Catalan titles will be in no short supply at this year’s Cannes Festival and Marché du Film. Below, a near dozen titles that hope to impress at this year’s event.
“Blue Sun Palace,” (Constance Tsang)
Tsang’s debut feature, shot in New York, world premieres at this year’s Critics’ Week. Field Trip Media and Big Buddha Prods. produce this film about two migrants who work at a massage parlor in Queens. Co- produced by Catalonia’s Marta Cruañas (“Creature”).

It tells the story of a woman, Claudia (Angela Molina) diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour who takes a last trip to Switzerland to decide how and when to end her life with the help of an assisted dying association. Her partner (Alfredo Castro), and daughter (Mònica Almirall) must work out where they fit in.
The screenplay is by long-time co-writer Clara Roquet, director of 2021 Cannes Critics Week title Libertad, who wrote Marques-Marcet’s previous film Long Distance.

Harvey Keitel transforms into a guru named Marpa, who becomes the spiritual guide of a young girl named Mila (played by “Les Miserables” actor Isabelle Allen), in Italian director Louis Nero’s futuristic drama “Milarepa.”
Set in a “no tech” near future, the English-language indie film – with a cast also comprising F. Murray Abraham; Angela Molina; Franco Nero (no relation to the director); Diana Dell’Erba; Mexico’s Iazua Larios (“Sundown”) and Italy-based Japanese actor Hal Yamanouchi (“The Wolverine”) – just wrapped principle photography on the island of Sardinia, where it made ample use of its ancient megalithic stone constructions, dunes and craggy landscapes. Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks Int’l has nabbed worldwide rights to Daniel Werner’s feature debut, erotic thriller “Bandit Love” (“Amor Bandido”), after it screened at Argentine indie film festival Bafici, where it garnered both audience and critical acclaim.
“This slow-burn thriller, disguised as an illicit romance, surprised everyone at its Bafici premiere and critics went mad. It’s a kind of high-concept festival gem that is hard to find nowadays … all major festivals and buyers will chase this one,” FilmSharks CEO Guido Rud said. Rud has also acquired the remake rights of the film for his subsidiary, the Remake Co.
