Exclusive: Oscar and Emmy winner Kathy Bates, two-time Oscar nominee and Emmy winner John Malkovich and Lewis Pullman have signed on to star in Thelma, an indie directed by two-time Emmy nom Ken Kwapis.
Thelma recounts the true story of the mother of John Kennedy Toole (Pullman), the Pulitzer Prize winning author of A Confederacy of Dunces. Toole died by suicide before finding a home for his masterpiece, and his mother Thelma (Bates) made it her life’s mission, through outrageous gamesmanship, to see the book published. She eventually succeeded in getting the manuscript into the hands of writer Walker Percy (Malkovich), who became the novel’s champion. It would be published in 1980, eleven years after Ken’s death, thereafter becoming a widely celebrated cult classic.
Black List screenwriter Andrew Farotte penned the original screenplay.

Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room. “Pitch Perfect 4”When something is perfect, why not try to hit another high note? After “Winter’s Bone” received four Oscar nominations, including one for then-discovery Jenifer Lawrence, nobody thought it would take eight years for Debra Granik’s next feature to hit screens — except maybe Debra Granik. She knows her movies are about people who aren’t easy to see.

After “Winter’s Bone” received four Oscar nominations, including one for then-discovery Jenifer Lawrence, nobody thought it would take eight years for Debra Granik’s next feature to hit screens — except maybe Debra Granik. She knows her movies are about people who aren’t easy to see.
“Not everyone is assigned the same beat,” Granik said in Cannes, where “Leave No Trace” played Directors Fortnight. “I happen to be more on the periphery. Not everyone can do the same five zip codes. American film isn’t just film and glamor and fame and the lives of people who are fortunate financially. Those aren’t the only stories in this vast nation. That’s my mandate.”

The Catholic Church sex abuse drama earned five awards on Saturday including best film in a great night for Participant Media that saw Film Independent voters slap the Academy in the face and hand its two male acting prizes to Beasts Of No Nation.
Open Road/Participant Media’s Spotlight also landed best director for Tom McCarthy at the 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards held in a tent on Santa Monica beach, as well as screenplay for Josh Singer and McCarthy, editing for Tom McArdle and the previously announced Robert Altman Award for best ensemble.
Voting members honoured Abraham Attah with best male lead and Idris Elba with best supporting male for their roles in Netflix/Participant Media/Red Crown’s child soldier drama Beasts Of No Nation.

Todd Haynes is in the running for best director and both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are in contention for best female lead alongside Room’s Brie Larson as Carol earned six 2016 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations in Los Angeles on Tuesday.Scroll down for full list of nominations
Close behind were Spotlight and Beasts Of No Nation on five apiece, followed by indie darling Tangerine and Anomalisa on four each.
Not even a glitch that saw the list of nominees temporarily appear on the Film Independent website prior to the official announcement could spoil what turned out by and large to be a recognition of independent film in its myriad forms.

The Casting Society of America has super-sized its Artios Awards feature film nominations this year, honoring 42 different films and putting some of 2014’s top contenders in categories where they’ll compete against 2013’s awards movies.
For its 30th annual ceremony, the awards for casting directors have moved from their usual fall slot to a late-January date that placed them in the middle of awards season. To accommodate the new date, this year’s eligibility period spanned 18 months instead of a single year, encompassing films released in the second half of 2013 and all of 2014.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Heather Graham’s upcoming feature directorial debut has a top casting office attached, Backstage has learned. Graham is set to direct and star in “Half Magic,” a comedy she wrote about a group of female friends who make a pact to find nice guys to sleep with “without allowing self doubts to deter them.” “It’s about sex and love from a female point of view and female friendship,” Graham said in a recent interview with Glamour. “It will be really funny.” Kerry Barden and Paul Schnee, whose feature resume includes the Oscar-winning “Dallas Buyers Club,” are set to cast the film. Graham said she’s been working on the feature for about two years and expects her passion project to be released in 2015.

To say the ensemble cast of the upcoming film “August: Osage County” is star-studded would be an understatement. A-listers like Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, and Chris Cooper, are usually names rattled off together by a presenter in an awards show. Yet, with 'August' they’re all there, and surprisingly, most of them had to audition. “We saw a lot of people audition that hadn’t auditioned in years,” casting director Kerry Barden said to Backstage, who worked on the project with his partner, Paul Schnee, of Barden/Schnee Casting. “It was one of those high-profile projects that a lot of movie stars were attracted to. “Prisoners” was originally written as a story of two white families in a predominantly white neighborhood and their struggle, when their daughters go missing, to find their kidnapped children. But casting directors Kerry Barden and Paul Schnee of Barden/Schnee Casting challenged that original concept. “The discussion about Viola [Davis’] and Terrence [Howard’s] roles was a discussion about whether we could open it up to non-Caucasians,” explains Barden. “And everyone was open to that idea because it’s a working-class neighborhood.… It feels like it adds an authenticity to the world we live in. We never discussed their skin color. That’s who they are, and they’re the neighbors across the street with children the same age. I actually think it’s a powerful non-statement statement.” This casting choice also opened up the casting possibilities for the two girls who go missing in the film. Bringing a child in for such...

Actors will do a lot of crazy things to get roles. But to star in “Dallas Buyers Club,” based on the true story of AIDS patient Ron Woodroof and his battle with the medical establishment to get treatment for HIV-positive people, Matthew McConaughey lost 50 pounds to play Woodroof. McConaughey didn’t audition and had been attached to the project for a few years. However, when it comes to casting a part like this, does the casting director try to find someone who already looks like the character or ask an actor to make changes for the part? “Actors really always want to challenge themselves, and if there’s a part that’s off the grid as far as what they would normally be cast as, you get interest from actors that are brave enough to go there,” says Kerry Barden, who cast the film along with his partner, Paul Schnee,...

Jennifer Lawrence didn’t just win the Oscar for Best Actress last month. She basically won the whole Oscars. (Apologies to Ben Affleck.) In the early 80s a small group of filmmakers, including myself, under the invitation of Sandra Schulberg gathered at NYC's 92nd Street 'Y' to found a filmmaker-run and oriented organization to facilitate networking and 'to give us a voice'. I am still very happy with the result as seen in today's 34th edition of Independent Film Week.
Ifp is announcing its industry activities for the 34th edition of Independent Film Week, as well as the 2012 slate of 165 new films in development selected for its esteemed Project Forum.
Independent Film Week takes place September 16-20, 2012 at various locations throughout Lincoln Center and is a one-of-a-kind event that brings the international film and media community to New York City to advance new voices and projects on the independent scene. The event is purely focused on supporting the future of storytelling by nurturing and providing opportunities for both emerging and established artists to connect with the financiers, executives, influencers and decision-makers in film, television, new media and cross-platform storytelling that can help them complete their latest works and connect with audiences.
Expanding from its core mission Ifp's Film Week has been re-focused to ensure that artists, industry and audiences have the educational, networking and access opportunities necessary to create and enjoy work across a variety of platforms. After 12 years in publishing, 36-year-old Paul Schnee became an intern at Hopkins Smith & Barden Casting, proving a fresh start is never too late. When one of the associates relocated, Schnee was offered a casting assistant position. He and Kerry Barden soon fell into a pattern of working as a team, which led to the two forming Barden/Schnee Casting four years ago, after Hopkins Smith & Barden dissolved.Since then, Schnee has cast such major films as "The Help," "Mirror Mirror," and "Win Win." "August: Osage County," starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, is in the works.Yet it's "Winter's Bone," the low-budget feature about a struggling family in the Ozarks, that has special resonance for him. "It was just one of these serendipitous events where everything fell into place, from the finances to the casting," Schnee says. "It was a purely creative casting project, with no pressure to cast stars.

Chicago – With the right role and the right director, Channing Tatum manages to convince me that he is in fact a decent actor. He’s delivered enough solid work to illustrate that he’s more than just empty eye candy (in other words, he’s no Taylor Lautner). So why does Tatum continue to forge collaborations with Dito Montiel, a director who has a knack for making him look like an amateur?
There’s nothing remotely compelling or magnetic about Tatum’s work in “The Son of No One,” a star-studded dud that marks the third directorial effort of Montiel. After his hyper-stylized debut effort, “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,” and forgettable sports drama, “Fighting,” Montiel has hit a new low with this dull and predictable crime drama. The level of misused talent in the ensemble is as staggering as it is depressing.
