The status of Kenya Barris’ future with Disney-ABC is still uncertain but we know for sure that the Black-ish executive producer will not be going to trial over the Emmy nominated sitcom.
With a June 11 start date set for the courtroom drama, Barris and his former writing partner Bryan Barber have reached a settlement in the one and half year-old dispute. “This entire case is settled,” said documents filed in La Superior Court late last month by the Barber’s attorney Kenneth Ingber. “A request for dismissal will be filed within 45 days after the settlement,” the short notice of May 23 added (read it here).
No details of the confidential settlement were disclosed in the filing but Deadline has learned that all sides were indeed eager to see the matter concluded. This occurred a week after the Black-ish Season 4 finale aired and as Barris’ contract talks with ABC Studios continue.

A lawsuit claiming that “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris stole the idea for the show from a former writing partner appears headed to trial, after a judge refused to dismiss it on Thursday.
Bryan Barber contends that he and Barris had an agreement in 2006 to develop a show for VH1 about a successful black TV writer working in a largely white environment. Barber, a music video director, contends that several years later, Barris developed the idea into “Black-ish,” violating their agreement to produce the show together. Barber filed suit in 2016, seeking writing credit and compensation.
Barris’ attorneys sought to have the suit thrown out, but Judge Samantha Jessner issued a tentative ruling on Thursday denying their motion. In her ruling, Jessner noted several similarities between the scripts for the two shows. For instance, in both shows, the main character works in a media company’s “urban department,” and both shows feature jokes about grape soda.

Kenya Barris could be headed to trial this spring over whether he essentially gave up the right to base works like Black-ish on his own life experiences when he created an unproduced pilot with a friend from college.

There’s no doubt that competition to land the big directing jobs in Hollywood is fierce in this economy. Director Bryan Barber (Idlewild) has decided to take a more proactive approach and is now bringing a project that fits right into the context of Transformers and Real Steel to the studios.
Deadline reports that Barber wants to bring Gigantor, the 1960’s Japanese cartoon import, back to the silver screen for new generations of children to enjoy. Barber grew up watching Gigantor and tracked down the rights to Fred Ladd, an 86-year old voice-over artist. After a long courtship with Ladd, a detailed storyboard presentation sold the project to Ladd. Barber now controls the movie, merchandise and videogame rights to Gigantor and will, of course, direct the film.
Barber describes his Gigantor to be “Transformers meets Goonies:”

Remember Idlewild? Released back in 2006, the Prohibition-era musical starred OutKast members Andre "Andre 3000" Benjamin and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton. While the flick generated some buzz, it didn't review terribly well and made little more than a whimper at the box office. That was bad news for writer/director Bryan Barber, who made his feature debut with Idlewild. After being disappointed about the direction of his career in the intervening years, Deadline reports that Barber is taking things into his own hands by acquiring the rights to a potentially film-friendly property: the 1960s cartoon Gigantor. Gigantor was the American adaptation of the Japanese anime series Tetsujin 28-go. It tells the story of a young boy who controls a giant, flying combat robot named -- you guessed it -- Gigantor. How did a tween get his hands on the remote control for a giant, flying combat robot, you might ask. Gigantor was...

The power of Gigantor is in Bryan Barber‘s hand. The music video and Idlewild director grew tired of being passed over for bigger budget gigs, so he decided to buy the rights (including toys and video games) for a movie-ready concept that, according to Deadline Toyama, he’s describing as Transformers meets The Goonies. That’s some solid math right there. The project he’s picked is Gigantor – the Americanized anime version of Tetsujin 28-go – which features an incredibly large robot controlled by a 12-year-old boy by remote. The television show was on in the 60s, around the same time as Speed Racer, and it saw a mild resurgence in the 90s. This is a shrewd move by Barber who clearly wants to take control of his own directorial destiny. It’s unclear whether the gambit will work (as it depends on a studio or financier believing first in the project and second in Barber as...

Developing Sizzle Reel Take To Studios To Pitch The Project If Hollywood won't let you make your tentpoles, come to them with one of your own. This is the logic fueling director Bryan Barber's desire to make "Gigantor," an adaptation of a popular Japanese cartoon from the sixties that had fallen into semi-obscurity despite everyone's love of giant robots. Barber, who has struggled to get a movie made after his debut film, the OutKast-driven "Idlewild" went nowhere, has taken the initiative in tracking down the rights to the character. Turns out, they belonged to an 86-year-old voiceover artist named Fred…...

Director Bryan Barber has taken control of his own destiny with next project in Gigantor. Deadline reports that the video director-turned film director of 2006's Idlewild has secured movie, merchandise and video game rights to the family-friendly film about the giant flying robot. The deal came together after courting the 86-year old voiceover artist who controlled the rights. With all the Transformers news this week and the very likely Real Steel sequel on the horizon this project sounds good to me. The story focuses on "a 12-year old boy who ends up with the controls to the giant weaponized world-saving robot."

The wait is finally over as Adam Lambert's highly-anticipated music video for his single "If I Had You" has been debuted on Monday, June 14. The Bryan Barber-directed clip mostly focuses on the singing and dancing scenes the singer does with a number of people at Griffith Park, California.
"What it's saying is no matter what color your skin is, no matter what religion you are, no matter what your sexuality is ... we can all party together," Adam told MTV. "And all this other stuff - money, success, fortune, fashion, glam - it's all great, but it doesn't mean anything if you're not connecting."
Adam Lambert is currently traveling across North America for his Glam Nation tour to promote his debut album "For Your Entertainment" in which "If I Had You" appears as the third single. He is touring with his "American Idol" pal Allison Iraheta and Australian singer/songwriter Orianthi.

Adam Lambert is glamming it up again in his new video for "If I Had You," directed by Bryan Barber. The video doesn't have a premiere date yet, but while you wait we've got the official promotional photos right here on Zap2it.
As always, Glambert's wardrobe is extravagant, complete with top hat and, as the lyrics say, "the right amount of leather."
The lyrics also mention Lambert's trademark "black kohl liner," so his makeup is as precise as ever. He's even rocking long red dreadlocks underneath his feathered top hat.
Adam recently stopped by "Ellen" to talk about his place on People's Most Beautiful list. He performed "If I Had You" and mentioned that he was surprised to be asked back to "American Idol" to mentor the new hopefuls. In this week's finale, Lambert is backing Crystal Bowersox for the win.

As always, Glambert's wardrobe is extravagant, complete with top hat and, as the lyrics say, "the right amount of leather."

In anticipation of Adam Lambert's "If I Had You" music video, several new pictures taken from the filming location are brought forward. Like the previous image, these fresh photos still highlight on the "American Idol" finalist when he is wearing a top hat and rocking out in the woods.
The music video is directed by Bryan Barber and will feature fire performers as well as Adam's friends. It is described as "an artistic gathering of all types of people, to socialize, dance and party while taking in this display of beauty and mystery."
"There's a real authentic joy," Adam previously told MTV. "And it gets kind of psychedelic. There's just gonna be a lot of special effects ... Some are from [Los Angeles variety extravaganza] 'The Zodiac Show', some are from parties [and] clubs. ... Some of them I've done theater with. It's a big variety of people."

What to expect from Adam Lambert's "If I Had You" music video has been revealed. The "For Your Entertainment" singer opened up that the Bryan Barber-directed clip will "get kind of psychedelic." The video was filmed at Griffith Park, Calif. on May 12 night and during the pre dawn hours on Thursday, May 13. "It's about the love that you have with your circle of people that you surround yourself with," he told MTV about its premise.
On the inspiration, he stated, "I was inspired by the parties that I've gone to in the past, like Burning Man and this other party called Lightning in a Bottle. There's a big kind of subculture in California and around the country of people who are designers and performance artists, just free spirits that like to come together and play dress-up and have a good time."

Adam Lambert looked like he was channeling the ghost of Ziggy Stardust on the set of the video for his latest single, "If I Had You." Filmed early Thursday morning in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, the clip looks like it will be a typically over-the-top affair with lots of elaborate costumes, face paint and a woodsy setting, where last year's "American Idol" runner-up hosts a kind of Cirque du Soleil dance party.
Before the shoot, Lambert tweeted on Wednesday, "Gearing up for an all night video shoot for 'If I Had You,' " which he followed with the tidbit, "Invited a bunch of my performer friends to cameo in the video. It's gonna be one big happy family!" Lambert, you might recall,...

"Carry Out" music video has come out. Timbaland and Justin Timberlake are seen making a stop in front of a drive-in outlet which is run by a number of sexy women. They tease and shake their bodies before asking the ladies, "What's your name? Girl, what's your number? I'm glad I came, can you take my order?"
"Carry Out" is one of the singles appearing in Timbaland's "Shock Value 2". Its newly-premiered music video is directed by Bryan Barber and was originally scheduled to be premiered in January before getting pushed back to the next month.
While Timbaland has rolled another album after chart-busting "Shock Value 1", Justin Timberlake hasn't recorded any new music for his own effort to follow up his No. 1 album "FutureSex/LoveSounds". But, Justin assured another record will be made when the right time comes.

The video was shot with director Bryan Barber in Los Angeles in late August over the course of two days. Shortly after completing the filming, the winner of singing reality show "The X-Factor" took it to her Twitter to express her glee. "I'm such a big baby! Walked on set and started crying!!! Everything is so overwhelming!! I love my team," she wrote.
"Bad Boys" is the first single pulled from her debut album, "Overcome". While the single will be released on October 12, the album is going to be dropped in U.K. on October 19.

After announcing working title and release date for her first studio installment, Alexandra Burke reveals cover art for the upcoming album. The artwork is not quite new as it comes from one of the promo pics released earlier last month. The photo features her donning a mini tinfoil dress.
Alexandra's new album is called "Overcome" which is coincidently the title of her fresh material which was leaked in July. The record is confirmed to be released in U.K. on October 19. Tracklisting for the effort hasn't been disclosed, but there is a chance the leaked song will be its title track.
Alexandra Burke is currently having a radio tour to promote her new single "Bad Boys" which features Flo Rida. Besides, she is also expected to debut "Bad Boys" music video sometime soon. The shooting for the video has been held earlier this month with Bryan Barber on the directing seat.

The radio interview during which Alexandra revealed the title and release date for the effort is part of her U.K. radio tour which was started on September 14 in a bid to promote her new single "Bad Boys" which features Flo Rida. She will continue visiting U.K. radio stations until September 18.

A few years ago I headed to Vegas with the express purpose of visiting Steve Wynn's new hotel and casino, The Wynn. I'd read plenty about the classy decor (including surprisingly non-cheesy carpet patterns), but I was most intrigued by its outdoor theater called the Lake of Dreams. Taking our seats at a bar on the shores of a pretty-enough manmade lake, we steeled ourselves for that awful/awesome blend of Vegas "entertainment." But instead of a drag-queen pirate swooping onto the scene, to our pleasant surprise the lake began bubbling to a beat, dancing with choreographed lights like an underwater disco. And then a head--yes, a 25-foot head!--emerged from the water, its "face" a projected, lip-syncing pastiche of stop-motion, claymation, and stunning makeup artistry, singing to the head-bobbing hit by Yello, "Oh Yeah." This blend of film, graphic design, animation and live-action drama reflecting on this lake-theater...

- If I were to give some form of advice to budding filmmakers it would be to: keep your day job. By "day job" I don't mean holding down some other occupation, I mean switching gears and directing other stuff that allows to to flex your creative muscles. The video clip is the perfect venue for just that. As many of you are fascinated by the moving image, I thought it would be cool to point to the music videos that have made a mark on the 07' calendar. The folks over at Pitchforkmedia.com made a fairly comprehensible list (there are some unofficial fan videos and concert selections) which includes some already established veteran filmmakers and some burgeoning new talents. Below I've included some of those names. We'll be featuring director Jeff Nichols in the new year - especially since Shotgun Stories will be finding its way into theaters after a long festival tour.

Idlewild is an entertaining mess. It blends together musical styles and dances, historical periods with howling anachronisms, coy, almost childish gimmicks with R-rated sex and violence and The Cotton Club with Six Feet Under. Think of it as a 1930s remix. The movie has a "let's put on a show" casualness, yet choreography and music can't be slicker. But an entertaining mess is still a mess.
Fans of OutKast probably won't care. The film stars Antwan A. Patton and Andre Benjamin, aka Big Boi and Andre 3000 of OutKast, who also serve as music supervisors. The film's writer-director is Bryan Barber, OutKast's frequent music-video director. This oddball concoction has sat on a shelf for nearly two years while Universal figured out how to sell it. Idlewild may just sell itself thanks to the stars and a hot soundtrack. But it won't satisfy sticklers for historical correctness. For instance, how do you feel about 1930s hip-hop?
The story revolves around a nightclub/whorehouse in Idlewild, Ga., circa 1935 whimsically called Church. Club manager Rooster (Patton) must confront a vicious gangster (Terrence Howard) who controls the flow of liquor to the club, while keeping girlfriends out of sight of his rightly suspicious wife Zora (Malinda Williams).
Rooster's childhood buddy Percival (Benjamin), a mortician by trade, plays piano at the club. He gets drawn out of his shell by the otherworldly beauty of the club's new and mysterious singer Angel (Paula Patton), forcing him to choose between her and his domineering father (Ben Vereen).
The filmmakers focus on the music as much as possible. Indeed most of the contrived plot makes little sense. Nor does the film make any attempt to examine how black culture existed and flourished in the Jim Crow South. This is a period piece with no period; all sense of history is banished.
The film is overloaded with cutesy gimmicks such as a flask that talks back to its owner, music sheets whose notes act as cartoon characters and a scene in which the mortician sings to an exquisite female corpse. Yes, he does.
The movie prides itself on a "retro-modern" look and sound. Its dances are a freestyle fusion of swing, hip-hop and break dance. The music jumps off from the R&B stylings of Cab Calloway and Bessie Smith to contemporary urban sounds. In other words, everything in the movie is subservient to the fact its soundtrack is an OutKast album.
At least Benjamin and Patton don't Take That approach as actors. They play genuine characters with shadings and nuances. The big news, performance-wise, is Paula Patton, reminding you somewhat of a young Whitney Houston, whose lovely voice is equaled by her beauty. Vereen is fine as the troubled father. Howard, of course, is smooth as silk as the sadistic villain. Making much too brief appearances are Macy Gray, Cicely Tyson and Patti LaBelle.
Barber oversees top-notch contributions from a behind-the-camera team that includes Pascal Rabaud's gymnastic camera work, Hinton Battle's eye-catching choreography, Shawn Barton's colorful costumes and Anne Goursaud's rhythmic editing.

Just call him the Music Man. Award-winning music video director Bryan Barber, who is in preproduction on a musical feature with OutKast's Andre 3000 and Big Boi for HBO, is pacting with Regency Enterprises to develop and direct another musical for the big screen. This one will find him helming a hip-hop musical inspired by what's described as a classic story, though the exact story and the details of the updated take for the multicultural project are being kept under wraps. It is known that Barber will team with music multihyphenate Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds on the soundtrack, while Edmonds' wife, Tracey, and her Edmonds Entertainment will produce. Scribe Preston Whitmore (Civil Brand, Lockdown) has been tapped to handle writing duties. At Regency, the project was brought together by Peter Cramer for production topper Sanford Panitch. The project is the first of its kind for Regency, which hasn't delved into the musical genre, sticking mostly to drama (Man on Fire), action (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Elektra) and comedy (The Onion Movie).
