendo video game adaptation is now on course to gross $80 million in its second weekend of play at the domestic box office from 4,371 theaters, notably more than expected and representing a drop of just 45 percent. By the end of Sunday, the PG pic will sit at a projected $340.8 million domestically and $318.6 million overseas for a jaw-dropping global tally of $659.4 million.
The animated sensation smashed numerous records in its launch over the long Easter holiday. And by mid-week, Mario zoomed past Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to rank as the top-grossing movie of the year to date at the domestic, international and worldwide box office. It’s also now the No. 1 video game adaptation of all time after passing up Warcraft ($439.4 million) and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu ($449.8 million).

When Toni Collette read the script for “Mafia Mama,” her reaction was swift and enthusiastic: “Oh yeah! I gotta do this one!”
It’s no big surprise as to why the Oscar-nominated actress thought that. The story follows an Italian woman with low self-esteem, who is overlooked and mistreated by misogynistic men in her life – from her cheating husband to the cavalcade of chauvinists at work – but gets her life on track when she becomes a mafia “godmother.” The movie has it all — it’s fast-paced action, it’s laugh-out-loud funny and it’s brutally violent in places. The gruesome moments are such an antithesis to the funny ones that those extremes become that much more powerful.
“Oh my God. It’s such an uplifting, feel-good, empowering, unusual, very unique, hilarious romp,” Collette told TheWrap, adding that the film is “wet your pants funny.”

Before Clint Eastwood sunsets his career as a director, he’s prepping a last hoorah at Warner Bros to go out with a bang. Clint Eastwood was already a notable movie star before directing his first film, "Play Misty for Me" in 1971. In 2021, Eastwood helmed his 40th film as a director, the gentle rescue movie "Cry Macho," in which he also starred. Eastwood would be a Hollywood legend even if he had never chosen to get into acting. Perhaps dismaying to the man's many fans, Eastwood recently announced that he will direct one final film before retiring for good. Eastwood's final film will be distributed by Warner Bros., the studio that has handled the director's entire filmography since "Gran Torino" in 2008. Eastwood's retirement is likely due to his age — he will be 93 in May — although one might hear the words of Warner Bros./Discovery CEO David Zaslav ringing in their ears when he was reported to say that he owes no filmmaker any favors and that Eastwood's films all tend to lose money.

Nicholas Hoult was once set to star alongside Tom Cruise in an installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, and the actor is now sharing why he had to drop out of the film.
In an interview with The Guardian published Friday, the actor reveals more about the scheduling conflicts that prevented him from starring in the film. Hoult was reported in 2020 to be cast as a villain in Mission: Impossible 7. At the time, director Christopher McQuarrie teased Hoult joining the franchise by writing on Instagram, “care to raise a little hell?” to which Hoult responded, “Though why stop at a little?”
However, Hoult’s role in Hulu’s The Great prevented him from being available to join the Mission: Impossible film. Dropping out of the role seemed to follow a chain of events in which the actor lost on out on other big roles.
“I screen-tested for Batman and didn’t get it.

Clint Eastwood is turning 93 this year, but the four-time Oscar winner isn’t slowing down. The “Unforgiven” and “Million Dollar Baby” director has set his 40th feature film, “Juror #2,” IndieWire has confirmed.
Warner Bros., which has distributed all of Eastwood’s films since 2008’s “Gran Torino,” will re-team with the director for the thriller, a source confirmed to IndieWire. In addition, a source confirmed that offers have been sent to Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette to star in the picture, though neither deal is final.
Set in the courtroom of a murder trial, “Juror #2” focuses on one of the jurors as he realizes during the case that he killed the victim in a driving accident, and desperately attempts to get the defendant off without going to jail himself. Deadline reports that should they be cast, Hoult would play the juror, while Collette will play prosecuting attorney in the trial.

For filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke‘s latest feature, she went for the funny. Mafia Momma offers a solid collection of talented performers including Toni Collette, Monica Bellucci, and Sophia Nomvete, for a little R-rated comedy. The story involves Kristin, a woman who finds that her grandfather was a major player in the mafia. After he is killed, she is unexpectedly invited to his funeral, and suddenly finds herself on a wild adventure. Based on a story by Amanda Sthers, the screenplay was written by J. Michael Feldman and Debbie Jhoon.
Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci are absolute class. And yes, it’s a thrill speaking to the two. As well, Toni Collette and Sophia Nomvete were utterly hilarious to chat with. The two opened up about the dark comedy, and their chemistry was wonderful even off-screen in an interview. We also spoke with Catherine Hardwicke and Monica Bellucci about taking on this particular tale.

Watching Mafia Mamma, a slapstick farce about a middle-aged American woman who abruptly inherits an Italian mob empire, you can imagine its star, Toni Collette, in an episode of The Sopranos. She’s got Carmela‘s icy-blonde look and, by the end of the movie, commands a room like Tony. But here, it’s all in the service of an unabashedly screwball story — and Collette shines with an all-out silliness you’ve never seen before.
“I literally had the time of my life!” Collette tells Rolling Stone of Mafia Mamma.

Plot: Follows an insecure American woman who unexpectedly inherits her grandfather’s mafia empire in Italy. Guided by the firm’s trusted consigliere, she hilariously defies everyone’s expectations, including her own, as the new head of the family business.

Ben Affleck’s Air is another holdover to watch. The adult-skewing movie, which kicks off Amazon’s foray into the traditional theatrical business, opened to a better-than-expected $20.2 million over the Easter holiday and hopes to do $8.5 million or more this weekend.
Among the five new nationwide titles,...

Mafia Mamma coulda been a contender, a sharp idea to throw an unsuspecting wife, mother and frustrated businesswoman into a new life as the head of an Italian crime family. Instead, though blessed to have the wonderful Toni Collette in the title role, it becomes a pasta with too many ingredients. This is not to say general audiences won’t be pleased, but this is a movie that feels like we have seen it too many times before. You certainly will have a few laughs, admire the Roman scenery and root for Collette’s success, but it is pretty mild when it should have been wickedly smart with this kind of premise. Married to the Mob it is not.

You never want bad films to happen to great actors, but every once in a while one of your favorites inevitably turns up in an unfortunate and miscalculated clunker. Sadly, Catherine Hardwicke’s “Mafia Mamma” is that movie for Toni Collette. While she is one of the most fearless and versatile actors working today, Collette looks somewhat lost here as the story’s accidental crime boss on a quest to, well, “Eat Pray F*ck” (as one character in the film so elegantly puts it).
Despite having directed a fiercely diverse slate of genre-spanning blockbusters and indies across TV and the big screen—she’s done everything from “Thirteen,” to “Twilight” and “Miss Bala”— even Hardwicke seems a little bewildered in a script jointly penned by Michael J. Feldman and Debbie Jhoon, based on an original story by Amanda Sthers.

Though “The Godfather” is referenced a few times in “Mafia Mamma,” a fluffy comedy starring Toni Collette as a reluctant mob boss, the lack of direct quotes seems like a missed opportunity. There’s no “make her an offer she can’t refuse” joke, for instance, the moment American mom Kristin (Collette) is strong-armed into inheriting one of Italy’s most powerful crime families. And while Kristin’s arc perfectly matches the sentiment of “great men are not born great, they grow great,” this slam dunk was passed up for a more generalized approach.
The frivolous slapstick and unique premise of “Mafia Mamma” has much more in common with “Analyze This” than it does “The Godfather,” though the execution is not as clever. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (“Thirteen”) from a script by J. Michael Feldman and Debbie Jhoon with story credit to Amanda Sthers, “Mafia Mamma” tried to fit a...

In her own home, Italian American working mom Kristin Balbano Jordan (Toni Collette) is hardly the boss. When her deadbeat hubby isn’t cheating on her, he calls the shots, and her independent-minded son can’t wait to leave for college. At work, her male colleagues undermine her every idea. What Kristin doesn’t realize is that it’s not her destiny to be a doormat. Far from it. Come to find, she’s next in line to run Italy’s well-connected Balbano clan, and though Kristin couldn’t have imagined she was heir to an organized crime family, taking charge amounts to an offer she can’t refuse.
A fun fish-out-of-water farce with “Godfather” DNA and a clever female-empowerment kick, “Mafia Mamma” makes inspired use of Collette, who’s never better than when playing women we oughtn’t to have underestimated. Here, using stiletto heels to brutally stab a rival clan’s top assassin,...
