The first season of Arcane was released on Netflix in three parts – on November 6th, 13th, and 20th. Although Riot Games had previously released cinematic videos about the characters, the full-length series was six years in the making.
Arcane showrunner and Riot Games creative director Christian Linke said the process was difficult: the team had to rethink not only the animation, but also the details of the world and the motivations of the characters.
On the day the final episodes premiered, Arcane was renewed for a second season. Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent delighted fans by saying that they would not have to wait six years for new episodes. And it was true – the second season will be released in November 2024, exactly three years after the first season.
The first season contained several plot elements that were left unresolved, and the final episode left more questions than answers. Therefore, the...

With the release of Arcane season 1 on November 6, 2021, the Christian Linke and Alex Yee-created series definitely upped the game in the world of animated series. Based on and set in the same universe as Riot Games’ League of Legends, the 9-episode first season has left audiences (and critics) anticipating the release of Arcane season 2. The series, which premiered on Netflix, is also known by its on-screen title Arcane: League of Legends. Although Arcade ranked number two in Netflix’s United States chart, it peaked at number one in 52 other countries. The second season of the Emmy-winning...

Exclusive: Riot Games, the developer and publisher behind League of Legends and the breakout animated series Arcane, has appointed former Disney exec Cristina Fiumara as its first-ever Global Head of Animation Content Development for Film & TV.
Fiumara comes to Riot after serving as VP of Streaming Content at Walt Disney Animation Studios. In her new role, she will be responsible for developing animated television series and feature films for Riot Entertainment worldwide — working closely with a broad group of partners across franchise development, esports, game development and creative leaders, and reporting to Riot’s Chief Content Officer, Brian Wright.
Fiumara’s newly created role is the latest in Riot’s animation expansion. Following the success of Arcane, which broke numerous viewership records when it debuted on Netflix in November of 2021, Riot acquired a non-controlling stake in Fortiche Productions, the animation studio behind the series and a longtime collaborator of the company.

This year's Emmy season has come and gone, and amongst the historic wins for Sheryl Lee Ralph, Quinta Brunson, and Lee Jung-jae, Netflix also took home the statue for Best Animated Program for the very first time. The streaming giant has been nominated in the past for "Big Mouth" and "BoJack Horseman," but it was "Arcane" that finally brought home the gold, and made Netflix the first streamer to ever take home the award.
This year's category was absolutely stacked, with "Arcane" besting the already Emmy award-winning series "The Simpsons," "Bob's Burgers," and "Rick and Morty," as well as the Chadwick Boseman-voiced episode of "What If...?" for Disney+. "Arcane" co-creator Christian Linke accepted the award during the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, delivering a speech honoring the video game world that inspired the series:
"Thank you for this. It's a big deal for us as we come from video games.

Call it third time lucky.
Netflix has finally won Best Animated Program at the Emmys with Arcane picking up the award at the Creative Arts ceremony. It marks the first time that a streaming show has picked up the award.
It beat Bob’s Burgers, Rick and Morty, The Simpsons and Chadwick Boseman-voiced What If…? in the hotly contested category.
Other streaming contenders in the past have included Netflix’s Big Mouth and BoJack Horseman.

The first night of the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 3, and we’ll see where the Primetime ceremony could be heading based on the first wave of winners.
With an evening that features categories for animated program, reality host, documentaries and short form, we could get a strong sense of where some of the support lies for the main ceremony on Monday, Sept. 12.
There are significant history-making moments that can take place.
Barack Obama could become the second U.S. president to win an Emmy for outstanding narrator for Netflix’s “Our Great National Parks.” Dwight Eisenhower won in 1956, while still in office when he picked up the Governors Award “for his use and encouragement of television.”
If Obama wins, he’ll be halfway to Egot status after netting two Grammys for best spoken word album for “Dreams from My Father” (2006) and “The Audacity of...

For Arcane, co-creators Alex Yee and Christian Linke told the origin story of two iconic video game characters and expanded the lore of a world. Based on characters and the world from the video game League of Legends, Netflix’s Arcane follows two sisters, Vi and Jinx, as they grow up in the seedy underbelly of Zaun. Linke and Yee both worked on creating Vi and Jinx for the original game, so they had a deeper understanding of the characters and how they became champions.
Deadline: How did you transition the game into a series?
Christian Linke: It all really started with Alex and I sitting together and thinking about which characters we would love to see on the bigger screen and dive into their story and world. Vi and Jinx were characters that we had worked on together with the game design team when they were made for...

Netflix’s “Arcane,” based on Riot’s popular “League of Legends” battle game, has become the most acclaimed animated series of the season after sweeping the Annie Awards. This bodes well for its Emmy chances, thanks to a compelling story and eye-catching illustrative style from Paris-based animation studio Fortiche.
“Taking this on was intimidating but we had a yearning to do something different,” showrunner Christian Linke told IndieWire. He created the series with fellow Riot vet and executive producer Alex Yee. “We figured out what made the game and characters so popular and then made the series for ourselves.”
The secret of their success was building the dystopian series around the rivalry between badass sisters Jinx (Ella Purnell) and Vi (Hailee Steinfeld), who are part of a war between the affluent city of Piltover and the oppressed underground city of Zaun. “So much of Jinx was her big personality and...

The creatives behind five of the biggest contenders for Emmys in animation joined our recent Meet the Experts panel. They included shows about a class struggle based on a popular video game, a workplace spy-comedy, an anthology set in a world of manufactured superheroes, a musical set against a New York landmark and an exploration of what inspired people currently working as animators.
In our roundtable discussion, we hear what these showrunners and animators have to say about the works that inspired them, the biggest misconceptions about animation and the most recent animated work that left a deep impression on them. Gold Derby recently talked about this with Christian Linke (“Arcane”), Casey Willis (“Archer”), Simon Racioppa (“The Boys Presents: Diabolical”), Steven Davis (“Central Park”) and...

In deciding which animation studio he should use to create the Netflix series “Arcane,” creator Christian Linke decided to take a chance on a small French studio called Fortiche. “I had been friends with them for a long time. We worked on all these music videos together. They always had this really cinematic look, this beautiful approach to kind of blending 3D and 2D,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: TV Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). While it did take a while to make the final decision to go with the studio, he felt that it would be worth investing in a relationship with them. “Let’s help them grow and scale up to something like this. We’ve got to just find a lot of answers in the process, build the teams from the ground up, but I think that’s really what made that possible.

Sony Animation/Netflix’s innovative, 2D-inspired “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” led the 49th annual Annie Awards Saturday with eight wins, including best feature, direction and writing, character design, production design, editorial, FX, and voice acting (Abbie Jacobson as Katie). Asifa-Hollywood’s animation version of the Oscars was held virtually at UCLA’s Royce Hall for the second consecutive year because of the pandemic.
Disney’s Oscar frontrunner, “Encanto,” the animated musical set in Colombia, followed with three awards for character animation, music, and storyboarding. It went into the awards ceremony with nine noms. Disney’s other Oscar contender, “Raya and the Last Dragon,” however, was shut out after leading the pack with 10 noms, as was Pixar’s “Luca,” which had eight noms.

Netflix owned the Annie Awards on Saturday, picking up 20 of the night’s 31 competitive trophies during the virtual show. The streamer’s “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” was named best animated feature, topping the film categories with eight wins while “Arcane” ruled the TV side with nine, including best TV/media – general audience.
Neon’s animated documentary “Flee,” by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, was named best indie feature.
In addition to the top film award, “Mitchells,” from Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix, won awards for writing, FX, character design, production design, voice acting and editorial. The victory could give it an edge at the Academy Awards, with final Oscar voting set to start Thursday.
“This team never settled for anything that wasn’t original, bold or new and they broke the rules,” said Christopher Miller, who produced the film along with his Lord Miller partner Phil Lord and Sony Pictures Animation’s Kurt Albrecht.

Netflix’s “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” dominated the 49th annual Annie Awards on Saturday, winning eight awards to only three for Disney’s “Encanto.” While “Mitchells” from Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe has won more critics’ awards than “Encanto,” the Disney film has won virtually every Hollywood guild award and is the prohibitive favorite to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
“Mitchells” won in every one of the eight categories in which it was nominated at the Annie Awards, including Best Feature, Best Direction, Best Writing and Best Voice Acting (Abbi Jacobson). The three wins for “Encanto” – for character animation, music and storyboarding – came in categories in which “Mitchells” was not nominated.

If you haven’t already checked out Arcane on Netflix, you really need to put it high on your to do list. Yes, it’s based on the world and characters of League of Legends, one of the planet’s most popular battle arena games, but that’s almost irrelevant. Somehow this animated series manages to be amazing in its own right, pleasing both players and those who know nothing of Jinx, Vi, Jayce, or any other champion from the game. How on Earth did Riot Games manage it?
On paper, it seems like films or TV shows based on certain video games should be guaranteed successes. If the developers have already gone through the trouble of building a massive, complex world like Azeroth of Warcraft, all the writers have to do is give one of the playable characters a hero’s journey, and it’s off to the races.
